Ask the Tropers:
openClarification of rules and/or guidelines regarding self-promotion.
I have been trawling the Administrivia pages for rules and/or guidelines concerning self-promotion, particularly of the brazen sort, and have found nothing. I now ask someone on here for the answer. You see, I have run into some examples of self-promotion that are, as I said, brazen and moderately shameless. If you were to follow the links of this page
, then look at the top of the literature sections of each page, you will find a certain work has been spat out on top of everything else. Even if it isn't against the rules, I would consider it impolite. So, what do?
openAnother unneeded Self-demonstrating Character
Dimentiosdragon changed the Sans folder on the Undertale main characters page
to first person.
openGoodIsNotDumb
I want to make sure I'm using this right because I feel this trope sees a lot of misuse. As I understand it, Good Is Not Dumb is about a character's kindhearted or good natured choices being ridiculed and condescended to by the villain, before ultimately proving to be the smart, pragmatic thing after all and saving the day. In essence, it's not about a character who is both Good and Not Dumb, but about Good itself proving to not be as dumb as others may believe. The hero's kind-heartedness pays off and wins the day.
I see it used from time to time for characters who are kind-hearted and nice and thus underestimated by foes, but who triumph over those foes by also being really powerful and violencing them into submission. Which doesn't really prove that Good Is Not Dumb, just that you can be Good and also really good at violence. As I understand, this is Trope Misuse.
Do I have this right?
Edited by TobiasDrakeopen Something is the matter with Persona 3
While cleaning up main page wicks, I came across Persona 3... but for some reason, most of the subpages are not appearing at the top (including the page itself, bizarrely enough). If you need proof that Persona 3 has subpages, look here. What exactly is happening there?
Edit: This appears to be happening on... ALL of the pages now?
Edited by MegaMarioManopenAlright. I just need to ask one thing.
Should Self Demonstrating / Palutena come back? In my opinion (And as someone who played KI:U) It was VERY spot on to Palutena. But it said "This page was cut for reason: Lacks a distinct voice, plus it's heavy on fanon."But we still have Captain Falcon, which in the original source material. (F-Zero not Smash) Relying on "FALCON PUNCH!" and "HOOOOOWAAAAAAAHHHHH!" which neither are in F-Zero. Should we cut Falcon and bring back Palutena?
open Yet another stupid SD page Videogame
Phoenix Wright exists. Why?! Why in the name of common sense does this exist?! And do I have permission to kill it with the hottest, most scouring, cleansing fire I can get my hands on?
open Eiyuu Senki: The World Conquest Videogame
A while back I noticed a discussion about building a page for this game, but the page was removed due to the sexual content of the game itself. An all-ages version with the sexual content removed was recently released and localized on the PS 3. Despite that all-ages version release, is the game still banned from having a page made?
openStandardization of Japanese Names/Phrases
There have been a few edits in Project × Zone and other pages related to that series where quotes and names are changed from the translation/spelling as they appear in the game itself to either reflect a more direct translation or how the names appear in their home series.
Wanting to make sure: Is the standard practice to stick with the official translation and spelling for that work within the work's page even if the character's name is spelled slightly differently in other official appearances?
open Nothing Is Scarier
Editor Knight 20 has reverted the page Nothing Is Scarier to the state it was before a move of all the content of the "Video Games" folders to the subpage NothingIsScarier.Video Games, which was made precisely because this page was getting too big, thus reinstating the warning "This article is too long." when you edit the page.
Given the amount of content that was moved, I would prefer the mod to revert this rather than trying to correct it myself. (Don't mind my edit above his, I realized the problem afterward).
openName of UK children's TV show with man and cartoon version of him as a child Live Action TV
I am after the name of a UK children's TV show that aired within the last 10 years. The two main characters were an adult and a cartoon version of himself. Being the same person (albeit at different ages) they had the same name but were prefixed with 'big' for the adult and 'little' for the cartoon boy.
open Troper behavior in The Hateful Eight pages Film
I would like to ask how to proceed about the behavior of BebeJumeau on several pages relating to The Hateful Eight, were he or she seem determined to impose the view that the character of Daisy Domergue is a victim completely undeserving of the treatment she receives in the movie. To wit:
1) Asshole Victim entry
On 31st Dec '15 5:48:19 PM wdfan added the Asshole Victim to Daisy’s section of the The Hateful Eight page.
