openCinemasins Deadpool Film
Can someone please update the entry on Awesome.Deadpool 2016 with the sin tally before and after the bonus round? I'd like to know how exactly it changed, but I don't want to click the video myself.
openThe Roleplay Glowfic page
Glowfic (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Roleplay/Glowfic)
is relatively obscure but really really fun and I want to get the tvtropes page for it up to par - how do I go about finding people who are interested in helping me? (I can explain things about it and stuff and get examples of tropes but am not so good at trying to edit the page itself.)
openIs Brokeback Mountain an example of Gay Cowboy?
The way both the trope itself and film page mention that they are bi and Shephards and not Cowboys seems to read they aren't. Don't know if there's a certain criteria to fit the trope.
Edited by WhirlRXopenEdit War in Characters.OverwatchSupport
YZQ added the following entry to Characters.Overwatch Support under Difficult, but Awesome:
- Another Difficult, but Awesome skill of [Lucio's] is the Sound Barrier. The skill takes a bit longer to activate after initiation as he jumps into the air and slams his weapon down on a surface to generate said barrier, during which he can be killed. Also, the shield itself decays rapidly, an issue when some ultimates can only be absorbed satisfactorily when the shield is at max strength (e.g. RIP-Tire). But, a Lúcio who can grasp the timing well will be able to shield his team from potential wipes.
I deleted it, leaving as an edit reason that while certainly awesome, Lucio's Sound Barrier doesn't take any better timing than any other defensive ult and no mechanical skill to speak of, rendering it not particularly difficult by the standards of the game. YZQ immediately restored it giving no edit reason.
Edited by HighCrateopenStrawmanHasAPoint
Stranrep has re-added an example about Kingdom Come to Strawman Has a Point without comment or discussion.
This example is one that's been heavily edited and deleted multiple times over, presumably because the work itself is actually pretty heavy on Both Sides Have a Point. Neither side is clearly defined as purely right or purely wrong, and the ending heavily argues that Taking a Third Option is the only way for the inherent problems NOT to end in total tragedy.
Edited by KingZealopenCreator.AdamWest - self-demonstrating?
I just noticed that Adam West is written in the first person. I assume the point is to make it self-demonstrating, it's just that I can't really see that it demonstrates anything interesting. I'm not really familiar with Adam West so I can't tell how well it fits his voice, but is there really any point in it being self-demonstrating?
openconcerning the content of "Rape Leads to Insanity"
I've been somewhat concerned for some time about the contents of the trope page Rape Leads to Insanity. Some parts of the description seem to touch on how it is in the real world and then say some things that could be easily misconstrued. For instance, one spot says that it's ultimately the victim's personality rather than the nature of the assault that determines the person's reaction. That's not a far stretch from saying that it's the victim's fault if they're traumatized by rape, especially when you also have entire paragraphs that declare "most" take sexual assault "calmly". Since this was placed right after a note of Truth in Television, it seems that a great deal of care should be taken for both accuracy and sensitivity. It's extremely easy to swing between two extremes here, deliberately or otherwise implying either that trauma is a big enough thing that a visibly stable person probably wasn't really raped, or that it's abnormal to suffer any sort of major breakdown (thus shaming those that do suffer, including a large number that display a good face to hide how much they're hurting). Truth of the matter is, no matter the specific statistics, sexual assault does create a major increase to the risk of numerous trauma-related problems as well as a variety of extremely dangerous methods of self-medication and even suicide, but not a guarantee. Worse, one of the common and more dangerous "coping" mechanisms is basically the Stepford Smiler, putting on a happy face and trying to convince everyone, even themselves, that they're fine when really they're more like a ticking time bomb waiting for the pain to find an out. So information strung along after that Truth in Television label should be carefully worded.
Also, along those lines, is there actual statistical data to demonstrate a significant benefit to the victim when their attacker is caught and dealt with? Beyond the initial matter of said attacker's ability to return of course. I know that many fiction works, particularly law and order type stories, insist that confronting the attacker and making them pay is an important step in the healing process, but I honestly haven't seen any actual studies to back up any real guarantee. Instead, it seems like, similar to other matters, it depends a great deal on both the person and the nature of the trauma: some may be best simply knowing the person won't/can't get to them without ever having to see that face again, while others might not be able to move forward until they've stared their nightmare in the face. The second is more appealing and thus more common in fiction, but is it really also "truth"?
