openPersistent complaining on YMMV.CrashBandicoot4ItsAboutTime.
Psi001
has been constantly adding entries complaining about characterization in YMMV.Crash Bandicoot 4 Its About Time. Among their entries include a Cliché Storm entry ranting about flanderization of the characters, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character and Badass Decay complaining about Crash being stupid compared to Coco despite it always been part of his character, and an Audience-Alienating Premise entry that reads more like a general rant about the game (while the game itself definitely has flaws, Psi spends more time ranting about Positive Discrimination like his other entries). Also, a Badass Decay entry on YMMV.Crash Bandicoot is a huge Wall of Text complaining about Coco suffering Positive Discrimination which misuses Drama-Preserving Handicap and outright states We Want Our Jerk Back!.
I'd send them a PM, but I've already had several arguments with them about their Single-Issue Wonk on other sites that inevitably go nowhere, so I don't want to talk with them again lest we have another argument.
openThe thin line between webcomic and web-manga
This is an issue that has been raised several times over many years and involved works that I edited heavily (for example, Daily Lives of High School Boys and Kotoura-san), that is, how to handle manga that started online.
I know we have a consensus that an online preview, by itself, does not change the work's namespace, which is why the two works named above are still in the Manga/ namespace, because from day one they are intended to be published on paper, but released online-first.
What I am confused are works like I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying and I Think Our Son Is Gay. They were originally serialized on Pixiv (and in the latter case, Twitter as well). However, they are collected and published on paper eventually. Should they be Manga-namespaced, or they should—following the precedent of Hetalia: Axis Powers—be put into Webcomic/ ? Or even in Web Original/ like Getsuyoubi No Tawawa?
A third case is even more complicated. Wasteful Days of High School Girls was originally published as webcomic (on Nico Nico Douga), but eventually no longer published that way; most of the series is published in anthologies like traditional manga. How should it be namespaced?
Edited by SamCurtopenPlease help me compose a note Web Original
This might be yet another futile attempt, but I would like to enforce "Please state the character(s)" in Characters.SCP Foundation (the skips sheets, other sheets are doing fine). One major problem with them is that people troping someone else instead of the character in the header.
For example, SCP-5000 used to be filled with tropes belong to the Foundation (which has its own sheet) despite the SCP-5000 is (from the article itself) "a non-functional mechanical suit identified within its internal schematics as an 'Absolute Exclusion Harness' designed by the SCP Foundation."
This is likely stem from how the site march on with style. While many articles are named after the object itself, but some don't. (Although this isn't something new, although it didn't cause problem before because at least the object will be the center of the story. But many new articles on SCP Wiki are now a tale in skip guise.) For examples, said SCP-5000 is called "Why" while SCP-4000 is called "Taboo", neither is the name of the object. So I guess that's how tropers think "Anything is ok if they appears in said story.", and so we got purely narrative tropes list in character sheet (For example, here's one from Characters.SCP Foundation SC Ps 3000 To 3999:
- Apocalyptic Log: Most of what the foundation knows about the interior of the store comes from a journal carried by a man who spent several months inside before managing to escape, only to get killed by one of the staff shortly after.
Mind you, SCP-3008 object is an IKEA store as Eldritch Location. The journey is written by a man trapped in it but not the direct result of its anomaly, so the trope is clearly not belong to the IKEA store itself.)
I did add some "Tropes associated with X" to handful of skips entries because I think it should resolve some issue. People should at least aware of who or what they're troping and it can cover other one-shot character who's only has major role in one skip (for example, the aforementioned SCP-5000 has a good chunk of the story being about a character called Pietro Wilson who used that suit even if he isn't skip itself). The 3008 above? Troping "people trapped inside" (or the "store and people trapped inside") would allow that misplaced trope to stay with minor edit. Plus, that's how other sheet done. When troping a Stage 2 of video games, we add "Tropes associated with mini-boss" and "Tropes associated with stage boss" if they're stand out.
Unfortunately, it isn't done to all entries yet because, as noted, not all articles are named after the character and so I need to look up the article first (and with articles getting longer these days...). Also, even when it's done with the character's name clearly stated, some people just ignore it anyway and that's discouraging.
