openPossible example Web Original
(Sorry for making so much ATT threads regarding entries i’m just kinda nervous about my contributions and I want to make sure they’re right-)
So I want to add an example for Self-Destruct Mechanism from a You Tube series I’m into, and I just want to make sure it’s a-okay before adding it.
The Final Minutes - Zombie Plague: The Path’s compound locations are fitted with a Magno Loop, an underground ring that acts as the compounds’ defense system. It’s also fitted with Complete Destruction mode, which causes the loop to cycle through all of its defense modes before detonating and vaporizing anything in a 25 kilometer radius.
Here’s the part that the info comes from
, the self destruct mode gets more detail at the 37:13 mark.
openAccidental deletion of examples off Trope Page -- need advice
Hi everyone.
Got a PM a couple hours ago from a Troper, who said a Tropes page ("Vomit Discretion Shot") that I had added an example to had apparently gotten half its examples deleted. They asked why I did this for no reason.
I wasn't aware of it then, but I'm pretty sure this happened around the time I started having very slow saving updates, either via connectivity at my end or a problem with the site (not sure which). One of the pages (I think it was this one) froze when I tried to save it, then finally went through with the last folder presenting itself as not complete. I added [[/folder]] at the bottom and saved, which created a normal folder. My guess is the deletion happened then, but I can't say for sure.
I replied to the PM, explained what had happened, and asked if I should do anything to try and correct the problem or not. Haven't heard back yet. This potentially being a big problem, I figured I should wait a couple hours for a reply, then follow up in timely fashion if I didn't hear back.
I've only been active here for a couple weeks, and you folks may understandably not want me trying to fix the issue. Could someone let me know how to proceed? I'll be happy to try and fix it myself, but want someone's okay before I do so.
Sorry about this happening.
Thanks!
openShould there be a Complete Angel trope?
This trope would be the exact opposite of Complete Monsters. A Complete Angel is a character that is very pure of heart. They've committed selfless acts, they are forgiving, incorruptible, and overall extremely nice. I'm pretty sure theres a lot of characters who would fit the Complete Angel trope.
openLine of opinion acceptability in YMMV
Currently in a bit of a looming trope off with another involving the YMMV page for a fanfic.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/PokemonShadowOfTime
There are two people troping on it, myself and another, and I want to add this trope to YMMV
- Fight Scene Failure: There are many things the fic does that Reset and Ashes do as well. Some of them Shadow of Time does better. Fight scenes...are not one of them. The fights in general are a lot shorter and less descriptive than the fight scenes in either fic.
The other is very much not for it. This is his comment on the matter
'Fight Scene Failure' is purely a matter of opinion, so I don't think it applies here; at least They Copied It acknowledges that only some have that view.
...I asked a mod and I was told to bring it up here. So...here I am.
openHilarious In Hindsight on the Megamind page, misuse or not? Film
I've noticed that keyblade333 recently deleted the entirety of the Hilarious in Hindsight entry from the Megamind page.
After I talked to them about it, they claimed that it was because of misuse.
I think they're a mixed bag. Things like Jonah Hill's and Will Ferrell's roles in The Lego Movie count, given that Jonah Hill was voicing a character who was heavily inspired by Jimmy Olsen, with the names of two Green Lanterns, only to later voice Green Lantern himself who has an obsession with Superman. Same thing with both Will Ferrell characters having a tendency to mispronounce things and also being parodies of over-the-top supervillains.
Some of the entries really were borderline examples, but that's no reason to delete the entire entry.
Edited by tropineasilyopenWhen should I split off a sub-page to a trope?
When should I split off a sub-page to a trope?
I have at least 25 to add from one author, to One-Word Title....
Should I give that author their own page, or just split off the Fanfic section?
But really, if a work has 50 examples, it should just get its own sub-page all to itself...
This
planned Underground Monkey entry, that is already taking up 12 lines, and I'm not done. Although, at best, it should... Oh, I missed some...
Note to Self: Trees, Mushrooms, (Bats?)
It might be 30 lines long...
Edited by MaladyopenWasted plots and characters Film
So, I found these entries in the YMMV page for Wonder Woman (2017).
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
- In the backstory the Greek Gods (especially Diana's patron goddess Athena) are all dead save for Ares, who by his own admission destroyed them. A common complaint among Wonder Woman fans is that while she is an excellent character herself, her stories generally don't have the same density of Worldbuilding and Rogues Gallery that Batman and Superman have, and that DC rarely does heavy lifting in integrating the richness of Classical Mythology to its superhero lore the way Marvel does with Norse Mythology, and that arbitrarily wiping out the Pantheon, for the sake of simplifying Diana's origin, potentially limited the scope of her stories going forward.
