Find a Trope:
resolved anxiety to relief to anxiety again
A character is in a very tense situation - and they see something that might change the outcome. They say something along the lines of "Thank God, it's [x]!"
Under normal circumstances this would be good, but due to the situation the character realizes the implications of [x] happening and they immediately reverse their thoughts. "OH GOD NO IT'S [X]"
I remember an old webcomic - There's a guy who realizes that he's woken up late, and he'll be late for school. He falls back asleep, realizing he's an adult and no longer a student. In the next frame he's gotten back up again, remembering that he's a teacher.
resolved Simulation reveal
The movie opens with what seems like an Action Prologue, only to reveal that it's just a movie set or something. Super trope to Danger Room Cold Open.
Edited by Madison14resolved Bike riding
Do we have a trope for when a character is learning to ride a bike? I can recall it happening in king of the hill (Bill's house), Arthur (DW rides again), Bob's burgers (As I walk through the alley in the shadow of ramps) and Rugrats (uneasy rider) just off the top of my head. There's probably more particularly in shows aimed at young kids.
resolved World Of Assholes
I've seen this a lot in isekai media: a world where just about the entire population exists almost solely to humiliate and belittle (or worse) the protagonist like a collective of Jerk Jocks, Alpha Bitches and the Freelance Shame Squad, making it much easier to cheer when horrible things happen to them (not even necessarily at the protagonist's hands).
Like a worse version of All of the Other Reindeer, because here there's no real reason for them to be so gratuitously cruel.
resolved Mistaken for Imprisonment
Is there a trope for when a character thinks he/she is being detained for a crime but is actually able to leave freely or is being detained for something more mundane?
resolved Popularity boost, might be in YMMV or Trivia?
A show/movie/book/whatever receives a massive boost of popularity after being shouted out by another show/book/movie/whatever. I thought it was called the "Conan Effect" or something similar, but searching that brought up nothing.
resolved A dog name Charles Print Comic
Is there a trope for characters such as aliens/monsters/cavemen/animals/robots having regular-sounding names, usually as a joke, or a form of Translation Convention?
resolved Post-Apocalyptic Ferrarri Live Action TV
Is there a trope for characters taking advantage of societal breakdown to use expensive cars and other luxury items? Like if 99% of the world's population is gone, there are lots of ferrarris to go around?
resolved Man-powered aircraft
Exactly What It Says on the Tin - a fragile lightweight flying machine that runs on its pilot's muscle power.
I just hope this doesn't fall under People Sit on Chairs.
Edited by sohibilresolved The scope of Little Professor Dialog
Does Little Professor Dialog pertain to things that are written by a teen?
Specific case: Alice is sort-of a Teen Genius, and she's on record to be Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness when talking about science (and Shrinking Violet on anything else). Alice attempts to join a competition, summer camp, etc. and didn't get in, surprising most people who know her. Turns out, it seems, the problem is her application essay—she pretty much wrote fifty pages on the topic, and clumsily abridged it into two. Does her application essay qualify for Little Professor Dialog?
resolved Everything is a Robot Videogame
In the Mega Man series, not only are there humanoid and industrial robots, which makes sense, but also animal robots, plant robots, robot rocks, robot trees, robot clouds... even mountains in the background have exposed circuitry for some reason. Is there a trope for that?
Edited by Mac_Rresolved Genius cam Film
When a character is a genius, savant, etc., shots from their perspective show things like diagrams and mathematical equations, often in glowing white lines. Like in The Good Doctor.
resolved Blueprints-dropping future villain Film
Is there a trope for a geeky character who's carrying around a bunch of papers (of their own inventions and/or research), who drops them awkwardly, being humiliated by the boss? I noticed it happening with Cheetah in the new Wonder Woman movie, and the same thing happened with Electron in Amazing Spider Man 2, and Catwoman...
resolved Plot-relevant name overlap
Two characters have the same name and this fact affects the plot, usually because other characters mix them up. It's not Names The Same, but none of the "you may be thinking of" things listed there seem to be this either.
Edit from the future: We did not have this, but it has since been launched as Significant Name Overlap.
Edited by wingedcatgirlresolved Alternate Universe Culture
A Parallel Universe where it's mentioned works of art/fiction went in a different direction than ours.
For example, a universe where Tolkien lived long enough to fully complete and revise all his works to his satisfaction but Shakespeare's Hamlet was lost in a fire, one where Harry Potter is only six books long but A Song Of Ice And Fire is finished, etc.
resolved People Hunting Ground
When people are placed in an "hunting ground" to be killed for sport, like the last episodes of Clone Wars season 3, Goldy Pond in The Promised Neverland and the town Bacurau in the movie Bacurau
resolved Borrowing a Game Mechanic from a Sister Series Videogame
I'm looking for a trope to describe a scenario in which a video game creator borrows elements from one of its series to put into another. For example, Company X has been producing Series A for many years. They come out with a new game, Series B, which has a popular new mechanic. When the next iteration of Series A comes out, it includes a very similar mechanic. Two real examples I can think of:
- After years of featuring a Class and Level System, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls series brought in a Skill Scores and Perks system for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, similar to what their Fallout series has featured since its inception.
- After its success in FIFA Soccer, EA brought the micro-transaction loaded "Ultimate Team" over to its other Cash Cow Franchise, Madden NFL.
Is there a trope that covers this? I thought possibly Follow the Leader, with the "leader" in this case being the same company, but it doesn't fit it in my mind. Another key piece is that "Series A" in this case has to have already existed. If it's a new series sharing that mechanic with another of the creator's series, then it would be Creator Thumbprint.
Edited by BeerBaronresolved Hat Leaping Out of Shock
Do we have something that covers when someone's hat jumps off of their head to show their surprise?
resolved Evil hooded fantasy men
Like ringwraiths or dementors. Often on horseback, usually in black. These are so common, I'd be surprised if it wasn't a trope.

A character is so upset that they let their house fall apart. Related to Beard of Sorrow.
