Find a Trope:
openObscured face of someone hanging Anime
I often see this in many different Japanese media, where the face or upper body of someone who hanged themselves is obscured from the audience. Is there a trope for this?
opencharacters freefalling in the sky during OP Anime
Title self explanatory, usually a shot of the cast one by one either falling out of the sky or just moving in a forward trajectory in the sky with no ground beneath them
resolved Character's subtitle appearing in big bold text Anime
(The hero appears) Text appears behind him, in large letters SAVIOR OF THE SOUL AND SKY
(Antagonist rises from his throne to fight him) Once again, the same text, but could be a different font, color and styling as an artistic choice END OF ALL MANKIND
Is there a trope for that kind of thing?
openA Trope For Switching Position With Someone Anime
Which trope works best when two people end up switching position at the end of a series?
I'm wondering this because the example I was thinking of was for Bokurano, where the Yamura siblings stay at their home because they're waiting for their father to come home. Towards the end of the series, the father returns, but the siblings remain because they are now waiting for Daichi to return.
Since the characters in this example are related, would that be a case of Generation Xerox?
openCharacter gains power of enemy Anime
Is there a named trope where a character gains the power of the thing they hate or their enemy? Specific examples would be Eren from Attack on Titan wanting to kill all titans but then gaining the ability to become one, or Tokyo Ghoul where the main character is forced into becoming a ghoul. Other examples would be Nezuko from Demon Slayer, Shinichi from Parasyte, Denji from Chainsaw Man. Use Their Own Weapon Against Them is close but not quite.
openAlmost real metaphoric imagery Anime
An action's metaphor is portrayed almost literally when the character does an action.
For example: Alice and Bob are top players fighting in a badminton tournament. Alice does her special move "Meteor Smash" where IRL she's just smashing the shuttlecock really well but it shows a literal meteor coming down and creating an explosion, with the audience blocking the light, impact, smoke, etc. with their arms. Of course, everyone is actually fine right afterwards and nothing actually happened, but the audience's shock was still real in that sense.
Most common in sports anime.
Edited by NestlingOwletopenVisible Veins Anime
Not Tainted Veins nor Volcanic Veins, but veins that are still prominently visible, such as when blood flow is increased to a notable degree. I'm specifically thinking of the Byakugan from Naruto, and how when it's activate, the veins on the user's face around their eyes become more visible.
openAnime crazy angle? Anime
Is there a trope discussing the use of this angle to depict impending insanity? https://twitter.com/Cloud9/status/1243273207240478720
openOverprotective Male Lead Anime
I put this under Anime for now but this is a trope that really seems to pop up in South Korean manwhas and webnovels which is that the male lead/live interest (ML) in the orbit of the female lead (FL) will get very possessive of her regardless of the rest of their characterization. It usually includes a scene where the clueless FL witnesses the ML and another male character clearly going out of their way to prove who she likes more. The other man doesn’t even have to be romantically a rival - it could be a male friend, a father, brother, or even a child - even THEIR child! And woe the ML who is going up against an Overprotective Dad…
It seems to be seen as a positive trope in South Korea because men competing to show affection to the FL is a romantic power fantasy and the ML being so devoted as to be possessive is a sign he’s THE ONE. But due to Values Dissonance readers in Western countries understandably get very creeped out by it and notably complain about M Ls when they start invoking this. To the point where the rare romance that DOESN’T use the trope is praised just for showing a ML who is secure enough in himself and the FL’s feelings that he doesn’t feel threatened by every man on the planet.
This isn’t a Yandere - the ML will only resort to violence if someone is actually threatening the life or safety of the FL, not to win his ego-stroking contest. I’m trying to see if there’s a trope this culture-specific incarnation could fall under because even if there’s a Korean way it’s expressed I’m certain there must be a global trope.
openBravery Born out of Ignorance Anime
A character seemingly shows bravery, but he is actually genuinely unaware of the dangers he sleepwalked into. Do we have this one?
Edited by KitezhopenCharacter's eyes temporarily disappear from their face Anime
It shows up in Western media too, but this is a trope I most strongly associate with anime and manga. Similar to Dull Eyes of Unhappiness, it's a thing where a character who is depressed, dead, enraged, or at their lowest in a more comical sense, has a gloomy/ominous darkness over the upper half of their face and sometimes no visible eyes.
openVery Short Episodes Anime
Is there an index for series that have unusually short episodes for their medium? For example, the anime episodes of Joshi Kausei and I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying are only about 3 minutes long, compared to a more usual 20-25 minutes. And there are several manga series that have chapters only a few pages long (I'm not talking about Yonkoma, this is something different).
openThe doomed stack of papers Anime
In a comedic anime, if you see someone carrying a stack of sheets of paper, there's roughly a 95% chance they will stumble and the papers will go everywhere, forcing them to start frantically picking them up. Is there a specific trope page for this? Or is it a subtrope of something?
openHidden Conversation Double Meaning (SOLVED) Anime
Is there a trope for when a character is wearing a Hidden Wire (or a high-tech/magical equivalent), and attempting to have a conversation with someone in real life and on the other side of the wire at the same time?
For instance, Alice is hiding in a flower shop (and a cop is probably following her) while Bob is killing people for her and telling her about it through the hidden earpiece:
Bob: Yeah so I just killed one of the guys in New York. Alice (looking at a flower, talking into the wire): That's beautiful. I love it! But... I was hoping for something more European. Clerk: You mean you want a flower from Europe? Bob (at the same time, on the earpiece): You mean you want me to kill the italian guys too? Alice (to both): Yes, that would be perfect.
So, the cop following her assumes she's just shopping and not involved with the killings.
Edited by PisthetairosopenTrope contrasting "The Millstone" Anime
Sinc the description of The Millstone is: "A useless member of The Team that actually makes things worse than if they weren't there." I'm looking for the exact opposite: "A useful member of The Team whose departure makes things worse." Since it's been appearing in several manga adapted from Light Novels (like Banished From The Heros Party and Beast Tamer And The Cat Girl), I think we have this trope somehow.
Edited by VelvetPierrotopenReal accident in middle of test Anime
An inversion of Training "Accident".
The characters are taking a test and assumes any accident and incident is just part of the test and responds accordingly. However, the truth is, it really was an accident. How the test-takers respond will really gain the testers' attention. Usually by impressing them by, again, dealing with the accident accordingly.
openVisual Echo Anime
Is there a page for specifically visual versions of Meaningful Echo? Things like Sasha's uppercut that she uses against her dad and again against a Titan, in a kind of Chekhov's Trauma way, or Iroh's use of other bending stances to improve his firebending.
I've listed this as anime because AoT was the show that brought on this question, but this can really happen in any visual medium. It could even be in a book, I guess, if it was narration/action instead of dialogue that's being repeated. Any term for this kind of Call-Back?
Edited by TintenseheropenKick saves the dog Anime
We all know that someone bad can Kick the Dog.
Sometimes, unbeknownst to the bad person, the dog deserves it, it's Kick The Son Of A Bitch.
But what if, also unbeknownst to the bad person, the dog was eventually saved by the kick? Say, a truck drove over that place some seconds later.
So, I'm looking for a trope where a bad deed unintentionally leads to averting a greater evil.

A trope that involves a character using a party consisting of Mons that are all the same gender as the character themself.
Similar to how a lot of Gym Leaders in the older Pokemon games had their party filled with pokemon of their gender, like Sabrina's female Mr. Mime, or Elesa and Clay in Black/White having female-only and male-only parties, respectively.
Would this still fall under One-Gender Race?
