openCan Mewtwo have Hartman Hips? Asking for someone else.
All the way back in 2014, I pulled an example on Hartman Hips that listed Mewtwo (the genderless, barely-humanoid pokemon). It read as follows.
Mewtwo, despite being classified as genderless and leaning on the masculine side, has pretty big hips while having a small waist and shoulder line.
I just got an inquiry from a troper named Gamer Boy 18 that asked me how it isn't a valid example.
I don't like it when someone sets themself up as the curator of a particular trope, so rather than answer with authority I'm posting it here.
My logic is that since Hartman Hips is about a particular style of drawing female characters and it isn't female, it's not valid.
(Also, it's rather strange that I got an inquiry about an edit I made back in 2014 when the subject hasn't been brought up since then)
openPro-Heard edit
- Johnny Depp was fired from the Fantastic Beasts series in the middle of production of the then-upcoming third film when he lost a libel case against a tabloid in the UK in November 2020. The tabloid had run a headline calling him a "wife beater" in the context of talking about him remaining in the series despite allegations of domestic violence against him by ex-wife, Amber Heard.note He was cast sometime in 2015 for the first film in the series but his role (which in that film was really just a glorified cameo) was kept secret until the film came out in November 2016, by which time Heard had filed for divorce and been granted a restraining order. The judge in the lawsuit ruled in favor of the tabloid, saying the tabloid's (and, by extension, Heard's) allegations were "substantially true", with twelve of fourteen instances used by the defense meeting the civil standard for domestic violence. Supposedly, WB had done its own investigation into the situation that came to a similar conclusion as the court case and had just been waiting for some sort of legally binding ruling to cut him loose.note A case in the US directly against Heard, in which Depp alleges that he had been defamed and that damages have occurred as a result of an op-ed that Heard had posted in the Washington Post in 2018, had its trial by jury commence in April 2022 (Same month as the film's release). Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen was very quickly cast to take over the role. Depp later won a defamation suit against Heard had better luck in 2022.the trial in the US but an inconsistent ruling by jury note They found she defamed him with the allegations but also she was defamed herself by his lawyer when he called her allegations a hoax on top of serious questions about the fairness and venue of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the trial did little more than kicked it up to the appeals level.
queenhippolytas
accuses the verdict of being inconsistent, despite the fact that due to the trial being a suit/countersuit it's perfectly possible both parties could be defamers. This also ignores the context behind Amber's win, Depp's former attorney made a highly specific allegation that was hard to prove.
openAvoiding an Edit War
Reposting
a couple things
(though it's not exactly the same).
The other day, someone added
a "[sic]" next to each "Hearths" in Characters.Friendship Is Failure. While I think using "[sic]" itself is fine, I want to remove it in this case because it isn't a spelling mistake. Also, I checked and "hearths"
isn't an obscure term. It's additionally used
on The Other Wiki. Additionally, I posted this on a cleanup thread. However, nobody answered my question. Would it be ok if I remove them?
I would do it myself, however, I want to avoid an Edit War because the troper in question brought them back
after I deleted them
.
open Can non-monolithic supranational polities count as Space-Filling Empires?
Would Space-Filling Empire apply to a world whose political geography is dominated by supranational unions and superstates that lack the monolithicity that is typical to said trope? I will use the Front Mission setting as an example to illustrate.
- The Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU) evolved from the real-life ASEAN, and comprises Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan and various island countries in the Pacific Ocean.
- The United States of the New Continent (USN) encompasses all of the Americas.
- The European Community (EC) is a federalized evolution of the European Union.note No, I don't know why it uses the name of the EU's even less centralized predecessor. Your guess is as good as mine.
- The Organization of African Consolidation (OAC) is nominally a successor to the African Union, but it excludes the northeastern corner of the continent (Egyptnote Which is marked on one official map of Africa as part of a region that has the text "Afro-Arab Union(?)" on it, but see later., Sudannote including South Sudan, since earlier games predate its secession, and Libya).
- The Republic of Zaftra is a result of the Commonwealth of Independent States' members merging into a single superstate, with the exception of Belarus (canon contradicts itself on whether it refused outright or seceded later), renaming itself "Ranvui".
- The People's Republic of Da Han Zhong (DHZ) is a rebranding of the real-life People's Republic of China, which managed to annex Taiwan.
