On the page Logan I made an edit for a speech and then clicked enter to stop an editing mistake which succeeded with the previews. Someone undid the enter causing that editing mistake again. I don't want to fix this myself because it could be confused with an edit war.
Edited by ReynTime250open Please help with the title Film
So there is this old cartoon about a little guy or maybe an insect who has a friend dog. Nobody else can hear him. He once got trapped in a bubble, he made shows and played every character himself, he lived in a clock I think. It's not popular tho. So maybe someone knows what I'm talking about???
open Retroactive Recogntion Joke Film
I was wondering if there is a trope for a joke or reference that doesnt make much sense until alot later. I was looking at the Mallrats page in the Funny section. The original troper (and myself) didnt understand, or even hear, the Junior Masters and Johnson reference by TS. Now thanks to the tv show Masters of Sex - its easy to understand that TS was referencing the Masters and Johnson research team. So another way to ask the question - I have a friend who saw Spaceballs before she saw Empire Strikes back. Once she sees Empire - hopefully, more jokes will make sense. Is there a trope name for that?

open''Fantastic Beasts'' character or ''Harry Potter'' character? Film
A major character from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was moved from the film's character page to a miscellaneous sub-page for the Harry Potter books because he was a part of the backstory for those books. Where does this character belong? For those that have seen the film, I'm talking about Grindelwald, who disguises himself and then acts as the film's main villain while being portrayed by the biggest name in the movie.
openCowboy Wizard In Space Film
I recently deleted a Small Reference Pools example from YMMV.Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, since Small Reference Pools is not a YMMV items. And I left behind an edit-reason explaining so.
Cowboy Wizard in Space
has re-added the example leaving this as his edit-reason:
"Although the trope itself is not specifically coded as YMMV, the entries are too subjective for the main page. I went through the entire YMMV index and was unable to find a YMMV trope that fit the opinions described, and so have added Small Reference Pools back in. If anyone finds a YMMV trope that fits the opinions below, feel free to change it; but for the time being, deleting opinions is against YMMV policy."
Edited by AnddrixopenNext of Kin (1982) Film
Has anyone here seen or heard of Next of Kin (1982)? Because I could really use a bit of help in writing its tropes page. This is mainly down to the fact that I have never actually had the chance to watch the film (though I have heard it's really good) but it also has to do with the fact that I have been getting virtually no real-life social interaction these days, and so I often find myself at a loss for words whenever I try to write something down.
Edited by Scifimaster92open Self discovery trope Film
I am wanting to learn all I can about tropes of self discovery. I am writing a TV show where the protagonist's intention is 'to find herself / to take control of her life / to listen to her own voice' - the framing being that she has led a life of literal seclusion from any world outside of hers and that she has had all of her big life decisions dictated to her by other people.
Here is my question; All tropes that seem to exist around this topic never quite feel like the perfect fit. The 'Journey To Discover Oneself' trope listed on the site is about characters at the end of a movie still questioning after a major event, and out of Booker's 9 basic stories/plots the intention of self discovery seems to lie somewhere between a 'rebirth', 'Rebellion Against The One' and 'Tragedy'.... with a mix of twists on the 'Coming Of Age' trope.
Can anyone help by offering any clear tropes and examples of movies that follow self discovery tropes? Is it too broad of an intention to exist in the confines of a trope? I am surprised a journey to find oneself isn't one of booker's 9 plots, can anyone shed any light on this?
Thank you,
X
openWanda Maximoff's 'redemption arc'? Film
How exactly does Wanda have a redemption arc in the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron when she never acknowledged what she did to her actual <i>victims < /i>? We see her happily Mind Raping all the Avengers, especially Tony Stark. And she doesn't blink when she send the Hulk to an innocent city. First think that she does when she 'joins' to the heroes is warning about one of her victims without mention what she did to him. Then she just joins at the battle because she literally saw that she was going to day and well, maybe she still wanted the planet, you know, to live.