But lets try a gain, put a big bolded notification of "Please state the character before troping." on the top of skip sheet and see if it would help. Although I cannot write a good message and need help here.
Edited by KuruniopenIs ExpositoryHairstyles a trope, or an index? ... EDIT: Are we done cleaning?
I'm on a bent to do some TRS Wick Cleaning, and my focus is Expository Hairstyles, right now, since it's super short.
Expository Hairstyles is used as a trope in at least Motherly Side Plait, and calls itself a Super-Trope, but it looks like an index.
Is it an index or a trope? Or is it a trope that has effectively an Examplesectionectomy?
There's 33 wicks
left. Should we work to remove all of them, or is it basically as clean as it can be?
openTroper Can't Grammar
Hollywill06 is making some pretty huge mistakes. I caught them with their Timeline.Gunners Genocide page, which...sort of speaks for itself, both when it comes to grammar issues and general lack of wiki understanding. note the page has been cutlisted; Mightymewtron copy pasted the text in a comment. The strange thing is, they've flown under the radar since at least February of this year, and scrolling down the list, yeah, none of their edits are passable- due to both grammar mistakes and other issues, like formatting problems
, a lack of wiki words
, and stub pages with a context issue
. For those who don't feel like clicking wicks, their grammar issues include:
- Lack of punctuation
- Randomly capitalized words
- Randomly uncapitalized words
- A complete lack of proper wiki formatting, in good number of examples
- Run-on sentences
- Generally confusing / nonsensical phrasing
I sent a notifier today but for problems this severe I'm not sure waiting around is a good idea.
Edited by WarJay77opendoes this entree fit the trope Live Action TV
hello, I'm new to your site and I don't know if these scenes would be classified as a balcony wooing scene https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BalconyWooingScene
or not under your site's rules. they are from the tv series How I Met Your Mother. I am arguing that not only are they balcony wooing scenes but that they are the best balcony wooing scene ever! I'm frankly kind of annoyed and amused they weren't already included as I feel they were a pivotal part of that series identity.
the first scene is from season one episode one "pilot" after the protagonist ted meets a girl named robin in his local bar he takes her out on a date at a restaurant the following day. after their date is interrupted by robin being called away for her job and ted feeling he may have messed the date up he discided to steal the blue french horn that robin commented on in the restaurant to use as a grand romantic gesture, he rings up to her apartment and she sticks her head out the window where upon ted offers it up to her as a grand romantic gesture.
here's the clip of the scene from youtube https://youtu.be/qUWoWAA8M3o you
can also search " How I Met Your Mother – Pilot clip6"
I would argue that this is a wooing scene as he brought the blue french horn as a grand romantic gesture. as mentioned in the description of balcony wooing scenes the Grand Romantic Gesture is a trope associated with balcony wooing scenes, they may have not shared any words like you would see in traditional balcony wooing scenes but the gesture was more than enough to convey teds message making talk meiningless IMO.
the second scene is from the season one finally (episode 22) "Come On" Ted shows up at his now ex-girlfriend Robin's apartment he calls out to her and she opens her window. they start a conversation and she then asks why he was there he replied "Because I made it rain!".
the reason why this is relevant is because he spent half a day performing a rain dance to make it rain so she would have to stay home and not go camping with a potential love rival after she rejected his first advance.
he goes up to her apartment and they embrace each other. after a cut scene ted narrates how that was how he and Robin got together.
here's the clip of the scene from youtube https://youtu.be/y8fTcd_ZeJk you
can also search "How I Met Your Mother - Ending of Season 1 Finale"here's an alternative version https://youtu.be/TIGU1GWy-pI you
can also search "Ted and Robin Getting back Together (How I Met Your Mother)"
I would argue that this was a balcony wooing scene because he called out to her and they had a conversation through the window ledge not to mention he offered the rain as a grand romantic gesture. all these are traits associated with balcony wooing scenes.
the third scene is from the final episode of How I Meet Your Mother series (season 9 episode 24) for context this takes place 25 years after the first two scenes. After being told by his kids and Ted realizing it for himself, that he is still in love with Robin. Ted decided to show up at Robin's apartment with the blue french horn that he gave to her after their first date leading to the mirroring of the events of the pilot episode.
here's the clip of the scene from youtube https://youtu.be/nW82fRNJc84 you
can also search "How I Met Your Mother - Ending Scene"
all I have to say is all these scenes individually would likely be dismissed as an insignificant homage to the balcony wooing scene because of their short time shown but combined it's irrefutable that they are significant enough to be included in the list of balcony wooing scenes.
