openRelated To Fictional Character
A form of in-universe Historical Character's Fictional Relative where a character in a work is related to or even descended from a character from a pre-existing work. Often combined with Shout-Out where the older character isn't directly named or shown (due to IP issues since it would essentially make both works part of the same continuity).
- In Sequential Art, Pip Mc Graw is a penguin with a criminal uncle named Feathers, Feathers Mc Graw is a penguin burglar in Wallace And Gromit.
- In Star Trek, Spock is implied to be descended from Sherlock Holmes.
- There's a French comic about a telepathic woman whose powers are thought to be due to being descended from Joan Of Arc's brother.
- A number of European rulers commissioned genealogies that connected them to mythological figures like Hercules.
openLate Dub For You
- A franchise receives a new dub starting from a later installment or spin-off.
- A game is dubbed in another language starting from a later update (if it's live-service) or in an Updated Re-release.
It's like saying a franchise/work started off as a No Dub for You example, but it would then be dubbed in another language later on. Perhaps it also means No Dub for You gets "zig-zagged" in a way... but since Trivia can't be played with, I'm looking for another specific Trivia instead, if it already exists.
openAlluding to a real world event Live Action TV
What trope is used when a character refers to something reported in the real world news? It could be anything from a major world event to just a bit of celebrity gossip.
Thanks.
opensucky summer
When Summer is portrayed as something bad/unpleasant (most often due to it being really hot), rather than being portrayed as a positive thing, which is more common. The song Cruel Summer by Bananarama would be a text book example. The closest thing I can think of is Bright Is Not Good, but that's not about Summer specifically.
openPragmatic Showoff
A character criticized for using flashy techniques or seeming to show off points out that there's actually a point to it: It ensures everyone's attention is on them, allowing allies to move or attack unimpeded, or distracts the enemies at an important point.
In The Fifth Elephant, Vimes gets out of an ambush by making a big deal out of appearing unconcerned and taking his time to light a cigar before shooting a man with a crossbow. Later when he's chided for it, this exchange happens:
- "We don't... grandstand.""Grandstand?""That business with the cigar…""You mean, when I shut my eyes and they had to look at a flame in the darkness?""Ah... But they might have shot you there and then.""No. I wasn't a threat. And you heard his voice. I hear that sort of voice a lot. He's not going to shoot people too soon and spoil the fun."
openForgotten Goal
A character has been at a task for so long they actually forgot the endgoal, or has memory issues that make them forget what it was. Not necessarily The Dark Side Will Make You Forget, it can apply to characters who are still heroic.
openRecipient of Forgiveness
I would like to know is there a trope for the recipient of forgiveness? As I asked here
, it was noted Turn the Other Cheek should go to the one giving forgiveness, but we weren't sure if Forgiveness in itself is a character trope and would go with the recipient.
resolved Flipping character image/sprite to indicate looking around Videogame
Commonly seen in visual novels/similar forms of 2D storytelling using character sprites drawn at a 3/4 view. To show a character turning to face the opposite direction, instead of drawing more sprites to show them facing the other way, the character's sprite is simply flipped or mirrored. This is especially obvious if the character has an asymmetrical design as details will be on the "wrong side" of the character. I think this can fall under Limited Animation (even though it's not exactly animation— more of conserving resources/cutting corners) but I'm wondering if there's a trope specific to this type of thing...
openMeta Artistry Trope Videogame
Do we have a trope where an artistic element, such as a logo, was designed In-Universe by a member of the cast? If it is multiple tropes that cover this kind of topic, all the better, but they have to be character tropes.
openThis is some serious business Anime
Used for characters who tend to take relatively transgressions (i.e. Boundary violations, Borrowing others belongings without permission, etc) overly seriously and often show remorse through shedding fountains of tears, apologizing excessively, getting gifts for their friends they've hurt etc to overcompensate for their past mistakes which while admirable can also come across as performative and attention seeking for past issues that aren't that big of a deal.
Edited by Hazzmatt321openIgnoring spatial orientation
Inspired by what I first thought on seeing the original name of this TLP proposal
(Ignoring Orientation), is there a trope about a character acting like they're affected by gravity but not in the direction everything else is? Like a character focused Gravity Screw. Sometimes a one off gag, other characters may have or be able to take on this property as in intrinsic trait.
