As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openRecent DIscussions
This shouldn't be too difficult to do. There doesn't seem to be a link to recent discussions (or at least one that's easy to find), even though the page
exists, which makes the discussion pages less useful than they could be.
openAutomatic Ellipses
Would it be possible to have automatic ellipses
(…) just by writing three dots (...), the same way writing two minus signs (--) automatically turns into a dash (—)? It is really nothing major or important, I am just kind of obsessive like that…
openReformat Wishlist and Bugs to folder-style pages with tabs for Open, Working, and Closed
Already mentioned this to the admins but I'm logging it here for comments and votes.
Basically, this would change the formatting for Wishlist and Bugs from its current setup to a folder-style layout where there would be three tabs at the top of the page marked Open, Working, and Closed, probably with Open being the default view. Clicking on each tab would display a list of items in that status; changing the status would kick an item to its respective tab. This seems to be a much easier way to cycle between the three activity states than what we have now, and would make for better organization without having to resort to filtering. The Sort and Toggle Children functions would stay as they are.

Edited by war877closed Subjectless [=PMs=] Can't Be Opened
A far while back, someone sent me a PM without a subject. As a result, I can't open the shoddy thing.
openTrope Redirect Creator
I would like the old freedom to create new trope redirects for searchability back. They shouldn't have to go through the crowded "edit request" thread. I envision a tool that automatically allows a troper to create a new Main/ page that redirects to an existing trope.
At the moment, I see too many good trope redirects being Cut Listed as "unused" for no better reason than that they lack wicks and inbounds.
To detect abuse of this feature, the new redirects should still show up in the roster of newly created pages; perhaps there should also be some sort of temporary lock on these redirects to discourage backdooring a workpage redirect or something else into the Main/ namespace.
open"Wrong trope" in issue helper
Among the list of pre-formated "issue helper" that can be sent to an editor, one that I think is missing would be "wrong trope" — the example is properly formated, and there's a trope behind it, but it's listed under the right one. It is rather common, IMHO.
openCustom Titles Taking Effect in URLs and on History, Related, etc.
When I look at the title on the history page of Creator.Yuriofwind, "Yuriofwind" transforms into "YuriofWind", likely because it had the latter title before the proper custom title was made. The latter title also appears in the URL of the Creator page, and it bugs me that the title and URL have different names. This, of course, doesn't just apply to the aforementioned pages though.
openCan four dashes convert to a solid black line instead of a pale dotted line?
I forget if the pale dotted line is a bug or a feature, but the solid black lines made pages and trope listings a lot easier to divide.
Edited by lalalei2001openlink back to article in black bar
It would be nice if there was a link back to the article from the edit, history, discussion, and related pages. The link should be the leftmost item in the bar and it should duplicate the function of cancel for the edit page.
To make room, related should not appear on related pages, edit should not appear on edit pages, discussion should not appear on discussion pages, and history should not appear on history pages.
openCan we have an edit timer "time running out" reminder of some sort?
I just lost a bunch of edits I was making to a page because I lost track of time (and had to take a phone call) and the timer ran out. The problem is when you're editing, the timer scrolls past the top of the page and you have to return to the top of the page to see it which isn't always convenient when you're in the midst of editing. I'd like to propose some sort of pop-up that gives a 2-minute or 5-minute warning, so people know to save their work. Alternately, if there was some way to have the timer still be visible when you scroll down a page that would be good too. The timer is there for a reason, of course. But it would make things more user-friendly if there was a reminder mechanism in place.
openCopy-paste text format converter
It would be nice if there was a conversion tool that we could copy-paste a page's text into, and then with one click the software translates any hyperlinks, common font styles (boldface, italics, etc.), and such things into the TV Tropes format, instead of having to do them manually.
openRemove Recent Edits' gray and white alternation?
Is there a way to remove the gray alternating shadows between edits on Percent Edits?
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=lalalei2001
It wasn't so bad when they were double spaced or completely white, but as it is now it strains my eyes. I think a light blue would be better if it had to have alternate colors.
Edited by lalalei2001openRemove target=blank from watchlist links in Desktop view
It is poor practice nowadays, at least on desktops, to override the user's choice of where to open a link. When I want to open a watchlist link in a new tab, I middle-click it. When I left-click it, I expect to see it open in the same tab.
This worked fine in previous versions of the website, this is a regression.
I am, however, conscious that mobile users have different use cases (that stem from an inability to middle-click), so mobile view should stay as it is.
openVoting System
On all websites I browse media (Rateyourmusic, Wikiart, Goodreads, IMDB) I've come to realize the least efficient way to organize content is alphabetically or, by chronological date added. What top sites do is one or both of the following: a voting system, or a featured list. It would be amazing if users could vote one how well specific tropes fit each work. A simple up/down voting system would move each trope, fridge, or headscratcher entry up or down, letting users decide what's important and what isn't. This would also increase time users stay on the site, meaning more time to click ads, meaning more money for TV Tropes. This is because they're always being exposed to the top quality info on the site, rather than sifting through each page alphabetically/chronologically. Hell, I've just started to do it pretty randomly unless it's a work I really like because reading each entry/trope is really time consuming (but I love it).
As seen here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/trivia
Finally, to take it to the next level TV Tropes should consider implementing "portals" like Wikipedia. Lets say a work has an unusually high ranking for a particular Fridge Logic, or YMMV. Users who don't normally look at those could be exposed to them. A portal would should the top rated entries (tropes, fridge, nightmare fuel etc.) across all of those pages, on one page (a portal). That would be an excellent way to fully show/navigate TV Tropes amazing content. I don't want to get greedy, but a further way of sorting ratings (up/down votes) could mimic sites like Reddit. Organize entries by "on the rise", "hot", "controversial", "top of all time", "trending now". Entries meaning the aforementioned pages (tropes, fridge, WMG etc.) I'm fairly confident any of these changes would greatly improve the user experience of the site.
Edited by Aus0openFind TLP drafts by creator?
On Trope Launch Pad's search bar, can you please add an option to find drafts based on the name of the creator?
This request is partly out of curiosity, and partly because I've created a lot of drafts. I've starred some of them, but I can't remember if I created any others.
Edited by DrNoPumaopenview source in specific threads.
Notably the lock/unlock/edit requests thread and the get help with english thread. A view post source button would allow formatted snippets to be added to wiki pages much faster and more painlessly.

A little tool that could be useful is one that give you the current status of an editor, by entering the handle. That is: suspended, permanently banned, or normal (maybe with the number of previous suspensions).
That way, when we notice a troper whose edit are problematic, but those edits are a bit old, we could check if it was already taken care off or not before signaling it to the mods' attention.
