openOrdering the examples of TropeName in various media lists
Is it fine for me to alphabetize examples of tropes in the various media folders? (I just realized that might be breaking a rule or considered a frivolous edit after alphabetizing the Live Action TV examples in Sweet on Polly Oliver) It's admittedly something that I'll probably rarely do, but I could see myself being especially-bothered once in awhile by something especially egregious (Something starting in V sandwiched between examples of shows that all start with the letter B for example)
openPygmalion gender swap?
I was asking myself what a gender-swapped Eliza Doolittle would look like. Is there a trope reversal where an experienced woman moulds a man and then falls in love with her creation? There's the original "Galatea, or Pygmalion Reversed" and beyond that, I didn't find much.
I'm curious what you trope experts think of this. Is this because in the many romcoms where a man tries to woo a woman and is rejected, but then betters himself and wins her, the man has more agency than Eliza Doolittles? Is the gender-swapped version of the Pygmalion trope common enough but it's just watered-down weaksauce when it happens? Are there significant and serious productions (perhaps as a comedy, but not as a parody) with the man being largely transfomed by the woman?
openThe Bird Feeder (Webcomic) page - safe to recreate? Webcomic
I'm the creator of The Bird Feeder webcomic, and there used to be a page here for it, though it's since been removed (see https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Webcomic/TheBirdFeeder
). I understand completely why that was, as it had several Zero Content Example and Weblinks Are Not Examples violations, and I've since moved to a new CMS and changed the structure of the links anyway, so most of the page would be pretty useless.
I was wondering, though, if it would be seen as bad form if I recreated the page myself, using an archived version of it as a template, and added some better descriptions for the examples. The page wasn't originally made by me, and I'm prepared to receive any abuse given to me for even asking to do this, but it was just a thought I had.
Edited by arkholtopenTroper with really...odd habits
Tropers.Chester Polar Bear seems like to edit sex-related tropes. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but then he makes edits in the My Girl Is a Slut and Ethical Slut tropes stating that Daphne and Freddie from Scooby-Doo are swingers because they wear ascots.
Also, they've made a lot of edits on The Chikan that just seem...inappropriate.
They don't seem like a malicious or abusive troper, but I thought I'd bring this to your attention.
openTricked "other stuff"
More than once I've seen Trick Arrow being potholed for Trick "something else" such as yo-yos or umbrellas. And Trick Arrow page itself also lists stuff like that.
Is that an okay thing to do?
openWander Over Yonder examples
I was wondering if someone could split the examples on Wander over Yonder into folders. I could do it myself, but I don't know which letters to use for each folder. (For instance, should the first be A-B or A-C?)
openTalking to Himself
Talking To Himself (especially its subpage for Live Action Film) seem to have a lot of examples that are actually live actors. I would just remove them, but there's so many I wondered if there are subtle distinctions that mean they don't qualify for Loads and Loads of Roles. Is it because the actors don't actually appear on camera at the same time?
open Politics on JonTron part 2
People are still adding political/drama posts onto YMMV.Jon Tron. While I don't agree with Jon's views, considering the recent stream debate we should probably add some message warning people against adding these types of examples on the page itself.
openSelf-Demonstrating Articles
I know what Self-Demonstrating articles are, both as a trope and a page. As a trope, it's used in an article to parody said article. As and article, it's a thing describing itself(Such as the Wheatly and G La DOS pages). It also appears that the Self-Demonstrating articles are the mains for those characters. So, how does one make a Self-Demonstrating article for a character? Do you modify the main and it gets nominated Self-Demonstrating, or do you make a separate page altogether?
openProbably non-kosher entry on ''Holy Terror''; thoughts?
On the Holy Terror page (about a comic book written by American author Frank Miller) someone felt the need to interject Real Life Dutch politician Geert Wilders (as background: he's best-known for his stance against immigration of non-Westerners, specifically Islamic, people into the Netherlands; and is in the Netherlands a political figure as polarizing as Donald Trump is in the U.S. (and lately frequently compared to the latter)). It seems nonsensical to drag a Real Life politician who doesn't have any relevance to the comic book plot (written by and set in a different country than said politician) into this entry, it seems almost as trolling. Also as a double whammy, a lot of natter then follows about the nature of the U.S. and its constitution - doesn't seem relevant to the comic book either.
Probably better to remove the Geert Wilders (and the natter about the U.S. constitution?) stuff out of this entry, but knowing how polarizing political stuff is, I wanted to ask for feedback here first. This is the entry:
- Bile Fascination: Just seeing how much religious bashing in portraying Muslims in general as motivated by violent extremism at worst and misguided, helpless victims at best can be put into a single set of one hundred pages is quite not good taste, but it's certainly a level of awfulness that one cannot help but keep looking in disbelief that such Geert Wilders-ian style ethnic/racial/religious hatred stoking can exist in the United States, a land that prides itself in incorporating and integrating the various people of the world based on the ideal that, to quote the United States Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal" and are "endowed by their creator the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
openAction Mom and Mama Bear Misuse
The Digimon mom example in particular is problematic in that Sora's mom IS NOT action oriented, she's a flower arranger who otherwise never fights or does anything remotely action oriented, she's listed because she "Fearlessly Saved Sora From Danger" which should go to Mama Bear... which in and out of itself has become bloated to mean "Any female who fights for her loved ones, regardless of if they are her actual children". Its really annoying and we should do something about this.
open Does Single Stroke Battle only apply to swordfights, or can it apply to fist fights as well?
