openQuestionable YMMV entry
Found this under Watch It for the Meme on Poltergeist
- The Simpsons parodied the clown with Krusty and Bart in a Treehouse of Horror. It can be something of a surprise in itself to find out that the clown itself is not a larger part of the story and in fact is just one scare that occurs very close to the end. The Simpsons also included a number of shout-outs in the first ever Halloween short, including a house built on a burial ground, a vortex to another dimension in the wall (which becomes irritated when Bart keeps throwing garbage into it) and finally the house imploding, though this is Played for Laughs, as the house would rather be destroyed than live with The Simpsons.
This really seems like misuse. It doesn't mention the film's actual memes, like "Theeey're heeeere!" and just focuses on a single parody, which was mostly a parody of The Amityville Horror (1979), not just Poltergeist. And I'm pretty sure The Simpsons have never parodied the Poltergeist clown doll (Clown Without Pity is specifically based on Living Doll with elements of Childs Play). And Bart doesn't throw anything in the vortex, in fact he's not even in that scene.

Trivia.Girl Genius contains info about "The Secret Blueprints". While I take these are some sort of Bonus Material, I know for sure there are a few problems with it.
- It takes 92% of the page with a 46k symbols on something not tropes or production info, and nobody touched it since 2012. It goes into excessive details describing the contents of each book, which sounds more like Recap than trivia.
- It says "also available on Girl Genius Wiki". As far as I can tell
, that was never true, unless there was another wiki.
- Some choice words and second person writing makes me wonder if it's plagiarized, which I can't confirm myself.
Any suggestions what to do here?
Edited by Amonimusopen 12-Episode Anime: still tropeworthy? Anime
Iāve been concerned about 12-Episode Anime for a while now. There are two major issues that caught my attention.
First, Iām wondering whether itās still tropeworthy in the first place. I suspect this is a very old page, especially since the description mentions the Spring and Fall anime seasons being much more important than Summer and Winter, which was once true but hasnāt really been the case for ~15 years now. There was a time when most new TV anime that werenāt open-ended serials had a standard length of 24-26 episodes, and 12 episode anime in that era were something of a novelty. But things have changed especially over the last decade or so, to the point where almost all new TV anime are being made 12 episodes at a time now, even the ones that are renewed for multiple seasons. So a 12-episode anime in the 2020s is effectively PSOC, nothing notable at all because itās evolved into the industry standard. If anyone cared enough to add every new 12 episode series that premiered every season weād be adding over 100 new anime to the page every year.
Second, even if everyone decides the concept itself is still a valid trope, the vast majority of the examples on the page are ZCE, and most of the examples that do have a description are in the āGiven More Seasonsā and āUnusual Casesā folders, which are essentially the aversions.
open ThatOneBoss and Definition. Videogame
Earlier today, I had removed the below entries on the That One Boss page for Elden Ring.
I removed them for the following reasons:
- First entry is a Wake-Up Call Boss.
- Second boss is a Bonus Boss as part of an optional sidequest, and the entry basically reads as "boss is hard cause it can summon adds. Oh and it hurts a bit", both of which don't stick out as That One Boss material.
- The last two entries are part of the Final Boss, which That One Boss page says don't qualify. I have put spoiler tags over them to be safe. The flavor text above them also isn't really a valid justification to say they are harder then any other past games boss ether.
Currently these are under discussion on the Discussion tab but I wanted opinions from those outside of that, since I don't want to seem too much like I am saying "RULE SAYS THIS" when I could be taking it too literal.
- Margit, the Fell Omen is likely the first major story boss the player will face, as he guards the main route into Stormveil Castle, and he's very tough for how early he can be fought, notorious for giving players a serious wake-up call possibly within the first few hours of their playthrough. His moveset is quite varied, between quick strikes that come when you think he's open and delayed smashes that punish players who panic-roll, and he strings them in combos that in other FromSoftware games would only appear much later. Thankfully, there is a special item that can be bought from the Twin Husk/Patches whose only purpose is to bind Margit for a few seconds so to allow the player some free hits. You can also bypass Margit and Stormveil Castle entirely, but ignoring it will lock you out of certain quests, plus Margit drops a Talisman Pouch when defeated, so ideally you need to come back to him at a later point if this route is chosen.
- Commander Niall fought at the top of Castle Sol starts the battle summoning two spectral Banished Knights to the fight - one with a shield, another with two swords. You've faced those spectral knights on the way up, and alone they're already quite a handful due to the amount of punishment they can take and deal. Niall himself is no slouch either, boasting deadly attacks with a large reach. Take out the Knights and he Turns Red, imbuing himself with lightning and gaining powerful stomps that can cover a large portion of the arena. It will take a fair bit of effort (or some cheese on your part) to take him out and recover the other half of the Haligtree Medallion.