I have gone ahead and posted them already in the style of the others around it. I had problems formating it so it's not properly displayed though. I would like to add the links to the videos showing the scenes but I don't know if that's allowed or really how to do it in the first place. I welcome you to edit/fix them if you wish but please don't delete them without explaining why here first. thank you.
openEdit War on Sonic X: Dark Chaos (and also rudeness)
PrincessPandaTrope Edit-Warred and reverted an edit I made on the Laconic page for Sonic X: Dark Chaos to the earlier version she wrote, with the motivation "Oh, you're here again. Isn't the original okay?"
I figured that instead of joining the Edit War, I'd ask all you fine folks which version you prefer.
And to answer her question of what's wrong: The original uses "crapsack" as an adjective and not a noun, which as far as I know is wrong. That's why I used "crappy" instead. Also, it's a bit too long, so I removed one "really" from "really, really, really". This is supposed to be the Laconic version, after all.
EDIT: In retrospect, I realize that I should have inserted all this in the actual page edit reason. Stupid of me not to. (Also, I probably should have shortened it more, but that's a different story.)
Link
to the edit I mentioned.
SECOND EDIT: Also, she corrected an entry of Black Comedy Rape with the reason "That wasn't played for laughs. What the fuck is wrong with you?!?!"
As far as I know, the correction itself is completely appropriate, but the rudeness...

Bittersweet Ending: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP
Is this an acceptable method for editing here?
openQuestion regarding a fanfic that exists.... but not in a form you expect
While browsing through the Tv Tropes, I have found entries for a MLP fanfic called "Ancient Sins", and it does have a page here
There is just one problem: the page itself is completely bereft of tropes: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/AncientSins
Plus, while the fanfic does sort of exists, it is all so far, per my searches, just a wiki: https://custom-characters.fandom.com/wiki/Custom_characters_Wiki
There is no actual written narrative fanfic yet (outside of the wiki entries that detail histories and also details of characters)
What to do here?
openLego Marvel Superheores Game nightmare fuel Videogame

openSamus Aran from Metroid: Soldier or Warrior? Videogame
With regards to the trope Soldier vs. Warrior there is a list of distinguished soldiers and warriors and clashing ideologies listed as examples. If I may submit a question to the more well-read and better-researched Tropers for discussion and consideration:
Is the protagonist of the Metroid series, Samus Aran, as she is currently portrayed in the playable games of the franchise, considered better fitting the Soldier archetype, or the Warrior archetype? Or neither?
I understand that part of her backstory, as depicted in titles such as Other M, as well as in media outside of video games (such as the e-Manga) does place her as a soldier in the Galactic Federation army. However, Other M also depicts that she does get to be a bit headstrong and doubting of orders, with the example given regarding the tragedy of Ian Malkovich's sacrifice by a command decision from Samus's C.O. She may have questioned his order - and her internal monologue reflects this as well - but doesn't disobey his order at all. In this regard, she does - or did - lean towards Soldier.
However, after leaving the Federation, the English canon tells us that she became a "bounty hunter", which we can interpret as just becoming a freelancer and occasional contract mercenary. In Japan, the generally-accepted "closest" translation is "Space Warrior", as she is marked among an elite class of freelancer specializing in missions few can pull off, and in being an expert combatant. However, based on what's in the Soldier vs. Warrior trope page, it doesn't seem like she fits the Warrior archetype much at all. She doesn't really do it for the glory, or to aggrandize herself, or as some test of strength or out of a sense of competition.
But at the same time, she doesn't currently still fit the Soldier role either. She says on occasion that she works alone, by choice, and hasn't worked under direct authority from military C.O.s since leaving the service, with the two exceptions being in Other M and in Metroid Fusion.
