openLife is Strange fridge page Videogame
There are several entries in Fridge.Life Is Strange that are either too obvious to be considered Fridge, built on no basis whatsoever, or just flat out wrong. For example:
Too obvious:
- With the reveal that Jefferson is the one was kidnapping and drugging girls after taking pictures of them in Episode 4, a quote from his speech at the start of episode 1 shows that he was behind it all along, as he says "I could frame any one of you in a dark corner, and capture you in a moment of desperation", clearly alluding to the Dark Room. After that, he even seems to tease the player in retrospect. "Is that too obvious?"
Pointing out an obvious clue of foreshadowing. The game itself event points it out.
No basis:
- If you had Max euthanize Alt!Chloe in Episode 4, she immediately uses the photo to go back in time. However, that means that Alt!Max wakes up in her own body, next to her dead best friend she hasn't seen in years, having unknowingly killed her and with an entire day's worth of memories missing.
This assumes the game operates under multverse theory, which it doesn't. The entire message is that Max's constant time travelling is harming the timeline, which is desperately trying to correct itself.
Flat out wrong:
- Think sacrificing Chloe is the correct choice? "Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?" Well sure! Go ahead and rewind time to stop yourself from saving Chlo- Wait? Wasn't your constant rewinding of time the cause of the Time Storm in the first place? ...And you just rewound time AGAIN. Congratulations! You just made the storm in all likelihood BIGGER. The town will still be destroyed, Max will not have her powers to mitigate any fatalities like last time, and she just sacrificed her best friend for nothing. Have fun!
We specifically see that the storm didn't happen once Max gets back, due to the timeline finally being corrected.
The point here is that there are several entries like these on the page, and trying to list the reason for deleting each one will be a giant hassle. Is it okay if I just mass delete the wrong entries with a blanket explanation of "Factually wrong", or do I need to give each deletion its own explanation?
openOK to use notes to hide spoilers? Videogame
The regular [[spoiler]] tag is fine for hiding a few words, but is it okay to use [[labelnote]] instead to hide a large amount of spoiler-y text?
I'm cleaning up the page VisualNovel. The Letter, and some of the examples are a bit lengthy.
For example, I want to change this:
- Earn Your Bad Ending: In order to trigger certain character deaths or ruin certain relationships, you have to deliberately choose options that are cowardly, impulsive or very clearly offensive. Surprisingly, this also applies to the True Ending, which is not an Everybody Lives ending and requires you to deliberately trigger the deaths of Hannah, Marianne and Ashton before sending Luke off for a Heroic Sacrifice. And this is after you unlock the Memory Fragments that are triggered by every individual character's death.

It's not a big deal by itself, but several examples are like this, and it makes the page look like Swiss-cheese for people with spoilers off. I don't want to be overzealous with the notes, so I want to ask here first.
(I actually asked a similar question here a few weeks ago, so this is kind of like a follow-up question.)

Edited by craleigh318openBest way to clean up Self-Fulfilling Spoilers on character sheet? Videogame
Hi everyone! What is the best way to deal with Self-Fulfilling Spoiler and Spoilered Rotten examples on character sheets?
I've been working on the character sheet for the visual novel The Letter , and some of the characters' examples are inherently spoilers on their own. The most obvious examples are Character Death and Plotline Death for the characters who always die in the visual novel regardless of player choice. Currently for these examples, the trope name is visible, with the rest of the description spoiler-tagged.
Some things I could do (not sure what is best):
1. Do nothing.
If the way this character sheet handles spoilers is fine, then I won't do anything else.
2. Add an "Unmarked Spoilers" policy to the page.
I can add an "Unmarked Spoilers" notice at the top of the character sheet, and simply un-tag all spoilers. Since the visual novel is plot-heavy, this might be a good idea.
Besides the main page for The Letter is still spoiler-tagged, and people who want to avoid spoilers can simply read that.
3. Remove those examples.
The main page for The Letter already has a Killed Off for Real example, which AFAIK is already properly spoiler-tagged. I can just merge the examples from the character sheet into that one.
Thanks!
