resolved SOLVED - hyperlink problem
I need to hyperlink to the Other Wikia for YMMV.The Dogs of War. Except this is the link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Rwandan_coup_d%27A9tat
I tried:
- as it is
- as d'état
- as détat
- as detat
- as d'etat
I run out of ideas how to make it work. Suggestions? Or an instruction? It's always a struggle with apostrophed links, for obvious formatting reasons. And here it is a double whammy due to also having é in the link.
EDIT FOR SOLUTION
Turns out the most obtuse version works:
- apostrophe has to be URL-coded, as d%27
- any diacritics must be used directly.

Jittery Cabbage 668's sole contributions to the site

resolved Looking for something on TLP
I would have asked this on "Trope Finder"...But I feel like that's only for tropes that have been published.
So...A long time ago...There was a trope that was about how "someone was forlornly looking at someone happy" or something like that. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the trope.
I've gone through 122 pages of TLP and I am unable to find it. does anyone even remember what the official name of it was?
resolved Permission for video
I want to upload a video, but I'm not sure if I have to ask permission from the creator to upload it.
resolved Extensive rewording done of work page description
Yesterday, I reported noncanadianguy here for extensive redlink removal on the My World… and Welcome to It works page and sent them a notifier. The PM response from them was cordial.
Today, they extensively rewrote the work page's description — best as I can tell without any resulting improvement. There was no edit reason included, nothing posted to the discussion page, and no PM from them. They did change the original "cancelled" (usually considered American English) to "canceled" (usually considered more British English), which seems like a violation of "first come, first served" and definitely makes sense to change back. Otherwise, it seems like an unnecessary overhaul.
Was this okay for them to do? If not, am requesting a mod revert of the page.
Edited by BoltDMCresolved New troper edit warring and making massive complain-y edits
A new user, ~amybranch, is making massive edits overwriting other peoples' work
in various Dungeons & Dragons pages that are either on the verge of edit warring (I honestly lost count) but are at the very least highly complaining and often factually inaccurate walls of text.
A few days ago I posted a different ATT about this user
as they were attempting to shoehorn in Crippling Overspecialization in pages where it didn't make sense. Other users seemed to resolve it, but now they're definitively edit warring:
- Amybranch posts the Crippling Overspecialization entries
- I had removed them
with edit reasons explaining why (namely being that they're way too myopic for "crippling" or "overspecialization")
- Amybranch edits them back in
, with an edit reason showing flimsy understanding of the point
- Another user, lycropath, removes the entries
with more fleshed-out reasons with more mechanical context.
- Page was split due to length issues...
- Amybranch came back to not only edit back in the Crippling Overspecialization entries
, but also remove massive chunks of preexisting entries for no explained reason, many of which are heavily complaining and saying "no people don't actually like this character and anyone who does are liars and fake" and being objectively wrong.
They've made many edits in YMMV.Dungeons And Dragons5th Edition that reek of Fan Myopia and complaining, and have further issues of bad formatting (indentation issues), misuing tropes, and pointlessly rewriting other peoples' work to complain more vocally, especially for things that nobody actually dislikes (they really dislike Monks for some reason despite them — anecdotally speaking — being very popular and well-loved at the moment). Can something be done about this?