So is Samus an example of a zigzagging of this trope? Or some strange deconstruction of it? Or not in this index at all? I'd like to get a well-researched answer, as I just lack the understanding and the nuances of Tropology to really get how to go about answering this.
Thank you ahead of time!

Are In-Universe examples allowed on Similarly-Named Works? The example I had in mind was Girls With Low Self-Esteem and Families With Low Self-Esteem from Arrested Development.

Edited by DreamScrapeopenKaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi cleanup required? Anime
I mentioned this in the Winter Anime 2021 thread, I have not read the light novels or manga. So I didn't want to make changes to the page myself.
I got kind of a skeevy/immature vibe from how parts of this page
is written.
Specifically the "Let the party begin." part and basically all of the times Karmic Rape is potholed. For a specific example see the Karmic Rape trope. It just feels like the article is tacitly approving of those actions.
The thing is, I'm not sure if this is against the wiki policy, or if it should be left as is.
openDo we write that Elliot Page is non-binary?
As I mentioned in a previous post, Elliot Page has come out as transgender, and his pronouns are he/him and they/them. However, many call him non-binary even though he himself never used that term about himself (to the best of my knowledge.
I removed the term non-binary from his page, but it was added back with the explanation that "GLAAD has stated that they are non-binary, so I’ll take their word on it
."
However, in the public statement by Elliot Page that GLAAD use as their source, Page never once uses the term non-binary.
Thoughts?
Edited by MichaelKatsuroopenCleaning up a Nightmare Fuel page. Web Original
The Nightmare Fuel page for Marble Hornets has a couple entries that focus more on the larger Slenderverse/Slender Man Mythos/Slenderman as a concept, rather than the series itself. I'm wondering if it's a legal move to remove them or edit them way down, given that they aren't entirely relevant. There's also a few entries talking about extra-canonical things like the DVDs and ways real life might make the series scarier, and I'm not sure those should be there either. Any thoughts on what can or should be cut?
Edited by AnomalousEvolutionopen Potential Nazi Apologia?
On YMMV.Extra Credits, this comment was added by Supreme Interceptor under Critical Research Failure regarding this video
:
- Despite what Dan might have you believe about every last soldier in the Nazi military being Nazis and German, not all of them were Nazis or even German. The Nazis had plenty of formations made up of non-German conscripts and auxiliaries that fought under their command including White Russians
, Serbians
, Finns
, and Armenians
. And even more than this, it is a well-known fact that Hitler made an effort to recruit Muslims
from Eastern European ethnic groups like Albanians, Tatars and Bosniaks into the Schutzstaffel's ranks
.
The video itself is controversial, to say the least, but this seems like both A) misuse of Critical Research Failure, as the topic wasn't related much to the video anyway, and B) potentially trying to whitewash the Nazis, saying that they weren't that racist. Is it just me, or does this seem problematic?
open Slow-motion grocery items dropping Film
What do you call this trope: The unsuspecting character, ofttimes a mafioso, is innocently carrying his groceries out of the store, or into his home, etc and is then ambushed by a gun-wielding assailant. The assault itself is typically off-screen while the camera instead goes into slow-motion, focuses on the groceries (fruit, produce, raw pasta, etc) slowly tumbling and rolling away on the ground, and which might be followed up by a puddle of blood then pooling near the spilled groceries. The music accompanying the slow-motion trope is operatic or classical music coming to a crescendo as this little scene plays out.
Edited by icebergopenFanfic trope page is connected to actual trope Western Animation
Could you please help me? I was creating a fanfic trope page but the name of the story happened to be La Resistance and that's a trope itself. So, now it connects the fanfic trope page with the actual trope itself. Is there a way to fix that?

So, in my review of several Super Sentai pages, I've noticed a few times a character in the group get called either The Smart Lancer or The Big Lancer (with links to relevant Lancer/Smart Guy/Big Guy pages). It's making me wonder if maybe these 'Lancer combos' should become either full-fledge pages of their own or maybe just side notes on the Lancer page itself. I just wanted to discuss this before launching any Trope pages.
