openUsers keep ignoring NREP rule regarding Harsher in Hindsight
A few days ago, a major controversy regarding the firing of a voice actor from SMG4 has resulted in some users putting an Harsher in Hindsight entry on this page.
On Feb 28th 2024 at 10:33:12 AM
, Luigi Kart DS added the following edit:
- There's a moment in "SMG4 Are You Okay?" where SMG4 enslaves a bunch of Toads to make content for him, and is cancelled when SMG3 exposes him. A year later, Glitch Productions found itself in hot water when numerous former employees spoke out about the work environment
.
Later that same day
, I removed it after consulting with the hindsight cleanup thread, because it was agreed that the controversy is still ongoing.
On Feb 28th 2024 at 11:22:49 PM
, Tropers/yoko6969 added a similar entry:
- One of the scene from "[1]" includes SMG 4 manipulating Toads to make videos, while SMG 3 is recording an "SMG 4 Exposed" video. Replace SMG 4 with Kevin, and we can get the main problem of Glitch Productions which is mismanagement from the CEO himself
.
Further edits were simply format fixes and did not remove the entry.
On Feb 29th 2024 at 3:10:49 PM
, I also removed that entry as well, citing that the event is still ongoing and thus an entry is not needed right now.
Later that same day
, Electric Logan also added an entry towards the ongoing controversy:
- One of the 2020 Collab skits had Boopkins be beaten up after his awful singing. That ends up being justified after his voice actor, Kevin, would be ousted for mistreating former employees, specifically animators, of Glitch Productions.
(To be clear, SMG 4 was not part of the allegations & is safe)
Needless to say, I think we should reprimand the users over here who keep adding entries towards an ongoing event while also ignoring the No Recent Examples, Please! rule and probably lock the page for good measure, since it's beginning to attract negative attention.
Edited by Siegfried1337openWhere to put some LMM examples? Literature
Lucy Maud Montgomery's page
has a few examples from the Chronicles of Avonlea books. It's specified that all examples from books that have their own pages don't count. The thing is, the Chronicles books are explicitly in the world of Anne of Green Gables, even if Anne only makes a few cameos. So what do we do?
Option 1. Move the Chronicles examples from Maud's page to the Anne page and add a note to Maud's page listing all 11/12 (it's complicated) books in the Anne series, all three Emily books, etc.
Option 2. Split off all miscellaneous Maud short stories into their own page, including the Chronicles books, preserving Maud's page for the authoress herself and recurring tropes only.
openVisualNovel/VideoGame split on trope pages. Videogame
If I want to crosswick/add a Visual Novel example in a trope page and it doesn't have a Visual Novels folder or subpage, should I create it myself, or should I put the VN under Video Games?
In the case that the Video Games folder already contains some VNs, is it better to move them to a new Visual Novels folder, or to leave it like that and add my example there?
Edited by animuacidopenPage Revert for Lobo
Recently, the page for Characters.DC Comics Lobo (which used to focus just on Lobo) has been turned into a redirect for Characters.Lobo (which is for Lobo's supporting cast), presumably as part of the new policy regarding Character-Specific Pages.
However, it seems like the actual content for the former page was not moved at all, meaning there are absolutely no tropes listed for Lobo. His character folder links to his character page, but because of the redirect it now just links to itself.
Can I either a) get a page revert for Characters.DC Comics Lobo or b) just have the content that used to be on Characters.DC Comics Lobo moved to Characters.Lobo?
Edited by chasemaddiganopenFemale protagonist from P3P Videogame
So I was on the Persona 3 YMMV section and came across this entry, edited by Key Will Jay:
- The female main character herself is rather divisive. Some love her inclusion for providing an interesting "what if" scenario (and with the main theme of Portable being the butterfly effect, this also fits) and for her personality contrasting with the male main character while still keeping the "masking feelings" theme. They may also like how some of the less interesting Social Links get replaced with S.E.E.S. members. Others see her as unnecessary and believe she ruins the game's themes of overcoming despair and accepting death with said alternate scenario and personality, and dislike how SEES is made obviously friendlier in her route (a criticism fans of older titles sometimes level at newer titles in general). The memes and exposure surrounding her also induce Hype Backlash for non-fans and those that have played the console version but do not try Portable, calling her overrated. It was bad enough that when an alleged lead regarding a theoretical remake mentioned cutting out Portable content (which turned to be reality per the reveal of Reload), the fanbase split between those calling it a worst-case scenario and those celebrating the removal.
I’m not as active in the fandom but do people really fight over the female protagonist? Because I’ve never seen much divide over her. In fact, I’ve only seen people express their disappointment of her being excluded from Reload.
