Find a Trope:
resolved The Lie Wins in the End Film
When a villain is victorious in the end of the movie, it's a case of The Bad Guy Wins. But, what about when the good guy wins, but some some sort of false narrative develops, in which the hero is villified, ridiculed or ignored?
So, the hero does manage to defeat the bad guy, but because the latter was a Villain with Good Publicity, the hero needs to go into hiding despite saving the world; or maybe the Fake Ultimate Hero takes credit for the victory, where everyone assumes the real hero is just making up stories out of jealousy; Or even, the hero can't take credit for his actions because of some duty related to his Secret Identity.
All the hero can do in those situations is rest with the knowledge of what really happened, despite what everyone else thinks.
resolved Older Woman Finds Herself Film
Is there a trope for the type of plot in movies like Shirley Valentine or How Stella Got Her Groove Back where an older woman who’s overlooked her own needs ahead of others makes some sort of life change where she starts putting her own needs first?
resolved pretty sure theres a trope for this, dont know the name tho …. Film
when a person says stuff, and another person says “we should edit this out”, they agree or somethin, but they keep it in the video
resolved Bow = Gun Film
Is there a trope about bow and arrow users behaving like gun users? Either as a source of comedy, or because the writer Did Not Do The Research and assumes the two weapons are similar enough they can cross out gun and replace it with bow if he's setting the story far enough into the past.
resolved Tortureland Montage Film
Is there a trope for a scene where a character goes to a place and finds everyone is being tortured and/or enslaved? Like the robots in the Jawa sandcrawler from Star Wars: A New Hope?
resolved An Affair Before the End of the World Film
Let's say a man decided to cheat on his fiancé with a random woman after hearing a nuclear war was very likely to happen. What trope would that fall under?
resolved Cross-generation crush Film
Do we have anything for the usually comedic situation where a kid has a crush on some adult, obviously one-sided.
resolved Grabbing the sheets Film
A sort of discretion shot to imply sexual activity.
A character's hand, and maybe their bare forearm but no more, is shown on top of a sheet on the bed the character is lying on. The hand is palm down with the fingers spread and the character is implied to be lying supine.
As we watch, the hand grabs the sheet in its fingers and squeezes it tight. Then cut away to another scene entirely.
This doesn't seem to be listed at Hand Tropes.
Edited by marnanelresolved Revealing deeply hidden thoughts or insecurities Film
Alice and Bob have a serious fight. Tensions are high, they are both agitated and as a result Bob says something he would normally just hide or keep to himself - but not an insult to Alice, but revealing is own inadequacy or expressing guilt over something. Both sides of argument instantly realise that this reveal would never happen in other circumstances.
Do we have any trope for this, or does it fall into Freudian Slip?
resolved "Destroy the Mothership" Film
What's the name for the trope where plucky underdogs win against insurmountable odds by destroying some kind of technology that inexplicably has a single point of failure that then destroys/renders inactive all of the enemy forces?
Obvious examples -
- Independence Day
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- The Avengers
resolved Strip of light over character's eyes. Name of the technique? Film
Hey everyone, out of curiosity, what's the name of the effect when there is a strip of light over a character's eyes? For example, in the 1991 Addams's Family film and its sequel 'Values', there are many scenes where Morticia Addams eyes are accentuated (to mimic old vampire movies where this technique was used.
It was also used in the Harry Potter movie on Lucius's Malfoy, 007 with Daniel Craig and so on.
resolved 'Don't shoot me, I'm the real one!' Film
Not sure if this trope is listed already or not, if it is I can't find it.
Basically the scene where there's two versions of the same person (one is an evil clone, or an android, etc...), one of the heroes has a gun and needs to shoot one of the two, but can't figure out which is which.
It usually leads to the two characters having to prove themselves to the one holding the gun, saying something like 'You know it's me, we did that thing together years ago, remember?' Or in comedic scenarios, the duplicate says something overly sappy and sentimental which the hero thinks 'they'd never say that' and shoots them dead for it.
resolved Early Movie Boyfriend Scare Film
Often horror movies will try to open with a scare to keep the audience invested and sometimes those scares end up just being pranks done by a character to prank another character (and also the audience). I've noticed this happens pretty often with jerk boyfriend characters who try to scare their girlfriend with a scary mask or something similar. Bonus points if one of the two ends up getting killed by the movies real threat. Is there a name for this trope?
resolved Chuck E. Cheese’s Five Nights campaign Film
So Chuck E. Cheese’s is doing a “Five Nights of Fun” campaign with an ad designed to resemble the poster for the Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) movie poster and a leaked document telling employees not to acknowledge the chain is just taking advantage of the new movie. I know there’s a trivia trope for this, but I don’t know what it is…
resolved No time to wait for backup Film
Can actually apply to any action movie or show, but appears most frequently in shows about police.
The hero arrives at the bad guy's hideout, and is overwhelmingly outnumbered and outgunned. Any real cop in this situation would call for backup, but there is inevitably SOME reason why, in this particular case, they can't call for backup or don't have time to wait for the backup. The backup, when it does arrive, shows up only just after the hero has handled the situation himself.
resolved fingerprint framing trope? Film
ok so you know like when there's like a cop or something and the person who is thought to be innocent used the thing that the cops want so he touches it then goes "oh nooo my prints are all over it now"
i can't think of an example right now sorry but it goes down pretty much exac the same way tysm bros
resolved Not Sure How To Do Drugs Film
In Film.Cocaine Bear, there is a scene where two children find a package of cocaine and attempt to do it by eating it. They spit it out immediately and they do not get high. What’s the trope for this?
Edited by BigBadShadow25

So I noticed we got McDonalds toys for Captain America: Brave New World a month ago and the movie doesn’t release until February. Is there a trope for when a film’s release date moves but the merch doesn’t?
