Ask the Tropers:
openColons or hyphens?
On the page for Fan Nickname/Hololive, all the examples are listed with a hyphen where you'd usually have a colon. Like this:
- Tokino Soda - Whenever she introduces herself, newcomers will often mishear her saying "Soda".
Is this acceptable?
openIs "Notable" Word Cruft in any fashion?
Mainly talking about the usage of the word itself in the wiki and if it falls under Word Cruft, given the existence of There Is No Such Thing as Notability.
openDeadman and Lobo need de-self demonstrating
So I was looking through the Comicbook section of SelfDemonstrating.Character Pages and I noticed that Deadman and Lobo are the only pages that don't actually have work pages. They need to be de-self demonstrated. I haven't read the comics myself so i cant do the work myself. What does everyone else think?
openSPUMC Venom's gender pronouns Film
In light of the release of the second trailer
for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, I want to put to rest a seemingly unresolved query as to what pronouns should be used when referring to the Venom symbiote. Being a symbiote, it has no defined gender or sex, choosing to assume the form of its host and never refers to itself by any pronouns but "we" across all continuities. Same goes for the SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) version of the character where it briefly possesses Anne and then morphs into a female form. In the same universe, however, Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock refers to Venom with male pronouns (which his comic book counterpart never really does so), which Venom never objects to, so while there might not be a biological sex, the symbiote seems to identify as male. Gernerally speaking though, the entity formed when Eddie and the symbiote merge together is also called Venom and the combined form is referred to with male pronouns. I just want to know what the consensus is though about what pronouns pertain to the SPUMC symbiote itself before officially altering any associated work pages.
openRewrite vs Retcon
Characters.Kingdom Hearts Vanitas Characters.Kingdom Hearts Vanitas
- Re Write: It happens with Vanitas in Re:Mind. He is established in his debut game Birth By Sleep to be the living embodiment of Ven's darkness, extracted from his heart. Ten years later, in III's Re:Mind DLC, he suddenly reveals to Ven and Aqua in a new scene that he is actually a separate being who was merely hidden inside Ven's heart and ripped out by Xehanort (though the line from III referencing himself as a piece of Ven is still left in when he dies, suggesting that he still views himself as a part of Ven). Ven and Aqua don't care enough to get more information before he fades back into darkness. Union Cross supports this with the reveal that one of the 13 pieces of Darkness sealed itself inside Ven to escape on the ark.
I'm having trouble understanding how this is different than Retcon. The Re Write page states it's "A Retcon which directly ignores, contradicts or alters information in the Backstory." So is it a sub-trope of Retcon or The Same, but More Specific? The Re Write page also has examples from Alternate Continuity or changes things that were assumed as opposed to outright shown/stated which seems misuse, so the trope might need cleanup.
openTTS Tear Jerker issues
As sad as the premature end of the series was, I question these resulting additions to TearJerker. If The Emperor Had A Text To Speech Device:
- Kitten arrives at the Noctis Labyrinth, but is ambushed by Cawl's forces and a battle ensues where the Custodes entourage suffers several losses culminating in Kitten's defeat and death to the despair of every Custodes present. The Emperor, having been watching and cheering on the Custodes, completely loses it and lets loose a psychic backlash so significant that it erupts from Holy Terra as if splitting the planet in half. Rogal Dorn attempts to mitigate this by donning his centurion helmet and jumping into the Emperor's lap despite the warp-storm, and seemingly succeeds in reducing it to a solemn rain as he lays distressingly still across the Emperor's lap. Once again, a loyal son of the Emperor has died at the hands of traitors while attempting to rescue his father, another has nearly perished just to please him, and another might be dead due to attempting to rescue the people of Terra. And with TTS going on an indefinite hiatus, this cliffhanger becomes a Downer Ending.
Alfabusa:
"The third part will not be released despite it honestly being quite close to finished. [...] [W]ith the situation now, other than needing to focus on starting up new projects and the lack of motivation, it also, in a horrible way, felt kind of apt to end it here. Sorry."
- What adds an extra layer of sadness to the whole affair, the final episode is dedicated to Corrie (CCRockchic), the female voice of Cawl after she passed away from lung cancer. The message in the description speaks for itself.
This was meant to be her second appearance as Cawl. She would have done amazingly, we know this for an absolute fact, and we are still distraught she did not have the chance to reprise her role. We thank you for the time and the work you did have the time to grace us with, Corrie. Thank you so much, and rest well. - The Fate of TTS
. Thanks to GW's new zero tolerance policy for fan animations, Alfabusa has announced that he can't afford to take any legal risks, especially with his newborn child, and so the series is going to be shelved for the foreseeable future. He goes into depth, almost on the verge of tears, that after working on this project for the last eight years purely out of love for Warhammer 40,000, he and the cast will likely be stepping away from the franchise, especially in light of recent allegations regarding the company. He admits that they might make content for other franchises to keep things going, but knows that it'll affect viewership with how niche the channel is and he's not sure if support will dry up or not. The whole situation has turned him into, in his own words, a meatball of despair.
