openNSFW warnings? Videogame
Would it be okay to add warnings for links that could be potentially NSFW but nothing explicit?
I would like to add an example to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate under Hilarious in Hindsight that involves a link to deviantart (You can already tell where this is going) and the link contains some....fetish art. Would it be ok to add a warning for any readers who might click the link as it could squick people if they're not prepared or into it?
Side note the picture itself is fine but the users page contains some racy art so would it be appropriate to post a link with a warning, just the image itself (which I'm hesitant as it doesnt give the creator credit), no link at all, or just axe the example altogether?
openDoes my entry have too much word cruft in it, or might be a bit too emotionally biased? Videogame
I've remade the Half-Quake entry over in Video Games, due to the entry I made before that being way too-run on and inconsisntent. I want to make sure I'm avoiding word-cruft and overly emotionally-charged content. Here's the entry I made so that way if there's any errors I've made, either regarding typos or not following the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment, it'll be here and not in some awkward place.
- The Half-Life mod trilogy "Halfquake", can be very difficult to sit through due to it's bleak message of "Life makes no sense, and you may as well just kill yourself" it tells you from the get-go, as well as it's murky-gray visuals after the first part. However, each of the three mods themselves carry varying degrees of overwhelming darkness that can be difficult to sit though just by themselves:
- The first mod, HalfQuake, stands as the least darkest part of the trilogy, but that really isn't saying much considering that you won't see much of anything that isn't either an enemy, concrete and/or steel, or lava. It also happens to be the only part of the trilogy that gives you a HUD, as well as the classic run/gun action of the first Half-Life game. The fact that throughout the mod, you can't escape the facility is made rather clear in a section where you sneak through the backrooms and into a house, only to be dumped right back into the trap-laden path uncerimoniously with a message aptly saying "you cannot escape, dumbass (sic)". You also end up getting killed right after you defeat the boss of the mod, Somos, which is also how the other two parts end as well.
- The second part, Halfquake: Amen, takes a swan-dive right into darkness as well as dump most of anything related to conventional FP Ses out the window. Most of the time spent throughout Amen will be either though the life or death chambers, semi-lonely atmospheric enviorments, or deadly traps/puzzles the first game uses. Whilst the captors in the first game made humourously dark remarks about the situation you're in, Amen ramps up the "dark" part, but not the "humorous", leaving you to deal with cruel and unpleasant people after cruel and unpleasant people. Amen also provides music for some of the parts you'll be going through (including an ending song, "Half-Quake Theme), the songs themselves rather downbeat, both in music and lyrical content.
- The third entry in the series, Sunrise, gameplay-wise, is where the series really starts to become an exersise in futility, the deadly puzzles and trap-laden hallways really starting to ramp up in this iteration. The few splashes of color that the previous two games had, aside from camoes near the end, are now entirely gone, save for a really, really light blue. Story-wise, aside from the final boss and a few disembodied voices, there's no NP Cs to interact with in Sunrise at all, your only form of breaking this sheer emptiness being a "Victim Message Box", which introduces to the only 3 people you'll be hearing from consistently throughout the mod: A guy voice who wants you dead and taunts you, a crazed man rambling about a cogwheel named "Mary", and getting angry at you when you're unable to find her (not that any cogwheels you can grab appear in the mod), and a lady who really hates you and wants you dead. The pitch-black atmosphere of Amen is also present as ever here, and doesn't stop for any moments of levity.
- Half Quake's spinoff, "Personal Halfquake", is directly based on Amen and a bit of the original Half_Quake, as well as having updated to support some of Sunrise, and it proves to be just as dark as the main game. Most of the game is spent stealing people from what's implied to be places that haven't done any wrong, and placing them in similarly made trap-laden hallways the Half-Quake trilogy features. Most of the places you go to are all managed by slaves, who have either been broken beyond repair, or are jerks who loathe your guts. The "Chosen Victim" mechanic involves kidnapping one of your victims, and inducing Stockholm Syndrome in them, allowing you to do paticularly cruel things to them.
openInvoked YMMV Videogame
SasquatchX added this to Characters.Super Smash Bros Ultimate 70 To 75 in the Hero's folder:
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Invoked Trope, as the inclusion of Eight among the playables is this. Sakurai makes mention in his interview regarding the acquisition of the Heroes of Eight's status being the one that western audiences are most likely going to recognize.
