openGrammar Issues and Other Problems
Astropilgrim 1621 has a consistent issue with grammar, which can be seen both in their TLP comments
and in their normal edits
. I've sent them notifiers and have told them on the TLP itself that their grammar needs work, but they've not listened. The TLP examples are especially important here — On the wiki proper, Astro mostly just edits the media categories. It's on the TLP where their
poor
grammar
really
shines
through
.
Another TLP issue is that they often just show up demanding that certain things be "fixed", even if there's no active sponsor
, despite having been asked in the past to stop
.
I've also noticed bad indentation in a recent edit
, but I don't know if it's become a pattern yet. Notifier has been sent, though.
open Are these long quotes really necessary?
I have a question about these entries from The Critical Drinker:
- Writer on Board: He often accuses movies of being a "personal therapy session" for writers:
- One such example is when he simply compares the appearance of the misunderstood outcast teen daughter protagonist in I Am Not Starfire to her writer, and bursts out laughing at the similarities between them.
- He harshly criticizes Velma for this, accusing it as being nothing more than a Revenge Fic of sorts for the creators who he believes used the main characters as self-inserts:
"The thing that really struck me about Velma is the sheer bitterness and hatred that seems to radiate from it. You really get the sense that this is some kind of emotional colonic irrigation for the writers, like you're witnessing a whole liketime's worth of petty resentments, jealousy, personal grudges, and bitter regrets being vomited up onto the screen in front of you. I dunno if they had a really tough time in high school or something, but I can't shake the feeling that the whole thing is some kind of coping session against anyone who was more rich, more successful, more popular, or more attractive than them. Either way, the attempted humor in Velma just comes across as hateful and nasty instead of funny and insightful."
- He similarly describes Rey of the Disney Star Wars trilogy as being such a thing for Kathleen Kennedy.
"It's no secret at this point that Rey was very much Kathleen Kennedy's baby. Her ultimate vindication for all those coffees she had to make and all those notes she had to take down as a humble secretary in the early days. All those years of slowly working her way upwards, climbing the corporate ladder, being a woman in a man's world. Rey was the culmination of her own life experiences and world view. The perfect idealized vision of how she saw herself: strong, capable, resourceful, independent, supremely talented, and lacking all the flaws and weaknesses of her male counterparts, better than them in every measurable way, and the fact that the character was met with almost universal scorn and derision from the Star Wars fanbase was a thorn in her side that she was determined to pull out no matter how many movies and how much money it requires. You know it's kind of funny when you realize just how petty and immature these 'titans of the movie industry' actually are."
- He accuses Kathleen Kennedy of this again for with Helena from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny describing the character as "yet another addition to the growing lineup of brunette, British, flawless, idealized Kathleen Kennedy self-inserts that are better than their aging male counterparts in every possible way".
"Jesus Christ, and they talk about the male ego!
Are the quotes necessary? Like if we removed them they would be fine expect them Star Wars one which doesn't really explain this trope in my opinion.

Happening in Limbus Company
Edit by me
, on the Good Bad Bugs entry, i changed it from:
- When part 3 of Canto IV came out, there was a bug where Sloth and Wrath Power Up, instead of increasing the respective sin's power by 1 per stack, would increase their damage by 100% per stack instead. This, particularly combined with Yi Sang's already powerful Sunshower EGO and synergystic Spicebush ID, resulted in Yi Sang being able to completely decimate waves by himself and casually deal 4-digit damage to Abnormalities with multiple parts.

Which has the major problem of "100%" being equal to a multiplier of 1, basically saying it increases the sin power damage by 1 per stack, when the bug is about the power increase being more like 100 times because of said bug.
I feel like the other editor misunderstood what "100%" would actually mean in a mathematical context, and i'd like the misunderstanding to be cleared up for them before an Edit War breaks out.
Edited by SomeLibreopen TooBleakStoppedCaring deletions
Kamon The Skunk has been deleting lots of examples this trope under the rational that the work was financially successful therefore people liked it. I feel like this should be obvious, but just because a work is financially successful doesn't mean people liked it. You can complain about something you paid for, and something can be financially successful for other reasons (you really like the director; it wasn't as despair inducing in the beginning and has a huge built in fanbase as a result of the goodwill).
Now some of them probably should be edited or deleted for other reasons anyway, but the edit reason itself is suspect.

