openBest way to clean up Self-Fulfilling Spoilers on character sheet? Videogame
Hi everyone! What is the best way to deal with Self-Fulfilling Spoiler and Spoilered Rotten examples on character sheets?
I've been working on the character sheet for the visual novel The Letter , and some of the characters' examples are inherently spoilers on their own. The most obvious examples are Character Death and Plotline Death for the characters who always die in the visual novel regardless of player choice. Currently for these examples, the trope name is visible, with the rest of the description spoiler-tagged.
Some things I could do (not sure what is best):
1. Do nothing.
If the way this character sheet handles spoilers is fine, then I won't do anything else.
2. Add an "Unmarked Spoilers" policy to the page.
I can add an "Unmarked Spoilers" notice at the top of the character sheet, and simply un-tag all spoilers. Since the visual novel is plot-heavy, this might be a good idea.
Besides the main page for The Letter is still spoiler-tagged, and people who want to avoid spoilers can simply read that.
3. Remove those examples.
The main page for The Letter already has a Killed Off for Real example, which AFAIK is already properly spoiler-tagged. I can just merge the examples from the character sheet into that one.
Thanks!
Edited by craleigh318openYMMV Question: Length of entires?
So an issue is coming up concerning a member on a YMMV page for the fan fic A Man of Iron. Basically, this member, Cheap Sun Glasses, clearly hates the story and has over the last few days repeatedly posted entries attacking the author and the story. Nothing too extreme, mind you... just things like "The author is an Smug Snake who thinks he knows the work better than everyone else" or "The author has no idea how to write the characters". This member first put these on the main page where they were removed as they were opinions. He has now put them in YMMV.
The issue isn't what he is posting it's the length. Nearly 3/4ths of his entries are massive walls of text that he even states are cut and pasted from a review he did of the story. Here is an example:
- Draco in Leather Pants: Mr. Chaos loves Tywin Lannister as much as he hates Catelyn Stark (see Ron the Death Eater), and tries to add a level of Hidden Depths to him. This scathing review of the story sums it up best:
"You spent a lot of time on the Lannisters, Tywin in particular. I'm kind of impressed by the image you presented of Tywin: cold, efficient, emotionless, and highly rational. A nice image, one Tywin himself would probably love. Too bad it has nothing to do with the Tywin Lannister as presented in the books. Tywin Lannister was a damn emotional being. He went to overkill on multiple occasions because of his emotions. The Reynes and Tarbacks were screwing his father and family for years: exterminate both families and destroy their castles. Rhaegar married Elia instead of Cersei: have Gregor and Amory kill Elia and her children in a monstrously violent manner. Tyrion married a peasant woman: have his guards rape her while Tyrion and Tywin watch, and then have Tyrion rape her while he still watched. Tyrion kidnapped by Catelyn: send in Ser Gregor and the Lannister army to invade the Riverlands (which, if Robert hadn't died when he did, would have meant Tywin disrupted the peace and would have faced severe reprisal for it). For all the people who praise him even while acknowledging his evilness, too few understand so much of who he was depended on the image he build for himself. There's a reason GRRM makes sure Tywin died in the priory and his very corpse stank: to make it clear how everything Tywin built was ultimately fragile and nowhere near as great and awesome as he claimed it was. Seven Hells, just look at how the Lannisters are doing in AFFC and ADWD compared to the Starks: where the Lannisters and their allies are destroying themselves, the Starks and their bannerman are the ones still around, still gaining in strength, and still very much willing to fight on for 'Ned's Daughter.'"
- He also tries to paint Rhaegar's relationship with Lyanna as a tragic love story. In reality, it was based on the paranoid narcissism of a selfish prince convinced that he was The Chosen One, or that his third child would be. To that end, he abandoned his wife (who was too weak to bear a third child) and ran off with a woman who was betrothed to someone else—even annulling his first marriage along with way—thus kick-starting a destructive war that got his not-wife and "bastard" children killed and his family displaced.
Now, to me that seems overly long. I have always assumed that T Vtropes likes to keep entries short. A sentence or two. Not the college essay this was. So I edited down his post to a more reasonable length and also added a bit for the other side. This is the edited version:
Draco in Leather Pants: Some fans feel that the author is doing this with Tywin, giving him more depth than there is. Others argue this is merely him developing the character, especially since he is given POV chapters here.
After I did this though it occurred to me that maybe I was in the wrong and it was perfectly within that member's right to have such walls of text in YMMV. And if so I will revert it back to what it was.
What are the rules on this? Am I correct that Tvtropes would prefer short, to the point entries? Or should it remain as posted, no matter the length? I don't want an edit war in any way, shape, or form, so coming to you guys.
Thank you