- Some viewers were disappointed more wasn't done with Dr. Poison. For starters, she's a female scientist during World War 1, a period of time where someone such as herself would be looked out with confusion or disdain from her allies. One youtuber
discussed this by pointing out how she acts as the perfect Foil to Diana: Diana had the ability to choose her destiny, while Dr. Poison essentially didn't, but the choice was made to make her a straight up villain in the end and not a Tragic Villain. Others think it may have been more interesting if she was Ares.
- The choice to kill off Ares. Not only is he Wonder Woman's most powerful and iconic villain, but he has so much backstory and potential that lends him to being one of the biggest villains in the DCU. He easily could have been a villain the Justice League could have had to face, and with how small Wonder Woman's Rogues Gallery is, he makes for a good long term villain. Instead he gets killed shortly after appearing, which calls into question now what they can do with Wonder Woman since her first solo-film has her beating a literal God of War.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Quite a few people considered it a wasted opportunity that the movie did not stick to the idea that Ares was not behind the war and that the people fighting in it were fighting purely because they wanted to, particularly since it would have provided a great reason for Diana to seclude herself from humanity. This is especially strange given that up until that point in the movie, Diana's entire character arc was about learning how humans are both capable of evil and good, but the choice for Ares to appear throws all of it under the bus. Its such a sore spot for people that many feel it damages the films quality.
Do they really qualify for these tropes or not? I'm asking because sometimes, the inclusion of these tropes in YMMV pages are less "This plot/character wasn't properly developed or explored" and more "I didn't like the way this plot/character was handled."
openIs it better to move this example to Harsher in hindsight? Live Action TV
On Kitchen Nightmares S6 E15 "Amy's Baking Company" there is this entry:
- Epileptic Trees: Some netizens took Samy's obsessive control over the till, his pocketing of servers' tips, and his admonishing Gordon that "You're not the gangster here, I'm the gangster!" as signs that the restaurant was actually a money-laundering front for The Mafia, which would just raise even more questions.
- According to law enforcement sources, Samy was involved in drugs and extortion while in Europe, so it's not far off the mark.
- Which is questionable itself. If you were running a covert criminal operation, would you want these loud, incompetent assholes anywhere near it? Additionally, if the restaurant were involved in any criminal activity, the last thing they should ever, ever do is involve Gordon Ramsay and be on a show that is seen on national television.
- According to law enforcement sources, Samy was involved in drugs and extortion while in Europe, so it's not far off the mark.
The indentation and the natter have to be corrected of course, but doesn't it make more sense to move it to Harsher in Hindsight? I was thinking of removing the final entry, which is mere natter, and merge the first two together.
Edited by gc10openVandalism in WhatCouldHaveBeen/Sports
Trooper Triple TV 95 has been removing the player names from the basketball section of What Could Have Been/Sports. I reverted the edits the last two times myself and warned him he'd be reported if it happened again.
He claimed to have no idea what I was talking about.
He did it again, today. No reasoning or explanation.
Edited by WillbyropenEdit War on Characters/FireEmblemThreeHousesEdelgard
Edit page history link
for Fire Emblem: Three Houses – Edelgard.
RedHunter543
deleted the Dark Messiah entry on Edelgard's character page for the following reason: "Edelgard does not fit the criteria to be a dark messiah."
Mei-may
restored the entry for the following reason: "Didn't cite which criteria she lacks to be not be this trope. And a DM is a villain with savior-delusions, has a utopian vision of peace and prospect, knight templar tendencies, has pet the dog moments but ruthless enough to sacrifice the dog, has loyal followers and generally acts/has good intentions, etc. Which all fit Edelgard."
Redhunter 543 deleted the entry again, making this into an Edit War for the following reason: "Edelgard does not present herself to be a holy savior to be a Dark Messiah, she's more knight templar than this trope. Additionally, she does not inspire fanatism in people aside from Hubert. The rest of the Eagles can turn on her for example"
I read the page for Dark Messiah and agree with Mei-may that Edelgard qualifies, but more voices should be heard to determine if Edelgard is indeed a DM.
openAbsentee Actor question
Question about Absentee Actor, which is about unexplained character absences. If Word of God or supplementary material explains the absence, is it still Absentee Actor if it's not explained in the work itself? What about explanations released after the fact?
openSpoiler Image on character page
So I was checking on Lucifer (2016) charater page and then I found one image for a character named God. It shows his appearance in mid season 5 finale and I accidentally spoiled myself .And the troper put in the picture is named G3ae. So I decided to label note an image ( Link here: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Characters.Lucifer2016#edit26846822
) but I was thinking if I should deleted the picture or just keep it label note.
openNot Insane Troll Logic?