- The final challenge of Elden Ring has you fighting two bosses back to back, and even by the Final Boss standards of most Soulsborne titles, these two are ridiculously powerful and will likely take you several dozen attempts on your first playthrough:
- First up is the almighty Radagon of the Golden Order. Brandishing the hammer that shattered the Elden Ring and that might yet repair it, he is immune to bleed buildup and heavily resistant to holy damage, putting faith and many dexterity or arcane builds at a lofty disadvantage out of the gate. He's ridiculously aggressive and effective, both in close range with his brutal hammer swings and light shockwaves and at a distance with his lightning spears that chunk you for massive damage if you don't roll out of the way or have resistance to holy damage yourself, alongside quick 'fan' lightning shots that he can throw out at a moment's notice. What really makes him frustrating is that once he powers up at about two-thirds of his health gone, alongside the aforementioned AOE ground stomps, he also gains a nasty Teleport Spam habit, sometimes teleporting right on top of you in the middle of your swing, damaging you, pushing you away and following it up with even more nasty melee strikes. Some of his melee attacks can be parried, and he's susceptible to other ailments such as frost buildup, but if you can't get the timing down you're in for a rough round one.
- After defeating Radagon, you have one last opponent to face - the Elden Beast, who is particularly annoying since it not only has a number of difficult-to-avoid attacks, but it just doesn't stay still. The Elden Beast is constantly on the move, sinking into the ground where it is impossible to hit and then relocating to the other side of the massive boss arena. The player has to chase it on foot, and by the time they've reached the Beast they've barely got enough stamina for an extra attack before it starts moving again. While you're in melee range its size and attack animations don't play nice with the lock-on camera, disorienting you when you are about to strike. All the constant chasing can turn what should have been an epic final confrontation into an unbearable slog, especially when you realize it's immune to all status ailments that would otherwise help shorten the fight. As for some of the aforementioned highly-damaging, difficult-to-dodge attacks, one amounts to a platforming challenge where summoned rings have to be jumped over to avoid a large holy explosion, but the most chaotic moment comes when the Elden Beast conjures a miniature sun that shoots out a constant stream of stars as it chases the player. Not only does it last a long time, but it also continues to track you as the Elden Beast attacks independently of its movements, forcing you to choose between constantly getting hit by the stars while avoiding the boss's attacks, or avoiding the stars while getting wrecked by whatever moves the Elden Beast has decided to do in the interim. And yes, as mentioned before, you have to fight both Radagon and the Elden Beast in one go, with no flask refills in-between. If there was ever a game that made you Earn Your Happy Ending, it's Elden Ring.

open ProtagonistCenteredMorality image misused?
This was unilaterally added as the page image to Protagonist-Centered Morality.
I believe this the image it misuse as PCM is not just heroes doing something morally objectionable, but doing the same thing the hero treated as morally objectionable in others. This image is only half of the requirements for this trope then.
I want to make sure my above understanding of PCM is accurate before taking to Image Pickin'. I also heard PCM is due for TRS so should it wait for that?
Also, my impression is Moral Myopia is PCM expect they are portrayed as wrong for the self serving double standard. That valid?
openKirby GodNeverSaidThat Trivia
i want to bring this to here just so it doesn't escalate into an edit war and because i've had conflicting thoughts about this situation. basically, on the Trivia.Kirby page, there was a God Never Said That entry that read like this:
- After current director Shinya Kumazaki responded to general questions about plot elements in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena on the Miiverse Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon, much of the fanbase instantly took his vague comments to their logical extreme across almost every sub-game, which resulted in a Broken Base. A common misinterpretation in the aftermath is "Galacta Knight's existence is non-canon," despite the fact that Kumazaki went out of his way to say quite the opposite.note It doesn't help that the Ask-a-thon itself seems to have a loose English translation; for example, the phrase "like a "what if" scenario" was actually "parallel story" in the original Japanese text.
