openDubious Trope Namers Western Animation
TropeNamers. The Simpsons lists Glove Slap and The Dog Was the Mastermind. Glove Slap seems like too generic a term to be named by The Simpsons, while TropeNamers.Video Games lists Silent Hill 2 as the trope namer. The Dog Was the Mastermind page itself says in the description that the Silent Hill 2 joke ending is the Trope Namer in the description and the video games folder, while also saying in the Western Animation folder that the trope is named after the Simpsons episode "Beyond Blunderdome". "Beyond Blunderdome" aired in 1999, while Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001. SimCity is also listed as the Trope Namer for Not in My Backyard!, while according to Wikipedia, the term dates back to at least 1980.
openWhere would this scene fit? Western Animation
In an episode The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, Jimmy asks Goddard to use x-ray on Cindy's clothes when she's accused of stealing one of Sheen's Ultra Lord figures, prompting Carl to avert his gaze, Sheen to look on in excitement, and Cindy herself to furiously slap Jimmy across in the face at that suggestion.
Would that fit into Pervert Revenge Mode (even though the x-raying didn't actually happen), Power Perversion Potential, or somewhere else?
openNot an example of Idiot Plot? Western Animation
From Idiot Plot - Animated Films:
- The entire Final Battle of Incredibles 2 could have been shortened considerably if not outright avoided, allowing the capture the Big Bad before they fled the ship and preventing the entire crash, had anyone actually targeted the mind-controlling goggles during the fights. It's at least a bit understandable with the kids given their age and lack of experience, but the adults really should have tried just plucking them off instead of running or fighting until the goggles happened to fall off. Ironically the only character who does do this is Jack-Jack, entirely by accident, when reaching for his mom, showing how swift and effortless it really would have been.
In reality, adults did try to remove mind-controlling goggles from other supers as soon as they're freed (of course, with the difficulty of taking away a mind-controlling device from an enhanced human who fights back), and they manage to remove them, they don't just "happen to fall off". It's true that in the previous scenes kids didn't try to remove the goggles, but the entry itself suggests that their age and lack of experience can be a forgiving factor.
Since it's not A story driven entirely by all the characters being idiots that would otherwise take less than five minutes to resolve, but a specific scene, wouldn't that count at best as a Downplayed Idiot Ball, and perhaps not even that?
Bumping because the entry was readded. Edited by gc10
open MainstreamObscurity Western Animation
YMMV.Sonic The Hedgehog Sat AM had this added by Eagle70:
"Mainstream Obscurity: [[invoked]] This is a Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon, the first one to ever enter production, and arguably the most ambitious. It was also put under strict mandates and heavily preempted in most markets, and cancelled in a network buyout, only to have the franchise completely change gears in 1996, leaving this cartoon looking like an In Name Only adaptation. Despite the popularity of it's long running comic book spinoff and the show itself getting significant
critical
acclaim
from most reviews, the cartoon itself is hardly watched by most of the fandom. Additionally, the notriously broken Sonic fandom has elements that tend to hate the show and it's characters for not resembling more modern titles, despite not really knowing anything about the show beyond the premise."
I feel like this could be shorted significantly and with less potholes and bashing at the end, but am not entirely sure what to do. What do you guys think?
EDIT: Also it kinda is an In Name Only adaptation; per InNameOnly.Western Animation, AoSTH was the closest to the games until Sonic X.
" Besides the overall theme of nature vs. machinery, the only things Sonic the Hedgehog (Sat AM) has in common with the games are Sonic, Tails (who was Demoted to Extra), the rings (which here act as a Deus ex Machina device), Buzzbombers (which only appeared in the pilot), and Robotnik (who looked quite different from his appearance in the games and was substantially more fearsome than any other interpretation of the character). This does not stop it from being one of the more highly regarded Sonic adaptations. "
Edited by lalalei2001openBatman Beyond videos Western Animation
A lot of the video examples for Batman Beyond specifically come from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. However, the trope page for Return of the Joker does not itself have video examples. Shouldn't the videos be attributed to Return of the Joker instead of/in addition to the main series?