This isn't proper use of Invoked Trope isn't it? Using it for YMMV items is for when said item occurs within the narrative itself, not when it is used as a reason from Word of God for including something within a work.
Edited by homogenizedopenCharacter Page for VideoGame/FireEmblemHeroes Videogame
The character page for Fire Emblem Heroes has mostly characters from the game itself but a few characters from the games before it. My question is, and I asked this in the Discussion tab a few months ago but nobody responded, would it be smarter to just make character pages for the different playable characters based on their home game? We do that to an extent for games like Heroes of the Storm and Fate/Grand Order where they have characters from existing works given a character page, but not Fire Emblem Heroes.
openIndentation example I need clarification for Videogame
This is for the Dissidia Opera Omnia page and to also be wary of any indentation issues I've come across that lead to my suspension.
So far, I've planned to do a portion on Thancred's Folder for the character pages of DFFOO in this format:
- Charge Meter: Thancred's new mechanic via his EX Ability's passive which nods to how ninjas work back in FFXIV as a Mythology Gag. A scroll icon with a number above his head (and above any buffs placed on him) will indicate how much "Ninki" (lit. Stealth Qi/Ki) he has left. The following actions below described interact with the number like so:
- Using his normal BRV Attack or HP Attack when under 3 stacks will raise his Ninki counter up to 1, while using either Jugulating Wasp or Shadow Fang will grant 2 stacks instead.
- If up to 3 stacks, his BRV Attack will be enhanced by his Ninki, where it deals higher damage to poisoned targets, has high chance of a 4 turn poison infliction on the target, and allows his next skill usage to be zero cost on his next turn. However, using it will consume the Ninki amount by 3.
- His EX Ability also turns into a plus version of itself where it can overflow up to 200% Max BRV instead of the normal 120% when at 3 Ninki stacks or higher, but will also consume 3 Ninki likewise when used.
Is this formatting plausible? I might replace the Charge Meter trope part with something else if I can find a better substitute.
Edited by SneaselSawashiroopenI Might Have Accidentally an Edit War Videogame
A user did an edit on Characters.Dead By Daylight, changing a descriptor if Ash J Williams from "An alone wolf" to "a lone wolf". This happened once before with the person adding back noting that "an alone wolf" is deliberate as it's a quote/reference to the series.
I did likewise, putting the descriptor back, but realized after I might have become edit 4 in an edit war since there was already one "remove and put back" sequence.
I think this falls under correcting incorrect information, but to be on the safe side I PMed the user who did the removing (who since replied they'd forgotten that from the show), added a commented out note explaining it's deliberate to prevent future well intentioned correcting, and posting here to head off any issues I myself might have caused.
Edited by sgamer82openWork has trope from a fanwork on the original work page Videogame
On the page for Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, the very first trope, Abusive Parents, is from a fangame rather than the game itself. I understand if whoever added it can't think of enough tropes from the fangame to give it its own page, but this feels wrong. What should we do?
openAm I the only one that feels that call of duty zombies YMMV Page needs cleanup Videogame
Link here https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/CallOfDutyZombies
Ok, let's not beat around the bush: this YMMV Page is kinda messy: It has chevkov's gun in this section for some reason... It Also has a few "as noted above/as noted below" that end Up being confusing as heck. And things like this:
Scrappy Weapon: The SMR, with excellent reason. Bad power, low capacity, arduous reload speed, semi-automatic and worst of all, it has a glitch that makes aiming down the sights exactly the same as hip firing, giving it almost nonexistent accuracy. It was never even patched during the lifetime of Black Ops II. Yeah, good luck aiming down the sights across 50 feet. After an update, the SMR FINALLY started to redeem itself in its Pack-a-Punched form, which gained improved accuracy. The Springfield, a weapon so weak it can't even one-shot a zombie in the chest on round 1. That in itself is inexcusable, but even worse is that the ironsights are off, requiring you to aim slightly to the left of what you want to shoot, otherwise you'll miss. On that note, the Kar98k. The only two things it has over the Springfield are that it can be bought off the wall on most Wa W maps for 200 points, and it doesn't have misaligned ironsights. Other than that, it's just as pathetic. Go ahead, try Pack-a-Punching it. It'll totally be worthy of the name Armageddon. In general a good chunk of starter weapons become this, due to fact that they become weaker as time goes on..