I see a lot of bad writing in A Girl Who Brought Down the World, such as misusing the spoiler tags. Are the spoiler tags the only problem that you notice, or does the page itself need a bigger cleanup?

How is a "large change" decided? As a percentage of page length?
My edit to JustForFun/IThoughtThatWas
, got flagged as Large, even though it was just adding 11 characters.
Although, the page source itself
just has... about 200?
openOld page that hasn't flourished
Self Propelled Barrier Of Stupidity has a grand total of four examples and three wicks. I also suspect it's covered by another stupidity trope. It's name is terrible in any case.
The thing is the edit history goes back to 2011. There's no YKTTW attached, but it existed before the restructuring, so I don't know if it had a draft.
Would the crash rescue thread be the place to bring it up?
Edited by DracMonsteropenedit war about expy
30 may, Pichu-kun introduced an entry about the protagonists of the remakes of Pokemon Yellow, Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! in Characters.Pokemon Protagonists And Rivals. In the entry, they included the following:
- Expy: He bares a resemblance to Red's original design but also bares a striking resemblance to Ash in the anime.
I removed this with the following edit reason: "Ash himself is blatantly the protagonist of the original games(his design is based in design of the protagonist of the original games, he uses one of his default names and the series started as an adaptation of the original games)."
Pichu-kun added the entry back with "Adding back the entry because the new protagonist is an expy of both Red and Ash" as edit reason.
openHow to write a good self-demonstrating article? Western Animation
I was planning to write a Self-Demonstrating Article for the obscure character Lightning Bolt the Super Squirrel, who appeared in two episodes of Tom & Jerry Kids and two episodes of its Spin-Off Droopy, Master Detective.
The only problem is, I've no idea how to write a good one.
I'd appreciate it if anyone could help!
openWhich Title Should Be Used? Anime
Over the weekend I created a page for a manga, Manga.O Inari JK Tamamo Chan, and used its unofficial English title, Manga.High School Inari Tamamo Chan, as a redirect.
Overnight a troper came in and flipped that, making High School Inari the page and O-Inari JK the redirect.
I actually have no personal issue with this, as I prefer the English title. However, the English title is not an official title. The series hasn't been released in English that I could find so Inari High School Girl is primarily a translation of the Japanese title.
I remember a question like this coming up for another page I made and wanted to double check before I acted. My question on this matter: Does it matter if the page uses the English title over the Japanese one if there isn't an official English title to use?
I originally set it up the way I did because How to Create a Work's Page states "if the work doesn't have an officially-translated English title, you can use the non-English title for the main page and make the English translation into a redirect instead." but is that a hard and fast rule we must do it that way? The wording makes it sound optional.
If it doesn't matter either way I'll let the matter drop because, again, I have no problem with it myself. If it's preferred and/or required though I'd like a consensus or something official I could point to for reverting it before I contact the other troper or otherwise act.
Thank you in advance.

I was just on the Dethroning Moment Of Suck page and noticed that when you clicked some of the tropers names, you were taken to a page with a personalized quote and tropes associated with the person as well as a link with their recent edits. I was thinking of making one for myself too but what are the rules concerning the creation of a page like this? I wouldn't want to break any of them.
openQuestion about Solo *SPOILER* Film
A few days back I corrected the name of one spoiler character on all pages for Solo Giving the following edit reason:
"Darth" is a title reserved for Sith Lords, and by the time The Clone Wars, Rebels and this movie takes place, he is no longer one, he says this himself on the former two works . However troper smasll_lordvoice
added more entries with the incorrect name and reverted some of my changes with no edit reason. I've PM them but received no reply, as such I ask if I could make the corrections again without incurring into an Edit War.
openNew self-demonstrating page
Okay... beyond the fact that the page SelfDemonstrating.IvaNova-ThatWomanArticulatingTales includes a hyphen in its title, and thus would need to be moved anyway, aren't new self-demonstrating pages generally frowned upon, and not to be set up without some discussion first?
And frankly, I have no real idea what this one is about even after glancing at it. It might be about a work... but shouldn't there be a proper work page before even considering a self-demonstrating one?
Edited by StFanopenYMMV/Sinestro Print Comic
The YMMV page for Sinestro (the comic book) is currently occupied by YMMV from Sinestro (a self-demonstrating page). In a case where there is both a work page and a self-demonstrating page, which should get the YMMV?
Edited by StrixObscuroopenThinking of Removing all Words of Aversion from the trope page One Steve Limit
The trope page itself states that only Aversions should be limited, due to how omnipresent this trope is, so I think I should remove all of the word "Aversion" from the page, due to how redundant it is.