For example, Ugg and Wrong-Way from Q*bert hop on the sides of the pyramid's cubes, acting like gravity is pulling them toward the upper-left and upper-right respectively.
Edited by homogenizedopenTeam of adventurers embarking on a quest.
Namely, seeking gold and killing monsters. An example is the novel "Below" by Lee Gaiteri. Another example is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, all games. They may even face a big bad outside of the dungeons, but the main thing is 1) forming a team 2a) finding a treasure or 2b) finishing the quest 3) killing the enemies who stands in the dungeon.
Edited by luigirovattiresolved Circular Character Arc
A character develops a lot across the story, but by the end they are in a similar place personality-wise to where they were at the start. Might include things like Acquired Situational Narcissism, Heel–Face Revolving Door, Aesop Amnesia and Compressed Vice, but this is a more general trope.
Edited by king15openLaundry List of Generic Charities
A character who is supposed to be kind and virtuous does an improbable amount of charity and volunteer work usually involving animals, disabled people, and/or orphaned children from third world countries. This trope happens so often that when a character is said to do lots of charity work, it often turns out to be a lie to make themselves look better.
Edited by SnowskyopenAPP The God of Running Gags
Do we have a trope for when a single character is involved in a lot of running gags and/or once an episode jokes? If we do, what is it called?
Edited by MssCurllsresolved Any help???
So I'm making a story, and I thought of a scenario for it, and I wanna know if there's any tropes that fit it. You could also bring up some other tropes you found in my scenario if you want :)
(NOTE: THE STORY IS NOT RELEASED YET AND THIS IS FOR THE FUTURE IF I RELEASE IT)
So basically, the characters were getting through a forest, and they had to tame a creature called a Parabloom to help in battle since they were underleveled, but the Parabloom, who they called Cam, ended up being a HUGE liability, distracting the players by attacking them (tamed enemies can't commit friendly fire), ignoring all enemies _even when attacked,_ and running around the forest going through invisible walls (and the floor) before returning with a HORDE OF STRONG ENEMIES FOLLOWING IT. It got so bad that the players tried to put an end to it.
(The following part should only be used to find other tropes)
So Crabapple and Shelly caught Cam and put it into a trap to stop it, and Cam's AI freaked out, causing it to ascend rapidly, past the dense cluster of vines that stops players from flying too high, and randomly die in midair, spending only 7 minutes in the team. Nobody cared, since they had 31 tamed Parablooms, they just didn't want to waste them since they were all high leveled and tamed creatures get Permadeath as soon as they join the party.
Tl;dr: Character gets invited to a team, but ends up being a liability.
Edited by FishycarpTOASTEDopenCrush On The Matchmaker
A type of Dramatic Irony where the person playing matchmaker doesn't notice the person they're trying to set up on a date is in love with them. Often there's also a good reason a relationship would be a bad idea (the matchmaker is already married, is much older, has zero interest in the person, etc.).
For instance, Alice keeps trying to set Bob up on dates with her friends/relatives/etc., despite it being blatantly obvious Bob has a crush on her. Or Daniel encourages Carla to go out and date instead of spending her time hanging out with him (again, oblivious to why she spends her time hanging out with him).
openA person who has everything and therefore valued nothing
I'm looking for a trope where a person who is basically so rich that they lost sight of the true value of what they have and sees it as something they take for granted.
Like an example would be having so much money where they would actively destroy cars knowing they can just buy more
openWhen the whole town is X
Looking for the trope where someone goes someplace looking for a monster and then the whole place is FULL of monsters. Everyone's a monster. The initial suspect, the off-putting neighbors, even the baby.
The only example I can think of is the X-Files Episode Bad Blood, where they go to a small Texan town to track down a presumed vampire. At the end of the episode, it turns out the entire town were full of vampires. Go figure.
I swear its been used before too, but I can't name anything right off the top of my head.

Is there a trope that’s like “What he say fuck me for?” When characters get bundled into things they had no idea about, all I can think of is 50 Cent’s video.