Sadly, I have barely any knowledge about call of duty zombies' story or Gameplay. If someone that was familiar with this series could help... It would be appreciated. Maybe splitting the YMMV page in two could also help
Edited by RAHDRONopenWant to ask this in hopes of preventing an EditWar Videogame
So, in Unbuilt Trope I recently added the example of how Resident Evil 4 codified the Press X to Not Die trope and how it mainly existed to play up the Survival Horror elements and keep the player on their toes during cutscenes.
However, not a day later I checked back and see someone had replaced Resident Evil 4 with Clock Tower in the example. I don't want to change it, mainly because I never played Clock Tower myself so I can't say anything.
Can anyone verify if it's a better example for this trope or should be reverted back? Since I don't know anything about Clock Tower I don't want to get into a possible edit war over this. All I really know is that Press X to Not Die didn't really take off until RE4 did it, even if other examples existed earlier.
openIsn't the Splatoon series a case of Gray and Gray Morality? Videogame
I thought about the Splatoon series and one thing came to mind: On one side, you have the selfish Inklings who only care about style and sports while the Octolings are destructive and militarized. Because of the these two sides, isn't this case of Gray and Gray Morality?
openSpoiler issue on VideoGame.KingdomHearts3 Videogame
Yesterday, I removed the spoiler markup from the All White Entries on VideoGame.Kingdom Hearts 3. Tropers.Ashlay whited-out a massive chunk of a sub-example with the following edit reason:
"most people haven't seen or played X, this needs context. and spoiler tags."
Here is the sub-entry in question:
- The epilogue has Xigbar revealed to be Luxu, the original owner of Master Xehanort's keyblade. He then summons four of his fellow seven Foretellers, ancient Keyblade wielders associated with The Seven Deadly Sins whose actions brought about the first Keyblade War that literally ripped the worlds apart into what they are today, minus Ava (Greed) and their master (Pride). And, as Maleficent and Pete watch from afar, Luxu begins filling his cohorts in on what's been going on in the ages they've been away and what the plan is from here on. Finally, the game pulls out to the Framing Device, as a Young Eraqus and Xehanort start a new chess game representing the future conflict of the Seven Foretellers vs Sora.
From what I can tell, it violates Administrivia.Self Fulfilling Spoiler since it hides so much of the text. Is this level of markup kosher?
I have sent them a notifier regarding spoilers, but they have yet to respond. I'm asking here, too, to avoid an Edit War.
openListable examples of Self-Imposed Challenge Videogame
So when it comes to things like Game Mod, Let's Play, and the various types of fanfic, we don't trope audience responses on a work's main page.
So for Self-Imposed Challenge, what kind of examples would be valid to list on a main page? Because I'm seeing stuff like "have you tried winning under various arbitrary restrictions" on Fortnite, or "some players try beating the Bonus Boss while affected by a glitch that speeds up the game" on Deltarune.
openShould we recreate Shadow the Hedgehog's Self-Demonstrating Article? Videogame
I just learned there used to be a Self-Demonstrating page for Shadow the Hedgehog, but it got deleted because it wasn't "distinct enough and an uninteresting SD page for a stoic character." Is it a good idea to recreate it, but better than the last one?
openCombined examples needing split Videogame
I'm working on a trope page for a project of mine (though I'm keeping it off TvT itself until said project gets far enough), but I'm having a problem with two of them. At the moment, they had to be merged into a single example in order to make sense, but I want to split them into separate entries that still reference each other in a coherent manner.
- Attract Mode/Automatic New Game: When the game is first started, the main menu treats you to a flyby of the Hub (sans portals) in the background, with the menu itself disappearing if the game is left alone long enough. When a new game is started, the menu goes straight into it’s Attract Mode as if it’d been left alone, but the music starts to fade out instead of remaining on, as the camera slows to a stop. A few seconds later, we’re treated to a loud *THUD* followed by an equally loud “...Ow!” from Mike after another second, immediately going into the intro mission’s starting cutscene from there.
- On subsequent loads, the game does the same thing, but for the world the player was last in. But instead of going into attract mode, it instead fades to black (which also functions as a concealed loading screen), before cutting to a short scene showing Sam/Mike waking up, at which point it seamlessly switches to gameplay.