On 26th Feb '16 9:46:57 AM BebeJumeau removed Asshole Victim from Daisy’s section claiming the trope was based on personal opinion.
On 27th Feb '16 11:08:57 AM GKG put the trope back, rightfully pointing out that Asshole Victim is not a YMMV trope so it is perfectly valid to put it in the characters’ page.
On 5th Mar '16 5:42:46 AM BebeJumeau once again removed the trope from the Daisy’s section without explanation.
On 8th Mar '16 7:28:16 PM plcthecd put the trope back, requesting that BebeJumeau stop removing it without explanation.
On 9th Mar '16 11:34:48 AM BebeJumeau once again deleted the trope, claiming that because her death was cruel and her crimes never explained then her death wasn’t justified. You will notice this has nothing to do with the meaning of the trope.
On 9th Mar '16 2:36:17 PM I entered the picture and put the trope back, arguing that as a criminal and member of a and of criminals who is victimized by the other characters Daisy qualifies as Asshole Victim.
On 9th Mar '16 8:18:23 PM BebeJumeau once again deleted the trope claiming that YMMV was being presented as fact.
On 9th Mar '16 9:09:45 PM I put the trope back, with a more detailed explanation for why the character qualifies for it.
On 10th Mar '16 1:10:28 PM BebeJumeau once again removed the trope, arguing that the word asshole itself was “crass” and replacing it with Anti-Villain, a trope that does not fit the character as she displays no “heroic goals, personality traits, and/or virtues” whatsoever.
At this point I decided not to add the trope back so as to avoid getting into an Edit War, but I would like to ask how to proceed about this issue.
2) Fandom Heresy & Fetish Fuel entries
On 19th Feb '16 1:21:26 PM BebeJumeau added the Fandom Heresy trope to the The Hateful Eight page
On 19th Feb '16 10:15:48 PM GKG deleted this trope from the page.
On 20th Feb '16 10:53:40 AM BebeJumeau put it back.
On 10th Mar '16 12:47:09 PM BebeJumeau added the Fetish Fuel trope to the The Hateful Eight page along with a quite extensive explanation about why Daisy’s treatment in the movie was gratuitously exploitative for fetish’s sake, which she constantly expanded on 10th Mar '16 12:52:28 PM, 10th Mar '16 12:54:44 PM, 10th Mar '16 12:56:57 PM
On 10th Mar '16 1:01:08 PM Discar deleted both tropes because: “Fetish Fuel doesn't get examples, and not an example of Fandom Heresy.”
On 10th Mar '16 9:09:04 PM BebeJumeau put back Fandom Heresy and at 9:26:04 PM put back the large text that was previously under Fetish Fuel under the Alternative Character Interpretation entry, without using any spoiler tagging for the spoilers contained in it. Then further expanded the text at 9:31:14 PM.
On 11th Mar '16 2:30:37 AM Discar once again had to delete the Fandom Heresy entry.
3) Demonization
On 9th Mar '16 12:05:30 PM BebeJumeau added the Demonization trope to the main The Hateful Eight while at 12:26:29 PM adding it to Daisy’s section of the The Hateful Eight page.
On 9th Mar '16 2:41:14 PM I removed it from The Hateful Eight page and at 2:49:52 PM from the main The Hateful Eight page, as it is my understanding that this trope only applies when a character or concept is purposely made to look as evil, when in fact they’re not, and there’s not evidence that Daisy is being presented by the movie as more evil than she is.
On 9th Mar '16 8:18:23 PM BebeJumeau added back the entry in the in the The Hateful Eight page claiming that Daisy was “demonised way disproportionally”
On 9th Mar '16 9:01:45 PM I removed it once again with a more detailed explanation as to why.
On 10th Mar '16 11:17:17 AM BebeJumeau added it again to the in the The Hateful Eight page, and at 12:23:38 PM to the main page, arguing that the amount of punishment the character receives compared to the other characters warranted that trope.
