You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openA General 'Suddenly'
Like 'Suddenly Sexuality' or 'Suddenly Ethnicity' but on a more general scale. Like 'Suddenly This' where all of a sudden a plot point or twist is revealed/was there the whole time that was never hinted at and and simply shoehorned in
openExposition Sink
Somehow every NPC (or minor character) feel the need to tell a random person (player character or protagonist) they just met their whole life story and what's happening.
“Hey, I just met you and this is crazy. But here is my backstory, so help me maybe.”
Edited by AndermannopenGhost Spouse
It' been several months since the main character lost his wife (second overall) to an naval accident and has adjusted life without her, even rekindling his love with his first wife but whenever they're intimitate, the main character freaks out at the sight of his second wife in ghostly form.
opengroups Literature
What trope is used to describing being put into various groups? for example, the Four Houses of Hogwarts in Harry potter, the Cabins in Percy Jackson, the Factions in the Divergent series, and to a lesser extent, the districts in the Hunger Games.
openCharacter discusses about the effects of heroism
Example:
12-year-old Bob, a member of the League enter his home only to be greeted by his father. They have a short conversation Bob's father delivers a speech.
What tropes and type of speech inferred from it?
Edited by AdeptGaderiusopenSpear Counterpart of Schoolgirl Lesbians
Is there a trope that functions as a spear counterpart for Schoolgirl Lesbians? When I looked on the trope page there wasn't one mentioned, and there also wasn't an alternate name that made the trope applicable for males as well as females.
Edited by CyokieRevottopenGonk as an aesthetic
Apparently Gonk only applies to single characters who have a Non-Standard Character Design. What's the trope for an art style where everything is grotesque and deformed?
openWeird Adjective
Is there a trope where fantasy names/organizations/places use unusual endings for their adjectives?
For example:
- In A Song Of Ice And Fire the adjective for people from Westeros is Westerosi.
- In the Warhammer games devotees of Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch and Nurgle are called Khornates, Slaaneshi, Tzeentchians and Nurglites respectively.
openMonster Metaphor
When some kind of creature, usually appearing in the dreams of a character, represents/is actually a metaphor for something else "monstrous" in their life, i.e someone who has abused the character or one of the character's addictions.
openCharacter realizes their flaw once they see it in another character
Example: Alice has moderate anger management issues. When she sees Bob - who has much worse anger management issues - explode over something minor, she realizes that she's not very different and begins working on controlling herself.
openThey should have used this character instead of that one Film
In a show/movie/whatever, a character will take a role in the story that the fans believe should have belonged to another character.
Usually the reasoning is that they believe the other character fits better in that role, that it would have more narrative impact if another character filled that role, or that adding a new character is pointless if a character that already exists can fill the role.
For a recent example, in The Last Jedi, some fans think Admiral Ackbar or Leia should have taken the place of Admiral Holdo.
openMomentary Lucidity
Someone, who's either: insane, Brainwashed and Crazy, possessed, etc. suddenly has a moment where they calm down and speak normally, usually to someone else; what they said during this moment tend to be important in one way or another. Then the character goes back to being insane, Brainwashed and Crazy, possessed, etc.
Do we have something like this?
openMystery of the Moon's Dark Side
A trope about mysteries surrounding the side of the moon that never faces the earth. Usually, there's something interesting lying there.
Do we have something like this?
openWearing random objects as jewelry
A character wears distinctly non-jewelry items as if they were jewlry. This can be either just throwing them on (a gear worn as a ring, a smalp chain as a necklace, etc) or MAKING jewelry out of junk.
Do we have a specific trope for this?
openRelationship
Is there a trope describing someone that's in a relationship with someone due to something like blackmail, like the person doesn't want to be in a relationship with this specific person but due to certain circumstances they have no choice.
openCutscene / Dialogue Dissonance Videogame
Is there a trope for when the visuals in a cutscene contradict in-game dialogue or Flavor Text?
The example in question is from Iron Helix. The "Iron Helix" is a weapon that is consistently described as a Synthetic Plague / Depopulation Bomb, but the Game Over cutscene that shows it being activated depicts an Earth-Shattering Kaboom instead.
The book is set during 2018 and one chapter has a character walk through hometown New York City before spotting a graffiti mural of the recently-deceased Stan Lee. The character looked up at the sky and resumed his walk.