One source book also adds the "Non-Aligned Territories", which includes the entirety of the Middle East and India. That being said, these supranational polities are not quite monolithic like your typical Space-Filling Empire; the OCU in particular features several of its member states' governments being shown as having their own, sometimes clashing interests, and the EC's own members are treated by the narrative as distinct political entities with their own military forces, though both are ultimately subordinate to the EC's central government and military command (with the exception of certain paramilitary groups that are formally not part of the national militaries, such as Britain's Durandal and Germany's Blauer Nebel).
They also suffer from considerable nationalistic unrest; the USN has to fight rebellions in South America that are driven by the North-South wealth inequality (the one in Venezuela is a major plot driver in the USN side of the story mode in Front Mission 4), the DHZ has to contend with pro-Taiwanese independence militants, the OCU struggles to suppress multiple independence movements among its members, and Zaftra eventually falls into a messy civil war.
So with that in mind, does the setting of Front Mission and others like it qualify for Space-Filling Empire, even if only as a subversion or deconstruction?
Edited by MarqFJAopenLinking to trope subpages outside of their articles
Stupid question probably, but occasionally I see potholes to subpages of tropes on articles instead of the trope itself, e.g. “Trope/RealLife” instead of “Trope”.
I’m assuming potholes like this aren’t allowed? Just wanted to ask to be certain.
openWhat do I move Creator.{{Aja}} to?
What do I move Creator.Aja to? She's a Actress, but also a Rapper, apparently, so I was going to move her to Creator.Aja Rapper...
But rappers are Music, so shouldn't it be Music.Aja Rapper then I turn Music.Aja into a disambig?
Or some other name, still in the Creator namespace and Creator.Aja becomes a disambig between the current and Aja Naomi King?
At least the itself is real easy:

open potential Edit War with Bense in the Hobbit Literature
This other troper and I have been arguing. We can't agree on anything. The problem is that I am willing to keep entries on our debate neutral, and he keeps asserting his point of view as fact. The problem is that his views I just cannot bring myself to leave them be. They simply clash with all my interpretations of the book and I feel a little sick looking at what he treats as fact, since in order to be at peace with it I'd have to change my very moral compass, and I can't just do that on short notice!
openEdit War on ''No Exit''
Stanisz added a bunch of examples to No Exit, with spoiler tags. When somebody adjusted the spoiler tags, Stanisz added the spoiler tags right back, with the text "Fixing your "fixing" of spoiler tags. The fact that [...] doesn't even get obvious for a quite a while, and way to spoil [CHARACTER NAME]'s involvement"
(As you can tell, I removed spoilery information from that quote, since I assume some of you have yet to see the movie.)
Since it's hard to tell what changes were made twice by Stanisz, let me point it out:
- Character names were absent from the below quote. When they were added, as is proper, Stanisz removed them again. (Would have been better to just spoiler them out, if you ask yours truly.)
- Stupid is getting yourself killed for a stranger.- I'm a Marine, you idiot. It's what we do.
- The two final words in They Look Like Everyone Else were spoiler-tagged again.
- Stanisz removed the commenting-out from Crucified Hero Shot after adding that zero-context example originally, but didn't add any info as he removed the commenting-out.
- One paragraph starts with "Darby is a drug addicted no-gooder..." The spoiler-tags at the end of that paragraph were re-added.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, Stanisz also has some grammar trouble. There's article problems, forgetting "a" and "the", though I talked to him about that already, and sentences like "Ochucki starts at one point chewing Hochwander over his Stealing from the Till..."
Edited by MichaelKatsuroopenUsed Future clarification Literature
I need someone to attest if this trope even applies to given situation:
In Missile Gap
, the US government has its resources stretched to a near-breaking point. Most of the equipment, vehicles and what not that is available for civilians comes from the 50s, while the story is set in the 80s (or at the very least tail end of the 70s). And here comes my issue. It isn't exactly "future", at least in a clear, obvious way. However, the story is a serious Mind Screw
- by default, it is a far future, since the whole story is set millions of years in the future, with all characters and the world itself being just a snapshop (probably) of Earth in the wake of the Cuban Crisis and the consequences of that event in the new place; more importantly, characters in-universe are aware of this
- the story itself heavily employs the used gear aesthetics, especially since from in-universe perspective, characters expect new gizmos and design, rather than being reduced to reusing what should be send to a scrapyard decades ago
So... does Used Future work, or there should be other trope used to cover this?
