open Esoteric Happy Ending example? Film
"* Frozen ends on a supposedly happy note with Anna and Elsa finally reunited after 13 years of separation, Elsa learning to feel again and learn to control her powers, and the citizens completely adoring their new queen of Arendelle. However, even though Anna and Elsa do reconcile with each other, it still doesn't change the fact that they lost all the potential childhood they could have with each other for nothing and due to not knowing the other during that time, they are essentially complete strangers and have to restart their relationship completely from scratch, particularly when things are so much more complicated in their adulthood than they do as children which makes a close bond between them uncertain. There also the fact that even though Elsa managed to control her powers through love, depression and trauma doesn't really go away overnight and due to having spent a really long time in isolation, it would only be time before she reverts to her old habits again, especially since Anna has never been informed the reason why Elsa isolated herself in the first place meaning that even her sister wouldn't be able to help her from depression. Furthermore, a sudden change in weather and an Endless Winter for three days must surely brought some casualties for the citizens either by hypothermia or famine and given the fact that the queen's response to the whole thing is to abandon her kingdom, she certainly doesn't make a good first impression in front of the citizen and would likely have a lot of people out for her blood compared to Hans whose first action as the new king is to them blanket for cover and is supposedly trying to execute the witch for the goodness of the kingdom. It's also been established that Weselton is Arendelle's largest trading partner and by having Elsa cut all ties, it leaves the kingdom hard-pressed to find another close trading partner and given Elsa's actions during the coronation, it is very unlikely that other kingdoms would even trust their new queen to open up a new trading partner, leaving the kingdom in great turmoil. Realistically, it could actually take years, if not decades for them to fix almost all the issues listed above and it is very likely that another trouble could prove even more irrepairable damage on both the kingdom and the sister's relationship. On another issue, Hans being sent back to his family is supposed to be seen as merciful fate where everyone agree that its for his best except that by sending him back home, he is sent back to his abusive family where they would undoubtedly bully him even more, with the implication that he will never be able to escape from his terrible life, unlike Anna."
Is this an example or people reading way too into things?
Edited by lalalei2001openInternet Backdraft on Httyd
There's some dispute with another user regarding Httyd 3 who doesn't think Internet Backdraft is a trope that should be there. They're arguing that said backdraft is based on "skewed opinions" and shouldn't be there, but honestly, the fandom's completely eating itself right now and I really think that's worth some kind of mention. Thoughts?
openformer page name of Series.Casualty
The page history for CASUAL+Y seems like it was moved from another page in 2013, do we know what page it was previously on and if we have that page's history?
I ask this because there are some entries on the page and subpages about an actress called Amy Wren who was an extra on the show, and they seem like they were added by the actress herself (all complimentary and link to her professional website).
If this is the case, it seems like at least the subpage examples should be removed, because it's a creator about their work and themselves. Still, I feel like the main page entries should go, too, because of how self-aggrandising they are. With a full page history, it would be easier to see who added them and determine if it is the actress.
openLinks to Video Reviews Web Original
I've been noticing an increasing number of articles that have "Hilariously reviewed by popular youtube critic LINK" or "you can watch a great let's play here LINK" as the bottom paragraph. Is this appropriate?
These links can be fun, but putting them in top of the page seems inconsistent at best and like ugly self promotion at worst.
openTroll edit of The Guy with the glasses; needs fixing Web Original
Peng 1 recently deleted nearly everything off That Guy with the Glasses and replaced it with a single line denouncing the show. I'm not capable of fixing the page myself since I don't really know how the editing works, plus I'm not sure what the proper response to said troper is. Regardless, figured I should bring it up, even if I'm not entirely sure this is the right place... And now another troper, Magicwolf 78, in his own words, plugged his favorite book series on the page as well.
