openContested Sequels for The Legend of Zelda? Videogame
The YMMV page for The Legend of Zelda has Contested Sequel with the following argument.
"Between the near-universally agreed-upon golden age of A Link to the Past to Majora's Masknote Excluding the hiatus after Link's Awakening that brought the CD-i games and the renaissance in the eyes of previously disgruntled fans with A Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild, many of the games released in the time between those periods became this (at least in the eyes of fans; critics largely consider the series consistently good). By far the most divisive period among fans is the DS/Wii era (Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword), which has many fans decrying it as the low point of the series due to issues such as increased linearity, overly long intro sections and pre-dungeon quests that drag down the pacing, and decreased difficulty; however, just as many fans find the DS/Wii era on par with the rest of the series, if not the high point, thanks to their more focused gameplay, more substantial main quests, more accessible difficulty with potential for Self-Imposed Challenge. This era's greater focus on storytelling is also divisive, with many fans debating on whether the games' stories work with or make up for the increased linearity or were the cause of its problems with handholding and pacing and/or weren't good enough to make up for the linearity."
Is this entry even valid? Most of the games described in the entry were commercial and critical successes back when they were first released and even when people find flaws in those games in hindsight, they otherwise have positive opinions about this game. I already posted this question in the discussion page
and Is this an example
, just in case.
So, what do you say?
Edited by MasterHeroopenEdit War over misuse
So on little while back troper, fugamalefica, made a page for Characters.Harry Potter Bellatrix Lestrange that was merged with a new page Characters.Harry Potter Death Eaters Inner Circle. They also added
a entry before it was merged:
- One True Love: Despite being married to Rodolphus Lestrange, Voldemort is the love of her life and the father of her child.
This entry was merged into the Inner Circle page. However, Ti M Ber 1566 removed it
with the edit reason There is no genuine love between Voldemort and Bellatrix at all. Bellatrix only "loves" Voldemort because he embodies her racist views, not for Voldemort himself." fugamalefica then re-added
it saying "Rowling herself called Voldemort the love Bellatrix's life. She is mentioned in the books to speak to him as if to a lover. To say otherwise is merely a matter of opinion." Now I know that this troper has already been suspended
for edit Warring concerning Voldemort and Bellatrix's "love". So what should be done here. I feel like the work doesn't really portray it as One True Love and given that it is a result of edit war and a tropers shipping bias. Am I good to remove?
open"They Changed It, Now It Sucks!" misuse?
- They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The manner used to bring John to his Silent Protagonist self from the games ( which amounts to him undergoing Death of Personality so that Cortana can drive his body) has been absolutely eviscerated by fans. Part of this is due to the fact that many had no problems with John having a personality on the first place, instead disliking the Adaptational Personality Change he went in the series. Many also viewed it as a tone-deaf insult toward fans.
I question if this is an example as it's not the change from the original that this states it disliked, but changing/undoing his Adaptational Personality Change which was already disliked. So dislike for the means of bringing him more in line with the original, that sounds like something else. Maybe Fan-Disliked Explanation? Anything else a better fit?
openWhat is this?
Peacefulpie is a new troper, and their edits are kind of odd.
- Here
, they switched 'Tolstoy" to 'Toystory'.
- Here
, they switched 'Pushkin' to 'Pushykins'.
- Here
, they switched 'Gogol' to 'Googly eyes".
- Here
, they seem to make a toilet joke in an image caption. It looks like they also removed the image itself (and added
a commented-out note with 5 misprints) but that's been fixed by now.
- They expanded
an image caption, then deleted
their addition saying "vandalism" in the edit reason.
openQuestionable entries to NotWorthKilling .
Thought I would bring this here instead of just going in and deleting examples. Want to make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree. The Not Worth Killing page has many entries that are questionable at best, and others that seem to be roughly shoehorned in to make them fit.
Some examples: Under the Real Life section, this is given as the reason Ali signaled the ref to end his fight against Jerry Quarry. Anyone who has seen or knows about the fight knows that is not the case. Quarry put up a valiant effort but by the seventh round was completely out of gas and could barely defend himself. Ali was deriving no satisfaction whatsoever out of pummeling him, because Everyone Has Standards, and even the commentators were openly wondering why the ref hadn't stopped the fight. After the fight Ali personally went to Quarry's corner to make certain he was okay and speak kind words of encouragement to him. Not Worth Killing simply doesn't apply.