Edited by LyneropenWanda Maximoff's 'redemption arc'? Film
How exactly does Wanda have a redemption arc in the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron when she never acknowledged what she did to her actual <i>victims < /i>? We see her happily Mind Raping all the Avengers, especially Tony Stark. And she doesn't blink when she send the Hulk to an innocent city. First think that she does when she 'joins' to the heroes is warning about one of her victims without mention what she did to him. Then she just joins at the battle because she literally saw that she was going to day and well, maybe she still wanted the planet, you know, to live.
But she immediately is made an Avenger and the shit that she did is never mentioned again. On Captain America: Civil War, she seems remorseful for what happened at Lagos but, what about Johannesburg, she just stepped aside and let Tony and Bruce take the blame?
She seems to be 'remorseful' but not because she is interest in the people's well being, but because they are afraid of them and that changes their perception of her as a victim. The novelization does not mention anything either. So, therefore: she lied to keep her position. When Clint comes to 'rescue her', she doesn't change her mind until he says that she will redeem herself.
Her redemption arc is...? A joke? A gigantic double standard?
open Jana Whitaker in YOLO (internet girls #4) Literature
does she cut or she depressed? (ie. there's a part in yolo that says something like "why would jana post about almost cutting herself?" she gained a lot of weight, and the status updates the winsome threesome report on her, are very upsetting?)
openSelf-Demonstrating Troper page?
Anyone has a clue about what to do with SelfDemonstrating.Doc Scratch?
It vaguely looks like a contributor page, but it's in the SelfDemonstrating/ namespace plus it's almost fully spoilered (and no, I didn't bother read it in full). Note that there exists a Tropers.Doc Scratch page, except it's nearly empty.
So, move the content to the Tropers/ namespace? Or cutlist the whole thing for not following standards?
Edited by StFanopenLiterature/Survivors, Too Dumb To Live Example Literature
On Literature/Survivors, there is this example of Too Dumb to Live:
"The other dogs, from Lucky's point of view (and probably the readers' as well). Individual dogs' antics include going back into a house they just established was filled with carbon monoxide (especially since it had caused the one dog to become unconscious and they had just rescued her), swimming too far out in the river after Lucky had just warned them about it being deep and fast, and one dog trying to put a collar back on after he'd gotten it caught on a bush and nearly choked himself to death."
Now, there are... problems with this example. One, in the book proper, the Leashed Dogs (pet dogs) agree to hold on to one memento as a reminder of their longpaws. (human owners) Of course, this means returning to the houses to get them. Daisy, the one who lived in the house that now has a gas leak, holds her breath as she goes in, knowing the second time around that she shouldn't inhale the toxins. Two, while I don't recall enough to talk about the example with the river, I do know that in a later book, Lucky is actually grateful that the Leashed Dogs kept their collars on, as it saved one dog's (Mickey's, who was the one who almost choked to death in the first place) life.
So, what should we do about this example? In fact, the page could use a little cleaning up, with the series still having new entries being written.
openNo religion in historical fantasy
So I've been watching Merlin the BBC show, and I've been enjoying it but I've had one major issue. Their is no Christianity, which is really weird given the setting. It's set in a post Roman but pre Saxon Britian. Uther Pendragon, The King of Camelot is committed to stamping out magic and The Old Religion. Now an Old Religion implies a new religion, but this new religion is never mentioned. Pendragon's anti magic crusade is a purely personal thing, he has no larger ideological justification of any kind.
Now, it's obvious what that that new religion should be. Christianity, a faith that did cleanse older pagan faiths from the British isles. But it never appears, not a priest not even a cross in the background. It's kind of annoying.
This isn't the first semi historical thing that does this, some versions of Marvel Comics have Captain America fight Hydra and never even mention Hitler. So my question, is their a name for this kind of thing? When semi historical fiction air brushes out whole parts of the history it nominally bases itself on?
openAbout tropers who make pages of their own fanfics/roleplays?
What is the general opinion on such Tropers?
On the one hand, I myself have taken an interest in a lot of videogames and movies I wouldn't have given a second glance because of TV Tropes and find it justifiable on the grounds that it would give it more exposure to the Troper's works.
On the other hand, it seems like the sort of thing that a very annoying person would do.