Edited by Hero2014openVictoria Literature
So, questions regarding Literature/Victoria have come up several times, but discussion always peters out with no solid conclusion, so I hope to just get an answer once and for all. First, the description states unequivocally that the comparison to The Turner Diaries is unfair. No reason is ever given for this (it claims that it is self-evident by comparing their trope pages, I have and still don't see it). The other point of concern is the Tearjerker page
, which seems really suspect. My main question is why we seem to feel so strongly about maintaining neutrality on this page. I know we claim that as a universal policy, but it clearly isn't. Look at the page for the aforementioned Turner Diaries or Birth Of A Nation or (to move to the opposite end) Mission to Moscow. We would never tolerate any of these being described as merely "controversial", as Victoria is. Hardly a line on these pages goes by without a denouncement of their politics. Even works that are merely widely hated but nowhere near as odious get far less balance, like Fifty Shades of Grey. So why is so much neutrality demanded here?
openCan my page be moved to the "Creators" namespace...? Music
Um okay, so a while ago somebody made a page on me: TurretBot
Which is fine, keep the page, I don't care. I don't want to disrespect The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours, I only did one edit to correct a few factual errors, that's it, and I don't plan to edit the page for any more than that... But I want the namespace changed. The page is currently under "Music", and it should be under "Creators".
"Turret Bot" is NOT a work. That's just my username. And, I do things other than music (the page conveniently leaves out my non-music stuff, but I can post links if you want proof). For all that, I believe the page should really be moved to "Creators"...
So can someone please move the page to Turret Bot for me? Since the page is about me, I feel like moving it myself would be crossing the line, I don't want to get in trouble or anything. Ok that's all. Thanks in advance...
openQuestionable addition
User Lunatic0verlord added this to the YMMV for the Black Bullet page.
- Moral Event Horizon: After the mob of cursed children haters slaughtered (either by bombing or lynching and possible raping, depending on which medium you follow) Rentaro's cursed children students, most sane persons simply can't bring themselves to understand their hatred or think that the humans who hate the cursed children could ever let go of their disdain towards them. Hell, many would be excused of wishing for a genocide.
His edit reasn stated; "I simply can't bring myself to think they could even possibly have a point in why the cursed children should be seen as monsters, anymore. Anything in me that said "well considering what they'll become and what they've been through, I can understand" is now as dead as those children... I WILL FUCKING SKIN THEM ALIVE AND HANG THEM BY THEIR OWN FUCKING ENTRAILS BEFORE FUCKING BURNING THEM ALIVE!!! FUCK THOSE MOTHERFUCKEEEEEEERRRRRRSSSS!!!!!! Sorry, I just have a lot of unstable and highly volatile feelings in me right now... None of those cuties deserved it, none of them *sob* NOT A FUCKING SINGLE ONE OF THEEEEEEEEEM!!! I'LL NEVER FORGIVE THOSE FUCKEEEEEEERRRRRSSSSS!!!!!!"
Not to sound jumpy, but this....kinda sounds concerning since the entry is very awkwardly worded and the edit reason is kinda.....yeah...
openJames Stewart Film
James Stewart, George Bailey himself, one of 20th Century's most famous Hollywood actors. Billed as "James Stewart" in every acting job he had from 1935 to 1991, except for a TV show that briefly ran in the early 70s.
His TV Tropes page is listed under Jimmy Stewart.
Before I go to the Trope Repair Shop I'd like to take the temperature for support of a rename.
openedit war about natter
22 jan, i deleted the following paragraph of natter in The Sociopath example in Characters.Frozen Prince Hans Westergaard Of The Southern Isles:
" But it's also zig-zagged here, as Word of God has explicitly described him by this term while emphasizing him as a Tragic Villain with a big Freudian Excuse, making it debatable to say if he is a sociopath or not. A Frozen Heart greatly emphasizes this as well as demonstrating there are people he genuinely cares for. It's implied he's only emulating his father's abrasiveness. In fact, his father may be a better description of this, as he doesn't care for his family unless they're useful to him, treats his subjects like trash, and reacts quite violently if they criticize him or fail to provide him with favors, money or food."
29 jan, njein added an other similar paragraph: "But A Frozen Heart reveals that Hans initially averted this, as his original goal was to permanently escape his abusive family and settle some place else quietly for good. But years of serving as his father's gofer and corrupting his own ethics out of a nigh-impossible desire of winning his father's respect, all led to his downwards spiral towards villainy."
I removed this as natter in the same day.
5 february, Duel Mark added the following paragraph with " added and altered to work better" as edit reason:"That said, Word of God has explicitly described him by this term while emphasizing him as a Tragic Villain with a big Freudian Excuse, making it debatable to say if he is a sociopath or not. A Frozen Heart greatly emphasizes this as well as demonstrating there are people he genuinely cares for and has self-loathing issues, aspects that sociopaths don't have. It's implied he's only emulating his father's abrasiveness."
