The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at the Trope Launch Pad.
Find a Trope:
open"Time Flies" Song Music
A song, typically a sad one, about how time passes quickly. May also come with a "life is short" message. Do we have this?
EDIT: Also, do we have any tropes for a general "time flies, life is short" message? I checked the Time folder on Stock Aesops, but the only trope there is Like You Were Dying, which is related, but not quite what I'm looking for.
Edited by DrNoPumaopen Dramatic incremental musical parts Music
What I'm thinking about is when a song builds tension, usually at the beginning or the end, by having the individual instruments come in one at a time to layer parts. Examples are the intros of The Smashing Pumpkins' "Cherub Rock
" and Ghost's "Spirit
" (at around the 0:33 mark), and the outro of Nine Inch Nails' "Came Back Haunted
" (pick it up around 3:40).
openNo Title Music
Someone writes a song in 2001 that pretty much describes the unfolding of the decade from 2001-2010, when seen in retrospect.
Is the applicable trope Harsher in Hindsight, Fridge Horror, or something else entirely?
(is working on the Loudness page and wants to make note of the song "Bloody Doom" from Pandemonium.)
openA Kind of music Music
What is the name of the kind of music that use different sfx to make a song?
Like those videos : Among Us Song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5LS4kqJjKo
Why is the Rum gone : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JImcvtJzIK8
openCan't Be With You Song Music
Songs like Jessie's Girl, about being in love with someone who's taken or otherwise unavailable.
openChoir at the end of the song Music
Do we have this trope where the last third of a pop/adult contemporary song is joined with a choir be it a child choir or a gospel choir to make the song sound more epic and/or uplifting?
Songs examples:
- Pat Benatar's "We Belong Together"
- Madonna's "Like a Prayer"
- R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly"
- Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten"
- Paramore's "Ain't It Fun"
openMarching as percussion? Music
Do we have a trope where the primary percussion of a song is made up of marching sounds? Something like Bruise's Theme
from Shadows over Loathing, or "Voss' Conquering Fleet"
from Sentinels of the Multiverse
openIs there a trope that a music video is filmed only inside the recording studio? Music
It's suppose to be a sub trope to Bottle Episode. Could be called "Recording Studio Music Video" where a music video is filmed only inside the recording studio like Eddie Murphy's Party all the time.
openSelf-Cover Music
This is when a musical artist covers themselves, usually to revise an old song.
For example, “21st Century Digital Boy” by Bad Religion was originally on “Against The Grain,” but was rereleased and re-recorded in “Stranger Than Fiction”, to better fanfare.
Same thing with “Welcome to Paradise” by Green Day and “The Carpet Crawlers” by Genesis.
openSinister strings Music
Not "Psycho" Strings. String instruments roll like drums to create a suspenseful or menacing mood. Sounds somewhat like buzzing of a bee swarm. Listen to this track
for better understanding.
openSinging the music? Music
I don't know if this is common enough to be trope-worthy, but. .
Singing the music in a song as if it was part of the lyrics. For example:
Reaching out/ Touching me / Touching you.. / Sweet Caroline (BA BA BA)
Edited by MenaceofMysterioopenAdmirer song Music
Is there a trope for a song about praising someone else and singing about how great that person is?
openSome fans only like a specific part of a song Music
Is there an existing YMMV or Audience Reaction where only specific parts of a song (as in those with a Song Style Shift, or with distinct "heavy parts" or "soft parts") are liked by the listener or fan? In platforms like YouTube where people can post comments, you'd often see someone putting a timestamp to highlight the "best part". Sometimes, uploaders may only take a portion of the song instead of its entirety. Others may do it for fun or memes.
Examples:
- "Shall Never Surrender" from Devil May Cry 4: "Devil May Cry - Shall Never Surrender (Soft Part)"
- "Bury the Light" from Devil May Cry 5: "Bury the light but it's the perfect last chorus."
- "Chop Suey!" by System of a Down: "Chop Suey! But it’s only the good part"
and "Chop Suey (When Angels Deserve To Die) but it's only the softer parts"
- Linkin Park:
- "In the End": "Linkin Park - In the End (Only Chester)"
- "Somewhere I Belong": "Somewhere I Belong but Mike Shinoda has nothing to say"
- "In the End": "Linkin Park - In the End (Only Chester)"
open Song about religious guilt Music
This is for Ghost:
- The song "Spillways" points an accusatory finger at the deep-seated guilt complex that fuels the endless sin/repentance loop, calling it "the cruel beast that you feed" with "your burning, yearning need to bleed / Through the spillways of your soul" (i.e. crying from shame).
Do we have a guilt- or religion-based trope that would cover this?
openAmbiguous Lyrics Music
A song sounds like it could either have lyrics or not, and it's unclear which one of these is actually the case.
For example, the opening of the Pico song
from Friday Night Funkin' can be interpreted either as "go Pico yeah, yeah, go Pico go" or a bunch of simlish, and the rest of the song goes similar.
openGod is a woman? Music
Trying to find a trope for Ariana Grande page:
- Some people interpret the song "God Is A Woman" as literally being about God as a woman, not a Grandpa God, despite the song being about how strong a woman is (according to Word of God, excuse the Pun).
Is there a trope for God not being Grandpa God?
Fanon fits this trope, but not the work page, unless that's on YMMV.
openLyrics in a song can be interpreted a bunch of different ways Music
What would this be? Ambiguous Situation?
Edited by BootlebatopenLast Stanza Tone Switch Music
A singer spends most of a song espousing one opinion, but something happens in the bridge/last stanza that makes them switch to the opposite of said opinion. Examples:
- In J Pee's "I'm Not Gay", the singer spends most of the song insisting that he is not gay even though he keeps grabbing other guys' butts and balls, but when he talks about how hot his crush is, he decides that he is gay after all.
- In the Vocaloid song "You're a Useless Child", the mother spends the entire song berating her son for being stupid and useless. When he kills himself, she regrets her actions and switches from "you're a useless child" to "I'm a useless child".
- In "I'll Try" from Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland, Jane/the singer is feeling hopeless and does not believe in the things that used to make her happy ("I'll try, but it's so hard to believe / I'll try, but I can't see where you see"). After a revelation, she does believe ("So I'll try 'cause I finally believe / I'll try 'cause I can see where you see").
openLong or Overwrought Song Title Music
Long titles, often even verging into full sentences, common to emo music.
Edited by zemiso

E.g. "Down In It" by Nine Inch Nails contains some reshuffled, pitch-shifted material from "Mechanical Movements" by Keith LeBlanc (released earlier in the same year), who was a producer on Down In It and its associated album.
Thinking mostly music but this could be for any medium - Robby the Robot would probably count.