So, thoughts?
EDIT:
Conclusion:
1. The Troper's intention must not be to advertise his work.
2. The Troper must not point out the reactions of the audience.
3. The Troper must not act like a self-aggrandizing twat that praises his work's quality.
4. If there is criticism to be had, the Troper has no right to censor it. And if he ends up hating his work and wants the page gone, then too bad. It's here forever.
Opinions however, are either: "You can do that, but it's best others put it here" Or: "Eh, sure. Knock yourself out, just follow the rules"

spoilered out a trope name on Mr Selfridge, spoilered it out again when mlsmithca corrected it (with edit reason), and has kept the page perpetually locked since. I sent a spoiler warning, but the locking concerns me. And it's still a no-context example.
openNo Title
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WMG/KorraKorraHerself
And I quote...
"We'll see seeing a lot of closeups of Korra's feet
And why not? Maybe at some point, she'll forgo any foot wear. Which makes it even easier to earthbend. She'll even remain barefoot in her Southern Tribe home.
Happened in the season 3 finale. Korra's boots, along with her armbands and ponytail braid were taken from her. so that the skin on her limbs would be exposed to a liquid-metallic poison that enters the bloodstream through the flesh, effectively leaving her barefooted. Her feet get closeups during her fight with Zaheer and when she projects fire jets, along with several fluid shots as she fights."
(shudders) I though that Fetish Fuel crud wasn't allowed? Ew.
Edited by TheLemsterPjuopenHow Long Should I Wait to Avoid an Edit War?
A troper named Schonberg made an edit on Characters. One Piece Major Allies changing the names of two characters from their official English translations to their Japanese names. This has happened a couple times already so, due to the Edit War potential, I've held off on reverting. I've sent the troper a PM regarding the change and addressing the points made in his edit reason, also posting those rebuttals in the page's discussion (which I started preemptively hoping to avoid this situation), while also linking to said discussion and a Style Rules thread being worked on in the forums sparked by the last time this came up.
Been a couple days with no response. Not a problem in itself, just me being impatient. My concern, looking at the Schonberg's edit history
, are twofold. One it looks like he's active on roughly a monthly basis, so I'm not sure if my pm will get a response if that pattern holds. Two, he's made such edits before involving these characters, so if I revert, the edit war potential is high and I don't want to get caught up in it and more than I can help.
My current plan is to wait until at least Friday or Saturday (about five days from the initial pm). If there's no response by then, will I be okay reverting the page back to the English names without being one half of an Edit War? Or should I report here as I am doing and leave the reversion to someone like a mod?
openSource of Neologism quote
Does anyone know where the Fast Eddie quote on Neologism comes from? It sounds like the conversation it took place in was absolutely hilarious, so I'd like to see the rest of it for myself.
openEditor with major grammar and formatting problems
sssstariiii
has... many problems. S/he mostly only edits Roleplay.Super Smash Brothers Life Itself and its subpages, but the pages themselves are a mess. Serious issues with capitalisation and punctuation (I've never seen so many incorrectly used apostrophes in one place), incorrect alphabetisation, incorrect indentation, Zero Context Examples galore... and absolutely no clue how to format potholes correctly (s/he uses the entire URL, even if said entire URL is a redirect). The limited crosswicking s/he has done to trope pages suffers from similar problems.
openRegarding Amazing Agent Luna
Shall I remove all spoiler tags for Amazing Agent Luna? Because while adding some stuff to that page, I realized that it would be very tough, if not impossible, to follow proper spoiler procedure considering the amount of potential potholing that might need to be done at certain points that can't be done under spoiler tags, and so I thought to myself, "Screw it, let's just do what we did with Frozen's character page and get rid of all the spoiler markup." But at the same time, I didn't feel I should just remove all spoiler tags without prior permission, so... here I am.

I was wondering if there is a trope for a joke or reference that doesnt make much sense until alot later. I was looking at the Mallrats page in the Funny section. The original troper (and myself) didnt understand, or even hear, the Junior Masters and Johnson reference by TS. Now thanks to the tv show Masters of Sex - its easy to understand that TS was referencing the Masters and Johnson research team. So another way to ask the question - I have a friend who saw Spaceballs before she saw Empire Strikes back. Once she sees Empire - hopefully, more jokes will make sense. Is there a trope name for that?
