openPotential misuse of UnfortunateImplications
I found this edit on the Live-Action TV page for What An Idiot:
- Season 8 of the American version of The Amazing Race provided a rare funny example. The season was an experiment with family teams of four rather than teams of two of different relationships. The only non-white family was a black family whose surname happened to be, well, Black. Cue the Cringe Comedy of them always being called "the Black family" both by the other teams and by the show itself. They were the first team eliminated, so at least the unintentional hilarity didn't last.
Should it be removed, given that it doesn't credit an offical and professional source?
open MemeticBadass.ChuckNorris
There's a subpage for MemeticBadass.Chuck Norris but it's not about Chuck Norris himself, but other people who are memetic in the same way (with "facts" about them). Can this go somewhere else?
openDoctor Who WMG - guessing for future episodes on episode-specific pages Live Action TV
How do we handle tropers adding WMG for future episodes/seasons of a show to an episode-specific WMG page?
I'm specifically looking at WMG.Doctor Who 2022 CEN The Power Of The Doctor, which accompanies the equivalent recap page. Now that episode has screened (at least in the UK), all of the existing WMG has been marked as Jossed, Confirmed, not addressed in this episode etc.
However, the final cliffhanger leads into the three 2023 specials, which are very likely to get their own recap pages. And we're now getting tropers adding new WMG about the plots of those specials and the possible payoff for the cliffhanger.
My initial thinking is that this isn't a problem in the short term ... but as soon as those new episodes go out, adding any Jossed/Confirmed response to those guesses would be a problem. It's a Spoilers Off page, but even if they were tagged, my understanding is that a WMG page for episode #22 of a series shouldn't include any spoilers for episode #23 onwards?
So should we leave the WMGs about the next batch of episodes there indefinitely, move them once a more appropriate WMG page is created, or immediately delete them from the page?
(I did delete one on this basis, explaining my thinking in the edit reason - but more are now being added and I'm second-guessing myself)
Thanks!
Edited by Mrph1openKavorka Man Image deleted
Visiting the Kavorka Man page, I had noticed there was an image for it and it's gone now. According to this part of the edit history
, Solsun ended up deleting the image and didn't leave an edit note. And looking at Image Pickin' and Image Pickin' Morgue, I haven't seen anything discussing this being deleted and the page source itself still has the "Image picked by Image Pickin' notice, don't change or remove without starting a new thread". I don't really go on Image Pickin' (mentioning just in case I missed something), but I do wonder if it should be restored back on the page?
openDoes crosswicking the page of a work you made count as Auto-Erotic Troping/Self-promotion?
I know crosswicking is pretty important for pages to thrive and all and it's usually the responsibility of the page creator to do so, but if you create the page for a work that you made and it needs to be crosswicked, does it count as Auto-Erotic Troping and/or self-promotion (which IIRC isn't allowed outside of that one self-promotion thread)?
I'm asking because crosswicking is one of the main ways to get a page noticed and I'd contemplated making a page for a fanfic of mine once or twice. Because of how it makes a page get noticed and thus the work itself, I wondered if it counted as Auto-Erotic Troping/self-promotion.
openQuestion About Fanfic Recs
Hello, am I allowed to rescind a fanfic recommendation I made because the fic itself was removed from Archive of Our Own. I see no point in leaving the recommendation there since there's no way to read the fic anymore.
I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be but I feel safer clarifying first.
openSilverlady
I have a few concerns about Silverlady's edits, especially where the TLP is concerned. I'll start off with their wiki contributions, though.
- Back in August, I sent a grammar notifier for this edit
. Notably, while they made other edits there, those two were never even touched. Grammar issues are still an issue with them
even now.
- They have a very
consistent
issue
with
context
, though IDK if any notifiers have been sent for those yet. However, let's put a pin in this.
- They also have an issue with trope misuse. For example, this
Crapsaccharine World example massively exaggerates both how idyllic and how awful the town is for Belle and her father. This Too Dumb to Live example doesn't make clear what's happening
, as it implies Belle attacks the fake beast after he was impaled, at which point... where's the danger? Etc.
