openRule of Editing Judgement Potholes
Does anyone else find the trend of putting things on pages like "and that's all were going to day about that" potholed to Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement instead of just not mentioning it at all really condescending and obnoxious?
Almost seems like a dare to start a flamewar in and of itself.

opensystem not reverting edits
Looking to the history, i guess that a mod tried revert the edits of bounced troper Incandescent Brood in Pokémon Anime - Team Rocket. Looking to the page itself, their edits stayed there.
openMassive Edit that ignores Discussion Page on Characters/OverwatchOffense
Hi, I'd like to ask a mod to revert a massive edit that was made on Overwatch Offense.
Not long ago, Overwatch writers made a post on Twitter that contradicted things which had been stated in materials previous to that, in particular, regarding the Face–Heel Turn of one of it's main villains. Afterwards, it was brought up on the Discussion page
and there, I argued that regardless of what Word of God says now, the supplementary materials they'd published previously contradicts it. While of course, stories can always change, revise itself, or outright retcon previous information, it doesn't change what was published.
As such, I'd like to request a reversion on the mass edit that was made by Tropers.Winter Valkryie. It seems premature, especially since the aforementioned discussion petered out before a decision was reached.
openAHI-3000 and LGBT Self-Discovery
The draft LGBT Self-Discovery
has been attracting random discards and it was discarded for a third (fourth?) time without any comment. I don't know if it has been the same troper each time, but the most recent time was a mass discard spree by AHI-3000. I've looked at the drafts he discarded and I agree with all but this one. That said, silently discarding (i.e. not saying anything ahead of time) does not seem kosher. It isn't this troper's responsibility to discard drafts and it seems like he takes the TLP a bit... like his hangout. I say that knowing that he discards and launches drafts without comment from time to time.
If this particular draft wasn't having a silent discarder perennially discarding it, I honestly wouldn't think to comment about this since AHI-3000 usually seems in the right to discard what he does discard. But we — the people participating in that draft — seem to be in agreement that it isn't a duplicate, which was the main concern for that draft.
openMultiple Idiot ball edits and YMMV/TheFlash2014S4E10TheTrialOfTheFlash Live Action TV
Regarding an idiot ball edit . I removed it once as it seemed stated that Barry was stupid for refusing reveal his identity. Therefore due to his stupidity was unsympathetic. When a ) he gave valid and justified reasons why he wouldn't. The safety of his friends and family b ) various criminals have escaped before Killer Shark and Peekaboo so if they knew who he was his family would be targeted c ) As said to Iris he and the others would be constantly on the run and d) Noone in the Arrow verse has a publicly outed themselves for the same reason. Also it looks like another attempt to label Barry with a what an idiot or idiot ball trope for not revealing his identity. Despite those tropes were deleted for not applying to Barry's case. I have deleted it once. As has another troper. But it has returned either as unintentionally unsympathetic or what an idiot . The argument is the same that Barry is stupid for not revealing himself. However Barry made plain WHY. The same reason no one in the Arrow verse secret ID is public. Safety of friends and family.
Not only from Metas but everyday criminals he put away.
Not only that as a CI working for the Police any case worked and convicted could lead to hundreds of mistrials as Barry reveal as a vigilante could give grounds of conflict of interest. Basically the trope is calling him an idiot for not taking an action that could not be taken realistically
I want to remove the trope but that would be edit warring. Put it up for discussion but nothing.