As Tear Jerker is NoRealLife.Too Common, I question if the last examples is a violation of that as, sad as it is, is entry out-of-universe. The In Memoriam I'd consider valid as it ties into/expands upon the in-work Tear Jerker aspect, and is unrelated to the cancelation, but I'm running it by.
Also, in response to the series de-facto cancelation, the pages image was changed from [1]
◊ to [2]
◊, the newer one seems like Just a Face and a Caption. Thoughts?
openGLaDOS Page weirdness
Something weird is up with SelfDemonstrating.G La DOS (Unless it's just my phone.)
It's full of end lines as though someone had added double slashes between almost every word. But theres nothing like that in the page source and I can find nowhere in the history where it was vandalized.
The page has a metric crap ton of formatting to give it its voice. Did it break the page?
openOvershadowedByControversy about a (real life) person -- kosher?
So, the Depp/Heard domestic violence thing again popped up. This was added to Johnny Depp 's Creator page:
- Overshadowed by Controversy: This has been the case for him since the allegations of abuse between him and Amber Heard (both claiming that the other is the abusive one while they only acted in self-defense), as he's been in the news much more for his court battles than for his movies. He was eventually dropped from the third Fantastic Beasts movie after he lost his libel lawsuit against The Sun for calling him a "wifebeater."
Can Overshadowed by Controversy even be added to a character (or actually a real person, in this case), isn't it only about works?
It's a YMMV so it also triggered the warning icon.
openSmart Lancer and Big Lancer
So, in my review of several Super Sentai pages, I've noticed a few times a character in the group get called either The Smart Lancer or The Big Lancer (with links to relevant Lancer/Smart Guy/Big Guy pages). It's making me wonder if maybe these 'Lancer combos' should become either full-fledge pages of their own or maybe just side notes on the Lancer page itself. I just wanted to discuss this before launching any Trope pages.
openIs ExpositoryHairstyles a trope, or an index? ... EDIT: Are we done cleaning?
I'm on a bent to do some TRS Wick Cleaning, and my focus is Expository Hairstyles, right now, since it's super short.
Expository Hairstyles is used as a trope in at least Motherly Side Plait, and calls itself a Super-Trope, but it looks like an index.
Is it an index or a trope? Or is it a trope that has effectively an Examplesectionectomy?
There's 33 wicks
left. Should we work to remove all of them, or is it basically as clean as it can be?
openIs there a way of removing an ATT thread?
My last thread was... embarrassing and I'm feeling pretty bad about asking in the first place, since it ended up seeming like I was requesting people edit a page I could do myself. I've had a clean history here and I don't want that affecting me.
openCreator vs Web Video
I've asked this several times but never got a definitive answer. Should Creator.Ryan George be moved to WebVideo.Ryan George? It's only troping his Youtube channel (which is also titled "Ryan George"), plus the only other work he's done with its own page is also web video work.
I have a similar question about the Creator.Pro ZD page, as it's largely troping his web video sketches, but unlike Ryan George, SungWon Cho is a creator with works in multiple namespaces since he's also a voice actor. However, his videos are eligible for YMMV items that a Creator page usually shouldn't have. So what would we do in this case? Keep it as one page or split Creator.Sung Won Cho for the actor himself and WebVideo.Pro ZD for his skits?
openExcessive gushing in YMMV/TheRageaholic ?
I'm specifically thinking about the the examples for Heartwarming Moments and Moment of Awesome, both of which mention the allegations against Michael Jackson, which is a bit of a contentious issue in and of itself.

openTroper with poor grammar
I've noticed that tgibsonlabour45 has some issues with grammar in their edits to Danganronpa pages, especially punctuation and run-on sentences.
- Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Subverted by her surviving the events of SDR 2 in hope arc but in spite of her flaws Mahiru is an extremely kind and selfless person who loves photographer because she loves seeing others smile and making them happen, when twilight syndrome framed her for covering up Natsumi's death she didn't run from it, she tried to make amends over the death of her school bully to her brother who was also a massive toxic bully, this of course ends up killing her coldly, the group especially Hiyoko are distraught and Hajime notes her kind hearted and forward nature and throughout the investgation is really saddened even both Fuyuhiko(Initially he's remorseless but later attempts seppuku out of his guilt over her death alone) and Peko (calling Mahiru's murder senseless and asking for the group to never let it happen again) seem to regret their actions and Hiyoko creates a memorial focusing on her pictures that while initially freaks the group out they come to really adore it as it shows how much her pictures made others happy(Fuyuhiko even has a hide to find scene where her looks at a picture with him and Peko where he reflectfully notes that its the first time he's ever seen a picture where they both look like equals and wonders when Mahiru took it.