Also under Real Life, the BBFC returning the film New York Ripper to Italy has nothing to do with killing anyone (it's a film, not a person). Again, you could probably say the BBFC was just displaying Everyone Has Standards.
Under the Live-Action TV section, take the Daredevil example of Fisk telling Wesley not to kill Karen. It isn't that Fisk thinks she's not worth killing, it's just that everything she knows is already in the papers so done is done, and Fisk does show her respect. If killing her would have kept it out of the papers, she'd be dead because she would have been worth killing.
Under Film - Live Action, the Breaking Dawn example feels incredibly shoehorned in, Cruel Mercy is what really applies.
The Predator example is another. It's not that Dutch thinks the Predator is not worth killing, far from it. He can already see it's mortally wounded, so he drops the rock and asks it a question ("what the hell are you?"). Big mistake on his part, because it gives the predator the opportunity to activate the self-destruct feature in his armor.
Okay, that's all. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

open potential Edit War with Bense in the Hobbit Literature
This other troper and I have been arguing. We can't agree on anything. The problem is that I am willing to keep entries on our debate neutral, and he keeps asserting his point of view as fact. The problem is that his views I just cannot bring myself to leave them be. They simply clash with all my interpretations of the book and I feel a little sick looking at what he treats as fact, since in order to be at peace with it I'd have to change my very moral compass, and I can't just do that on short notice!
openAvoiding an Edit War
Reposting
a couple things
(though it's not exactly the same).
The other day, someone added
a "[sic]" next to each "Hearths" in Characters.Friendship Is Failure. While I think using "[sic]" itself is fine, I want to remove it in this case because it isn't a spelling mistake. Also, I checked and "hearths"
isn't an obscure term. It's additionally used
on The Other Wiki. Additionally, I posted this on a cleanup thread. However, nobody answered my question. Would it be ok if I remove them?
I would do it myself, however, I want to avoid an Edit War because the troper in question brought them back
after I deleted them
.
open Edit to Fate/Stay Night character page constitutes vandalism? Videogame
In this edit
for the character page for Saber from Fate/stay night, user SteelDumpling replaced all instances of "Altria" (the character's official English name as of Fate/Grand Order) with "Artoria" (an alternate localization that is preferred by the fans and has been used in some localizations prior to Type-Moon coming down against it), even in instances where this is inaccurate.
I do not want to start an edit war so I have messaged the person requesting they revert the edit. In the event they do not, should I just do it myself?
Edited by Arawn999openDoctor Who WMG - guessing for future episodes on episode-specific pages Live Action TV
How do we handle tropers adding WMG for future episodes/seasons of a show to an episode-specific WMG page?
I'm specifically looking at WMG.Doctor Who 2022 CEN The Power Of The Doctor, which accompanies the equivalent recap page. Now that episode has screened (at least in the UK), all of the existing WMG has been marked as Jossed, Confirmed, not addressed in this episode etc.
However, the final cliffhanger leads into the three 2023 specials, which are very likely to get their own recap pages. And we're now getting tropers adding new WMG about the plots of those specials and the possible payoff for the cliffhanger.
My initial thinking is that this isn't a problem in the short term ... but as soon as those new episodes go out, adding any Jossed/Confirmed response to those guesses would be a problem. It's a Spoilers Off page, but even if they were tagged, my understanding is that a WMG page for episode #22 of a series shouldn't include any spoilers for episode #23 onwards?
So should we leave the WMGs about the next batch of episodes there indefinitely, move them once a more appropriate WMG page is created, or immediately delete them from the page?
(I did delete one on this basis, explaining my thinking in the edit reason - but more are now being added and I'm second-guessing myself)
Thanks!
Edited by Mrph1openCan edit history be cleared?
A while ago I added the author's name on the pages Frollo Freak and Back to the Frollo, as the author herself gave the info on her official sites where the fics are hosted, and her social media sites, which the aforementioned official sites link to. After learning that this action still counts as doxing, I removed the name from both pages, but they remain in the edit history. Is there a way to clear edit histories or remove those specific edits?
I am also aware that doxing is a bannable offense, and I will take any punishment as warranted.
Edited by FuyumotoopenQuestion About Fanfic Recs
Hello, am I allowed to rescind a fanfic recommendation I made because the fic itself was removed from Archive of Our Own. I see no point in leaving the recommendation there since there's no way to read the fic anymore.
I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be but I feel safer clarifying first.