Edited by Superdude96openPosting a link to content you've created
Hi. I just recently published a video on YouTube
that provides comprehensive coverage of all the known Dub Name Changes, Sudden Name Changes, and Inconsistent Spellings of the LEGO Adventurers toyline. I had hoped for this to be a useful resource for LEGO fans and I was considering linking to it on the toyline's article and/or the characters subpage, i.e. "For more in-depth coverage of all alternate names and their original sources, see this video."
However, I get the impression that this might not be proper etiquette and could be perceived as shameless self-promotion, which is definitely frowned upon. On one hand: yes, I am promoting something I've made... but on the other hand, I'm only doing so because I want it to be a helpful resource for others, and what good is a resource if no one knows it exists? So, before I add any links to this video, I wanted to check with Ask The Tropers and see what's the right thing to do in this situation.
Edited by PeabodySamopen Sylviemations
Sorry if this isn't important, but Sylviemations seems to have a problem with laziness and getting other tropers to do the work for them. On this ATT query
, a few days ago, they asked why there wasn't a characters page for Numberblocks, and when I told them that there used to be one before it was cut for being a stub (read: having nothing but a load of empty folders), they complained that I cutlisted it instead of filling it out myself (despite me not being familiar with the work and only complying with the policy that we cutlist stub pages if no effort is made to improve them after the OP is notified). Multiple tropers tried to talk to them on the ATT thread, about how to create a page, policy on ZCEs, and the fact that pages need to have at least three non-ZCEs to stay. Then today, they created a page for the first time
...and it was a one-line stub that consisted entirely of the following sentence:
I’m too lazy to make this page someone else do it
openHow should I handle spoilering on my page? Web Original
Self-explanatory. I want to put ROYN as an example of media that uses certain tropes in their respective pages, but the format of the series makes it hard to handle this, so how should I handle this?
Edited by GammaRaulopenWMG: guesses about 'meta' production elements?
Bringing this over from the WMG cleanup thread
:
It's well established that WMG shouldn't veer into Real Life Troping about musicians and other creators, but do we have a consensus view on 'meta' WMG, speculation about casting and production rather than about the work itself?
We've got a few WMG pages that speculate about these topics — which character an announced actor might be playing, which creative team will work on a comic or who might direct a sequel to the film.
Should these be in scope for WMG? Or is it purely for discussing the fictional elements of the work?
openQuick question on the WhatHappenedToTheMouse entry on the PRTF character page Live Action TV
Back in June 2023, I removed the What Happened to the Mouse? entry from Gluto's section in the Characters.Power Rangers Time Force page (history is here
). V-Nerd re-added it nearly a month ago here
.
In many stories, some characters enter the story, serve their role, and move on without any fanfare. If they have served their purpose and exit the story, then it's not a What Happened to the Mouse? situation just because there isn't some final "where are they now" information given. The trope is for cases where a character simply disappears without reason or acknowledgment by the rest of the cast. Plus, it's also a plot point. In this instance, Gluto slipping away during the final battle between Frax and the Rangers by freezing himself is a reasonable explanation for him leaving the story.
Rather than get involved in an Edit War, I'm bringing this up here. That said, any thoughts on what should be done?
Edited by gjjonesopenNamespacing Quest Threads
So, I've been on-again-off-again working on the TLP Forum Quest
, which some of you might know better as a "Quest Thread" (if you don't know what one of those is, read the TLP). Considering how many Quests are being given trope pages, they really could use a definition + index page (which is what the TLP is trying to do), but there's another problem with Quests on this site that I'm not sure how to resolve: there's no consistent policy for namespacing them. Currently, they seem to be split between the Roleplay and Fanfic namespaces depending largely on author whim (and whether it's a derivative or original work), and the ones with accompanying artwork are often labelled as an Interactive Comic and accordingly placed in the Webcomic namespace. I'm completely convinced that Quests should be classified as Roleplay rather than Fanfic, but the distinction between Interactive Comic and Forum Quest is actually quite murky, given that the two formats are both descended from the same Ur-Example, Ruby Quest. I'm not sure exactly where the line ought to be drawn (as I said on the forum post, the idea that something is "not roleplay" just for having images doesn't quite sit right with me), nor what would need doing if a decision is reached. I tried asking on the TLP itself and didn't really get anywhere, and got no replies when I tried what looked like the relevant thread on the forums
. So now I'm here, where perhaps I ought to have gone first, to see what you guys think.
openCowboy Bebop At His Computer
Chris DV seems to be misunderstanding the trope Cowboy BeBop at His Computer as he's claiming that because Sophia Bush thought a plotline that was filmed but not used made it into the final version of a One Tree Hill episode that it qualifies for this trope. I explained that this trope is meant for examples of people outside a fictional work itself getting details wrong about it, not actors slightly misremembering things about it(and he claimed it was "misinformation" when it wasn't) I didn't see any examples like his on the trope page itself under Live-Action TV or anywhere else so I removed the bit on the OTH YMMV page about Sophia but kept in the bit about the show's fan-wiki being inaccurate(as i'm unsure if fan-wikis being inaccurate would be an example of this trope or not, that seems like more of a grey area but I left it in just in case).