Edited by StaniszopenNattery additions
maxreid had added natter to one of their own examples in Absurdly Spacious Sewer. I sent them a PM over it and then removed the natter (while fixing many other issues in that page). Shortly afterwards, maxreid added another piece of natter in their next edit. I think that one can be salvaged by simply merging it with the example it's put under, but honestly I don't feel like doing it myself. Mostly because maxreid clearly doesn't take the hint, and sending them another PM feels like talking to a wall by this point.
Berserk Button: misusing Nightmare Fuel
open Avoiding an edit war on My Hero Academia - Izuku Midoriya
I removed this example from Characters. My Hero Academia Izuku Midoriya for being misuse:
- Ambiguous Disorder: Two.
- His constant doubting of himself, fear of being perceived as a fraud due to not having obtained his Quirk in a normal way, and his constant feelings of incompetence despite his improvements and achievements heavily suggests he suffers from Imposter Syndrome. This can easily be stemmed from his less than ideal childhood where he was ostracized by others for his Quirklessness and ruthlessly bullied by his former friend, Katsuki Bakugo.
- He may also suffer from Stockholm Syndrome in his friendship with Bakugo. Considering they were once friends before Bakugo deemed Midoriya inferior and worthless due to him growing prideful and arrogant, Midoriya may continue to see Bakugo's positive qualities despite how ruthlessly Bakugo bullied him. Midoriya still considers Bakugo his friend even though Bakugo is often cruel and derogatory towards him.
Ambiguous Disorder examples shouldn't name specific disorders: the trope is about when it's clear that a character has SOME disorder but it's hard to tell which one specifically. Here, it was used to say that it's ambiguous whether he has a specific disorder.
North Wolf then re-added the Imposter Syndrome part of the example, saying that "He may not have Stockholm syndrome, but he still checks a lot of boxes for Imposter Syndrome", which is missing the point of why I removed the example in the first place. I sent a PM but they didn't respond and have had other activity since then.
openWhen's a proper time to start sorting pages into alphabetized folders and/or their own sections?
I know there's a whole process for characters, but I mean if a work itself needs a section dedicated to an #-M, then N-Z on tropes. Of course sometimes they get so big you have to start sorting by individual letter.
open Questionable edit and edit war
On July 4th, 2019
, the troper wrpen99 added Ambiguous Gender Identity as a sub-trope of Artistic License – Biology — this was their only edit at the time, and they provided no edit reason. On September 20th of the same year
, Nubian Satyress deleted this addition. On August 2nd 2021
, wrpen99 re-added it, again their only edit, again no edit reason. 21 days later
, Rena Starfall deleted it. On the 5th of this month
, wrpen99 re-added Ambiguous Gender Identity to the page, again their only edit, again no edit reason.
Now, I see no possible reason why Ambiguous Gender Identity would qualify as Artistic License – Biology. The trope doesn't in any way mention gender identity in relation to biology, only in strictly psychological terms, and the trope itself isn't unrealistic. However, even aside what I see as a persistent agenda on the part of wrpen99, they have undeniably been waging an edit war. I'd like to remove their addition after their suspension, and I'd like a consensus for or against such a decision.
openCut from Trivia?
- While it is no longer a "trope" as such, Elpeo Ple is historically notable for another major reason outside of ZZ's general notability: she was one of the really powerful magnets for "lolicon" fans in the 1980s, and because of the nature of much of her plotline and the nature of a lot of her promotional art
and whatnot, she is often suspected of being one of the first characters in Gundam (and in mainstream Japanese animation as a whole) to be deliberately targeted at this section of the audience. As a result, Ple can be a powerfully divisive figure in some fandom circles; while the show itself never does anything that skeevy with her, the mere fact that she can come across as "loli-bait" has been a contributor to criticisms of ZZ for decades, with a number of fans feeling a character like her has no place in Gundam at all. Others feel she has her place in the overall structure of the show (especially given how she meets her end and the stark contrast between her and her "sister"), and posit that no matter how the character was presented, even in 1986 the lolicons would have obsessed over her no matter what. Even in the 21st century, the arguments can remain heated.
