Edited by PeterdhillonopenNewly proposed trope Live Action TV
How can I propose a new trope?
This is a fairly new and conditional Sitcom/Character trope.
In a core cast of 5+ "lead" characters (each present in a minimum of 95% of all episodes), one can be clearly identified as "the musical friend."
While this character isn't solely defined by their musical talents, and other characters may occasionally join in with their own displays of musical talent, audience and fellow cast-characters alike can identify them as "the musical friend."
Examples: • FULL HOUSE (1987): Uncle Jesse Katsopolis (singing / bandleader) • FRASIER (1993): Frasier Crane (singing) & Niles Crane (piano) • FRIENDS (1994): Phoebe Buffay (songwriting / guitar) • SCRUBS (2001): Dr. Christopher Turk (singing / dancing) • HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (2005): Marshall Eriksen (songwriting / piano) • THE BIG BANG THEORY (2007): Howard Wolowitz (keyboard) • COMMUNITY (2009): Abed Nadir (vocal percussion) & Troy Barnes (raps) • THE NEW GIRL (2011): Jess Day (songwriting / ukulele) • BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (2013): Jake Peralta (whatever he does; I haven't seen it) • SCHITT'S CREEK (2015): Patrick Brewer (singing / guitar)
What other examples can you think of?
Honorable mentions (because they don't quite fit the conditions provided above): • THE OFFICE (2005): Andy Bernard (~80% of episodes) • CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (2015): Rebecca Bunch (cast-characters wouldn't identify her as "the musical friend" because the song-and-dance numbers are all in her head)
Are there enough to qualify it as a trope, or does it remain in the category of "coincidental casting / character choices"?
openRemoving a page redirect Live Action TV
I'm currently working on reworking the Giant Robo page into mediums (i.e. manga for the manga, series for the Toku show, anime for the OVA) instead of clumping every entry on one page. However, the current page for Giant Robo is a redirect to Giant Robo. I don't know how/if I can remove the redirect by myself. Is there a way I can do this, or is mod interference needed?
openDo pages for foreign works have to have quotes in their original language? Live Action TV
I want to make a page for Hallo aus Berlin now that its memetic status has increased its profile but I don't speak German. So when I'm putting quotes on the page, should they be in German or English?
openEdit war on Narkina 5 Live Action TV
On Andor S1E8 "Narkina 5", troper tahna_los added an example of Chekhov's Gun that is a spoiler for the last episode of the season.
I sent the standard spoiler message and removed the example, on the ground that "No spoiler on a recap page also means no spoiler for future episodes", which I'm sure is the standard for recap pages. The example should be on the recap page for episode 12 (and I'm not even sure it qualify as a Chekhov's Gun in the first place).
tahna_los readded the example without discussing it, just this time without a spoiler tag, missing the point and starting to edit war.
openAre interview TV shows valid content for TV Tropes? Live Action TV
Regarding the Shot/Reverse Shot page I was struck that the Bobbie Wygant archival footage on You Tube show some of this in action. In her earlier days she had to work with one camera so after filming an interview with someone and the camera on the person being interviewed, she would quickly re-perform her asking the questions and reacting to the questions in quick succession (while the actor sits there dumbfounded). Sometimes she would first walk over to another chair that faces the single camera before performing these reverse shots and reactions (because it's easier to have a second chair facing the camera than it is to move the camera around). The footage is then later all stitched together to appear as if there were two cameras all along and it is one seamless interview.
Bobbie later got two cameras so she didn't need to shoot these reverse shots and reactions at the end, and her interviews became a lot more natural for it.
Anyway Bobbie's show was more like a news channel segment rather than a scripted TV show. Is it still suitable for inclusion as an example of how two camera shot reverse shots can be faked with one camera?
openCastle episode recap Live Action TV
I noticed that this
episode recap page has a warning about being cut for "Has fewer than three examples. Creating red links in 1 articles. Abandoning 26 inbound links." I'm not sure what this means and whether it's okay to recreate.
openHacked/Leaked sources for WMG Live Action TV
Are we allowed to use hacks and leaks to confirm/joss WM Gs or do we have to wait for it to be revealed properly?
openOne Piece (2023 YMMV) dispute Live Action TV
Hi, I wanted to ask something pertinent to the One Piece (2023) page.
I removed the following entry from the page on the grounds that since it hasn't even been a week after release, we can't really say if it was "warmly" received by audiences, or if it has actually "succedeed". We only have critic consensus to go by, and as we all know, critic consensus is hardly an argument for the success of a work - hence us having a bunch of tropes like Critical Dissonance.
- And You Thought It Would Fail: The poor track record of Western live-action adaptations of mangas and animes with critics and audiences, most recently (and notoriously) with Cowboy Bebop from the same streaming service as this one, had many people not expecting much from this series. Another point of skepticism was the belief that the source material was a Hard-to-Adapt Work due to its cartoony and budget unfriendly nature. If its warm reception with critics and audiences is anything to go by, it appears to have broken the trend.
Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus: One Piece captures the essence of its beloved source material with a charmingly big-hearted adaptation that should entertain longtime fans as well as patient newcomers.
It was added back some hours later by a different user from the one that created the entry, with no additional commentary. I have the feeling that we should wait until it receives a follow-up, or veritable proof of its success to add the previous entry.
Edited by Remulusopen Character Establishment Live Action TV
Is there a Trope that scriptwriters use to establish characters quickly. I'm thinking along the lines of when an actor says things like 'hey little brother/sister' which to me sounds clunky. I guess it's to let the audience know right away that they are related etc. so it cuts down on time.
Thanks. Paul.
open Unauthorized CM entry. Live Action TV
SPOILERS FOR KAMEN RIDER GEATS.
Leonold 70 added
an unauthorized Complete Monster entry for Beroba in YMMV.Kamen Rider Geats. Reddish has stated his reasons why she doesn't qualify yet (there's a chance that she is going to appear in the upcoming V-Cinema), so having the entry added anyway angers me. I've gone and deleted the entry, but I do believe that he has a lot of problems before, so this needs to be addressed.
openThe Swarm 2023 Live Action TV
The page for The Swarm currently shares all of its subpages with The Swarm, leading to a lot of confusion. As the series page only has three tropes on it, can we just move it to something like The Swarm (2023)?

