open Wiki/VsBattlesWiki
A page for Vs Battles Wiki was created today. The main purpose of that wiki is to categorize various characters by their powers, strengths, and weaknesses and pit them against each other — think DEATH BATTLE! as a wiki and with way more people involved.
The page has only been live for a few hours and already it's filled with tropes about the wiki itself and its users. Assuming the actual content of the wiki is enough to trope, is it worth it to keep the page around?
Edited by Crossover-EnthusiastopenPossibly problematic RecursiveCrossdressing entry
From the Real Life section of Recursive Crossdressing:
- Trans people with non-accepting extended families often have to crossdress for family events, even after physically transitioning and legally changing their names. They effectively have to cross-dress and act as their birth gender just to be accepted in these situations.
To me, that entry looks like it was written by someone who undestands transness as the person becoming their preferred gender at some point in life rather than having been that gender all along. Being cis myself (with a perpetually-behind education on the subject), I want to let the people the entry is about weigh in before anything is done.
Edited by NazetrimeopenHow do we handle actor pseudonyms? Videogame
On Characters.Command And Conquer Tiberian Sun, one of the character's actors (CABAL, in the Nod folder) is listed as their pseudonym, but in parenthesis, it mentions that they were credited by their real name in the manual (not sure what they're credited as in-game, never played it).
How do we handle situations like this? Do we use their real name (if known) or their credited pseudonym? The actor in question — Milton James
— had multiple pseudonyms that he used for different roles. Do we use each one as credited, or just stick with his real name for every role?
What about cases like the original Metal Gear Solid, where nearly everyone used a pseudonym but used their real names in sequels? Which names do we use there? Does popularity mean anything? David Hayter is pretty much universally known as the voice of Solid Snake (he even played himself in MGS4), but he was credited as "Sean Barker" in the original MGS1.
In some cases, actors use pseudonyms to accept non-union roles (This is actually why they used pseudonyms in MGS1). Does that affect anything?
open Is there's a way to get unbanned from TLP?
So apparently I got banned yesterday for making fun of the person who made Gay trope in TLP. And I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to hurt anyone. But is there's a way to get unbanned from TLP or should I wait until I got unbanned? Btw I tried go to this forum (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=5cma6iojg5o27puhulc24sje&page=871#comment-21771)
to explain myself but I don't know if people will go there .
openQuestion
First, can I remove self-promotion examples I did for my Sonic fanfics because of Old Shame? Such as the "Blood of Beauty" example on Transplanted Character Fic. (I swear I removed that a long time ago, but someone reinstated it shortly afterwards.)
Second, crazysamaritan removed this example I wrote from the same article for Examples Are Not General:
- A good number of Sonic the Hedgehog fanfics are this. There will usually be no robot-smashing action and the only major connection will be the cast of teenage Amazing Technicolor Funny Animals with distinct personalities that can fit them in every premise. Stories range from Sonic and company in Mundane settings and situations and Brought Down to Normal (High School AUs are the most common type) to them as supernatural creatures such as Vampires.
I still see general examples in the article. Are those kosher or not? Could these be moved to an analysis page?
Edited by PrincessPandaTropeopen Tropineasily back again
tropineasily recently added both natter and bad indentation in the same edit. Usually I'd just send a notifier and move on, but in this case
I figured it was worth posting here.
EDIT: Also, they're having problems with English again. In this edit
they write "Riju, while the leader of the Gerudo, she's still a young girl, sometimes giggles to herself and plays with her plushies before going to sleep."
openPaper Mario Origami King Development Speculation Videogame
So in Paper Mario The Origami King's Trivia page, I wrote this.
Troubled Production: Based on what can be inferred from interviews and clues from the game itself, there's a case to be made that during the game's development, there was quite a bit of friction between Intelligent Systems and Kensuke Tanabe.
- As mentioned above in Executive Meddling, the development staff was not allowed to create original characters based on mainline races in the Mario cast, as was possible in the first two games. Kensuke Tanabe enforced this based off of Shigeru Miyamoto's one time expression that he thought that the Paper Mario series was deviating too far from his vision of what Super Mario Bros games should be like. Tanabe took this to heart... by shutting down any and all elements that deviated from standard Mario fare that weren't completely different in the first place. This is in spite of Miyamoto having since expressed that he doesn't want the Super Mario Bros. franchise to become stagnant by only using tropes and characters that audiences are familiar with.
- Intelligent Systems were vehemently opposed to Tanabe's extremely strict meddling on how characters were allowed to be presented in the game, despite not being able to challenge the ruling. So instead they resorted to walking around the rule as much as possible. Olivia insisting on referring to Bob-Omb as Bobby, along with the Legion of Stationery all having wildly exaggerated personalities to make up for any lack of visual detail beyond each being an Animate Inanimate Object are just a few examples of the developers trying to skirt past this rule.