Last I asked, non-"trope" entires shouldn't be added, especially if it's something contentious. Any reason not to cut?
openTurnsRed misuse
self-reporting here since i realized it might unintentionally be an edit war and i want to double check that i have the right idea here... basically on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge there seems to be a persistent misunderstanding of what Turns Red is for
added by me
- Turns Red: When a boss reaches half health, they start flashing red and switching up their attack patterns. The standard boss theme kicks into high gear when this happens.
modified by Alex Tropes Fisher
- Turns Red: In the best traditions of Konami TMNT beat-em-ups.
- When the bosses reach half of their health, they start flashing red and switching up their attack patterns. The standard boss theme kicks into high gear when this happens.
- The same also applies to the playable characters when they get low on health.
inaccurate use of the trope, so i changed it back but kept the added first part and added a Shows Damage entry
- Shows Damage: Both the playable characters and the bosses begin flashing red when low on health. The flashing becomes more intense the lower their health gets.
- Turns Red: In the best traditions of Konami TMNT beat-'em-ups. When the bosses reach half of their health, they start flashing red and switching up their attack patterns. The standard boss theme kicks into high gear when this happens.

changed back by me, since it was a separate user i thought it wouldn't be an edit war but gave an edit reason to explain
- Turns Red: In the best traditions of Konami TMNT beat-'em-ups. When the bosses reach half of their health, they start flashing red and switching up their attack patterns. The standard boss theme kicks into high gear when this happens.

changed back by me, this time removing some of the fluff to hopefully make it more clear what the example is. again, since it's a separate user, my thought was that it isn't an edit war
- Turns Red: The bosses switch up their attack patterns when they reach half their health. The standard boss theme kicks into high gear when this happens.
essentially, it seems that there's a shared misunderstanding between multiple people that Turns Red includes literally flashing red at low health, when the description of it specifically says that's not what it covers. the presence of Shows Damage didn't seem to help. also, i'm not sure if i'm edit warring and realized too late that it might look like that, so i'm sorry if i should have asked earlier. basically, do i have the right idea here?

Recently I've been having problems trying to access the page for Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence because my antivirus keeps blocking the connection with the warning of "URL:Phishing". openSci-fi Tropers Have No Sense of Subpages :P
Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale is currently divided into subpages for Distance, Energy, Mass, etc. A while ago I started seeing the subpages used as trope example entries in their own right, and I've done it a couple of times myself, e.g. linking to SciFiWritersHave. No Sense Of Distance from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S1E01 "Strange New Worlds". But I'm wondering now if that's kosher or if I should have been linking to the top page.

open Misuse in Trivia/AgentAli + Edit War?
Before Ejen Ali was localised to Agent Ali, End Bringer 99 added this example
.
- Saved by the Fans: Years of campaigned led the show being greenlit for a third season, exclusive on Hotstar.
I removed it as misuse
with this edit reason:
Nothing more ever came of this example until about 3 months after I localised the work's pages
, just about 10 days ago, in which EndBringer99 brought back the entry, albeit slightly reworded.
- Saved by the Fans: The fanbase demand saved the show from a three year cancellation.
I sent a message from the edit in question itself to say that I'd give 3 days to await a response/explanation/existence of evidence of cancellation until I'd inquire on ATT. note Is the message formatting by that method different from normal messages? Because I typed it as if the markup would work but it didn't - it looks like a mess of a paragraph. That was on 16th June and now it's an hour past midnight into the 20th in my time, and there've been a couple edits in that user's edit history since after I sent it.
I'm tempted to remove it again but I don't know if that'd account as an edit war, or if EndBringer99 is already in one, because it's technically the same page but under a different (the localised) title.
As I already stated, Saved by the Fans is for characters brought back by popular demand, and its description says that if this happens to a work, that's Un-Cancelled. However, I've found no evidence of Agent Ali ever at risk of being cancelled - there just happens to be a 3 year gap between The Movie (2019) and the upcoming 3rd season (2022).
I still await a response to see if there is any source saying the show was at risk of being cancelled because I've heard no such thing. How should I proceed? Thank you.

(Spoilers for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations.)
The other day, Irodion added an entry
to Characters.Ace Attorney Dahlia Hawthorne which misused Ain't Too Proud to Beg. This is because, as stated on its main page, it applies to a hero and not a villain while Dahlia is the latter. Therefore, I removed it
and explained that in my edit reason. However, they later brought it back
anyway.
Can I have permission to remove this entry? If someone wants to do it yourself, you're free to, though I'd link this post somewhere in your edit reason.