openNot a Clueless Aesop? Western Animation
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S1 E10 "Swarm of the Century"
- Clueless Aesop: Probably not entirely clueless, but as more than one viewer has noted, the aesop of this episode, if taken as the face value "you should listen to what your friends have to say instead of dismissing them", almost falls flat when one remembers that Pinkie Pie hardly ever actually tried explaining that she knows what parasprites are and how to get rid of them, giving up after one attempted explanation. In particular, Twilight specifically asks Pinkie if she knows anything about the Parasprites, only for Pinkie to mutter that she needs a trombone and leave without explanation. Considering all things, of course, this could more or less lead to a Double Aesop, as Pinkie pointing out at the end how she tried to tell them when they wouldn't listen makes it evident that she did learn the importance of explaining herself properly.
This seems more like a Broken Aesop, since Clueless Aesop is when a show fumbles in teaching harsh subject matter. Pretty sure "listen to your friends" isn't controversial. It also just seems like it's arguing with itself with the Double Aesop paragraph.

openEgregious Unintentionally Sympathetic example? Western Animation
- Applejack in "Hearthbreakers". The whole episode is supposed to be about her learning that she was being too closed minded about Pinkie's family and their Hearth Warming traditions, to the point where even her own family worn her that she shouldn't be interfering. However this glosses over the fact that the Pie family can easily be accused of the exact same thing, seeming to expect the Apples to follow their traditions without question and never allowing an alternative point of view. In fact, Applejack was the only one who did try and embrace the other's way, forcing herself to eat their rock soup when the rest of her family only complained.
This reads like a disguised Unintentionally Unsympathetic entry. It dosen't even tell us how Applejack ends up being sympathetic, just that everyone else around her isn't.
openRequesting New Addition to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Fanfic Page Western Animation
I'd like to suggest adding Don't Go
to the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Fanic Recs page, but can't do so myself without it being vouched for by a third party.
It was written by Annacharlier — who is apparently Noelle Stevenson herself — and bridges some of the narrative gaps in Episode 5
and Episode 6
of Season 5 (consider that a spoiler warning if you haven't watched the show yet). Regardless of whether or not Noelle herself wrote it, it's very well-written and emotional — if a bit more mature than the show itself is.
It also comes with some Adora-ble artwork
apparently also done by Noelle herself.

Yeah, what if Princess Bubblegum didn’t change her outfit like normal, she just presses a button that rapidly changes her outfit?
Like this for example:
Princess Bubblegum: (Presses the button: her outfit morphs into her sleeping gown with her hair in ties) “No” (Presses it again: her outfit morphs into a pink shirt with pink pants, as well as her hair tied in a bun) “No” (Presses it once again: her outfit morphs into her pink sweatsuit with pink jeans, oh, and her bun got undone, causing her hair to grow back to it’s original length) “No” (Keeps pressing the button multiple times, morphing her outfit as well as saying “No” every time, as well as changing her hair style in the process. She also got de-aged to her 13 year old self, and got aged back up to her 18 year old self when she pressed the button. Her outfit morphed into: Her light blue dress, her baby blue swan dress, her cupcake dress, her dull pink dress, her short dress, her purple pouch dress, her shirt dress, her pink winter hoodie, her 2nd short dress, her party dress, her yellow shirt, her blue lab coat with her witch hat, her Web Weirdos dress, her white and purple dress, and finally, her blue silky dress) (Presses it again: her outfit morphs into her winter sweater dress) “Ugh! No!” (Presses the button one more time: her outfit morphs into her lab outfit) “Yes! There we go! Finally! Now... off to the lab!”