It was shot down as Speculative Troping, and while I want to bring attention to some of the details that I found regarding Origami King's development, I also don't want to break any wiki rules. So I asked the person who erased it if I should put this in the game's WMG page instead. He told me that he thought it was frowned upon, and that I should ask here before doing anything else.
Should this be placed on the game's WMG page as a "meta" (theory outside of the game's lore) tab, somewhere else entirely, or does this sort of stuff have no place on TV Tropes?
Edited by MetroidPeteropen [Resolved] Suspicious TLP
This TLP draft
is for an H-game. Judging from the draft, it's probably not something that the P5 would want here, and the Wikipedia page for it
has a very, uh... questionable plot summary itself. And that's not even getting into all the problems with the actual draft, like the broken formatting, zero-context examples, or the fact that the draft uses the game's Japanese name rather than its English name of Stepmother's Sin. This draft needs to be nuked.
But that's not all. The person who posted the draft, YusukeYagami777, named themselves after the game's main character. Said troper has no edits on the wiki or posts on the forum, which makes me think they're here for the sole purpose of launching a hentai page.
Edited by SeracopenMore of a correction Anime
I didn't feel comfortable changing it myself, but in the Art Shift entry for Megazone 23, it erroneously lists Haruhiko Mikimoto as the character designer for part 1. This is only true for the character, EVE. Despite the very similar art style, the other characters in Part 1 were designed by Toshihiro Hirano.
While not really an error per se, in the Gratuitous English entry, Shogo's SEX WAX jacket in Part 2 isn't actually Gratuitous English, it's an actual real-life American brand of surfboard wax produced in California!
openDarkhorse misuse?
I suspect these examples from EnsembleDarkhorse.Pokemon are to major characters/intended to be popular to count.
- Ash's Greninja. His species was already quite popular to begin with. But Ash's one gained further admiration. He has a die-hard attitude of being dedicated to his training, only choosing a trainer who could help him get stronger, the mysterious prophecy foretelling greatness for Greninja and Ash. He then went on to become the Breakout Character, where the XY&Z arc gave him the pseudo-Mega Evolution form as a result of synchronizing with Ash, and became Ash's most focused Pokémon for a while. That being said, his popularity took a critical hit following his infamous defeat at the hands of Alain's Charizard. Even so it is still one of the most often-requested Pokémon to make a comeback.
- Ash's Rowlet quickly earned a fan base due to it's Adorkable, dozy personality, along with avoiding the usual fate of comic relief Pokemon by being one of Ash's most effective in battle throughout early Alola.
- Ash's Torracat. It already got attention when it first appeared in the trailer as a Litten, before the series had even premiered. While Litten in general are already quite popular due to their grumpy attitudes, Ash's Litten had further appeal by adding in a Hot-Blooded nature and a tendency to burn Ash much like his past fire-types. Then its character got really fleshed out with it trying to look after the elderly Stoutland who ended up passing away. By the time Litten joins Ash's team it already had a special place in the fans' hearts.
- Ash's Meltan, for both being a cute little powerhouse, being Ash's first Mythical Pokemon, having a fun dynamic with Rowlet, and evolving into the gargantuan Melmetal.
- Just to complete the Alola team, Ash's Lycanroc fits the bill as well for not only being a big loveable mutt but serving as Ash's main powerhouse throughout Sun and Moon, so much it ultimately wins Ash his first ever games-based Pokemon league. Such a bone throw naturally rose Lycanroc up a good deal among Ash's roster.
- Ash's Dragonite and Gengar were both very unexpected catches, to say the least, both because they were long-requested Pokémon fans wanted on his roster and because they were caught at the start of the Journeys series despite being fully-evolved powerhouses. Dragonite is a total cuddlebug with enormous battle prowess while Gengar is Ash's first-ever Ghost-type, so naturally they enjoy a lot of popularity.
- Continuing Journeys ' trend of giving Ash long-requested teammates, his Riolu quickly became a fan-favorite too. Ash's bond with it brings back the plot element of Ash being able to wield aura, while Riolu itself is a very battle-oriented Pokémon that due to its' inexperience can be used to give Ash feasible challenges without underselling Ash's own prowess as a trainer.
Greninja was effectively main character of Ash's Kalos team that series, and fro m the species the creators correctly predicted would become a Breakout Character. This seems too major to count.
Rowlet, Torracat, Meltan, and Lycanroc are the near entity of Ash team witch seems too major to count. Meltan was specially to promote the new Mon in the games. Lycanroc might count.
Dragonite, Gengar, and Riolu were the entity of Ash team when they achieved their popularity. Gengar and Riolu "giving Ash long-requested teammates" means they were supposed to be popular for such. Dragonite might count.