Edited by Tuvokopen BewareQuietOnes -- personal bias, invalid example, vandalism
I don't know if this has already been done, but I'll call this person out anyways, just in case. So I just took a look at Satellite Character, and I noticed some extreme personal bias against Hinata in one of the Naruto entries. As pointed out in many of her examples in the Characters.Naruto Team Eight Members and as originally argued in the Discussion page for Characters.Naruto Naruto Uzumaki (see here
), Hinata is far more fleshed out than simply being Naruto's main love interest. In Chapter 78, Hinata admits to Neji that she wants to change herself because she hates herself for being weak, and she wants to be strong and be acknowledged by their clan. In Part II, Hinata protects Neji when he collapses in Chapter 540, cries when Neji sacrifices himself in Chapter 614, protects Neji's dead body in Chapter 616, recalls Neji training her in Chapter 633, pleads for Neji to protect Naruto in Chapter 662, dreams that Neji's alive in her genjutsu dream in Chapter 678, and mourns Neji at his funeral in Chapter 699. In The Last: Naruto the Movie (which is Canon), Hinata prioritizes saving her little sister Hanabi over everything else, including a chance to be with Naruto right after he confesses his love to her—to the point where Hinata "rejects" him for Hanabi. These are just a few examples of Hinata's actual characterization, with evidence taken directly from canon. Therefore, Hinata is not an example of Satellite Character.
Beware Quiet Ones was the troper who added the Hinata example. This is the only edit they have on here, and they entered this back on August 4th, but this one edit of theirs is extremely biased against Hinata, deliberately ignoring her characterization and Character Development. And I know for a fact that personal bias of any kind is not allowed here on TV Tropes. It's easily vandalism because this edit of theirs can easily be deleted because it's not a valid example of the Satellite Character trope.
Here is Beware Quiet Ones's edit history: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=BewareQuietOnes
Here is the edit history for Satellite Character: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Main.SatelliteCharacter&more=t

openIndex help
Supporting The Monster Loved One
is ready to launch, but I'm not sure what indexes to put it on. Obviously I don't want to launch with no indexes for it, so I'm looking for suggestions. I asked on the draft itself and got no reply, and the thread for this is too slow, so I'm asking here.
Update: I think I'm good, people at the TLP gave me some good index ideas.
Edited by WarJay77openHow Ron the Death Eater works
Question: I'm a little confused as to why the Ron the Death Eater page demands fanfic examples.
My line of thought:
1 The page is inconsistent about it. Some examples give no fanfics as proof 2 If the RDE-ing of a character is common enough, finding a fic as proof just feels like picking on one particular author amongst a crowd. This goes double for characters who are commonly bashed/hated because of ships, etc etc. as fics subjectng them to Ron the Death Eater will be ten a penny. 3 It's also not the only place that RDE-ing of a character will take place - any debate thread on social media/forums is bound to give rise to this in one form or another 4 Its equivalent, Draco in Leather Pants, doesn't require examples, even though its the mirror image of RDE.
Is there a reason fanfics are required as proof? If there is, then it needs more enforcement on the page itself (some video game entries have no proof example given) and if not then they should be reworded to general entries.
openPossible Real Life Example?
Doing a cleanup binge and came across Wreckless Media Radio. The ZC Es that were there aside, I want to ask about this example:
- Karma Houdini:
- Corpolongo once made a mess in a bar because the girl working there cut him off. He walked out afterwards with practically no problems. Being a bartender himself must have helped.
- The guys got a person hit by a car by challenging his faith. They still haven't been caught.
- Evil Greg allegedly is the reason a truck of Crown Royal crashed and exploded... because he was doing parkour.
Karma Houdini is tagged as NRLEP. The third one is most definitely just a character, and I would hope the second one is, but what about the first? I don't know this podcast, so I'd appreciate some input.
openReport (Speculation)
I am engaged in a debate with a fellow troper named Emberfist about the Live-Action TV section of Idiot Plot. The subsection in particular is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of late, Emberfist's justifications as to why the subsection should remain there are based off assumptions and oversimplifications. I provide detailed explanations as to why these opinions are incorrect and do not belong (you can check out the Discussion Page for yourself). He does little to rebut my statements, simply paraphrasing and rephrasing the same argument. He intends to keep all the examples, despite another Troper having arguing against them for the reasons I listed. I have tried to compromise; offering to delete the most egregious examples and move the rest to the YMMV subsection. Emberfist will not listen.
Because I wish to avoid Edit-Warring, I have chosen not to directly edit the page myself and will instead to defer to you guys.