Reading the edit history, i noted the edit war, sent a natter alert in 9 feb and waited by an answer.
Shortly after this, they deleted their more recent edit in the page with "not interested in discussion for now" as edit reason. I interpreted this as a permission and deleted the natter.
11 feb, Duel Mark re-added the paragraph and deleted half of the example with "Actually something important to mention, especially since it shows signs he's not a real sociopath" as edit reason.
openplug-in edit
So, a user with a plug-in edited Self-Fulfilling Prophecy to install the following:
- Frozen has infant Elsa injure Anna with her magic. When their parents take her to the trolls, the head troll warns them that Elsa's magic could be devastating if not controlled, and emphasizes the threat to Anna if she gets hit in the heart with ice magic. The parent's response is to lock Elsa away, to teach her what a threat she is, and to repeatedly tell her to repress her feelings and her magic so she doesn't hurt anyone. This causes Elsa to develop severe anxiety and fear about her powers, which in turn mean she is no longer able to control them. As a result, not only does one of her panic attacks freeze all of Arendelle, but guess how she accidentally almost kills Anna?
This edit also activated the plug-in (it changed the words Great Depression on the same page to Clutch Plague), and Fighteer did a system revert on the page to undo the plug-in, erasing this entry.
Should this be restored? I would have asked on the query that got the troper suspended, but that one was locked.
Edited by jameygameropenTroper changing descriptions without discussion. Allowed?
Nutgunner is making some changes to trope descriptions and I'm not seeing any discussions on the topic. See their updates to Homing Projectile, My Hero, Zero and Copy Protection for example.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=Nutgunner
They also modified an image caption (Stupid Crooks) and added a JAFAAC image (I Just Want to Be Loved). I sent notifiers for the image changes to direct them to IP. (Note that adding an image to the blank I Just Want to Be Loved isn't against the rules, but the image itself is JAFAAC. I made an IP thread to find a better image) Hopefully Nutgunner can participate.
openVideoGame/{{Overwatch}}: Retcon or not?
The 1st February 2018, Michael Chu told on Twitter and the forums
that D.va was never a starcraft professional, despite her being teased on a page that repertoried Starcraft pros, her bio on that site telling she became the 1 in the world at 16 and kept that title for three years, touring around the world, her announcer pack for Starcraft 2 telling the same thing
, multiple Blizzcon panels where that was told, and the game diretor himself calling her a Starcraft pro in an interview a month before the reveal.
Chu says that establishing her as a Starcraft pro was never the intention and that they were only trying new ways of teasing heroes.
Is this a retcon or not?
I ask because me and number9robotic are in a bit of an Edit War on whether or not it's a retcon.
Edited by cricri3007openThe 20th Century, Part 2
Continuing from HERE
.
I originally meant for the page for The 20th Century to be an index, but due to Julian Lapostat's eloquent Wall of Text edits, it almost looks like a Useful Notes page, which was not supposed to. I had a disclaimer to keep it brief, which Julian missed the point, to put it bluntly. I'm still debating myself on whether I should turn it into a Useful Note or keep it as an index.
On another note, I trimmed much of his edits that were wordy and redundant, but I could only do much. There are some sentences and paragraphs that I couldn't abridge due to how complex the wording is. So, to be short and honest, can anyone help me shorten the description to be Clear Concise And Witty?
Edited by alnair20aug93openTombRaider and alternate continuities?
I've just made this edit to Tomb Raider, changing :
- Alternate Continuity: The Crystal Dynamics games are set in a completely different continuity to the Core Design games. Same for the movie and the comic book series (and there are three different continuities for comics, too). The Square Enix game is set in yet another alternate continuity. Into exactly what continuities the assorted gaiden games fall is up for debate. There are also books and animated series - all of them set in different continuity, often mutually exclussive.
- For a while, two game continuities were running alongside; the Second Crystal Dynamics series has a sequel in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the first Crystal Dynamic's series getting a followup (sort of) in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.
to:
- Alternate Continuity: There are at least six different canons within the franchise.
- First off, is the 1996-2003, or "Original Continuity".
- Then there's the Crystal Dynamics, which is a Continuity Reboot.
- The Core Design games continuity
- Then the Square Enix era, which takes elements from the Crystal Dynamics and Core Design, forming a new continuity of its own which takes the original in Broad Strokes.
