Ask the Tropers:
resolved May I translate a trope page?
I've noticed some work pages have translated versions but I've never seen a trope page have one, so I'd like to know if it would be allowed to make such thing. If that's the case, I'll be thankful to know what kind of guidelines to follow to make one.
resolved Custom title for Adventure!
Has Adventure always had a custom display that adds an exclamation mark on the end? While it is fitting with the spirit of the genre, it makes it a bit clunky to use in descriptions, unless a pothole is used. For instance, the page I noticed it on, Land of the Lost, is a Science Fiction Adventure Comedy.
EDIT: I have created new pages for the tabletop and video game. Can the custom display be removed?

Smarties Scorn Schooling
It is when an obviously intellectual genius who thinks (and sometimes believes) that they are way too smart and intelligent to learn, grow, and evolve more, despite coming and going to and from school, college, university, etc.
Education is a crucial factor in determining success in today’s society. Many individuals aspire to attend college to gain knowledge, skills, and credentials that can/will lead them to successful careers. However, not all famous and successful people have followed the traditional path of attending college. There are numerous examples of famous high school dropouts, college non-graduates, and geniuses who failed in school but still have achieved greatness in their respective fields. They have defied to societal norms and pursued their passions, using their own talent, determination, and resilience to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Their stories serve as inspirations, showing that formal education is not always the only path to success and that passion, hard work, and perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievements. These individuals have left a lasting impact on their respective industries and have become icons in their own right, proving that success happens through different avenues, and education, while valuable, is not always necessarily the sole determinant of one’s success in life.
It's when a person or character is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable (both in personality and alot in life). Not just because whether if they are certified geniuses, straight-arrow know-it-alls, top intellects, and whatnot. Not to mention stating and/or claiming that they don't have to, want to, or even need to learn or educate (even when and while they're still at school, college, or university in the classroom). Of course sure enough, they are smart, but they still need to learn more to really use that potential, grow as a person, dedicate themselves into studying, working harder or smarter, listening and paying attention to class, specialize in educational purposes, etc. Other times to those with a zest and passion for learning and growing little more each day, a vast majority yet might even face struggles, failures, and rejections to deal with and sort through important issues like... time management, organization, scheduling, prioritizing class work, assignment clarification, orientation, study skills, (that's right, you name it!) to teach hard to provide the students proper knowledge and hopes of providing them educational experiences. That's not enough to never give up and keep pursuing their goals until they succeed.
Because they already have an IQ at its highest level of knowledge and intelligence, they can and can't deal with things such as... answering questions and/or following instructions quickly and easily (never mind correctly and properly). This along with avoiding and evading other stuff including multitasking, workload, extra pressure, etc. Other times, most people, with the inclusion of any school students, are very much convinced that they already know how to do a certain thing without following tutorials, advice, or why not perhaps even simply trying to live up to one's standards and expectations. Either the easy way or hard way, whether the right way or wrong way, some and most people intend to think that they know everything and are particularly good at and capable of it.
Most people nowadays are constantly finding ways to get smart fast such as using the computer, watching TV, listening to the radio, talking on the phone, and a majority of the time, reading a book to increase and improve their knowhow. Regardless of having with that said though, other people (including those who are forced to use desperate measures rather than what it truly takes and means to know and get it) would sometimes, if not often, use many very different ways to become super intelligent in a way that seems strange to you and me, such as taking "make-you-smart" nootropics or drinking something referred to as a "brain and memory enhancing elixir", which might or might not work and/or exist. That and it may be pretty apparent enough to note and to point out that drinking a non-existent potion or using an inventory item thereof doesn't make you smarter, reading does!