openPossible edit war on YMMV/Elements of Justice
Camilla is possibly edit warring on Elements of Justice on the Jerks Are Worse Than Villains entry over whether Diamond Tiara is the one responsible for everything that happened in "Crusading for a Turnabout" or not.
Here's the outline:
- The Jerks Are Worse Than Villains entry was initially added by Camilla on May 28, 2023
.
- The next day, the part of the entry that said Diamond Tiara was indirectly responsible for the victim's death was deleted
by Big Klingy.
- On July 7th, 2023, Camilla added the part about Diamond Tiara being the one responsible for the entire case back
, albeit worded differently.
The reason I say that she is "possibly" edit warring is because I'm not sure if it counts as one if the re-added part is worded differently than the first time, albeit still being essentially the same thing.
I should also point out that Camilla's obsession with Diamond Tiara being responsible for all the events of "Crusading for a Turnabout" has been brought up before on the complaining cleanup thread
, and by Big Klingy themself no less.
openRemoving Instances of Fan Nickname to Refer to a Character Film
Looks like Film.Warrior Of The Lost World and its sub-pages are littered with references to the title character played by Robert Ginty who has No Name Given in the movie and credited as "The Rider" as "The Paper Chase Guy" as he's called in the MST3K episode that covers the film.
Should the instances of "Paper Chase Guy" be changed to "The Rider" to keep the movie page itself self-contained and consistent while adding a Fan Nickname to its YMMV?
openIndexing literature with authors
If you want to index literature on a specific category, i.e Japanese Literature, and the author of the book is listed as one of the authors with a Creator page, are you still supposed to put the book itself in the index, or is that only for books whose author is not listed?
openI noticed something strange (a glitch maybe?)
For some reason, when I was adding tropes, I finished and noticed that the trope I put in doesn't become a redirect to the trope itself, but it instead appears the way I typed it.
For example, when I put in Art Shift, it got displayed as [[Art Shift.]]
Is this a bug, or did I type something wrong?
openself demonstrating
I've been wondering to myself if Master Tigress from Kung Fu Panda, would be able to get a self demonstrating page of her own. I just think it might be fair for her to tell us her stories. Would she get one?
Edited by DrDragster688openProblematic/insulting edits.
Sola 001 made these edits to Anvilicious under YMMV.Star Trek Picard:
- Added to portrayal of the Confederation "much like contemporary First World countries and how they built themselves upon the exploitation of Global South and oppression of anyone who is different or dare to dissident" and "just like how USA still celebrates Independence Day and Thanksgiving despite the historical genocide and continued oppression they commited against natives of the Land."
- Changed "climate change" to "climate crisis" (wouldn't see this as a big issue if not for the other stuff).
- Replaced "if you don't know or don't care about American political issues, this episode may come off as confusing or uninteresting" with "if you don't know or don't care about basic human rights, this episode may come off as triggering and offensive to fragile and selfish snowflakes who is crying as they watched this". (The old version seems suspect in retrospect, but this edit is directly insulting audiences.)
I intend to revert. Any objections or anything to deal with first?
openFFVIII Hyne fanon Videogame
Since this was from 2017, I figured this was a better route than trying to PM—but back then I added a Fanon entry under Final Fantasy VIII's YMMV page describing the phenomenon of ficcers having characters use "Hyne" as a standard bit of blasphemy (e.g. someone yelling "Hynedammit" instead of "goddammit") even though nobody speaks this way in the game itself—instead, they just use God the same way people in Real Life who are agitated, surprised, and/or upset would shout God. This was removed from the game's YMMV page a little while later with no edit reason, although it's still on the overal Final Fantasy page. I only noticed it now but since it would still technically constitute an Edit War, I wanted to bring it up before re-adding it.
openCommon misconceptions listed as Real Life examples
In the Real Life example section of tropes, sometimes examples are listed only to be immediately followed by "but actually that's a common misconception, and not really true".
Take the entire Real Life folder of Draw Sword, Draw Blood:
- Although a popular legend states that a Gurkha "never sheathes his blade without first drawing blood" this is in fact untrue, and the kukri is most commonly employed as a multi-use utility tool rather like a machete. There is no requirement to prick yourself or anyone else before sheathing the blade. However there have been instances of Gurkhas slicing their fingers with it as a practical joke to impress outsiders with their ferocity. It's also been theorized that the "must taste blood" was something that annoyed Gurkhas started telling tourists, to make them stop asking to see the kukris.
- Many Sikhs carry a small steel knife known as a kirpan, as a reminder and a means to protect the innocent from harm. Periodically this has to be taken out and sharpened, but as the blade supposedly cannot be unsheathed unless it is to draw blood, the sharpener supposedly has to nick a thumb or finger with it before putting it away. This, too is a myth.
In reality, while the kirpan is a holy symbol that should only be drawn either for maintenance, to defend oneself or another, or to cut the prasad (a religious offering of food), drawing blood is not necessary.
- Ditto samurai. While some Japanese folklore features the trope, e.g. the Hungry Weapon legend surrounding the swords forged by 16th century smith Muramasa Sengo, real-life samurai were as aware of the safety issues as the Gurkhas and Sikhs
.
These all seem to just be UrbanLegends about these groups (Samurai, Sikhs) rather than the real trope. Should they be removed?
Edited by LB7979openPassive-aggressive editing
Hello. I've noticed some questionable edits that troper Ymirsdaughter has been making to Perverse Sexual Lust. They clearly have an agenda to get the trope renamed, which is not a bad thing in and of itself - I myself would like to see it renamed - but their approach to this is to edit passive-aggressive remarks about the current name into the page description and their own Troper page. Is there a policy for dealing with this type of behaviour?
Edited by mr_copenIs It Okay to Create a Page About ChatGPT? Web Original
The year 2023 is now the year of A.I., especially ChatGPT and AI Generated Artwork.
If it's okay to make, we could make it self-demonstrative, like so:
TropeGPT: Sure! Here's a page about ChatGPT on TV Tropes.
The Laconic page can also be self-demonstrative too:
A chatbot developed by OpenAI that can write whatever the user asks.
- Troper: How do I go back to the unabridged version?
TropeGPT: Here's a link that will take you back to the unabridged version.