- For a while, two game continuities were running alongside; the Second Crystal Dynamics series has a sequel in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the first Crystal Dynamic's series getting a followup (sort of) in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.
- The movie with Angelina Jolie is its own one-shot, self-contained continuity.
- Then there's the comic-book adaptations, which have three continuities, running alongside one another.
- Finally, there's the 2018 Continuity Reboot, starring AliciaVikander which goes back to basics and abandons all previous continuities for a clean-slate reboot.
I'm checking to ensure this makes sense - I'm doing a wick check of this trope and trying to give every entry where Alternate Continuity is used a bit more detail so that readers can tell how it is an Alternate Continuity to the original.
Edited by Merseyuser1openProbably non-kosher entry on ''Holy Terror''; thoughts?
On the Holy Terror page (about a comic book written by American author Frank Miller) someone felt the need to interject Real Life Dutch politician Geert Wilders (as background: he's best-known for his stance against immigration of non-Westerners, specifically Islamic, people into the Netherlands; and is in the Netherlands a political figure as polarizing as Donald Trump is in the U.S. (and lately frequently compared to the latter)). It seems nonsensical to drag a Real Life politician who doesn't have any relevance to the comic book plot (written by and set in a different country than said politician) into this entry, it seems almost as trolling. Also as a double whammy, a lot of natter then follows about the nature of the U.S. and its constitution - doesn't seem relevant to the comic book either.
Probably better to remove the Geert Wilders (and the natter about the U.S. constitution?) stuff out of this entry, but knowing how polarizing political stuff is, I wanted to ask for feedback here first. This is the entry:
- Bile Fascination: Just seeing how much religious bashing in portraying Muslims in general as motivated by violent extremism at worst and misguided, helpless victims at best can be put into a single set of one hundred pages is quite not good taste, but it's certainly a level of awfulness that one cannot help but keep looking in disbelief that such Geert Wilders-ian style ethnic/racial/religious hatred stoking can exist in the United States, a land that prides itself in incorporating and integrating the various people of the world based on the ideal that, to quote the United States Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal" and are "endowed by their creator the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
open Does Single Stroke Battle only apply to swordfights, or can it apply to fist fights as well?
The page itself seems to imply that it's only for swords (citing it as the Sword Counterpart of Showdown at High Noon), but there are some examples of barehanded fights on the page as well.
openInterpreting In Universe characters through their actors on YMMV
OK, here's a delicate one. I'll try to formulate as neutral as possible.
7th Heaven ran from 1996 to 2006. Years later in 2014, it came to light that main actor of that show Stephen Collins had sexually molested children in Real Life.
Now the 7th Heaven YMMV page is riddled with backwards interpretations of his In Universe character, Eric, through these horrific acts the actor commited in Real Life. E.g. Eric is called a Base-Breaking Character due to what his actor did in Real Life; there are lots of potholes to Harsher in Hindsight regarding any scene Eric's character had with a minor girl, etc.
So my question: in how far do we interpret / judge characters on YMMV pages through the lens of what their actors did in Real Life?
Because I think on this particular page, the In Universe character Eric is Troped too much on what his actor did in Real Life, than on the character as himself In Universe.
openEdit War on Agents of SHIELD recap Live Action TV
This troper https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=Peeve
has basically started an edit war (last 3 edits) about what he personally sees as 'objective', despite the matter being present as the typical 'AI gains consciousnes and overthrows her creator' on the show, with Aida doing a lot of things clearly out of spite and self-interest, not just 'following her programming' and several tropers besides me see it the same way, so just deleting it is not very productive.

The character pages for the Kirby series (link here
) have been going through a lot of restructuring recently. Where we originally had one page for every villain and boss, we now have four pages: Villainous Factions (for major villains that are part of a group), Other Major Antagonists (for major villains that are independent), Recurring Bosses (for bosses that make repeat appearances throughout the series), and Other Bosses (for bosses that have only appeared once or twice). There’s also a page for characters specific to Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, which has been seen as unnecessary by myself and a few others for a while. Someone else has already removed any character from the Return to Dream Land page that can be found on another page. All that’s left on the game’s page are one-off bosses. I’d like to move these entries to the Other Bosses page and get rid of the Return to Dream Land page entirely, but I’m certain the Other Bosses page will become too long if I do. Should I split the page again? Remove any characters that only have two or three tropes attached to them? Leave these pages as-is?