Edited by craleigh318openPotential edit warring on ''Characters/TheLastOfUs'' (Is it my fault?) Videogame
I'm getting a bit annoyed. It seems like every time I try to edit the character page for The Last of Us, any changes or examples I add are either deleted, commented out or re-edited, many times seemingly instantly after I post them. Admittedly some of them may have been misuses, but I'm getting really mad. I recently removed the page from my watchlist due to both the frustration and the desire to avoid potential spoilers from ''The Last of Us Part 2", but I went back to add more examples (which will likely get removed too) and saw more things removed. Off the top of my head, here's what was revised (examples are paraphrased SPOILERS AHEAD):
- Berserk Button: Joel has a tendency to get pissed off when someone asks about his past before the infection, particularly his dead daughter Sarah (this one was admittedly a misuse in hindsight, since the trope doesn't apply to situations that would reasonably anger someone, and Joel would reasonably not want to talk about such a painful memory and Ellie was intentionally pressing him about it)
- From Nobody to Nightmare: I pointed out Joel's rise from average, working class single father pre-outbreak, to reckless hardcore survivalist with a body count likely in the triple digits. David's group openly runs away from him rather than fight him after having killed dozens of their men. It was removed due to being "for villains only" even though a) it clearly says on the trope page itself "that being a villain is not necessarily a requirement for this trope, even though most who fit the trope are. Anyone who is feared or dreaded by someone (even if the "someone" in question is the cruel and tyrannical government that the heroes oppose) can qualify." and b) Batman is listed as an example. Not to mention that Joel is, at best a Nominal Hero.
- Older Than They Look: It's a bit hard to believe that Ellie is fourteen. Joel even asks if she's 12 when he first meets her. (She "looks that age to me". Though I do have a problem guessing the ages of children because I have always been younger than I look, I was 6 ft tall by the time I was fourteen and my voice deepened at a very young age; I had a Kevin Conroy-like baritone at the age of ten! So a kid that looks eight or nine to me will usually end up being in their early teens. Furthermore, nearly all of the adults in my town are also Younger Than They Look, further adding to the confusion). But again, Joel himself comments on it in the story, so the example should remain.
Those are just the ones off the top of my head, and most of the edits (except the last one) have been from a single user. Az_Tech341. I haven't PM'd him/her about the issue yet and I doubt it would go well if I did, so I just skipped a step and went here. Is there an issue or am I just an idiot who should stop editing the page altogether? I have already lost my editing privileges once when I was fairly new, and I'm trying to avoid it happening a second time. Probably doesn't help my case, but I have to be honest.
Edited by thecarolinabull01openOfficial romanization stuff in Fate/Grand Order Videogame
Okay, there's been some disagreement regarding how to romanize the name アルトリア (lit. Arutoria) for this game, which has been complicated by inconsistent official use. FGO's official translation uses 'Altria,' however, the recently released Fate/Extella's official translation uses Artoria. The company that localized it as 'Altria' wanted to use Artoria, but were overruled by the company that makes the game, who has used both forms at different points because nothing can ever be simple. The name is supposed to be a feminine of the Roman name 'Artorius,' which is a plot point later on. So far as I'm aware, the rest of the wiki uses the name 'Artoria' when referring to her by name instead of title. Finally, most fans kind of hate the name Altria. However, it is the official name for this single installment and does seem to be the name the company wants people to go with.
In this situation, what name should we be going with? The unpopular but slightly more official one or the name that sees more usage, but isn't used in the game itself due to questionable localization? There's been some arguing as to policy and a bit of back and forth on this one and I don't want it to spiral into an edit war.
In short, the official name is Altria, but they've also used Artoria officially before and just about everyone prefers that name because it makes more sense, so it's not clear which we should use.
Edited by ArhaopenStellaris YMMV example about a racist mod and controversy Videogame
We have this example on YMMV.Stellaris:
- What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?:
- A user created a mod that turned all Human phenotypes into European ones. While not particularly significant, the user also added the tagline "No Multiculturalism Here!", which resulted in the comments section of the mod being about what you'd expect with such a tagline. Cue the mod being deleted within the blink of an eye, a teacup tempest erupting over it, and the mod being brought back. You can read all about it here.
For the record (again), Paradox are Swedish. And that is all that will be said about that.

There is an Example Indentation issue already, but the example has other issues. Particularly potential drama importation/Flame Bait (note the Internet Backdraft pothole. The racist nature of the mod itself also does not do the example any favors) and that it is the only time on the YMMV page in which a Game Mod was referenced. Paradox being Swedish was likewise also unmentioned on the page outside the example. The history revealed the reason for the referencing of Sweden and the indentation. Both were tied to another example (added by a different troper) that was cut by the Trump/ROJEC thread. In which case I ask if we should cut it or not?