Do I need to run making a sandbox (for rewriting a page) through someplace, or can I just create it?
resolved Low quality edits - formatting & English
I guess I'll be the rat and I hate to do this (since I share the struggle), but it's just tiresome at this point.
Troper kruczak has zero regard for the English grammar and spelling. For months now, I've been carefully cleaning up his mess whenever I've stumbled into it, especially in works from the Polish Media index (since that's where we are both usually active, for obvious reasons). But after nearly two years of this, I'm absolutely done.
This isn't even that he's making mistakes. It's the scale and level of them, where he can't even be bothered to first check in a preview mode if his entries display properly (or notice there are red links or the formatting is off after posting). So "naturally" stuff like doing the spellcheck or fixing the grammar is off the menu. And it's almost always a one-and-done type of deal, with no attempt to fix things later, revisit or anything like that.
I get it with some of his mistakes. Polish doesn't have articles of any kind, so it's pure abstraction trying to grasp the English ones. But for Christ's sake, we reached the technological point where the browser itself is going to pick up half of the slack by itself, highlighting mistakes, and there are dozens upon dozens of grammar autocorrect tools readily available (guilty as charged for always double-checking with those and I'm still unsure most of the time). There is literally no excuse to keep making the same basic mistakes that a mid-schooler would know better than to make.
So pretty please, do something with this guy, for I'm done being his editor or covering for him.
A sample of his most recent edits, but they are all
like this:
(No, I can't PM here, I'm banned from using PMs, someone else will have to do that)
Edited by Tropiarzresolved Kick-a-thoom
Kick-a-thoom has had problems with grammar and indentation for months, and despite responding to my notifiers, they're still making errors to this day. Not only was this
indentation error made only a couple of hours ago, but they also made a page
with a Flame Bait trope that was poorly-written and had to be cutlisted only a few days ago.
resolved Possible Sayaka sock
Bolbi (edit history
) appears to be another Sayaka sock. They started editing very recently, and both their targeted articles and the uploaded (but pending) videos are showing red flags that hint at this.
resolved The word "Neurodivergent" and Speculative troping
(Note: This query is just about a specific case; I don't intend to extend the question beyond the one example to be quoted below.)
Noble House contains the following example; I highlighted the word "neurodivergence" in the quote to clarify its context.
- * The Apothecary Diaries: [...] The La clan is headed by Grand Commandant Kan Lakan, a powerful but deeply eccentric army strategist who forced his abusive father from power for public corruption. He is assisted by his nephew and adopted son Kan Lahan, a brilliant statistician, and later by Lahan's Brother, a hard-working and knowledgeable farmer. The La clan is considered a wild card in court politics, largely because Lakan and Lahan's neurodivergence makes them completely uninterested in court intrigue despite their high rank. (Rest of the point omitted as unnecessary)
So this is a fantasy fiction that is based on a fantasy version of Imperial China, so the author is (generally) careful to not seep modern medical terminology into the work's Medical Drama content. As a result, none of the La Clan members are given any neurodevelopmental diagnosis in-universe. However, Lakan's face-blindness is medically significant enough (being passed over in inheritance due to not even able to recognize his parents—this is why he practically sent his parents to jail) to give it a Disease by Any Other Name treatment. That said, many readers (me not included) consider the La Clan a line of autistics.
Eccentricity is not speculative. Diagnosed by the Audience is, and it should not appear in factual tropes such as Noble House. But how about "neurodivergence"? In this particular case, should the bolded "neurodivergence" be replaced by "eccentricity" for Speculative Troping?
resolved Troper overly defensive of Fire Emblem Fates and complaining about its detractors?
I have noticed over the past several months Leliel has a tendency to add edits regarding Fire Emblem Fates’ story that use defensive language and veer into Complaining About People Not Liking the Show. Fates admittedly tends to attract complaining edits so I understand where they’re coming from in trying to balance it out, but I can’t help but feel they go too far in the other direction. A repeated pattern is complaining about detractors (either for allegedly not understanding the story enough or supposedly being toxic) as well as misunderstanding the criticisms of Garon being Obviously Evil (they seem to think people are unaware that he was possessed the whole time and believe this fact alone should make it justified. Most detractors are aware of that but still dislike it if the They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character section on Garon is anything to go by. Not to mention Conquest, the route that makes this most explicit, is often criticized for its portrayal of him). Here are examples I found noteworthy:
- This edit back in December
isn’t too bad, but does show their pattern of misunderstanding the criticisms of Garon and complaining about the game’s detractors. Other editors have since deleted or trimmed down most of that content.
- An extremely complain-y “inverted” Sacred Cow entry
back in February (deleted because YMMV cannot be played with).
- Inserting an edit about the fandom being toxic to anyone “who dares gush about the game”
back in March. I deleted it due to finding the wording aggressive.
- Weeks ago adding
a Viewers Are Geniuses entry that uses a lot of intensifiers, complete with the last sentence complaining about other players. It has since been trimmed down.
- Yesterday, they inserted
what I think might be Justifying Edits on the Play the Game, Skip the Story entries. I looked at the Play the Game, Skip the Story entries on other Fire Emblem games’ YMMV and most of them didn’t feel the need to clarify there are fans who like the story out there (mostly since that’s for other entries like Broken Base to cover and by that logic we would also have to clarify not everyone likes the gameplay). Also, the way they say fans of Fates/Conquest’s story can be found specifically on “story-focused” sites is a not-so-subtle way of elevating them above the detractors.
resolved How to handle Croc / Big Tobacco Croc duplicate work pages
Well... I screwed up. I created the page Advertising.Big Tobacco Crocodile and titled it that because that was the closest thing to an official name I could find for this series of ads after searching Google for it.
I put so much work into this page... and then I noticed Advertising.Croc, which is for the same series of ads. 😞
I had no idea that just "Croc" was considered an official title for this series, but after looking at the link on that page, which appears to be an official blog, I guess it is...
I guess these pages will have to be merged, but which one should stay?
Edited by DrNoPumaresolved Arbritary re-ordering of the Character Page? Videogame
Was browsing Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 when I realized something was off, and it came to my attention that the page had been re-ordered so that the Soviets were the faction on top with the Allies below them. This struck me as odd so I checked but there doesn't seem to be any discussion or debate on this, and the editor who did it Yarawi, seemed to have done so
without consulting anyone else.
It should be noted every other Red Alert series character page keeps to the pattern of Allies first, then Soviets.
Not much of an issue at the moment and his other edits don't seem malicious. Still, just noting an unusual situation and its resolution.
Is there any larger policy wrt this stuff?
resolved Troper did a wholesale removal of creator redlinks
Am reporting that noncanadianguy just went through the description for My World… and Welcome to It and removed all the redlinks for the actors and other creators that didn't have pages. As I understand it, that's against TV Tropes policy.
Asking for permission to restore them, as I don't want to be accused of starting an edit war.
Also, what kind of notifier would I send them?
Thanks!
Edited by BoltDMCresolved Question about reporting a pattern in a user's behavior on a forum
If a user has a pattern of rule-breaking or "wrong" behavior on a forum, would it be more efficient and/or proper to holler it the usual way or discuss it here on Ask The Tropers?

Someone has changed My Life as a Teenage Robot to nothing but what should be a commented-out note, and given how the troper has done the edit, fixing it is not as simple as just copy-pasting the text that was there before. Requesting a mod revert if possible.