Edited by ILoveCrossoversopenFridge horror on Arthur Western Animation
Found this on Arthur:
- D.W. becomes much more disturbing as a character when you realize that her treatment of Arthur and her behavior in general, despite her being only 4, is actually eerily consistent with a sociopath. She tends to see anything she wants as good and anything she doesn't want as bad, believes she is entitled to whatever she wants, is a Manipulative Bitch (often tricks others to get her way), is known to have outbursts, and seems to be learning to do what is socially expected of her even when she herself doesn't think she needs to do it but shows a complete lack of genuine empathy (for example, her Backhanded Apology in "Arthur's Big Hit", where she apologizes to Arthur for breaking his model plane when ordered to do so but doesn't actually feel guilty for it and still sees it as Arthur's fault for building the model wrong, therefore seeing anything "bad" as the fault of anyone but herself), and in general actually seems to enjoy making Arthur's life a living hell. So if she's already this sociopathic at four, what is she going to turn out like as a teen and adult!? Not to mention how this easily makes her one of the, if not the, most disturbingly fucked up characters to ever grace an Edutainment Show.
- While it's not canon, the You Tube video series Adult Arthur by AOK takes the "what will she be like as an adult" part and runs with it. It's not pretty.
Is this allowed here or no?
Edited by fraggleloveropenFanfic on main page Western Animation
On the YMMV page
for Miraculous Ladybug, somebody added a Broken Base entry that's specifically about a popular kind of Revenge Fic. In other words, it's not about the series Miraculous Ladybug itself. On the other hand, it can't be listed on a fanfic's work page since it's not about one specific fanfic but rather a popular subgenre.
So is it kosher to list an entry about a subgenre on the main work's page?
openPrincess Jasmine's Age Western Animation
A while back, I deleted a Values Dissonance entry on Aladdin's YMMV page stating Princess Jasmine to be 15 years old, as I had stumbled across a piece of trivia on Jasmine's page on the Disney Wiki saying she was going to be fifteen and that the Sultan would say that she's got to be married by her sixteenth birthday in an early story concept for the movie, but Jeffery Katzenberg nixed it because he worried about sending the wrong message by showing a fifteen year old girl getting married. It then linked to a book titled Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film, a book that talks about the movie's development, as its source. More recently, a fellow troper added a Fanon entry to the movie's YMMV page mentioning this exact information. However, Queen Of Swords just deleted it and re-added the Values Dissonance entry while linking to two articles as a source. One of which is a blog that says "although several of the princesses ages were never actually stated in the films, researchers have used aspects from the movies, interviews with members from the Disney corporation, and a general sense of how girls act at certain ages to compile enough data to at least guess at these ages"; from my point of view, this blog never provides any actual sources of their own to back up this claim apart from hearsay, and they even state that it's more of an estimation rather than a concrete answer. The other one links to a Buzzfeed article which itself links to the Disney Princess page on the Disney Wiki, stating that that's where their ages are found. However, I looked, and there's nothing there. Suffice it to say, I don't really consider these valid sources to back up the idea that Jasmine is 15, and I personally trust what a book, that talks about the movie's development and the people working on the movie while going into great detail about each of those things, has to say over what these people on the Internet have to say. I would delete the Values Dissonance example again and re-add fearlessnikki's Fanon entry, but I don't want to risk starting an Edit War.
Any thoughts?

Edited by Teenlyokofan7777openMLPFIM Season 9 Fridge Horror Western Animation
Didn't know if I should ask this on the forum or here. Spoiler warning as this involves a plot twist for season 9 of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.
Given that "Grogar" turned out to be a fake, should the following Fridge Horror entries about him be cut:
- Grogar is powerful enough to make Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow, all top tier season-ender villains themselves, AFRAID... and he's NOT at full power yet!
- Considering how powerful Grogar is without his bell, the villain trio deciding to betray him by stealing the bell for themselves might be the only reason why Equestria isn't flattened to the ground.
- Instead of giving Grogar his bell, Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy lie to him and claim they were unable to retrieve it. Grogar seems furious at this, but he has shown in the past to be able to view previous events. What if he finds out about their lie later, or already knows about it and has plans to deal with his traitors later?
- Grogar makes it very clear that, even in his weakened state, he has far more power than the three of them combined. With the bell still there as far as he knows, what's stopping him from trying to go get it himself now that the others have at least learned to cooperate, only to find it missing?