The page itself seems to imply that it's only for swords (citing it as the Sword Counterpart of Showdown at High Noon), but there are some examples of barehanded fights on the page as well.
openWhat should an entry for OneWordTitle on a Work page look like?
What should an entry for One-Word Title on a Work page look like?
I'm just having "One-Word Title", and then nothing after it, if it's obviously, like Manga/Bleach or something like that.
It seems allowed? According to the hidden comment at the top of One-Word Title:
"(Obviously most examples here will be self-explanatory, but if you're going to refer to a series with a multi-word title which consists of works with one-word titles, without actually referencing any of those works, that's a Zero Context Example.)"
openDo Sub Tropes have to be utterly enclosed by their Super Tropes?
Do Sub Tropes have to be utterly enclosed by their Super Tropes?
Like is Character Title actually a Sub-Trope of One-Word Title? Because a title could refer to a character without being only consisting of one word, like "Silver Surfer".
Super-Trope itself says:
openStellaris YMMV example about a racist mod and controversy Videogame
We have this example on YMMV.Stellaris:
- What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?:
- A user created a mod that turned all Human phenotypes into European ones. While not particularly significant, the user also added the tagline "No Multiculturalism Here!", which resulted in the comments section of the mod being about what you'd expect with such a tagline. Cue the mod being deleted within the blink of an eye, a teacup tempest erupting over it, and the mod being brought back. You can read all about it here.
For the record (again), Paradox are Swedish. And that is all that will be said about that.

There is an Example Indentation issue already, but the example has other issues. Particularly potential drama importation/Flame Bait (note the Internet Backdraft pothole. The racist nature of the mod itself also does not do the example any favors) and that it is the only time on the YMMV page in which a Game Mod was referenced. Paradox being Swedish was likewise also unmentioned on the page outside the example. The history revealed the reason for the referencing of Sweden and the indentation. Both were tied to another example (added by a different troper) that was cut by the Trump/ROJEC thread. In which case I ask if we should cut it or not?
Edited by MorningStar1337openIs This Trope Used Right?
So there's this entry on YMMV.raocow:
- Dude, Not Funny!:
- The reaction he and his fans had to the "Lowest Ranked Levels" world of Vanilla Contest '14. The overworld was designed to mock the troll entries the contest would receive in previous years, except most of the lowest ranking entries this year were either just average or ambitiously misguided. Regardless, these levels looked as if genuine effort was put into them, and didn't warrant being labeled as complete abominations by the category they were placed in.
- In a MAGLX2 level (Sad Skillful Military Base
), somebody made a "sad cat room" as both a joke and a memorial to both their own cat and raocow's cat Gaston. This turned out to be one of the biggest tearjerkers in the history of raocow, probably a bigger tearjerker than the original video
which was made when Gaston passed away ( the joke was about how the "villain" of that level was so evil, he set up a room for cute things being sad out of spite ). Many people felt like the joke was in really bad taste (and raocow even said "sometimes a joke goes a bit too far"), but raocow said that he didn't mind it, it was just that it was very unexpected. Also qualifies as a Mood Whiplash.
Thing is, Dude, Not Funny!! as a YMMV entry should relate to the work/person itself rather than what said work/person's reacting to, so the use of this entry seems wrong. There's also the issue of complaining on the first part of it. So with that being said, should this whole thing be cut, modified, or left as is?
openEditing error. Film
On the page Logan I made an edit for a speech and then clicked enter to stop an editing mistake which succeeded with the previews. Someone undid the enter causing that editing mistake again. I don't want to fix this myself because it could be confused with an edit war.
Edited by ReynTime250openDeleting Pages
How do you delete a page? I just made a new trope page for a dinosaur media entry, but the authors of the work the page described felt it didn't deserve a page and I find myself inclined to agree with them.
openTitles with Descriptions, Style of Index Pages and Long-Lasting Anxiety
On 23rd Nov '16, at Main/Manhua, I deleted the descriptions of every single entry on the page, leaving behind only the titles of the works, citing "We can save the descriptions for the individual pages; this page is just for indexing." I was motivated by how most of the work index pages lack these information and still function alright despite so, making me think that they are unneeded.
The incident prompted a PM discussion between me and fellow editor Mercy, and there was also an ATT thread here started by Mercy that you can find by searching for "Wuz" concerning the situation. (I don't know how to link an ATT thread)
The ATT thread "concluded" that due to how inconsistent foreign-language indexes are, at least original language titles should be restored, and the rest should stay as is.
The case may have ended, but the anxiety never died, and it came back again. Around a month ago, I found this: Web Serial Novel. The page is literally filled with entries that have descriptions going alongside the titles and the occasional description-less title-only entry, and once again I became anxious over this issue again as I debated with myself if I did the right thing in removing all the descriptions, or if I really was being brash in editing without discussing. (for the record, I am anxious over a lot of things, and this is just one of them)
Looking through Administirivia, I didn't really see a style guide on how should index pages be written. Should they have descriptions going alongside the titles? Or are they cluttering the page and making things hard to look through? Those are my questions.

Art on Deviant Art is tropable, right?
Should there be a list for tropes that art on Deviant Art has? ... Hmm... Well, I guess that should be the Website page itself, no?