Edited by MorningStar1337open What's this genre? Videogame
I've now gotten a Works page for the Fairune series suitably big, but i can't figure out where to index it by genre. It's a top down game where the player explores a world gathering items, solving puzzles and beating monsters by walking into them, with multiple different maps for itself. I'd like to say Action Adventure, but it doesn't seem action-y enough for that. I don't suppose there'd be someone with a better grasp on genres over here?
For that matter, where do i go to get help with crosswicking? I could do it on ym own, but i might not have enough time to crosswick every trope on the page.
openMy First Edit Is Automatically Marked As YMMV, But Why? Videogame
Hello, everybody. I'm a newbie so I'm sorry if my question is answered elsewhere. I researched the issue but couldn't find anything.
My first edit signals a case of Talking To Himself in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The situation is simple and leaves no room for factual interpretation: the dubbing actors in question provide the voices of characters who interact.
So then why is the new example point considered a YMMV entry?
openHero of Another Story Videogame
On the trope page for Mental Omega, a troper added an example for Hero of Another Story which I removed since I don't consider to be valid (since the heroes in question are also playable characters in their own right) but he didn't agree and added it back for this reason: 'reputting because said I watch and played the game and saw it myself'. I'm not very sure about who's right and I don't want to start an Edit War over this issue.
open Diablo-like (videogame genre) Videogame
I'd like to create this page: Diablo-like (videogame genre) ...how can I do it? following is the text i'd like to put in the page. I submitted it to wikipedia but it doesn0t provide enough sources...although i think it makes sense.
Diablo-like is a video game subgenre, combining hack
and slash and action role-playing game gameplay, named
after the Diablo series.
A Diablo-like (also called in the pejorative sense a
Diablo-clone) features all this specifications at the same
time:
• Isometric/top down field of view
• Real-time, action combat
• Emphasis put on mouse use (movement, main attack,
interaction with scenario - "point-and-click")
• Loot: wearable items, quest items, power-ups, gold,
etc. (usually pickable by click on a text label: different
colors, different rarity/quality)
• Character development: leveling leads to increase of
stat/skill points, many classes available
• A single player character (as opposed to party control
seen in role-playing games)
The main focus of the game itself is not on a deep storyline,
relations with npcs or plot twists, like in other rpg
subgenres, but instead great emphasis is put on the sheer
“power” growth of the player-controlled character: improving
its performance (meticulously monitored through
mathematical parameters, like DPS or int/dex/str/vit).
This subgenre usually shows great replayability value,
because to reach top level with a character, multiple
playthroughs are required (Diablo 3 allows an adventure
mode, playing an alternate gamemode instead of replaying
the main campaign).
The possibility of creating multiple characters, each with
different stat/skills’ assignation, extends further the game
lasting appeal.
Notable titles:
• Sacred series
• Nox
• Fate series
• Titan Quest
• Grim Dawn
• Path of Exile
• Darkstone: Evil Reigns
• The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
• Loki: Heroes of Mythology
• Deathspank
• Kult: Heretic Kingdoms
• Legend: Hand of God
• Torchlight

openBiased Troper (only in regards to Paper Mario, though) Videogame
DarkChirano
seems to have a hateboner for the recent entries of Paper Mario (that is to say, Sticker Star and Color Splash), often being quick to put in information that, while factual, attacks the game, or being biased on the YMMV pages. Although some of it is older, almost all of it is out against the games:
- From early 2016, calling Sticker Star an Obvious Beta for interesting reasons:
Obvious Beta: While the game doesn't suffer any intrinsic technical issues, several basic features such as a secondary stat/meter (which actually was in a beta) or a unique reward type for defeating enemies are not present. Action Command prompts are also missing in action, meaning the player won't know Things have action commands. The programming behind Kersti's advice is also incredibly simplistic, only giving advice by activated event flags, compared to the first two Paper Mario's guides giving advice by the room. This may have to do with the developers scrapping the game twice.