All of these issues can be seen on the TLP, and while there, they've been told about these issues and yet haven't made an effort to fix them. Additionally, they're one of the tropers who keep posting new examples in the middle of discussion, which means they're ignoring everything that says there might be an issue here... something proven by their voting history
, which proves they hat just about anything (save for three random drafts that, ironically, everyone else liked, and no they didn't explain it). note and if you're wondering how I'm getting this info, TLP history is public, you just have to add "?for=username" to the URL
Here's some of their recent TLP post history:
- Serious Hero, Comical Sidekick
has them posting a bunch of examples that, as Amatheiu pointed out, don't fit the description. Additionally, this came in the middle of a discussion over if the trope was covered.
- Diabolical Deer
: Poor grammar/spelling in their example, low context as to what the Moose's plan is and how evil they actually are, and using the trope as "evil deer character" when the trope at that point was specifically about subverted innocence and not just '"evil deer".
- Involuntary Servitude
: Multiple examples starting at the linked post, many with poor grammar and others that don't describe the servitude itself, instead of just saying "they were made a slave".
- Misplaced Mindfulness
: In this one I just can't see the trope at all tbh... It's just a character making a mistake and falling into guilt.
- Children's Covert Coterie
has them again adding something that doesn't fit.
- Comically Tiny Wings
had them learn what a ZCE was, but don't be fooled. They were told on the 17th, but these issues are still showing up in their edits and in the other examples, with the Recap. The Owl House S 3 E 1 Thanks To Them one being on the 18th and the Involuntary Servitude ones being on the 20th and 21st.
- Jumping backwards quite a bit, Diagnosis: Silence
is their first TLP post according to the history... and even back then they had trouble with following the definition and was called out for it.
Now, obviously not all of their posts and edits are bad, but these are some recurring patterns that they're falling into even after being called out. They're clearly going back to threads because they constantly notice when their examples weren't added, so there's no real justification for not learning yet to read the descriptions thoroughly and not stopping to engage with any ongoing discussions. This is, of course, without getting into their grammar and context issues, which, let's be clear...
openHow to add punctuation to a page
Title is pretty self-explanatory. I created two new trope pages for these Owl House fanfics, and I'm not sure how to change the titles because there's punctuation in both of them.

openTo-Do-List venue/forum for images that need replacements
Basically, you find a page image that doesn't look good for some reason, and would like to point out that it needs replacement, but you don't currently have the time to upload the best replacement, so you bring it up somewhere for others to fix... Is there a place for that scenario, a.k.a. a forum-based to-do-list for images?
... Or I might as well bring up the image in question here, from SIE Santa Monica Studio:

The company logo is fine in the site's Night Vision mode, but you cannot read the text in normal/light mode in the Creator page itself because the font color blends with the gray background color. Shouldn't this have a black background instead for consistency?
Edited by DanteVinopen Edit War on Character page of Turning Red Western Animation
Troper Rom Watt added back the Hero Antagonist example for Turning Red for the character Ming despite the majority of Ming’s actions not really coming off as heroic and more of a detriment to Mei’s (the main character) personal growth. Ming was an obstacle and a Karen who inconvenienced others with her selfish actions (she assaulted a security guard that was just doing his job and even destroyed a dome and risking lives all because Mei wanted to attend a concert). This doesn’t sound like a Hero Antagonist at all. She was far from heroic and she had to realize that she was the villain at the end of the movie. I wanted to delete the example, but I want to avoid an Edit War.
Edited by MsCC22openOn Scorpider77 Videogame
Scorpider77 seems like a good troper in all respects, except one; he seems to have this wonk over Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam 2 and keeps talking about how everyone is clamoring for it and linking to its page.
There's just one problem: the game doesn't exist. While his non Mario edits are fine, anything pertaining to Mario (Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and YMMV.Mario And Luigi Paper Jam, and YMMV.Mario Plus Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, among others) keeps having him throw in references to this nonexistent game, culminating in him making a since-cut page for it on the 11th of this month.
He also DMed me a link to a tweet that allegedly shows the proof of this clamoring (along with saying the game exists and Nintendo hasn't found the time to reveal it, stated with no proof whatsoever), except it's an analytics link - which can only be seen by the person who made the tweet. So he's shilling both himself and a nonexistent game to the detriment of factual information.
openWhen to know a page needs cleanup? Web Original
I've been looking over the page for Hamsters Paradise, as I've been following that particular work, and it seems to me that it could use a little help. Mostly in the grammar department, maybe with the spoiler tagging as well (At the moment it's just the stuff related to the original sketches that spoilered, though it's a little inconsistent. I'm also wondering if it's worth spoilering entries related to the Harmster and Baywulf sagas since they're a little heavier on plot details than the rest of the work).