openSalvaged Story entries Film
On the YMMV page for the Black Panther film, several entries under Author's Saving Throw were moved to Salvaged Story:
- Following in the footsteps of the Vulture, the Grandmaster, and Hela, Killmonger was chosen as a deliberate attempt to create a sympathetic and memorable MCU bad guy after a string of widely-criticized and forgettable Generic Doomsday Villains. Given the amount of "Killmonger Was Right" memes currently circulating around the web, it's probably safe to say they succeeded and then some. Much the same goes for Klaue who became a fan-favorite as a Laughably Evil companion of Killmonger.
- The filmmakers have gone out of their way to avoid the continuity problems that have plagued the MCU. While the Marvel movies are widely praised, they have been criticized for Continuity Lock-Out and focusing more on setting up sequels. Black Panther functions as a self-contained story with almost no references to the previous film or characters outside of the news broadcast and Ross briefly recapping T'Challa's arc in Captain America: Civil War and the post-credits scene involving Bucky Barnes in Wakanda, thereby making it more accessible for casual fans.
- In the comics, M'Baku the Man-Ape is a savage, brutish Scary Black Man who dresses up as a gorilla, which brings to mind uncomfortable racist caricatures comparing black people to monkeys and apes. This movie doesn't use the "Man-Ape" moniker and downplays the gorilla imagery, while hitting him with a dose of Adaptational Heroism to turn him into an Anti-Villain who undergoes a Heel–Face Turn.
The problem is that none of these seem to fit the trope's current definition (which is about a problematic story element being explained) but rather focus on the film avoiding problems that previous entries had.
Edited by Javertshark13openTaylor Swift-Kanye West incident at the VMAs
From Heartwarming.Real Life Other:
- At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when Taylor Swift went up on stage to accept her Moonman for Best Female Video, she was rudely interrupted by Kanye West, who infamously declared that "Beyonce had the best video of all time!" So when Beyoncé herself wins the award for Video of the Year, what does she do? Rather than deliver the acceptance speech that she had prepared, she invited Taylor back on stage to finish hers.
- Harsher in Hindsight as experienced media reviewers spotted evidence that the "interruption" had been prearranged
. Beyonce's husband Jay-Z later revealed that it had indeed been staged.
- Harsher in Hindsight as experienced media reviewers spotted evidence that the "interruption" had been prearranged
Disclaimer that I am a Swift fan and not a West one, but I attempted to search for Jay-Z's "reveal" and Google turned up no results. The "experienced media reviewers" seem to be giving nothing but speculation and gossip, and even the comment section of that page calls them out on it.
Should the second bullet point be removed, then?
Edited by annieholmesopenUnintentionally Sympathetic entry that hits a wrong note.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UnintentionallySympathetic/AnimeAndManga
In My Hero Academia, Endeavour is shown isolating and roughhousing Shoto, for seemingly no other reason than besting All Might vicariously through his offspring. Shoto and Natsuo blamed their father for their loved ones' downfalls, even if he wasn't physically present at the tragedies. Though Touya's backstory recontextualized the Todoroki history. While Endeavour was still a major cause of conflict, all the family members contributed. Rei agreed to the quirk marriage and having more children after Fuyumi, thinking it could help her family. She could've of put her foot down more and pay closer attention to her older children, when she was wrapped up in her own fears. Besides from Shoto, who was too young at the time, the Todoroki children played their part as well: Touya would burn himself for his hero training and lash out against his loved ones' warnings. Fuyumi was aware of her family's unspoken tension, but kept silent for the sake of keeping the peace. Natsuo grew tired of Touya's ramblings and wasn't as supportive as he could've been.
This doesnt argue that Endeavor Is sympathetic but rather how unsympathetic everyone else is.
openNeptunia Characters page Videogame
The characters page is split based on each game. The first game has its own continuity, and the third game introduces some AU Counterparts, but the Hyperdimension characters appear repeatedly throughout the series, so they're often just getting the same tropes on each game's character page. Wouldn't it be better to have Character Specific Pages like Broly's with folders for different continuities as well as one for common traits?
Edited by KOman

I recently ran across Taylor Swift and I think the page needs a cleanup. While there are some valid theories and musings about the fictional characters Swift portrays in her songs, some of them get uncomfortably gossipy and speculative about her private life and orientation. I can clean it up myself, but do I need to take it to a thread somewhere? Cheers!
