The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at the Trope Launch Pad.
Find a Trope:
openCharacter staggering from dizziness
What's the trope called when somebody starts staggering and walking oddly because they are dizzy (i.e. have been spinning around a lot)?
openGood Powers, Good People
Do we have a trope for the tendency to give good people "good" powers? We have Bad Powers, Bad People but strangely not the polar opposite.
resolved Expert through Experience
Do we have a trope where something happens to a person so often that they become an expert at it?
openEvil Single Carriage Passenger
The scene is usually medieval (give or take a few hundred years). A small carriage pulled by at least 2 and usually 4 horses conveys but a single passenger, usually a dignitary, ambassador, high-ranking cleric or even a prince. As soon as this character emerges, sniffing the air and looking around scornfully, you know he's evil, and will (hopefully) meet his bad end, usually in the last 10 minutes of the film.
Is there a trope for this, the "Evil Single Passenger"? Note that the trope could also include a sedan-chair, or a river barge, The common factor is that a lot of effort is being put into transporting just one important person.
openReally good lung capacity
Self-explanatory. A character, singer, actor, or what-have-you has some freakin' 10-gallon lungs.
openWhen nations or other large entities avoid massivw wars through formalised conflicts
e.g. some sort of combat by champion, or formalised, gamelike battles with a limited number of soldiers.
Or just straight up deciding the outcome via sports.
openSolve then Explain
Two characters are in a situation where they have to solve a problem or a puzzle. Alice immediately solved the puzzle leaving a confused yet amazed Bob. Afterwards, She then explains to Bob in detail how she was able to find the solution to the problem.
open“Please, Mr. X Is My Father. Call me Y.”
Kind of self explanatory. A child of a person doesn’t want to be referred to the same way their parent is, for whatever reason. Usually the parent is famous or at least well-known by the protagonist, but not always.
openCast size larger than it seems?
Is there a trope for where a show's cast size is larger than at face value, for example, if the OBB (opening billboard), listed 22 characters, but in reality, there's actually 38 characters (with the other 16 listed in the closing credits)?
The characters are main characters, not bit-part or a One-Shot Character, and aren't a Victim of the Week.
This would be for a show that has an OBB, like Law And Order Special Victims Unit or Supergirl (in this example, assume it's a Continuity Reboot that takes the original series in Broad Strokes.).
Is there such an example of a credit from the Credits Tropes for this?
Edited by Merseyuser1openPuzzle Master
Do we have a trope for a character who is skilled at setting up puzzles for the other characters to solve?
Not Puzzle Boss.
openTrope for when a character transform and it's covered with smoke or alike.
Is there a name for like when a character transform and then there's smoke that covers them.
Example: "
"
openLeaving young children behind during an escape
Watched Planet of the Apes (2001)—when a group of slaves escape, they decide their little girl is too young to survive the trip, so they leave her behind in the care of a house slave. I know I've encountered this situation in other media too—such as in Civil War stories. Do we have a name for this trope?
openNo Title Music
Is there a trope for a song that's sung entirely in a nonsense/non-existent language? I can only think of two definite examples and one "maybe" one: the Ending Credits track for Coraline, "Almateria" from the Tales Of Symphonia anime, and (the "maybe" one) "Life Returns" from Fire Emblem Path Of Radiance, although that one is just backwards Japanese. I'm sure there's probably more I haven't heard/am not thinking of.
openNo Title
Is there a trope for when someone returns to a place, after not being there for a long time, and sees sorta ethereal younger versions of them self (and others) representing their memories of that place. The only work offhand I know this is in is Astonishing X-Men #1, when Kitty Pryde sees her memories of Xavier's mansion, though I've seen it in other stuff. My mum also directly referred to this sort of trope when she visited my university (which used to be her and my dad's university) after not being here for 23 years, commenting that she could almost see ethereal versions of herself and my father walking the hallways.
openNo Title Literature
This is a repeating theme in mythology: a human (usually a woman) is created by magic or the gods but they forget to give it some vital function such as morality, wisdom, patience or caution. Human naturally does something horrific because of this lack. I can't think of the trope title for this.
openNo Title
I have tried this one before but I don't think anyone found it:
Alice and Bob are best friends and get into an argument. Alice yells "I can find a better best friend than you!" and Bob says the same. Alice finds a new friend who turns out to be just like Bob (and may be played by the same actor), Bob finds a new friend who is just like Alice, and then Alice and Bob realize they need each other and make up. The new friends will usually go off with each other as well. Seen It A Million Times

The Audience Surrogate is also the character who has the least in common with the audience.
In The Chronicles Of Wormwood, three of the characters go on a guided tour of Heaven and Hell. Since two of them are a brain-damaged Jesus and the Anti-Anti-Christ (who's giving the tour), the only character left to ask the same questions as the audience (how do you get into Heaven, how do you get into Hell, where's Hitler, etc.) is a talking pet rabbit.