- Karma Houdini: Completely averted, every game had a legit killer surviving and its true that Fuyuhiko was as guility as Peko in Mahiru's murder but firstly he is badly injured to the point of losing an eye and his eye for an eye thing comes back both ways as Peko dies, in addition after the second trial he goes as far as Seppuku to show the group that he's truly sorry to the point of death for what he did to Mahiru and drops the whole asshole lone wolf thing and becomes a highly reliable and kind hearted member of the group, arugably the most useful after Hajime Chiaki and at times Nagito. He truly earns his survival.
- Alas, Poor Scrappy: Hiyoko died in an attempt to honour Mahiru, she also died completely scared and alone, while Hiyoko was far from a great person its pretty hard not to feel bad as she tells Sonia in a flashback "i can do it because Mahiru taught me", bully or not she was a scared kid dealing with her only friends unfair murder and to make things worse she was trying to change and only died because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, if Fuyuhiko and Peko didn't coldly take out Mahiru she'd still be alive [The missing period is not an error from me incorrectly copying and pasting.]
I sent a notifier, but they've made so many edits that it's going to be hard to fix all of them.
Edited by ZuxtronopenIs there an Alternative Character Interpretation cleanup?
Title is self-explanatory but I'll explain anyway. Alternative Character Interpretation an item that is very susceptible to shoehorning, and often attracts exaggeration along the lines of Ron the Death Eater and Draco in Leather Pants. One page that reeks of this is AlternativeCharacterInterpretation.Bo Jack Horseman, which was created by a troper who had a problem with complaining and has a lot of rambling about interpretations I've never heard from any other fan of the show. Is there a cleanup thread to discuss certain examples that might be too farfetched to make sense, are the opinion of a single fan, etc?
Edited by mightymewtronopenexample arguing with itself Literature
The Dune example under "Literature" on War for Fun and Profit is arguing with itself. I don't know anything about the series beyond half-paying attention to the movie and TV Tropes examples. Could someone who does know please fix?
openMore from Unbuilt Trope Literature
(The original entry is two bullets at the bottom of LONG list of "teen dystopia" sub-genre entry)
- The Hunger Games itself is a Trope Codifier for the YA Dystopia Novel note Though The Giver and Uglies both predate it, it started the trend more properly , and has many deconstructive elements, thanks to its author being very fond of deconstructor fleets. After all, the dystopia depicted isn't that much worse than the resistance, the Love Triangle is a ploy for attention by the villains, and most of the second book is spent exploring how the main character's psyche has been affected by the events of the first rather than a further adventure.
Ignoring how it's include as Trope Codifier (But is it? The note only claims it "started the trend more properly", not how it codifies the genre), the fact that it outright say "its author being very fond of deconstructor fleets" make me think it's more of "early deconstruction" than actual Unbuilt Trope.
Edited by KuruniopenCharacter Agenda-Based Editing? Live Action TV
Civil War is known for being a film with a very strong Broken Base, and Melbell 18 made several edits
to Captain America: Civil War that seem to be biased in Tony Stark's (himself a massively Base-Breaking Character who is notorious for inspiring Draco in Leather Pants and Ron the Death Eater reactions) favor.
Do I have permission to reword the language and remove some of the more accusatory changes?
Edited by AlleyOopopenSlightly suspicious troper Videogame
jamesalan
added a link to an unofficial web port of Five Nights at Freddy's 1 (hosted on y9freegames.com) on the Five Nights at Freddy's Franchise page. This edit strikes me as a bit odd because:
- It's an unofficial link, on a page about the official work.
- The link itself just reads "Online gameplay link" and is thrown in the middle of the spin-offs section of the page, on top of using the wrong formatting (a dash instead of asterisk for a bullet point), which has a bit of a spammy feel.
- Almost all of that troper's edits consist of adding links to web games.
I removed the link since it was out-of-place, but this incident makes the whole y9freegames site seem suspicious to me. The troper added another link to that site on Happy Wheels, which I'm not sure if it's OK or not.

Question about this from HoYay.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic that was brought to HoYay cleanup
and cut.
I get removing it as it's not unintended subtext. But if so I'm confused why the Word of God intentional Ship Tease between them in the Series Finale and intentional subtext between AJ and Rarity in the Equestria Girls series are still listed? Also from the page:
- Even her VA, Tara Strong, is getting in on it. Claiming that Twilight's "deep dark secret" is her crush on Pinkie Pie when asked at the MLP Panel at San Diego Comic Con 2018.
Was is kept because it's not in a capacity that's presumed as serious unlike the other? Is it not Ho Yay because it's not about subtext in the work itself? Not within plausible deniability like the retained examples? Or was there some other reason?
That there actress is aware and approves of the ship is likely a reason for the subtext in their interaction and contributed to it being upgraded to Ship Tease in the finale. Even if not Ho Yay it's seems relevant/contributing enough to it that it should be mentioned somewhere. Ideas where? Approval of God?
I also asked here
, but this may be a wider issue that would benefit from wider feedback.