I've long wonder if any of Ash's team (save Charizard who codified the darkhorse traits) are too major characters to count as the seem like main characters. I'd make an exception for any of them minor enough to be Out of Focus / Put on a Bus in-series as opposed to the end of the season per the norm. Thoughts?
I asked Ensemble Darkhorse Cleanup
but was ignored.

open Paper Mario the Horror King Videogame
Can someone tell me why Paper Mario: the Origami King DOESN'T have its own Nightmare Fuel page? The game has a bunch of horrifying things that by all means SHOULD warrant its own Nightmare Fuel page, but for some reason it doesn't. (I think for some time it actually DID have it's own Nightmare fuel page, but now I can't find it.) Am I able to add it myself, or does someone else have to do it?
Edit: Wait, why can't I reply anymore?
Edited by SpideyopenRedeem trope and in-universe YMMV or trivia tropes Anime
I'm searching for a trope where the finale of a show (in-universe btw, the series is about acting) basically was hated by the audience, but redeemed itself with a good final episode.
And since it's a show about acting, I found other tropes that would fit, if only they weren't marked as YMMV or trivia tropes. Can they still be added to the main page then, since they are in-universe?
openDo Bathroom Search Excuse and Women's Mysteries really overlap?
Perhaps this should be in Is This an Example?, but I'm not talking about a specific example.
On the new trope Bathroom Search Excuse (which is when someone either asks to go to the bathroom but instead goes somewhere else or lies that they were just looking for the bathroom), it says that it can overlap with Women's Mysteries.
But the Women's Mysteries page says that it's defined as "stories, rituals, secrets, etc. which, for reasons of either magic or tradition, only women are permitted to know".
I know that women sometimes enter bathrooms to change tampons (being a woman myself) and I know about the Wondrous Ladies Room and that maybe she's implying she has Morning Sickness? Still odd, though.

Edited by PrincessPandaTropeopenI think Kizuna Ai's YMMV and Trivia pages need help
So I decided to take a look at Kizuna Ai's subpages after a long time of not having them updated personally. I had already edited the pages because in retrospect, a lot of the information regarding the 2019 upd8/activ8/"clones" debacle and the official confirmation of her voice actress became a Wall of Text and/or were placed in the wrong tropes.
However, some tropes and examples in those pages might still need second-hand confirmation from fellow tropers who are also into Vtubers, especially from other Kizuna Ai fans who know a lot of facts from the 2019 upd8/activ8/"clones" debacle. (Such questionable sentences and concerns are highlighted in bold-text).
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The channel has several notable fanbases outside of its origin country of Japan. Only time will tell if this repairs the damage done by the managing company.
(I feel like this statement can be rewritten, because it comes off as if the trope is now averted because of a controversy. Heck, is this last sentence even needed?)
- "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny: Kizuna Ai Codified the VTuber trend and gained rapid popularity as a result. Come the creation of multiple other standalone Vtubers and companies such as hololive and Nijisanji with their diverse cast of characters makes Kizuna suffer from standing out among other fans. The Ai clones debacle (including the loss of the original VA for Kizuna Ai) alienating pre-existing fans making matters worse.
(What is "the loss of the original VA for Kizuna Ai" referring to here? AFAIK, her original voice actress didn't retire, and in fact, even returned to voice her again. We need some further confirmation on this, because as it currently stands, that statement reeks of fake news.)
- Follow the Leader: Going in the other direction, the success of large VTuber groups like hololive, Nijisanji, Game Club Project and many others prompted a change in format to the channel by introducing Kizuna Ai clones voiced by different voice actresses (and, in the Chinese channel's case, a different language entirely). However, the drastic changes have just pushed fans towards the two groups.
(The last sentence is potholed to Epic Fail. Isn't Epic Fail supposed to be In-Universe only? What do we do here, Remove the entire sentence or just the link?)
- Money, Dear Boy: GUMI, the majority investor of Activ8 (the company managing the Kizuna Ai IP), are collectively of the opinion
that it ultimately doesn't matter who plays Kizuna Ai as long as the franchise and merchandise keep the money rolling in. This is ultimately due to the fact that the management company and investors get a bigger cut of the profits than if Nozomi Kasuga (Ai's first voice actor) had made her debut as a real person rather than a Virtual YouTuber. Ironically, the reverse was true in the early days of the channel, which may have contributed to GUMI's views in the first place. Their mentality might have actually worked had they not subtly tried to spurn Nozomi from doing her usual Let's Play content — perhaps unsurprisingly, Activ8 ended up publicizing a loss of ¥675 million
a few months after this came to light. VTuber projects that sprung up afterwards, such as hololive and Nijisanji, learned not to be so hostile to their talent for success.
