Find a Trope:
openMomentum-Breaking Vacation
This character has been currently seeking revenge against those in his hometown nonstop. Then, a good friend invites him to go out of the country for a month vacation. The character agrees, seeing he has nothing to lose. However ,when he returns, he experiences a creative slowdown when trying to come with new ways to hurt those who hurt him.
openCar tail lights go off
When a character is introduced or they enter the scene, the camera focuses on tail lights while they turn off.
openFridging, Collateral Angst, or something else?
In the Sherlock Holmes fanfiction "The End of All Things" by Marcia Wilson - Mary and Arthur Watson are killed in a cab accident. There are people who wish the Watsons harm, but they weren't responsible for the accident. Watson had been holding back on telling the authorities all he knew about the villains in order to protect his loved ones, but the death of his wife and son enabled him to begin cooperating fully with Scotland Yard to bring the villains to justice.
1. What is the trope regarding Mary's death? She was Put on a Bus in the Holmes Canon, and a vague reference to Watson's sorrow is our only indicator that the bus crashed. Arthur is an original character to the fic. Marcia Wilson fleshed out Mary more, making her a central character almost equal to John Watson, and I certainly got attached to her as a person and not a cardboard cutout while reading. They Were Holding You Back, maybe?
2. Does that make Watson a Crusading Widower? He doesn't directly go after the cabman who crashed into Mary and Arthur's car, or express any murderous intent. He only fully commits to the investigation.
Edited by annieholmesopenThis feels like a casting gag Live Action TV
In the Community episode Community S 3 E 22 Introduction To Finality we find out that a character has a novel called The Science of Death Faking by Chris Branan. Christopher Branan was a set designer on Community. I don't know what this Shout-Out to the set designer would be? It feels like it should be a trope or trivia trope yet I don't know which one.
openRearranging Internal Organs
We have Man in the Machine for someone needing to be put in a life-support suit. Do we have a different, more specific Body Horror trope for that someone's internal organs being rearranged to fit inside said life-support suit?
openPast work too embarrassing to show to a particular person
Let say, Alice wrote a few romance novels where the Love Interest is based on the image of her crush Bob. And now the two are in a stable relationship, and Alice finds those works too embarrassing to show to Bob. However, there're no indication that the work has any quality or Values Dissonance problem otherwise.
- Is this still Old Shame?
- If it isn't, does this belong to any trope?
openbaby shoves their face into their birthday cake
What would this be? I'm thinking a combination of Jabba Table Manners and Pie in the Face
openI’m too dangerous for you to be around
Pushing someone away because you think you’re too dangerous to be around.
resolved Child is the Password
Do we have trope where the password is the name of a kid of whoever set it up? Something used to show how important the kid is to them.
openStraw Fanfic
When fanfic shows up in fiction, it always seems to be treated as part of the lower 90% in quality, as a negative trait or used to further highight was a loser the fanfic's author is. Almost always mentioned as being erotic in nature, very long, usually starring the Author Avatar as a Mary Sue, etc.
openPlush shaking
Stories told through moving plushies around, like SuperMarioLogan and Cute Mario Bros. Asking because I found a media page on the side of the road. It's Web Original/Vesterandfriends.
openFather embaressed by his children flirting Literature
The father while isn't overprotective is horrified by his children flirting and will often walk out of the room or put on a embarrassed face. Is there a trope for that?
openTwo best friends mistaken for a gay couple Literature
Is there a trope for two best friends who are gay but aren't for each other? They raise a child and a share a bed together (for financial purposes) but aren't actually a thing. They aren't asexual either. Though they are mistaken for being a couple, all the time.
Edited by Gintama200openThat thing where time travellers think cars are demons
You know how in fantasy/sci-fi there's that common trope where someone comes from the past or an equivalent fantasy realm and are terrified of the modern world? I've noticed that at least in Buffy/Angel, and I'm certain a few others, they'll tend to interpret cars as demons. Is there a trope for this?
Edited by JzadekopenMultiple Titles?
Do we have a trope for when a single work has been released under several titles like the way really low-budget horror movies often are?
openAlways flashing large amounts of money around
What's the trope for a character who casually just goes around with huge amounts of cash? Someone who goes ahead and overspends on everything, sometimes to a comical degree.
For example, in Lucifer, the title character has pizza delivered at the beginning of one episode and pulls out an entire wad of $100 bills that he hands over to the delivery boy. He has a tendency to do similar things throughout the series.
Edited by BattleMasteropenFour Tropes
I'm looking for four tropes (natch), which I've managed to compile into a single scene.
- A man is wandering around a small town, when he come across a small Cat Girl. After introducing himself to said Cat Girl, she responds with nothing more than a small "Mew!" After a short Beat in which he just stands there like a statue, he develops a small nosebleed, seemingly at-random, then promptly falls flat on his face like an overturned mannequin in the span of an instant, startling the Cat Girl, who looks around with a "what just happened" kind of look.
- Things that can kill people (or at least induce sezures/heart attacks) just by being cute.
- Nosebleeds that are not caused by direct injuries.
- An act that can only be described as a full-body Face Plant.note I'm thinking some form of Fainting, though something more akin to Face Plant may be better.
- Individuals being capable of doing "non-standard" things without realizing it, and being just as confused as everyone else when said things happen.
- Cuteness Overload
- Nosebleed (natch)
- Face Fault/"Emotional" Fainting
- Achievements in Ignorance (maybe)
In the source material, the protagonist gives a flashback after establishing his character. In the adaptation, though, that flashback is put in the beginning, and then Time Skip to Present Day, where the story continues.
- Is there a trope for this change?
- In the adaptation, that "flashback" is started by saying it was in the past. Is that a trope, or is it too Chairs?
