The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at the Trope Launch Pad.
Find a Trope:
openKept awake by soft sounds
There's nothing worse than being kept awake by sounds that are easy to ignore during the day. A creaky floor, wind in the trees, a leaky faucet dripping into the sink, the sound of insects when camping, distant car honks, etc.
- In the Garfield and Friends short "Peace and Quiet" it's a faucet tripping on a pan in the sink.
openInversion of ButterFace?
In Real Life, we plus-sized women have Seen It a Million Times. "Oh, it's a shame you're so heavy. You have such a lovely face. If you lost weight, you'd be really gorgeous."
Is there a trope associated with this, or is it simply an inversion of the Butter Face, where the face is beautiful but the body looks hideous and unsexy?
Edited by BradyLadyopenComputer Misunderstands Command
Do we have a trope for the type of gag in which a person using a digital assistant of some sort, similar to Google's Siri or Amazon's Alexa, but their voice commands are always misunderstood.
For example, in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Drac tells his smartphone that he wants to go on a date, but instead she tells him the day's date.
The LEGO Movie also uses this gag in which Benny asks the computer in the villain's lair to deactivate the shields, and instead it tells him that there are no movies with that title showing in his area.
openDelayed breakup trope
Is there a trope for when Alice is planning to break up with Bob, but something horrible happens in Bob's life, so Alice sticks with him for fear of hurting him more?
openThe Act of Parental Abandonment
Parental Abandonment is a trope where parents aren't around, aren't shown, or are dead. What is the trope for the act where a parent or guardian literally abandons their child, like in a forest, park, or even in the middle of the street? For example, Rukia's sister abandoned her when she was a baby because she could not care for her. Another example is Billy from SHAZAM! (2019), who was abandoned at a fair by his mom. Abandon the Disabled and Doorstop Baby would probably be subtropes.
openRace / Species / Group Identifying Feature?
Race / Species / Group Identifying Feature?
It feels like a trope, something to go in this passage I made on Power Tattoo's description, bolding for this post only:
openThis adjective doesn't describe it... an even more extreme adjective describes it
When a character says something like "It's not great." (Beat) "It's amazing!"
Edited by jandn2014openLow Health, Screen Turns Red Videogame
A trope where if you are low on health, the screen turns red and/or blood gets on the screen. Usually it starts at the edges and gets more intense and closer to the center the lower on health you are.
Edited by DromeoopenYour Tax Dollars At Work
A character complains about an expensive and wasteful project by the government/the police/the armed forces or general incompetence, usually with some variation of the phrase "For this we pay taxes?!" or a sarcastic "Our tax dollars at work."
Sometimes it's just annoyance at government officials, such as a man complaining that for all the taxes he pays the city still hasn't fixed that pothole on Main Street, or the police wanting to know where he was in connection with a crime. Sometimes taken to its illogical conclusion by The Karen via "I pay taxes which pay your salary, therefore you work for me!"
Edited by Chabal2openAwning trampoline
This seems pretty common in video games (especially platformers) and cartoons but I don't seem to find a trope for it. A character jumps out a window or off a roof and lands on an extended awning, which bounces them into the air.
openDifficult witness
The only witness to a crime is someone who is very difficult to get information out of - he may be The Speechless, an amnesiac, a young child, a hater of cops, a foreigner without access to a translator, or just have an unusual way of thinking or describing things. The heroes' goal is to find a way to make him communicate so they can catch the crook. I've seen about three autism movies that use this plot.
Edited by Madison14openClose the hand around the gift Film
I can't believe I'm not finding this one. Alice places a small item of significance in Carol's outstretched hand, then folds Carol's fingers around the item. I've searched every keyword I can think of; do I need to look harder for this?
openPerson punches something hard and it hurts their hand
Is this a trope? I can't think of a fictional example but it's definitely Truth in Television, due to the whole "equal but opposite reaction thing" (i.e if you punch someone in the nose, the same amount of force is applied to your fist. It just takes a lot less force to break a nose than a fist.)
openWeird sitting pose
A character that sits different from the conventional. They could be from a foreigh culture or they're just too cool to sit straight (or other reason).
Example: L from Death Note.
Edited by RodLego10openKid-Only Organization
A secret organization where all of the agents are comprised of children, with very little if any adults.
openLirstname Fastname
A Captain Ersatz's name is made by switching the initials of the actual character's first and last name.
One of the Arsene Lupin novels was originally going to feature Sherlock Holmes, but after Arthur Conan Doyle vetoed it ended up featuring a British detective named Herlock Sholmes.
openhurt others so you don't get hurt first
Is there are trope describing characters who tend to hurt or abandon others because they don't want it to happen to them first/because they have a fear of being the one hurt?

God is depicted as a pair of giant disembodied hands (or maybe just one hand) reaching out from the clouds, possibly with a giant booming voice accompanying them.
Is there a trope for this? Feels like it's common enough to be one, but I can't find it.
