As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openCustom title history
Maybe there should be a way to see a page’s history of custom titles.
openFilter Followed by Unread
Since daily routine involves catching up on Followed Threads
and Followed Pages
, some could be checked before others and pagination makes it so some unreads can be pushed to a second page, thinking it can be a QOL to have a checkmark to show only unread activity.
openAdd tropes/media sources to video examples
Is there a way to add secondary tropes or additional media sources to existing video examples? Because I can't find it if there is.
closed Alt text for images
As proposed here
, it might be good if images on this wiki had descriptive alt text for visually impaired users. This is also one of several potential accessibility improvements proposed here
in Bugs.
closed Replace Trope Finder icon
The current icon for Trope Finder, as outlined by this necro'd ATT query
, is a trash can — an icon that has been noted as being rather unfitting and unwelcoming.
I am thus requesting that the icon be swapped out for something more fitting — perhaps a question mark? Or a lampshade with a question mark? Something other than a trash can, preferably.
openMake it possible to add descriptive alt text to images
(I submitted this proposal some time ago and it was deleted without explanation. I have received mod approval to resubmit it
.)
Can ye make it possible to add descriptive Alt Text to images? Doing so would make the site more accessible to blind and visually impaired readers.
For example, say a blind reader is doing a Wiki Walk and they come across Ballroom Blitz. As it stands, when their screen reader gets to the picture, it would at best read "A picture of Batman Year One", but would be more likely to read out the full URL ("https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ComicBook/BatmanEarthOne") or the file name ("https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ballroom_blitz.png").
But now suppose a sighted troper was able to add alt text describing the image. When the screen reader gets to the image, it would read something like "A picture of Batman crashing through a window onto a party of gentlemen wearing tuxedos and ladies wearing backless dresses and heels." Now our hypothetical blind reader has some idea of what a sighted person would see when reading.
This would also make it easier for people with dyslexia to understand images which depend on words.
Secondarily, it would help people on slow connections and whose connections restrict images. Browsers normally display alt text while the image is loading, so if somebody's browser can't load the image, they can at least see what the image is supposed to show.
Edited by VampireBuddhaclosed Cutlist: Do It should warn if there's something in the Request section that would disappear.
Just in-case anyone else is like me and hits Do It instead of Doom It.
openWhile Editing Calculate How Many Characters Are In Highlighted Text
This can help editors properly figure out if a section of a page has enough characters to warrant getting split to another page. It would also be incredibly useful for those using a sandbox for similar reasons.
openReverse Related Pages
The inverse of the current "what links here", a compiled list of all wikilinks on a page. Can be used for quicker Crosswicking / Entry Pimp and maybe statistics to see how many pages a page is connected to.
Edited by AmonimusopenSee all your posts in a specific thread
I would like to have a feature where one could see all the posts they've made in a specific forum thread.
I came up with this idea when I decided to make a glossary of trope ideas I've proposed in the Trope Idea Sounding Board on my personal sandbox, only to find digging through that very long thread to be overly cumbersome and time consuming. Indeed, right now you'd have to dig through your forum history to find posts you've made in a specific thread — hence why I think it'd be pertinent to have a thread-specific search function.
Edited by themayorofsimpletonworkingMove the upload videos button
To upload a video, you first have to go to the article's edit screen (good luck if someone's editing it), then click on "Edit videos" (which would close the edit screen). It's such a frustrating unnecessary step that has nothing to do with editing an article, this button should be moved from the edit toolbar to an article's toolbar.
openWarning about edits with green links.
Green links were designed to show tropers that a trope has been disambiguated to encourage them to find the proper trope. However, this does not provide enough warning for some tropers who still assume such tropes exist, leading them to post their example without realising the green link, resulting in disambiguated tropes to getting more unnecessary wicks.
I suggest that when doing so, the troper should be warned that they are putting a green link in their example and have to confirm again if they want to implement their example with the green link. This would give clarity to the more hasty tropers that this link should not be put in the example.
Edited by JustaUsernameopenCopy markup to clipboard button
It's kinda annoying to have to individually click "view markup" for every individual comment with an example to update your TLP drafts. If there were a "copy markup to clipboard" button next to the view markup button, you wouldn't have to do that unless someone comments with multiple examples, and even then you could just paste that markup into notepad or something and sort them yourself.
closed Edit War option under Issue Helper
An ATT, I forgot where, pointed out that Issue Helper doesn't offer Edit War as one of the options, an issue I've noticed before myself.
Would that be possible to add to the list? Or is there a reason it's not already there?
openCut List archive
As in, a collection of cuts you submitted in the Cut List, a history of your cuts, like a TLP or Edit history, but for cuts. That way it'll be easier for Tropers to not forget the pages (or the number of pages) they've cut.
Alleged Number1KirbyFan
closed On "Related" tab, show which whicks are in a bulleted list
Each wick could mention where it is on bulleted text or not. This would help a lot in separating wicks from descriptions and example lists.
Different, but similar suggestions:

openMake Admin/ a shortcut for the Administrivia/ namespace
Typing Administrivia (13 letters) for every single link to the namespace is a slight pain. Not much, but it adds up. Allowing Admin (5 letters) as a shorthand in links would help a lot. This would be similar to how @ acts as a shorthand for the Tropers namespace.
openBlock unlaunched pages
As keeps happening, if someone is editing a launched trope and an engineer unlaunches it, then after a save the page gets recreated. It shouldn't be happening. So proposing,
When a page is in the unlaunched state, edits shouldn't save and a pop-up would inform about it. Alternatively, the edit is saved but the page remains cut.
Edited by AmonimusopenHyphens in curly brackets
So far, trying to add hyphen in curly brackets results in redlinks, even if the actual trope page displays an hyphen.
For example, I wanted to use Family-Friendly Firearms, but to talk about just one firearm, but writing Family-Friendly Firearm doesn't let me pothole the page. I have to omit the hyphen (Family Friendly Firearm), or rewrite almost the whole title in square brackets (Family-Friendly Firearm).
Is there a way to solve this?
Edited by TMH-Sir-Iron-Vomit

As I calculated, every edit history page tend to take up to about 30 edits per page, similar to how forum threads take up to 25 posts. So I was thinking, why can't we number the edits similar to how we number the threads? Basically frankly, I'm tired of counting how many edits I have until they reach 30.