this rubbed me the wrong way because the edit feels very opinionated and biased toward one interpretation of the statement that likely isn't the intent:
in other words, what's being said here is that Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena are non-canon For Want Of A Nail / What If? scenarios (they can't be canon, because they would require hitting the Reset Button on the canon ending of the game to bring back characters who are dead). even with the "loose translation" this is clear in the japanese version as well, and most of the japanese fanbase agrees with this. the "parallel stories / two sides of the same story" isn't supposed to be Another Side, Another Story, since the locations and fates of the characters are all accounted for, but rather two different takes on the same scenario where things play out uniquely in each
the intended "main" point here is supposed to be "God Never Said That galacta knight is non-canon" but the entry goes on a complete tangent to talk about how people who think all the other extra games are non-canon have the "wrong" opinion even though it's never been denied and is a pretty logical conclusion to come to. the mention of Broken Base outside of YMMV in particular strikes me as overly-hostile. with that in mind i tried to rewrite the entry to be more neutral while retaining the same basic information:
- Though the Kirby: Planet Robobot Miiverse Ask-a-thon
confirmed that — at least for that game — extra games like Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena are "what-if" scenarios, they don't necessarily say elements within them are non-canon (i.e. Galacta Knight's existence), which some fans initially thought to be the case.
a little while later, an interview came out where it's revealed that Kirby has a Loose Canon, and that though basic plot elements are carried over between games, the exact events of the games can be loosely interpreted if the story calls for it
when this interview came out, Tropers.Miss Conception reverted my edit back to the original with an added note about the loose canon and the comment "Too soon, aged poorly," even though nothing about that statement contradicts my edit. it's consistent, in fact; these extra modes are alternate scenarios that are not fully canon because the overall plot of the kirby series is as flexible as the creators need it to be, and these events don't necessarily need to canonically happen to exist within the universe. their comment really rubbed me the wrong way, too, as it felt very snarky to me.
with that in mind i reverted that entry again, not intending to start an edit war but just because i figured it was the same information in a more neutral manner. i added the information from the new interview as well, since it helps support the point that's being made:
- Though the Kirby: Planet Robobot Miiverse Ask-a-thon
confirmed that — at least for that game — extra games like Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena are "what-if" scenarios, it doesn't necessarily mean elements within them are non-canon (i.e. Galacta Knight's existence), which some fans initially thought to be the case. Shinya Kumazaki later clarified in a Kirby and the Forgotten Land interview
that the Kirby series itself essentially operates on a Loose Canon; the games are generally canon to each other in terms of basic plot points and character development, but the specifics are negligible to avoid restraining future plot ideas too much.
i guess my basic thought is, is my edit okay in terms of conveying the same information and agreeing with the other editor while being more neutral in tone? or was the old edit really better and i simply read it wrong? i don't want to cause a conflict or anything, so i wanted to get some further opinions
Edited by NoUsernameopenKaguya-sama Love Is War Franchise Original Sin. Just A Question? Anime
I like to know the reason why are the "fans" are so upset about something like this?
Franchise Original Sin: Kaguya and Shirogane having sex, played entirely for laughs was the last straw for many fans who were unhappy with the humor of the series gradually getting lewder, that the author had gone back on his word of the series not needing Fanservice to instead chase the lowest common denominator. Actually, the early series was hardly 100% clean and wholesomeāfor instance, a fan favorite gag from the first few chapters revolves around Kaguya struggling not to laugh whenever she hears a word she mistakes to mean "penis"ābut in those early jokes the sexual content were framing devices for the actual jokes, based more on character personality: in that case, the actual punchline was seeing the normally stoic Kaguya degenerating into giggling fits about something that really shouldn't be so funny to anyone above elementary school-age. Later jokes dismiss with that and just have the sex itself be the jokeāan early foreshadowing to the Kaguya/Shirogane joke that pissed the fanbase off can be found in the Running Gag concerning Tsubasa and Nagisa's relationshipnote specifically, that they're always barely able to avoid being caught having sex in public.
If anything, be feeling honest, there's absolutely nothing wrong about them having sex even if its played for humor. Please give me a proper explanation?
Edited by Droid098openShould we be encouraging Video Overdosing?
I often browse the new video examples page, and often the recurring works I see just seem like Entry Pimping uploaders' favorite works rather than actually trying to illustrate a trope. And when I found out about JustForFun.Video Overdosed, I thought to myself, "...that explains an awful lot."
I won't pretend I'm innocent of this myself, after all we generally can only give examples of what we know and are interested in, right? But sometimes it just feels like people are trying to race to see whose fandom can get the most videos uploaded.
openMabinogi Fan Preferred Couple
There was some conversation in text with Fan-Preferred Couple in Mabinogi, so I trimmed it down. However FPC requires canon love interests, and I am unfamiliar with the work and unsure if the trope even applies.