- When starting a new game (or new game+) when not in the Hub, it will start differently, with the game fading out as normal, before the loud thud is heard while the screen is still faded out. Beyond this, the scene starts as normal.
openWe've Got a Scrappy Problem Videogame
About a month ago, I deleted all the entries for The Scrappy on Criminal Case because they were clearly meant to be hated and hated badly. Here it is for reference:
- The Scrappy:
- In the 2014 Criminal Case Wiki Awards
, Miriam Young won the game's "Most Annoying Character" title (by a very huge margin) due to her cold and domineering personality, and her cruel treatment towards Amy (who, by contrast, was voted as the fan favorite). Not only that, several fans have gone as far as saying that she should be in jail instead of Duncan even though he's the Night Walker.
- Albert Tesla also qualifies, for abandoning his son, thinking himself to be Pacific Bay's God, nearly destroying it and killing fan-favorite Frank Knight when he attempts to stop him. He's even voted the game's "Most Annoying Character" of 2015.
- Sarah Bennet was voted as the "Most Annoying Character" on the 2016 Criminal Case Wiki Awards
. Rightfully so since she nearly killed Jack, killed Dupont and Natasha (regardless of her affiliation with SOMBRA, she's still Marina's mom), and nearly caused World War III.
- Horatio Rochester was voted as the "Most Annoying Character" on the 2017 Criminal Case Wiki Awards, owing to his attempt to fully control Concordia as a city-state and abolish press freedom. Moreover, unlike Justin Lawson, who was ultimately a Well-Intentioned Extremist who Jumped Off The Slippery Slope, Horatio has no redeeming qualities and is motivated by selfish and petty reasons.
- In the 2014 Criminal Case Wiki Awards
I discovered only today that three days later, user pizzasoda66 added them all back. Their reasons were, and I quote, "The description of this trope is "The fans hate this character for some reason.". Just because they're supposed to be disliked doesn't mean they're not scrappies. Why do you think they were voted as the most annoying character?"
Whether or not a character who's meant to be hated can qualify as a Scrappy anyway is a mug I don't wanna chug right now, but their description of The Scrappy as a trope is way off. It's the given explanation on the laconic page, which feels like an artifact of the past, and should be changed to add the qualifier "against the intentions of the creator". Because that being the case, again, none of these assholes are unintentionally hated.
I would go back and say this, but I'd rather not get hit with an Edit War accusation and edit banned for it. What do you guys think?
openRed Dead Redemption 2 Videogame
Should We Have This? Got myself a dumb question here, at the trivia section of Red Dead Redemption 2 there a line that says "Jossed: RDR and GTA don't take place in the same universe. In "The First Shall Be The Last" New York gets name-dropped in conversation, of which neither state nor city exist in GTA." without direct Word of God information out of pure speculation and might have contradict itself due to a stranger mission called geology for beginners
Edited by IndepthEtheropenSuggesting material Videogame
I'd like to add a something to the God of War (2018) page of tropes. Specifically to the Nightmare Fuel page. I don't want to add it myself. I only want to point this thing out to a troper who had previously worked on/edited the God of War Nightmare Fuel page.
openURL question Videogame
What kind of YouTube URLs should we link to? I saw over on YMMV.Yu Gi Oh Reshef Of Destruction, MaLady changed a standard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= URL to https://youtu.be/, which automatically redirects to the former when clicked and lengthens the URL in browsers. The page itself doesn't seem long enough for URL shortening to be necessary.

Here's a courtesy link.
The troper Dragon Ranger keeps changing the words that describe Dragon Quest's Hero away from noting the "characters" represented. Officially on Twitter, Sakurai does mention he uses specific designs for the characters, while Smash itself does not actually use anything but Hero. We however don't have a release of the character at all. Do note more than one person is involved.
Relevant links; https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=VideoGame.SuperSmashBros#edit23510343

Changed without an edit reason at all by Senior Cornholio.

This was beforehand by Dragon Ranger, also with no edit reason. Meaning that he didn't think to actually take it to Discussion at any point. I do not know if he has edit warred before.

Edited to input the names, by Ause.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=VideoGame.SuperSmashBros#edit23270942
Dragon Ranger is the first one to put the line. Which makes some of this jarring. This is more protecting the article than actually making a proper attempt at discussion.