The examples in the entry from EFAP seem a bit too tame to me:
- Insane Troll Logic: A lot of people they cover use this, to which those on the podcast end up having to make sense of and respond to. Some examples include Jim Sterling saying that "there's noting about Joel that ain't loathsome" while showing the scene from Part II where Joel's taking Ellie to a museum at great risk to his own safety just so she can have fun, Browntable saying that "Just because the film isn't as good as The Dark Knight doesn't mean we should brush it aside as an inferior sequel" despite the fact that those two statements contradict one another, and Just Write saying that the reason the newer, less efficient bombers were used in The Last Jedi is because "most people don't know what a Y-wing is" despite the fact that there are Y-wings in the film released just before The Last Jedi.
Even just taking those at face value that they're accurate, they seem like sorta sloppy arguments at worst, and not up to the level the trope describes.
openDoes Solas from Dragon Age: Inquisition count as a Greater Scope villain for the first 2 games? Videogame
For Elven characters, the evil god Fen'Harel is considered the evil god of their religion and culture, and part of the reason they suffer in the present, as they are a slave race to humans. But in Dragon Age: Inquisition, in the DLC Tresspasser, we learn that one of our companions, a mysterious elf named Solas, is really Fen'Harel himself, and that the gods of the Elves are mages so powerful, it might be safe to call them gods. We also learn that the only reason he sided with us, was to get the Eluvians so that he could use them to destroy modern Thedes and bring back a civilization he destroyed when he rebelled against his fellow mages. Solas claims he rebelled for a good cause, but in the end, he caused more harm then help as he separated Thedes from the Fade, robbing the Elves of their power, killing thousands of his own people, many of them innocents, and being the cause of the plights of the modern elves that we see in all three games. Does this qualigy him as a Greater Scope Villain? I say yes. What about you?
openCommon Knowledge and Misaimed Fandom examples?
I was thinking about adding the following tropes, but have doubts about their validity so I'm running them by here first.
YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 2 E 25 A Canterlot Wedding Part 1
- Common Knowledge: Many criticize Twilight's friends, Shining Armor and Celestia for ignoring Twilight's warnings of Cadance being evil, especially while Canterlot was under threat. They did hear out her warning but Cadance had an alibi or rational for all the accusations Twilight made. Shining Armor stated they didn't know who was threatening Canterlot and changelings were so unknown "Part 2" had to explain what they were to the characters, meaning there was no reason to assume Cadance's behavior was suspicious or connected. They're also accused of disowning Twilight when Shining merely told her not to attend the wedding due to her behavior, everyones walking out on Twilight was to go after the "distraught" Cadance who'd ran off and seemingly needed them more at the time.
- Misaimed Fandom: Given all the Accusation Fics calling everyone out for dismissing Twilight's warning's, one might assume she was meant to be 100% in the right for her actions. In the episode proper she's portrayed a making at least as many bad decisionsexamples Everyone's Aesop Amnesia about taking your friends worries seriously, Twilight also forgot the far more recent not to make conclusions without proof. Everyone being quick to condemn Twilight, Twilight was just a quick to condemn Cadance never conserving she might not be herself. Everyone ignoring the threat to Canterlot, Twilight also did never considering it might be connected. and was only "right" due to exceptional circumstance, hence "Part 2" putting equal emphasis on Twilight admitting she was fooled to as everyone apologizing for doubting her. There’s many fans who wanted Twilight to blow up on everyone and call them out for dismissing her despite her doing so this episode being shown as what caused them to dismiss her.
Previous Common Knowledge cleanup left me the impression it’s only for misconceptions that arise from those who didn’t watch the actual source material. This may be given the prevalence in the fanon that can be confused with canon, or is it not common enough if the incident is unknown outside the fandom? Is this unknown outside fandom? Fan Myopia seems a problem for this trope.
Does Misaimed Fandom apply for situations where both sides were equally wrong? Or does that imply a level of writing nuance that the episode lacked?
I can put these points under Fourth Wall Myopia if nothing else. Any other tropes these may fit better?
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenAnalysis discussion?
Is there a thread somewhere for odd Analysis pages? The one for Space Fighter has one entry (A12) that seems out of place and several points that read like the page is arguing with itself, but I'm not familiar enough with the subject to know what to change.

Wild Teen Party (the self demonstrating one) doesn't seem to be particularly different from Wild Teen Party. Is there any particular reason why it's considered one?