What should I do?
openSpoiler issue on VideoGame.KingdomHearts3 Videogame
Yesterday, I removed the spoiler markup from the All White Entries on VideoGame.Kingdom Hearts 3. Tropers.Ashlay whited-out a massive chunk of a sub-example with the following edit reason:
"most people haven't seen or played X, this needs context. and spoiler tags."
Here is the sub-entry in question:
- The epilogue has Xigbar revealed to be Luxu, the original owner of Master Xehanort's keyblade. He then summons four of his fellow seven Foretellers, ancient Keyblade wielders associated with The Seven Deadly Sins whose actions brought about the first Keyblade War that literally ripped the worlds apart into what they are today, minus Ava (Greed) and their master (Pride). And, as Maleficent and Pete watch from afar, Luxu begins filling his cohorts in on what's been going on in the ages they've been away and what the plan is from here on. Finally, the game pulls out to the Framing Device, as a Young Eraqus and Xehanort start a new chess game representing the future conflict of the Seven Foretellers vs Sora.
From what I can tell, it violates Administrivia.Self Fulfilling Spoiler since it hides so much of the text. Is this level of markup kosher?
I have sent them a notifier regarding spoilers, but they have yet to respond. I'm asking here, too, to avoid an Edit War.
openNot sure about where information has been coming from for Avengers Infinity War. Film
- Lantern Jaw of Justice: Played with. He's a space tyrant with a god complex, but he still features a well defined jawline that you'd see on the various heroes to illustrate he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist meant to be a Foil to the good guys.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: This version of Thanos is driven to stop what he believes will eventually become an apocalyptic Overpopulation Crisis. By using the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe half of intelligent life, he'll be saving the other half from using up their natural resources faster than those resources can be replenished.
- Freudian Excuse:
- The majority of his species died after an Overpopulation Crisis led them to use up all the natural resources on his homeworld of Titan. Thanos believes it's his duty to stop such a tragedy from ever happening again... even if it means wiping out half the universe to save the other half.
- He was also ostracized during his childhood due to his genetic deformity, which played a major role in shaping his personality.
- Adaptational Heroism: In the comics, Thanos is a Death worshiper who killed half the universe as an offering to his "love". In the MCU, Thanos is a true Well-Intentioned Extremist who believes killing trillions is a necessary evil to "save the universe from itself" and protect trillions more from resource wars, overpopulation, and permanent environmental damage to their own homes.
Where has this information been coming from? I have not found any sources for this anywhere other than this site. I'm tempted to say this might be fake, as the movie hasn't come out yet for starters.
openFranchise Killer?
- Back when it was first announced, New Super Mario Bros. was praised for bringing the franchise back to its roots after 2D Super Mario Bros games had been dormant for years save for a few ports, and it was popular enough to warrant a sequel, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, in 2009, which also ended up being a reasonable success. However, New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U would end up splitting the Mario fanbase into two groups (3D fans and 2D fans) and were highly criticized for being unoriginal and formulaic. This is especially noticable considering the effect these games had on the series, with spinoff series such as Paper Mario (see below) and Mario Party becoming just as repetitive in nature, if not more so. Following the failure of the Wii U and Mario's decline in popularity at the time, Nintendo has stated that they wanted to move away from 2D Mario and wanted to move away from NSMB as much as possible, stating the next 2D Mario title would be a fresher experience. The last thing they did that had any connection to NSMB was Super Mario Run and Super Mario Maker which featured its aesthetic and gameplay as a selectable style for levels.
- Speaking of Paper Mario, the game that is often considered to have broken the camel's back for that series is Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Originally conceived as a traditional, story-driven Paper Mario game on the Nintendo 3 DS, the project wound up being heavily reworked into a much more formulaic game at the orders of Miyamoto himself, no less. As a result, the game was criticized significantly for removing many aspects that made the series so beloved in the first place. However, it did sell well enough for a sequel, Paper Mario: Color Splash, to be released in 2016. While the game was somewhat better received due to fixing some (though not all) of the problems that plagued Sticker Star, the Broken Base caused by Sticker Star ended up being alienated yet again by Color Splash. No new Paper Mario games have been announced since.