- Fan-Preferred Couple:
- TarlachXKristell have pretty much expressed their feelings for each other, but certain circumstances got in the way. [[spoiler:Like having to turn yourself into a bear and sealing yourself off in a cold and isolated place because you weren't able to control your mana during the day to allow yourself to ''live''.]
- NaoXMorrighan seems to be the absolutely One True Pairing of Mabinogi. Nao is Morrighan's handmaiden (similar with Jenna to Neamhain), a compensation as it were, to make up for Nao dying in Morrighan's service and because she needed someone to act as a gate keeper for the soul-stream.
If someone familiar with Mabinogi can chime in, thank you.

openOne Hit Wonder - for albums as well as songs? Music
supernintendo128 added an example to One Hit Wonder.Rock Music about an artist only known for one album. That term, and the page itself, traditionally refers to artists known for one song, not an album. The article itself describes songs not albums, most references I can find about the term describe songs not albums too. The term for an artist known for only one album seems to be "One Album Wonder". A One Album Wonder is a very different thing from a One Hit Wonder for songs: A "one album wonder" might have multiple hit songs from one album but then never have any others (Hootie & the Blowfish or Lauryn Hill, for instance) and none of those artists are listed on the One Hit Wonder pages.
I removed the example because it seemed to me to be a misuse of the trope and its long-held definition, but now I'm wondering if "One Album Wonder" or something to that effect could be its own trope or own subsection.
What do you all think should be done? Was this Remo Drive example about an album a misuse of the trope, or should One Album Wonder acts be listed in a new subpage? At the very least, I think listing album examples alongside the song examples could become very confusing very fast.
Edited by thelivingtoadopen"Meta" Take A Third Option Literature
Not even sure where such questions belongs, so asking here. Let's start with a backstory, cause I likely wouldn't be able to explain properly without it.
Two writers, both writing about the same topic (let's call them Alice and Bob for now) were arguing about one element of Alice-created world, which Alice considered "unavoidable evil", and Bob considered, basically, Moral Event Horizon.
They chose to dispute it by writing a short story (a non-canon crossover between their worlds), with each side taking turns and writing their parts from their characters' point of view, and defending their position. They never came to an agreement and... let's just say, those two are no longer friends.
But some time later, another author (let's call him Charlie) came to Alice and offered to write another short story, where that issue finally was resolved... by Taking a Third Option to the original conflict. Even "Alice" himself calls it such on his site (where he hosts all his works).
And here comes the issue. As far as I understand, "meta" examples aren't allowed at all? But in that case, what other way it may be mentioned? Aforementioned conflict and finding an alternate solution to it is the entire reason why the short story was written in the first place, but they don't share continuity.
openCan't find my work page in the search engine Literature
Hi! I just posted a new work page (see link below). Yet when I type "That Irresistible Poison" into the search engine, I see a lot of pages unrelated to the book. openOverly long entry Film
The YMMV page for Black Panther has a very long entry for Draco in Leather Pants:
- Thanks to his sympathetic backstory as well as the fact he makes a few good points about social and political issues, Killmonger has a few zealous fans who tend to completely overlook the fact that he's still a remorseless killer who has no qualms about innocent people (even children) dying for the sake of his goals. Sterling K. Brown even spoke out
about it, pointing out that while his intentions were noble, he committed several unambiguously evil acts including murdering his girlfriend, killing Zuri, and destroying the heart-shaped herb so he could keep the Black Panther powers for himself. Hell, his very first scene in the movie has him mocking a totally innocent tour guide for drinking poisoned coffee, just because her understanding of African history is based on Western academic beliefs (even though she's likely just repeating what she's been taught, and is actually being quite nice to him.) Marvel Studios themselves seem to have realized they made the character too sympathetic as the character's next appearance in the ''What If?'' series serves as a further indictment of the character by dismantling whatever justifications he has for his actions, demonstrating how flawed his plan is, and showing he cares more about himself than other black people.
This comes off more like an essay, and I think the opening lines make the point well enough. Should this be trimmed down?

Hey, I looked it up but couldn't see anything about this...I was trying to find the franchise page for the Scream films (1, 2, 3, 4, TV series, and the upcoming 5th). It was deleted to "correct the namespace", which I don't understand.
It's now under Scream, which I think is actually more confusing now that the IP itself has produced content other than films (e.g. the TV series), and especially since the 1996 original film was also called Scream (and the 2022 film has been announced to be called Scream as well). Other movies with similar audience and reach (e.g. A Nightmare on Elm Street) have their own "franchise" pages, and I think it would be better to either pothole Scream or make it for the original (the 1996 version), and give it a general Franchise entry for all the content.