- Attacking the current developers (who made the aforementioned games) as well as producer Kensuke Tanabe on YMMV.Paper Mario (bolded is what they added):
Worse still, some interviews have stated that they've handed over the reigns of the "Mario RPG" completely to the Mario And Luigi series, so there are some serious concerns that, as long as the creative team of the eighth gen games stay in charge, the dork age will literally never end.As has been explained many times, the Toad species have become The Scrappy to the Paper Mario fanbase due to an overabundance of generic Toads with no unique names and no real differences beyond colours or certain outfits. In addition, Toads are almost the only NPCs in both Sticker Star and Color Splash, greatly contrasting with the sheer variety of NPCs that the previous games had. This isn't helped by producer Kensuke Tanabe thinking Toads are the only usable friendly species, nor the fact the other current producers and directors also believe this to be true.
- Adding in more hate for Tanabe as well as the devs on YMMV.Paper Mario Color Splash (once again, bold is a new addition):
An interview
with Kensuke Tanabe revealed that Miyamoto was responsible for the lack of original characters, which was one of the major complaints about the game. However, this same interview also revealed Tanabe went to Miyamoto near-immediately after becoming producer for Color Splash, rather than Miyamoto coming to him. There's also the detail he never mentioned trying to negotiate the character restriction down, even if he couldn't outright say "No".
Risa Tabata also got a fair bit of scorn, getting the same treatment as Miyamoto. This is mainly thanks to the infamous interview with GameXplain, where most answers were either really vague such as "I don’t know if I want to say a proper story–but we have a story" or saying that since there's Mario & Luigi, there's "no need for RPG elements", which caused a massive Internet Backdraft. But at the end of the day, she's simply an assistant producer and not the lead developer, and thus she doesn't deserve some of the hatred she got beyond that interview. It's also worth stating she's mentioned Tanabe's influence a few times. The game itself started development very shortly after the release of Sticker Star, so by the time fans began savaging the revamped gameplay style, Intelligent Systems had put too much work into Color Splash to scrap it and start over. Of course, that in turn leads to the question of post-release patches for mechanic tweaks, such as the ScrappyMechanics mentioned below. - Pointing out that almost every character introduced in Sticker Star "doesn't actually have a name-name" on Characters.Paper Mario and calling it ironic that there are only 5 Toads in Color Splash with real names.
- As stated by lalalei2001, blaming Kensuke Tanabe and Rise Tabata for the whole "making Mario & Luigi the de-facto Mario RPG series" mess on YMMV.Mario And Luigi.
- Continuing the hatred of Tanabe and claiming that he thinks Toads are the only friendly species from the main series on Critical Research Failure.
* The reason why the 8th gen Paper Mario games only have Toads as a recurring friendly species is because producer Kensuke Tanabe thinks they're the only allies Mario has in the main series, and has encouraged his fellow staff to think likewise. Even a quick glance towards early gameplay of several main series games quickly demonstrate the utter falsehood of this belief, with species such as Piantas, Nokis, Jibberjays and Whittles, among many others.
However, their non-Paper Mario related edits seem to have been made by a reasonable person, so I'm not sure what's up, which is why I brought it here.

Edited by ChaoticQueenopenMetal Gear Character name pages Videogame
The character pages for Metal Gear list characters in the order in which they appear in the series. Major spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk.
SIGINT is listed on Characters.Metal Gear Solid, because MGS 4 reveals he's Donald Anderson. By this logic, there are several characters on Characters.Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain who don't belong there. Venom Snake should be in Characters.Metal Gear 1 and Eli, Tretij Rebinok, and Ishmael should have their tropes moved to their original character pages. The Man on Fire being Volgin gets a pass because it's basically its own entity. In fact, Big Boss himself should be moved from Characters.Metal Gear 1 to Characters.Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake.
I know these give away huge spoilers, but if we're going to do it for SIGINT then we need to be consistent and do it for all the other characters.

openMaking a Unique Page Videogame
Greetings. I've been inquiring about making a special page on the League of Legends
page. Specifically, I want to make a page dedicated to the items in the game. The list of tropes for League of Legends is huge, and I've taken it upon myself to try and clean it up, move character tropes to the character pages, etc. I'd like to do the same with the item tropes, but the path isn't clear.
There's a very similar page on the Destiny
page that is essentially what I'd like to do. Destiny has a page dedicated to the weapons, so that weapon tropes won't clog up the main page. It's essentially what I'm trying to do.
Any assistance?