No matter what they do or where they are (and especially how they try to improve, develop, and enrich more often than now or never), depending on and regardless of one's skillset and competencies, it is required and intended that education is actually considered ideal to captivate and stimulate one another for a pleasurable experience in understanding, honoring, and preserving different (and sometimes traditional) ways of knowing, teaching, and learning. Not just that, despite their simple refusal to participate and attend in paying attention or dedicating themselves into working and studying, they'd end up doing so anyhow, whether they like/deserve it or not, and no matter how subnormal and illiterate they are in any measure. And that goes for trying and failing to improve, develop, and enhance their level(s) of focus, memory, and concentration in the process as a result.
In fiction, intelligence is depicted as "knowing stuff", and in stories where someone becomes more intelligent, this will be demonstrated by them "knowing more stuff". But here is the thing, this isn't how knowledge works. That person, no matter how intelligent they are, will have had to learn those things from somewhere (i.e. school, books). In other words, an intelligent person innately knowing something without having to study or go through schooling where intelligent characters know things without having learned them (a smart character who hates school, or does poorly in school for reasons other than intelligence). Even then, lacking capacity explains it all, a person who is a genius in a field scorns standard ways (and even desperate needs) of instruction in said field.
Not to be confused in connection and relation with and to many other tropes with and of the similar concept and information, including but not limited to: Insufferable Genius, Know-Nothing Know-It-All, Screw Learning, I Have Phlebotinum!, Too Clever by Half, Brilliant, but Lazy, Book Dumb, The Smart Guy, etc.
Examples
- Zigzagged in Calvin and Hobbes: Calvin is quite intelligent and frequently discusses topics that very few six-year-olds would even think about like world politics and philosophy, but at the same time he's six years old, and so hates school because it's terminally boring (as he puts it, they don't teach about dinosaurs so why pay attention?). His ego is also quite disproportionate, claiming that his grades being worse than Einstein's prove he's smarter.
- Big Hero 6: Hiro Hamada is a genius young prodigy whose vast intellect allowed him to graduate high school when he was 13. However, instead of building on his intellect like his brother Tadashi, who attended their local tech university, Hiro believed college to be a waste of time. Instead, he prefers spending his time participating and betting in illegal botfighting, swindling other botfighters for money. When a botfight that went south wounds up getting both Hiro and Tadashi (as well as all the participants) arrested, it's what pushes Tadashi to get Hiro to look at college more seriously by showing him what he actually does there. Thankfully, this actually works and convinces Hiro to give it a try.
- Rick and Morty:
- In the pilot episode, the highly intelligent Rick dismisses school as a "waste of time".
- In "The Ricks Must Be Crazy", both Rick and the alien scientist Zeep claim that they dropped out of school, stating that it's "not a place for smart people".
- Albert Einstein used to hate his Munich school to the point that he dropped out.
resolved Evil Philanthropy? Live Action TV
I feel like this trope already exists, but is there one for "evil philanthropy?" Such as: "Villain character with a good persona has a global plan/initiative which gets the majority of the world on board because they have no clue he's evil and it sounds too good?"
Some examples would include:
- Kingsman: The Secret Service - Valentine's status as an environmentalist and a philanthropist means he can easily promote the SIM cards that turn people evil, selling it as free WIFI
- Utopia (British TV show) - Mr Rabbit's plan involves a simultaneous global vaccination plan, which most people would get on board with due to how it's done to promote world peace.
resolved Need help finding the work for this work page Web Original
WebVideo.Proxy was made in 2013 by a troper whose last edit was in 2017. It's unindexed, has only one wick on R-Rated Opening, and the description has no traces to the work's creator. Also, it's in the wrong namespace - if it's a fan-made anime, it should be in WebAnimation/.
I've tried looking for it
, but no dice note (It's a Creepypasta fan-work in an anime style titled after the common term for anyone who serves Slenderman, the results are as non-specific as they get). There's an incorrectly used review asking where to even find this work. I wonder if it should be moved to Darth or I haven't dug deep enough.
resolved can i just... make a page?
I recently made a sandbox page for Kid A Mnesia Exhibition. I was wondering if I'm allowed to just make it an “official" page thanks in advance.

resolved Persistent misindentation Music
Previously, on Refrain from Assuming, freshslim added a sub-bulleted example under a work (well, musician) that already had an existing example, without adjusting the indentation. I sent them an Ignored Comment notifier because there's a commented-out disclaimer at the top of the article reminding tropers to keep Example Indentation rules in mind. Unfortunately, they made the same mistake once again
, as those two sub-bulleted examples are under another first-bullet entry and they didn't account for proper indentation.