At the same time, I'm not entirely sure if the issues are great enough that it needs a Cleanup topic, or any discussion at all as opposed to just fixing it myself. Is there a good way to know where to draw the line?
openAre Nursery Rhymes tropable works?
Two parter, here:
- Do we have established precedent for a Nursery Rhyme itself to be a tropable work? (Note: The contents of Nursery Rhyme itself are trope examples when an in-universe rhyme is discussed or contained in the context of a larger work)
- If we have such precedent, where should we namespace a page? Currently, the closest I can see on Namespace is Myth/ (due to the comment about oral traditions) but that just seems wrong somehow...
open Edit to Fate/Stay Night character page constitutes vandalism? Videogame
In this edit
for the character page for Saber from Fate/stay night, user SteelDumpling replaced all instances of "Altria" (the character's official English name as of Fate/Grand Order) with "Artoria" (an alternate localization that is preferred by the fans and has been used in some localizations prior to Type-Moon coming down against it), even in instances where this is inaccurate.
I do not want to start an edit war so I have messaged the person requesting they revert the edit. In the event they do not, should I just do it myself?

openA page for Ask Mario Web Original
So, I was thinking that there should be a page for the YouTube series "Ask Mario". However, I think that would be hard to make all by myself even if I started the page myself, which I could. So, if I do make this page, I would appreciate any help anyone else can offer, be it trope examples or subpages, which this page will definitely need. Please let me know your thoughts and thank you in advance.
Edited by LaughsWithGophersopenTroper with worrisome obsession with check list
Just post here for the record since it look like one-time problem.
temus added this massive check list
to Fantasy Kitchen Sink. I commented it out (along with other two similar entries), citing Wordcruft and Zero-Context Example (also sent them a ZCE notifier) because the check list doesn't really say anything about the work itself. Still, making that huge check list strike me as unusual.
openSalvaged Story entries Film
On the YMMV page for the Black Panther film, several entries under Author's Saving Throw were moved to Salvaged Story:
- Following in the footsteps of the Vulture, the Grandmaster, and Hela, Killmonger was chosen as a deliberate attempt to create a sympathetic and memorable MCU bad guy after a string of widely-criticized and forgettable Generic Doomsday Villains. Given the amount of "Killmonger Was Right" memes currently circulating around the web, it's probably safe to say they succeeded and then some. Much the same goes for Klaue who became a fan-favorite as a Laughably Evil companion of Killmonger.
- The filmmakers have gone out of their way to avoid the continuity problems that have plagued the MCU. While the Marvel movies are widely praised, they have been criticized for Continuity Lock-Out and focusing more on setting up sequels. Black Panther functions as a self-contained story with almost no references to the previous film or characters outside of the news broadcast and Ross briefly recapping T'Challa's arc in Captain America: Civil War and the post-credits scene involving Bucky Barnes in Wakanda, thereby making it more accessible for casual fans.
- In the comics, M'Baku the Man-Ape is a savage, brutish Scary Black Man who dresses up as a gorilla, which brings to mind uncomfortable racist caricatures comparing black people to monkeys and apes. This movie doesn't use the "Man-Ape" moniker and downplays the gorilla imagery, while hitting him with a dose of Adaptational Heroism to turn him into an Anti-Villain who undergoes a Heel–Face Turn.
The problem is that none of these seem to fit the trope's current definition (which is about a problematic story element being explained) but rather focus on the film avoiding problems that previous entries had.
Edited by Javertshark13

Given that they are now recurring characters in the franchise, another troper saw fit to move Glen and Glenda to the main Character page for Child's Play, which brought the use of their now former pronouns within their entries to my attention. I saw fit to change the pronouns used in the entries, but found myself unsure whether or not certain tropes should also be removed, given that Glen and Glenda do respectively identify as male and female in certain parts of Seed of Chucky (though they no longer do anymore).
The edits/tropes are as follows:
For Glen:
For Glenda:
Should these tropes be removed, be changed, or should they stay given that - once again - they each respectively identified as male and female in Seed (plus Glenda did indeed repeat Like Mother, Like Daughter word-for-word like the edits says)?