Edited by CrewxopenThe Skybox "Trope" Videogame
Right, so this particular page has been bothering me for some time, with some people already voicing some concerns about it (back in 2010, no less).
First off, the description is written in a pretty nonsensical way:
- "Skyboxes are independent graphical elements." - what does that even mean?
- "Usually, a given skybox can be 'swapped out' for one that suits a particular setting." - well yeah, of course it can, like anything else in the level.
- "Some computer games come with several Skyboxes" - Of course they do.
- "...showing different types of meteorological phenomena (such as aurora borealis or other things that can't physically be rendered) or a even an entirely different setting (apocalyptic vs. modern, for example)." - The first part is correct (although the phrase "can't physically be rendered" doesn't really make sense, I assume it means "in real time".) The second part makes less sense though, what does it mean for a skybox to show a "entirely different setting"? (From what, the rest of the level? Why would a developer want that?)
- "The Skybox may also contain 3D models that will be projected larger than life, such as distant land features or buildings" - this can be debated a bit, since most game engines don't make a distinction between a "Skybox" and the rest of the level. In most games the background elements of a scene are simply that, objects placed in the background outside the area designed for the player. It's only really the Source Engine where there is actually a proper distinction between the two, which is probably what this statement is referring to.
- And then the statement: "Note that Skyboxes are specific to computer games; animated cartoons don't use Skyboxes, for the simple reason that there's no need to use them - the sky will naturally be drawn as part of the cartoon itself." doesn't even make any sense, especially the last part (you don't draw anything in a 3D animated film, and a 2D animated film obviously isn't going to have a "Skybox"). But the statement is also very wrong - CG animated films absolutely use Skyboxes, in fact they use a multitude of different 2D background elements even more frequently then games do, because there's no point in rendering a large part of the background if the camera is only going to be facing a certain direction or move a small distance in the shot.
The description probably needs to be rewritten completely, but there's another issue - this isn't really a trope. This is PeopleSitOnChairs. The fact is there's no point listing examples on this page because virtually every 3D game ever created will have a Skybox of some sort. It's just a basic fact of game development that there's going to be 2D elements in the background, and if the description is believed, the term Skybox also includes 3D background elements, so this article is literally describing the concept of a "background" itself. And every game that takes place in an outdoor environment is going to have one of those. It's such a universal concept that it's almost like making a trope page for the concept of "polygons". Personally I would either move the page over to Useful Notes or just delete it entirely.
Edited by SirBlahopenI normally would post it under a related entry, but...(rude edit reasons) Videogame
However, I feel this needs its own.
Marth of the Moon's edit reasons are getting rather inappropriate here
on the page. "Oh you motherfucker" and "Quite the Determinator for your shitposting, aren't you?" are extremely rude and uncalled for.
I will note that the entry he reported is reported for a good reason, it's clearly somebody shoehorning their site in for some form of advertisement of a crack pairing. That in itself is a problem(and that particular tumblr
is now attacking the user I'm reporting too, which is exporting drama). However, the fact that Marth of the Moon is being this rude is the entire reason for the pointless drama in the first place. That is not to say that Globplumber(and apparently is a ban evader of someone?) is not a problem regardless.

In SPV 3 (A mod for Halo: CE which re-imagines the first game's campaign), there are several weapons that possess incendiary properties. I'm unsure which of these fall under the above tropes, so I'll list each weapon and their incendiary properties to see if anyone can help me out.
Brute Plasma Pistol: Fires 3 plasma bolts with each trigger pull. Overcharge shot splits into globs of burning plasma upon impact, dealing damage to anyone standing on them while cooking off any grenades they land on.
Flamethrower: Self-explanatory. This one I feel would obviously fall under FB Weapon.
Sentinel Beam: Fires a continuous orange beam which sets unshielded enemies on fire.
Sentinel Sniper Beam: Rapidly fires multiple blue beams which quickly set unshielded enemies on fire. It also has two modes of fire: "Shotgun" mode (Beams are fired in a cone pattern while unscoped) and "Sniper" mode (Beams are focused on a single point while scoped).
Pulse-Laser Suppressor: Only used by Sentinel Enforcers. Fires small homing bolts which set unshielded enemies on fire after a few hits.
Incineration Cannon: Only used by Sentinel Enforcers. Fires globs of incendiary material which leave a burning residue wherever said globs land.