openDogwhistle on Memetic Mutation Videogame
So i was reading the YMMV page for the cancelled Video Game/Hyenas, and i came across the following example of memetic mutation:
- JOIN THE ACK- explanation At the end of the announcement trailer for the game, the slogan "JOIN THE PACK" is supposed to be displayed. However, due to the fact that You Tube puts the thumbnail of the next recommended video on the screen at the end of every video, said thumbnail ends up covering the word "PACK" and turning it into "ACK"—a common exclamation for sudden dismay or frustration—making it seem like the writer of the slogan got into some unfortunate incident and couldn't finish writing it. The abrupt cancellation of the game itself just adds to it.
The part "common exclamation for sudden dismay or frustration—making it seem like the writer of the slogan got into some unfortunate incident and couldn't finish writing it. " really bugged me, this whole sentence felt really weird. That feels terribly specific and it's overall just a clunky piece of writing.
So i decided to investigate on google for "hyenas "join the ack" " and my suspicious were validated, all of the results containing the phrase where from Kiwi Farms and 4chan, with true context of this "Ack" that the troper pretends it's a "common exclamation for sudden dismay or frustration—making" was actually a mockery of the suicide of transgender individuals, one other example of "join the ack" that i found was an steam user making a community post with this as the title and going full transphobe.
Now, the point i'm trying to make is that based on my research, there is absolutely no way KB Zheng 123 didn't know what the context of that was about, which means they intentionally and knowingly added a transphobic joke to the site and tried to pass off as a regular joke, and that requires action by the moderators, as there should be zero tolerance for transphobia and transphobic users in this site.
openComments As Moments on Webvideo pages Web Original
I've noticed that there are a few moments pages for youtube series (mostly funny moments) where some of the moments listed are comments on one of their videos instead of anything from the video itself. Wouldn't those technically count as meta moments, or at least not count as actual content from the show itself?
Edited by AfterwordopenNot-Edit War but still should move here
Hey so, I edited Not a Subversion to replace the line
- (in fact, it might even be better for aversions to simply be called "avoidances", were it not for the enormous hassle such a change would be for this site).
- (in fact, it might even be better for aversions to simply be called "absent tropes", were it not for the enormous hassle such a change would be for this site).
My logic was that the Averted Trope page itself classified a Defied Trope as a trope "acknowledged and avoided by the characters" and saw "absent tropes" as a more clear way to communicate the idea of an Averted Trope.
I then looked at the history, and noticed a similar edit has happened before, where someone edited the line to be
- in fact, it might even be better for aversions to simply be called "avoidances," were it not for the enormous hassle such a change would be for this site and the fact that it would instead be confused with Defied Trope, in which a character actively avoids the trope).
this change was reverted by a moderator. That makes me think the current line is actively wanted.
I am of the opinion "avoidances" is a misleading term as well, and that line should be changed in the article. But think that should be discussed here first (obviously I reverted my edit).
edit: I'd also argue this usage of the word avoid doesn't accurately cover the meaning of aversion. Like when a trope is absent because it doesn't exist in the culture that made the story, it isn't "avoiding" the trope. And I also think it's too easy to mistake for the concept of "defying" regardless of the explanation of the author "avoiding" the trope (which as mentioned, doesn't actually describe the meaning of aversion).
Edited by IronAnimationopenShould spoiler tags be used in Late-Arrival Spoiler examples?
I know that the trope page says the examples are unmarked, due to the nature of the trope itself. But does it apply only to that trope page? Or does it apply to the rest of the trope's examples on this entire wiki as well?
Specifically if the Late-Arrival Spoiler trope is used/added/crosswicked in the work pages, should the trope example(s) have a spoiler markup or not? It seems like there are some inconsistencies, for example:
- Page(s) with hidden spoilers for the trope: The Expendables 3
- Page(s) with unhidden spoilers for the trope: Bayonetta 2, Deadpool 2, God of War (PS4), Batman: Arkham Knight
- Pages(s) with both hidden and unhidden spoilers for the trope: Spider-Man: Far From Home, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
openJay Garrick: The Flash Print Comic
For some reason, edits to Jay Garrick: The Flash aren't being reflected on my "Followed Pages" list, even though I'm following the page and even though I just made an edit to the page a few minutes ago. In theory, it should be at the top of my "Followed Pages" list, but it's on the second page, and according to the list, its most recent edit was November 23rd. I've checked the work page itself and the its edit history, and those are both up-to-date. Is this a known bug?

Remind me what the official stance on it, aside making wiki pages. What I mean is that I feel this
and this
post contradict each other.