- With the amount of power Grogar would have gained upon getting his Bewitching Bell back, who's to say he wouldn't have decided he doesn't need the others anymore? Even if he had other plans for them initially, he's far more likely to decide that should he learn of their betrayal.
open Unfortunate Unfortunate Implications in YMMV/StevenUniverse Western Animation
Yesterday, Keshali added this to the Unfortunate Implications section of YMMV.Steven Universe:
- While Steven Universe is typically considered a trailblazer for LGBT representation, a lot of LGBT viewers and critics have pointed out its representation is actually pretty horrible
, from its relentless apologism of characters allegorical of homophobes (Homeworld, Uncle Andy) to the only actual LGBT characters being Discount Lesbians. To say nothing on the ambiguity of Bismuth’s racial coding.
- While Steven Universe is typically considered a trailblazer for LGBT representation, a lot of LGBT viewers and critics have pointed out its representation is actually pretty horrible
I have several problems with it. My write-up ended up being longer than intended, so TL;DR, the entry is built on blatantly false information from a website I'm not even sure counts as reputable, and I would like permission to remove it.
- This one's more of a general question, but does PopMatters even count as a good source? A quick look at the site shows it to be a generic news and music review site.
- Saying the Diamonds and Andy are given "relentless apologism" is blatantly untrue for the former and downright nonsensical for the latter. Whenever the Diamonds’ bigotry for Fusion (in this case used as an allegory for same-sex relationships) is brought up, the narrative and characters always treat it as a horrendous way of thinking, to the point that the climax for one of the penultimate episodes has the Crystal Gems fuse with each other in defiance of them and basically say "this is how we live our lives and we're not going to change that, so you can take your hate and shove it". And Andy... is never once portrayed as a homophobe. Old fashioned with a bit of Fantastic Racism, yeah, but he never once makes any comments that imply he's homophobic - in fact, when talking about how his family drifted apart after Greg left, he positively talks about his aunt and her partner (implied to be another woman), and later willingly attends a same-sex wedding with no fuss and has a good time at the reception.
- Regarding the Gems (or at least Ruby, Sapphire, and Pearl) being Discount Lesbians, Word of God - but not the show itself - confirmed that Gems are a sexless, genderless species that appear feminine and use she/her pronouns. Being genderless doesn't mean they can't be lesbians if they want to be, but I digress.
- As for Ruby and Sapphire's love for each other and Pearl's love for Rose being the only LGBT+ representation, this is also false. A lesbian couple and their son frequently appear in the background during the show, one episode has Pearl getting a crush on a human woman who reciprocates her advances, there are various moments where human characters blush or show attraction towards characters of the same gender (or characters they believe to be the same gender in Stevonnie's case) and all of Steven’s Fusions (in this context being an allegory for platonic and familial relationships) barring one use they/them pronouns, and Stevonnie is outright confirmed to be intersex and non-binary.
- Also, the bit about Bismuth and her possible racial coding feels really tacked on. Like, the entire entry talks about LGBT representation, and then randomly drops that sentence at the end without going into it more.
openEdit War in the Code Lyoko Characters page. Western Animation
Georgie Enkoom listed an example of Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse in the Code Lyoko page, where he describes a character that tries to be The Atoner, but is rejected by the other characters. I deleted it due to mis-use, as the situation described is actually Heel–Face Door-Slam, and the entry itself has many points that seem to be based on speculation. However, Georgie almost immediately added it back with no edit reason whatsoever, and worse, he undid another one of my edits where I explain/hide a few Zero Context Examples, apparently out of spite.
It should also be noted that his edits
have some basic grammar errors. A few of his latest ones include:
"As a good guy, he dishes one to nine Creepers, who doesn't even touches him."
"He can throw his swords, but it doesn't guarantees that it will always hit."
Some of his other edits are also blanket statements:
"Half the Man He Used to Be: One of his preferred methods to devirtualize the Lyoko-warriors."
"Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: see Half the Man He Used to Be above."
I have fixed some of these, but given his reaction to my first edit, I wouldn't be surprised if the conflict escalated.