I disagree with this interpretation but at this point I decided not to delete it again on either page so as to avoid getting into an Edit War, but I would like to ask how to proceed about this issue.
Overall, I would like to ask the mods how to proceed from this point forward, as I believe that any further attempts on my part to correct the improper use of the tropes in the The Hateful Eight pages will inevitably result in an Edit War, as shown by BebeJumeau’s behavior over the course of several months and involving several tropers, one of them a P5.
Thank you for your time.
Edited by SeptimusHeapopenDeadpool Main page Print Comic
Hello, I'm a long time lurker here and on a whim after seeing the new deadpool movie i checked out the page and to my horror it has been replaced with unreadable gibberish of a "self demonstration page". Well fine I thought I will work my way to the main page only to have it redirect me every time no matter the link used. This is starting to really grate me that some fans are forcing their jokes on others by replacing things with SD material. But when I tried to find a way to reach the main page I noticed a couple mods and others mentioning that there was no main page ever made. Now of course that last time I looked at the deadpool page was awhile ago sure but it absolutely wasn't after this SD nonsense. And I was right, using the wayback machine to early 2010 there is a well made main page for deadpool with absolutely no self demonstrating. Now I'm wondering why people are trying to insist this page never existed and that the deadpool page was always self demonstrating even to the point mods will say it but the old main page apparently got canned sometime in 2010 in favor of self demonstrating article and seems to have never been changed back. The old page can be found on March 4, 2010 for the main page of deadpool.
openRedirects: Free, or Not?
I've always understood that Redirects Are Free, since... well, it more or less says so on Needs A Redirect (and the phrase is itself a redirect to said page). But now apparently we have prove that there's a "demonstratable need" for the redirect's existence, according to this
. I do not see anything on Needs A Redirect or Creating New Redirects that says anything of the kind, nor could I find any announcement to the effect. Since when did the policy regarding redirects change, and what's the rationale behind the current stance?
openDuplicate character folder on Zootopia character sheet Western Animation
I can only access the Internet on my phone right now, which is why I'm not fixing this myself. Somebody mistakenly added a "Mr. Otterton" folder to the Characters.Zootopia page when there was already an "Emmett Otterton" folder. Can someone who has access to a connection with a computer please merge any non-duplicated information from the "Mr. Otterton" folder to the "Emmett Otterton" folder?
open Undertale-related Edit War Videogame
It looks like there's something going on in Video Games regarding Undertale. Now I don't know that much about Undertale itself, but Buttersilk did leave a pretty rude edit comment on putting his entry back.
open Complaining About A Game They Don't Like
Buttersilk added an example to Broken Aesop.Videogames for Undertale stating that the game's pacifist aesop is broken because the player is criticized for killing a single person (even in self defense), thus locking them out of the Golden Ending. I deleted this and stated in the notes that it's not a Broken Aesop because the game doesn't discredit itself for making its point. The point of the game is that killing is bad, even IF done in self defense, and that people should try to find another way, no matter how hard it is. As such, I'd state that it's probably a naive or unrealistic aesop, but one the game sticks by.
Buttersilk then replies with a rant about how the game's writing sucks and forces you to "endorse its hypocrisy".
So yeah, I think someone's a little upset.
openNew Self Demonstrating page
Someone just made a Self Demonstrating Page for The Riddler.
Edited by SeptimusHeapopenRetcon-based tropes and Contiunity Reboot
Are tropes that are described as variants of the Retcon trope (e.g. Revision, Rewrite) also applicable to Continuity Reboot, which describes itself as a close relative to Retcon?
open Schwarzenmarken: Selfish Love Anime
I feel some of the points made contradicted one another and the fact that selfish love is a very loose term that technically can be interpreted differently. As I felt her love wasn't all that selfish as if you saw your crush falling for someone else I think many people would become selfish. So what is your definition of selfish love and why did you believe she was since I never got the feeling that she wanted to own him.

I saw the history of SelfDemonstrating.Character Pages and I have seen that Adam West has been recreated, and R. Lee Ermey is not even that interesting.