(If this talked about the time when the company lost millions of Yen, I think the "afterwards" part is misleading or false because hololive and Nijisanji existed before that time when activ8 suffered deficit. Also, can this be trimmed down?)
- Reclusive Artist: The whole gimmick is that Kizuna Ai is supposedly an artificial intelligence that makes vlogs, skits and Let's Play videos in order to connect with humans, so the existence and identities of the humans behind it are kept secret to maintain the illusion. However, some incidents play with this trope.
- Ai sounded like Luna and vice-versa in their respective April Fool's videos, and only those videos.
- This even carried into the Azur Lane collab where all the splash art of her playable versions only had "Kizuna Ai" under voice actor.
- Averted with the English dub of Ingress, where Ai-chan's brief cameo was played by Cristina Vee.
- She sometimes mentions that she has staff members. In her Let's Play for Resident Evil 2 (Remake), fans think that Ai's staff plays the game because her aim significantly improved, but she, explains that even if she has a staff, she herself plays the games. In Ai-chan's "I have an assistant now!!
" vlog, she even casually mentions having a staff team and some of them can be heard laughing offscreen.
- On 24 April 2020, it's officially confirmed that Nozomi Kasuga is the original voice for Ai-chan, and she's now on advisory role
for the new Kizuna AI Co., Ltd.
(I trimmed the Reclusive Artist examples already but I think Kizuna Ai is an odd example of this after all the incidents that happened. As stated in the first part, the whole gimmick of a Vtuber is that the streamer's real identity is a secret. However, as stated in the last bullet, Kizuna Ai herself revealed her real identity. Now, does she still count for the trope, or not?)
openDistrict 9 Complete Monster entry
The YMMV.District 9 page lists under Complete Monster:
- Obesandjo, The Evil Cripple wheelchair bound leader of the Nigerian gangsters, sets up his racket in District 9 and distributes cat food to the aliens, which is like a drug that keeps them hooked. He also operates "interspecies prostitution" rings, offering the prawns human women. The worst, however, is when he has innocent aliens butchered, so he can eat their flesh and gain their power. When he captures Wikus, he fully plans to cut off his Prawn parts and eat them himself.
As far as I can tell, the character being disabled is not relevant to the story. Can that part be removed?
openPage split: Characters.SentinelsOfTheMultiverseVillains feedback
- Link: Characters.Sentinels Of The Multiverse Villains
- Discussion: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/remarks.php?trope=Characters.SentinelsOfTheMultiverseVillains#comment-121611
So there's a bit of dispute over how this page split should be done, you can see the debate between Spectral Time and myself on the Discussion page. It's currently listed alphabetically, and I just feel like there should be subcategorization, because there's 30+ folders, and depending on how the franchise develops beyond the original card game, there could potentially be more to come.
I think there are a few somewhat natural break points — the original game was divided into expansions, and in the mechanics of the card game some of the villains are fought on their own with their own minions while others are fought as part of a team of other villains. Some villains have decks for both, but the latter only appear in the second-to-last two expansions. Similarly, OblivAeon and his Scions are fought as a kind of massive Final Boss for the game as a whole, and have some very different rules as well. And then there are Nemeses, which are one-off cards which appear in other team villains' decks but don't have decks of their own so far (and aren't likely to get them, as the card game is officially complete at this time).
Spectral Time doesn't like the above ideas, as he thinks they require readers to possess additional information. I feel like it's just the opposite, though — it's information we're giving them, not information they need to have in advance. There were two other editors who had voted to split by expansion, but I felt like maybe it would be better to put this to ATT and get some more opinions/suggestions and then put it to a vote of sorts.
So the suggestions so far:
- Leave the page in alphabetical order
- Reorganize the page by expansion
- Move the team villains, nemeses, and OblivAeon to their own page, leaving the solo villains sorted alphabetically
- Some combination/variation of the above
Spectral is not necessarily in favour of alphabetical order but hasn't liked any of the other ideas so far. Any other suggestions or ideas based on how other Characters pages do it are welcome. Thanks for your help. Please feel free to ask for clarification.
Edited by Unsungopen Troper possibly adding YMMV to her own work
I noticed that PrincessPandaTrope added a trope entry
where she wrote about the art of GothNebula in the first person, saying "Most of my Amy Rose's and Blaze the Cat's alternate outfits" bare the midriff.
This indicates that she is GothNebula. Not a problem in itself, of course; adding tropes to your own creator page is allowed. But she's been adding YMMV tropes to the same creator's page, so we need an IP check, is what I'm saying.
EDIT: Pierpitcher pointed out, correctly, that since GothNebula has no account, an IP check won't help much. Ridiculous of me not to realize that myself, really...