resolved Confrontational troper is back at it again
So, a couple of weeks ago i filed a report
on Darth Davros 75 for being argumentative, rude, and confrontational. A bunch of tropers also came forward with their experiences on them and they also have a history of making unilateral changes without consensus. Despite a warning from the mods, their behavior hasn’t changed. He called the format we used to separate tropes ugly and lazy
and when another troper tried debating them, they rudely said that what we all want looks worse
. This was after they unilaterally changed something again.

resolved Complaining about Gorillas
Dear tropers, how come Ultra-Humanite has the handy feet trope added to his page but not Gorilla Grodd. There is absolutely no time where Ultra-Humanite had handy feet and my guess is that some people assumed that all Gorillas have this. So if that's the case, how come Gorilla Grodd or Solovar don't have this trope added to their respective pages?
resolved Fire Emblem edit war
- Dimitri from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is meant to be the closest to a traditional Fire Emblem lord. But even without his Sanity Slippage over the timeskip, some fans think that his heroic traits have setbacks that make him the very opposite of what those traits should make him. Even though his Ax-Crazy mindset for the first half of Part II is supposed to be wrong, many think that it is sloppily done because the cataclyst for it is him believing Edelgard caused the Tragedy of Duscur through small steps that come across as illogical, and that it happened when she was only 13 years old which is something he never thinks twice about until Cornelia drops some hints that leads him off from suspecting Edelgard. And even though he does eventually make attempts to better himself and atone for what he has done, it's seen as him being Easily Forgiven despite how mean he had been to his friends up until that point and that someone close to him such as Rodrigue had to die for it to happen. His overall goals is probably the biggest point against him, which is to keep Fódlan as it was before the war started and make changes in a slow but steady pace to prevent unnecessary sacrifices or upsetting the people, since he thinks the nobility and crests still have values. Many find this to be in incredibly poor taste when so much about the game's story is about showing how the current system has made Fódlan into the Crapsack World it is that brings harm to both nobles and commoners and is the exact thing Edelgard started the war against. And even if Dimitri were to install changes, who's to say they won't just as easily be undone by a future ruler, setting the world back to what it was before the game started? Even if that might happen somewhere down the line in every lords' ending, it is the easiest for Dimitri's reforms to be undone since it was so easy for him to install them, as opposed to the other endings where radical reforms are introduced and therefore is gonna be harder.
Ruderruby added this, Jamesjamm deleted citing "As another troper explained when removing this from the YMMV page, this is misuse as the only truly villainous acts are the Sanity Slippage the entry acknowledges is portrayed as wrong, and since Three Houses runs on Grey And Gray Morality, none of the lords can be said to be designated heroes since they’re antagonists on routes that aren’t theirs", Ruderruby added it back without explanation.
Thoughts on the matter?
resolved Crush The Keepsake Image Removal.
I think some Troper unilaterly removed the image from Crush the Keepsake, without giving a valid reason, simply saying they don't like Toy Story 3.
Did the Troper have permission to do that?
resolved New troper running a plugin that changes Girl to Trans Girl Web Original
~Tom Gut is a new account, and their very first edit today
is to change two instances mentioning "Girl" in the trope to "Trans Girl", making the affected trope links invalid in the process. This seems to be a plugin, as the same edit contains a legitimate entry with no issues.
resolved We need to decide what's a HateSink and what's a CompleteMonster
On the one piece HS page it says in edits that a character cannot have any reedeeming traits to qualify, even though this is the same thing as CM, so we need to change up the tropes.

resolved Regarding Trivia/TheCrow1994 Film
Two queries about Trivia. The Crow 1994
1. The Disowned Adaptation and Development Hell examples look like they belong on Trivia. The Crow 2024 instead. That being said, the former already has a more fleshed out example there. Should the Development Hell example be moved there though?
2. Both Fatal Method Acting and Died During Production are about Brandon Lee's death. Is this redundant or not? I lean to removing Died During Production and keeping Fatal Method Acting but I'm unsure.

Avesayer-of-Igpays has been editing since the 5th, and the only thing they seem to care about is pigs. They made a TLP draft for "A Woman and her Pig
" which is a no-example stub, though their edits are more concerning.
I can't tell if they're a troll or just have a hyper-specific wonk, but this is getting to be a bit much.