Edited by JAG01openCan “Break the Cutie” be a part with the “Moral Event Horizen” comparisons?
The reason why I ask this is because the villain is attempting to break an innocent soul so he/she can either commit Suicide or turn them evil. Because of those reasons, I see that breaking the cutie should count as a villain crossing the MEH.
(PS, Sorry for my bad grammar. I speak fluent English, I just have trouble forming words myself...)
openWhen can I add my work? Literature
Hello fellow Tropers!
So I have a novel due for publication on 9/4/2018 through a small press and wanted to make a page for it. I've been staying away from any YMMV tropes because it felt a bit narcissistic to try and point out a "Crowning moment of Awesome" or "Tear Jerker" lol. I wondered about two things
1. Is there a way of creating a draft of a page? I wanted to work on it on my downtime but would prefer to not make it visible until the publication date.
2. I mentioned the YMMV tropes being avoided earlier, are there more types of tropes you would recommend I don't add myself as the writer of the book?
Thank you!

openPossible natter regarding that ''thing'' in YMMV/RurouniKenshin
- Overshadowed by Controversy: Watsuki's arrest for possession of child pornography in 2017 cast an inescapable shadow over the entire franchise. If this were any other author or any other franchise it wouldn't have hit as hard since many anime/manga know about the cultural differences in Japan and the west specially regarding child psychology, but the work always preached for a moral improvement. This coming out in the way it did, instead of let's say the author himself admitting it makes it hard for fans to rewatch the series without feeling hypocritical. And despite that Watsuki expressing regrets for his actions, posting bail and returning to work in April 2018, the damage is already done and fans are mixed whether to support his work or not. There's also the publisher Shueisha letting him continue to work after six months since the arrest which many people felt that it's too soon since the controversy is still fresh in the people's minds.
- Just some clarification in case needed. It wasn't explicit pornography but underage gravure which just very recently had become illegal in Japan and was not quite badly seen by the public until the past 2 decades or so, in fact Watsuki's arrest was possible due to him asking in an internet board for lawyers about just how illegal his collection was, which essentially worked as a confession for the police who actually was after his provider.
The second part in particular is my concern. There's obviously an indentation issue, but also a bit of natter or at the very least they should have worked it into the initial entry properly rather than making an extra bullet point for it. However, regarding what the troper wrote, I have to say I have not heard this clarification anywhere and I'm very hesitant to work that into the entry, especially if there is no source.
Edited by AkoSiKuya23openPokemon's fanon page Videogame
bunny001 changed some examples. Usually the fanon pages are pretty up-for-grabs since fanon is so fluid and changes from area to area, but I'm doubting the validity of these edits.
These are the originals:
- Hilbert usually has Oshawott as his starter with Hilda having a Snivy as her own in fanworks. Likewise, Nate will be given a Tepig (partly due to the Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 movie trailer) while Rosa has an Oshawott. Despite this, Hilda and Hilbert are most often portrayed with Tepig, and Rose with Snivy, in official art.
- Hilda is usually depicted as the protagonist of the first games. With the sequels, fan-works are evenly split between Nate and Rosa (with a slight lean towards Nate due to the animated trailer and to make him contrast with Hilda).

I am not interested in Unova fan-works anymore, but I remember at least during Gen 5 itself the original versions were accurate. I've always seen Hilbert with Oshawott and Hilda with Snivy. I'd also say fanworks lean towards Nate over Rosa.