Considering One Piece isn't set in the real world, is there a good reason for that?

What shows have shows have Shere Khan be responsible for which villain in the different adaptations he appeared that make the trope of Hijacked by Ganon?
openNo Title Live Action TV
What is the name of a trope where two different shows have similar plot lines. I think the Gossip Girls and Euphoria have similar plot lines of the blonde girl sleeping with her brunette best friend’s boyfriend.
openre "Let's Meet the Meat" Live Action TV
(not a question, just a comment)
"While Buffy doesn't actually want vampires to drink her blood, she sometimes enjoys taunting them by pointing out how good her blood would taste."
The Season 5 episode "Fool for Love" reveals that Slayer blood is a powerful aphrodisiac for vampires. IMHO it seems safe to presume that, when taunting vampires about "how good her blood would taste" in earlier episodes, Buffy didn't know that. Because if someone's already trying to kill you, giving them an *aphrodisiac* ahead of time will only...well, I honestly can't think of any non-crude way to say it. :-|
openQuestionable interconnected YMMV/main additions Live Action TV
While browsing the page for Kamen Rider Outsiders, I've noticed several errant comparisons being made in both main and YMMV to unrelated pieces of media. Specifically, there are examples in both YMMV and main comparing it and/or its antagonist Zein to characters in Paranoia, Digimon, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The problem is that I'm tuned in to several tokusatsu circles, and these comparisons have never come up even once. The Alternate Company Equivalent examples are also misuse in the SSBU and Digimon examples, as Kamen Rider does not compete with either; furthermore, the specific characters cited (Galeem in SSBU, Leviathan in Digimon) are up to seven years older than Outsiders, and therefore any resemblance to them is almost certainly a coincidence. The Paranoia examples also feel like even more of a stretch, considering it's a very old western work that, despite being a Trope Namer, seems to at least be in the realm of Mainstream Obscurity. I thus believe these are a singular troper's views being projected into the page.
The pages for Kamen Rider have historically suffered in quality (and I'm decently convinced similar odd examples are on other pages for the franchise but can't remember where), but I was wondering if it would be safe to start here before gunning for cleanup. Is it safe to remove these for being a stretch?

Right! A little obscure here. 80's British TV show/mini-series/film about a possessed teenage girl. Set in a pretty normal urban British household. Myself and my sister both remember so I know I didn't dream it 😁. I only really remember one scene, the mother comes into the bedroom and the daughter is twisted into a weird pose with a scissors stuck in her shoulder/chest/clavicle. It's wrecking our heads for years here as all both of us can remember is that scene. I've tried many different Google searches and come up with nothing.
I know it's not: Hammer House of Horror/Mystery, Tales of the Unexpected, Dramarama, Ghostwatch, Moondial, Dead of Night.
Cheers
