As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
workingSend automated PMs to watchers when a page is submitted to cutlist
We now have the ability to send a message to watchers when a page is linked to an Image Pickin' thread.
Let's extend this to the Cut List so that anyone watching a page is immediately warned when it's submitted to be cut.
Either this could be 'from' the person raising the cut request, or it could be from the same address used to send welcome messages to new tropers.
Either way, this would increase engagement for the cut discussion and help us ensure we have full context (and plenty of scope for folk to challenge) before it's cut.
openlet page titles start with numbers
Would it be possible to let page titles start with numbers? e.g {{555}} instead of Main.Five Five Five
openspoilers toggle for video examples
Be able to mark a video example as containing spoilers. This would:
- stop the video from auto-playing
- display "(SPOILERS)" or similar in the title. While this can be accomplished by manually inserting text into the title, the character limit is an issue.
openAdd a "Featured Work" section to the main page
Based off this request
, but slightly altered due to the unfeasibility of a "new works" section.
I think it'd be a fun idea to have a "Featured Work" section of the main page, much like the "Featured Trope" part we have. It could be an opportunity to highlight all kinds of works, including pages that need more attention, pages that are thematic to a certain day, and so on. Overall a fun little thing.
How does this idea sound? Obviously not a top priority but something to think about.
openSee all your posts in a specific thread
I would like to have a feature where one could see all the posts they've made in a specific forum thread.
I came up with this idea when I decided to make a glossary of trope ideas I've proposed in the Trope Idea Sounding Board on my personal sandbox, only to find digging through that very long thread to be overly cumbersome and time consuming. Indeed, right now you'd have to dig through your forum history to find posts you've made in a specific thread — hence why I think it'd be pertinent to have a thread-specific search function.
Edited by themayorofsimpletonworkingUser activity header
Aside of "X's Edits", add the rest of user activity lists to the Tropers/ page top navbar for convenience. For example:
I'm sure I've brought it up before, but the search is failing me.
openYKTTW still used on page titles and texts
( Original thread at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?parent_id=101310&type=att
)
If you go to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/yk_list.php
(assuming you've ever contributed), for some reason it still uses the old YKTTW terminology in the page title - "YKTTW History - TV Tropes" and on the page -
- "<your name> YKTTW History"
- "Active YKTTW's you started:"
- "Launched YKTTW's you started:"
- "Your Replies to Active YKTTW's:"
Given "YKTTW" terminology has been superseded by "Trope Launch Pad" etc., shouldn't this pages' template be updated to use the correct term and the page moved to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/tlp_list.php
Also at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?type=tf
the text is "Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where." linking to the old URL https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/yk_activity.php
And at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/ykttw_salvage_list.php
we have the title "YKTTW Salvage List" and the text "These are YKTTW's that have 10 or more replies that have been idle since before <one month ago>." - this needs updating and the URL moving to https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/tlp_salvage_list.php
This list is not exhaustive - there are undoubtedly other pages with outdated terminology, titles, page titles, links and URL constructions. Can we get these updated?
Edited by ExxolonopenRestoring a page's history
I'd appreciate it if restoring a page also restored its history, if there's a way to make that happen.
openSorting option for PM
Ability to sort messages by tropers (sender/receiver) would be great help.
openTLP notifications
Now that we have notifications for our queries, something similar for TLP would be cool. Of course, this one should be something we could turn off or on for specific drafts at our leisure, as I'd hate to be notified every time someone bumps a draft I've abandoned.
openUpdated emotes in forum
This is really small, I know, but it's current year and the forum emotes still look outdated except for maybe [nja]. The thumbs up and down ones don't even have transparent backgrounds!
Edited by WaferworkingShow ratings and clip length on Recent Video page
Make the ratings visible on the Videos overview. It's might be particularly interesting for the My Videos part.
closed Bring back Search Forum Titles
Because the current forum search is completely broken if you're looking for a title that's also a common word in posts themselves.
The 2012 French Presidential Election
thread is impossible to find!
closed Replace The Icon For The WebAnimation/ Namespace
I really don't like the current icon for the Web Animation namespace. The "POW" thing doesn't really convey what the namespace entails. I suggest we replace it something more indicative, like ones that combine these:
- 💻🖊️ Web Animation
- 📱✍️ Web Animation
- 🖥️🖋️ Web Animation
Any thoughts?
closed Make the to-do list more accessable on mobile
On the desktop version of the site, clicking on the "more" tab at the top of each page gives you the option to go to the to-do list. On mobile view though, the to-do list is only accessible through troper pages. It should be easier to get to, especially because, in my opinion, the to-do list is more important on mobile than on desktop. Editing the wiki on mobile is difficult, and it would be nice if the site made it easy to make note of problems so I could fix them when I get back to my computer.
At the suggestion of another troper, I've bookmarked the to-do list on my phone as a workaround, but it would be nice if the process was a bit easier.
openDon't have Sandbox Wicks count
So wicks on Tropers/ pages don't show up on Related pages, and for good reason. However, Sandbox page wicks do show up, and I need to ask why? Sandboxes are usually private drafting pages with very few rules as to what can and can't be done on them...so why, exactly, do the wicks used on them count? They can create some problems when we need to, say, do a wick check or TRS cleanup, because people are skittish about editing someone's sandbox even for cleanup, and those wicks are very rarely helpful, anyway.
IDK, I just feel like having Sandbox pages show up on Related/ pages is generally unhelpful. Other less-than-helpful wicks that still get counted are those on Pantheon pages.
Edited by WarJay77closed Templates
Given how certain pages such as character subpages need to be expanded, it would seem tedious to edit every page whenever a change is made to the title of even a single subpage. Templates, like what wikipedia has, would make it easier to make one change on a page and the change will be cascaded onto other pages.
Edited by KZN02closed Include the running number in comment header section
On forums we often have to refer to earlier comments but have to hover over the post in question in order to get its ref number. It would be helpful if the running number showed next to the comments.

It's standard for most websites to have an eye button in register and login forms to verify what you're typing the password field, so thinking if TVT should also have a password visibility toggle.