This time, it's impracticaltroper for unilateral moves.
Basically, back in May, they moved the page for Jill Roberts from Scream IV
to a different page while we were in the middle of discussing what to do with it. They came to the CSP thread
, explained their reasoning, and admitted they should have left an edit reason. Today, I noticed they created Breaking Bad: Hector Salamanca without discussion or leaving an edit reason again, they merged characters from Better Call Saul into Breaking Bad character pages (I don't disagree with it, but again, no discussion occurred), and created The Walking Dead (2010): Gregory. I've pinged them to the CSP thread to explain themself but I figured I should bring it here too.
openDo memes go on YMMV page if they existed before movie release? Western Animation
An entry on Pixar's Elemental was removed, with the edit reason being that the meme existed before the work was released.
But the majority of the memes on the YMMV page, such as the movie's predictability and a fan-animated video being mistaken for an actual movie leak, also existed before release?
Can I add this back?
EDIT: forgot to mention the entry and link the edit history page.
- "Excuse me! He said no pickles!"Explanation It's become a popular joke to have Ember say that Wade asked for no pickles on his burger, because their Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy dynamic would have prevented Wade to bring up the issue, himself.
open AC formatting issue?
Earlier I sent a private message to a usually reliable helper on this site about this:
"As of now, using the AC (with double square brackets) formatting make them appear as a separate link automatically from others. I think back then some of these look like just simply another stylish way to bold text, and an example of use is seen with GLaDOS's self-demonstrating page, and this is the most atrocious change thanks to how AC now forces a line break between the non-AC text.
Any idea how to help with this? And it's not just this page, a plenty of pages had AC text formatting."
The reply I got was "Ask on Ask The Tropers. I don't know what to do.". I'm not sure either what I could do with that, but the new AC formatting made it...rather uncomfortable for me to try to read through all of the text, especially since the AC formatting is used as self-demonstrated example of AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle.
Edited by JustNormalMusicLoveropenSuggestion of the replacement of Page Quote on "Nuclear Weapons Taboo"
I've already posted on the discussion page a month ago,
but there's no response, so I'll ask here: Can I replace the Page Quote on the nuclear weapons taboo page?
The current Page Quote is:
For me, this page quote puts too much emphasis on Japanese people's "victimizing" attitude about the WW 2, as well as the article itself. As a Japanese person, I should admit that this is basically true, but the page quote seems to give us the false impression that it is the SOLE reason that the Japanese raging against the Atomic Bombings (especially the line "guilt them over it". Isn't it rational to condemn the cruelty of the bombing toward the civilians, which killed them in a brutal way? "There are part of the war machine, so they're not 'civilians'" won't be an excuse). It's like you only focus on the opinion about Holocaust by the Arabs, who think the Jews are "playing the victim" and deflect people from the oppression of Palestinians. The main reason why the Japanese people making the depiction of the nuclear bombings "taboo" is not victimizing themselves in the war, but to condemn the actual cruelty of the nuclear bombings, which was horrible compared with the usual air-raids. This article mentions it too (very briefly though), so I wondered if there's more appropriate page quote. And I've found one
. Here's the translation made by me:
I personally think this is more fitting to the article and the actual taboo in Japan. Not only the statement mentions the cruelty of the nuclear bombings, but also the Japanese people's victimizing attitude on the war. The current one by Sawyer Wallace only mentions the latter one, so I think it's more appropriate in the "Quotes" page (Honestly, I wanted to remove it entirely, but I decided not to do it because it's a violation of the freedom of speech). Of course I can do it myself, but I felt like changing the content without asking anyone would cause trouble (and I'm not an historical expert. My Japanese viewpoint can also be biased too), so I ask here whether I can do it or not.

Sailor Punk Rock added the following to Mabel Pines' entry on Character Perception Evolution:
And here's the edit reason:
I can kind of see where Sailor's coming from, but I think that this bit should, at a bare minimum, be rewritten to read less like it's complaining about people not liking the character.
What do you guys think?