The former seems more like "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny, as it doesn't explain which failure (the Wii U failure is a different issue, as the Mario games was it's most successful part) led to the change. As for Paper Mario, these games normally have multi-year gaps between them, so I think it's too soon to say. Should one or the other be axed or altered?
openFandomSpecificPlot question Literature
A Christmas Carol has hundreds and hundreds of adaptations, but also fanfics, some of which have specific plots.
I added "* Fandom-Specific Plot: Many fanfics tend to revolve around freeing Jacob Marley of his chains or setting Scrooge up with Belle after his reformation, usually by having her husband die. Other common fics have Scrooge/Marley as a pairing, in life or after death."
to the book's page since it was fandom-specific and many of the ones I've read are based on the book as opposed to a movie. jamespolk then removed it saying it should go on an adaptation page, but many fics are nonspecific about which version they follow so most people assume they're book-based unless said otherwise. Where should it go, if anywhere?
Also apparently Fandom-Specific Plot itself isn't a YMMV trope, but its related page shows it on tons of YMMV pages.
Edited by lalalei2001openApplicability Web Original
I was browing the YMMV.The Nostalgia Critic page and noted an entry on applicability.
" Applicability: Autistic fans have welcomed Critic with open arms, with Doug comparing him to similarly coded Peridot, and Home Alone 2 bringing back the cereal special interest, all the nerves from the episode resulting in a meltdown when it's mocked and getting forgiven when he stresses out over thinking he ruined it. Hyper Fangirl has her fair share of Misaimed Fandom, but her most devoted audience are neuroatypical women who relate to her struggles and want to see her get better (without Critic having to forgive her). "
I didn't know what applicability as a trope was until I looked at the Laconic page, but it says "Word of God asks the audience to make up their own mind about the theme." which doesn't seem to fit these examples... and neither do many examples on the applicability page itself.
"Prometheus was designed for Wild Mass Guessing. One moment of Idiot Ball could mean an hour of theorizing behind why it is so. "
"The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1962) was made long before global warming and climate change became big issues, but is still about climate change which has been caused accidentally by technology (simultaneous nuclear tests at the north and south poles change the tilt of the Earth's axis)."
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a case of confusing applicability with allegory. The connection between The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the then-contemporary American political landscape was not even raised until 1963, when summer school teacher Henry Littlefield, while trying to teach the 1896 Presidential election and the turn-of-the-century Populist movement to bored history students, stumbled upon the idea of using the characters and events of The Wizard of Oz as metaphors to teach the concepts. He and his students made a number of connections - the Scarecrow represented the farmers, the Tin Woodman the factory workers, the Wizard was President Grover Cleveland or Republican presidential candidate William Mc Kinley, the Cowardly Lion was Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, the silver shoes were the silver standard, the yellow brick road the gold standard, and so on - and Littlefield eventually wrote an article, "The Wizard of Oz: A Parable on Populism," which was published in the magazine American Quarterly in 1964. You can read this article here. Unfortunately, this was eventually taken to mean that Baum wrote the book as an allegory for the political landscape at the turn of the century despite the fact Littlefield believed Baum had no political agenda when he wrote the book."
" Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid is open to many allegorical interpretations, as are its various adaptations."
So, what is applicability and are these examples valid/applicable? Should the Laconic page be rewritten?
Edited by lalalei2001

With Twitter now doubled their character count to some users (I havn't have that yet as of 2017/10/01), as I was editing the page to tweak out the recent edit from a user named reterusu, I left out this part out of reluctance to remove it and had to consult to you guys about it first:
I think it's more of a Broken Base than a metaphorical shark jump for having 280 characters, (I myself kinda like that idea. 280 is more than enough to add more tags.) but I'll let you think about it more. I intentionally left that sentence because I thought to myself that removing that might start a potential Edit War.EDIT: Changed some instances of "this troper" to "I to avoid confusion.
EDIT 2: I wasn't being clear here. My bad. The 'this troper' to 'I' edit" was for this thread only.