But she immediately is made an Avenger and the shit that she did is never mentioned again. On Captain America: Civil War, she seems remorseful for what happened at Lagos but, what about Johannesburg, she just stepped aside and let Tony and Bruce take the blame?
She seems to be 'remorseful' but not because she is interest in the people's well being, but because they are afraid of them and that changes their perception of her as a victim. The novelization does not mention anything either. So, therefore: she lied to keep her position. When Clint comes to 'rescue her', she doesn't change her mind until he says that she will redeem herself.
Her redemption arc is...? A joke? A gigantic double standard?
openInfinity War Tough Act To Follow Film
From YMMV.Avengers Infinity War:
- Tough Act to Follow: Inevitably, any subsequent "event" movie in the MCU will have a hard time topping this, considering the sheer scale involved. The movie itself has to live up to the hype surrounding preceding critically-acclaimed MCU movies, including Iron Man, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Captain America: Civil War. Comparisons to the Russo-directed Captain America movies - both of which have received stronger critical and public reception than Avengers: Age of Ultron did - feel especially inevitable.
Since it feels too early to call Infinity War truly amazing, would anyone mind if I shortened the entry to this:
- Tough Act to Follow: The movie has to live up to the hype surrounding preceding critically-acclaimed MCU movies, with comparisons to the Russo-directed Captain America movies - The Winter Soldier and Civil War, both of which have received stronger critical and public reception than Avengers: Age of Ultron did - feeling especially inevitable.
openWMG: Karate Kid 2 Film
Chosen is shamed in front of the entire image. He has to make up, but after his actions the entire village will probably disown him, not to mention his family. So he only has two choices-leave in shame and never return or spend his life hunting down Daniel. OK, Daniel's still alive in the sequel, but that's only because Chozen was making himself stronger, and eventually he located Daniel (Miyagi was training Hilary Swank and so couldn't rescue Daniel)...what do we think?
Edited by FurtivePigopenEdits to YMMV/TheForceAwakens Film
I noticed on The Force Awakens that Clint Rider deleted a bunch of articles/commentary criticizing the identification of Rey as a Mary Sue as well as added some equivocating language that "In general, there are valid argument that can be made either way, but are likely to still attract criticism."
In general, he basically deleted everything criticizing criticism of he movie, especially if directed against MRA types. And changed some entries to be more critical toward the movie.
His edit reason is "What "controversy?" Glorified muckrakers making clickbait headlines aside (And the Fury Road boycott never happened, the only evidence of its existence was said muckrakers who are known for lying), Furiosa got next to no criticism. Also, I don't see the point of actually including Waid and Del Toro's comments as their own thing- the point is already made enough as is."
Edit- Incidentally, was looking at some of their recent edits and while the example itself probably violated The Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement, on Ghostbusters (2016), there was an entry about how the attacks on Leslie Jones by Milo Icantspellhislastname and his followers finally got him kicked off of twitter, he deleted the entry and gave this edit reason: "Debatable, given how Leslie Jones has a lot of skeletons in her own closet, especially in relation to doing the exact same things Milo did. If you wanna say stuff like that, then politely take it to your tumblr."
So yeah, my MRA alarm is going off.
Edited by Hodor2openRemaking Of The The Eye Creatures: Namespace Film
Since Attack of the The Eye Creatures was purified, I'd like to re-create its original version where it belongs, which means in one of the "fun" namespaces. However, I'm not sure whether it should be in Just for Fun (which was my first hunch) or Self-Demonstrating...
Edited by Medinocresolved Causes of death on Famous Last Words Pages Film
On the Famous Last Words for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems that the cause of death of the person speaking the last words is included with the names of the person. Most other pages don't do that and some of the example come across as rather lengthy and unnecessary. Here's an example Agent Antoine "Trip" Triplett, who smashes the Obelisk to try to stop whatever was happening, but thinks that Skye was fatally petrified and that he made a Senseless Sacrifice. He himself ultimately gets Taken for Granite and shattered before he Skye break free and reawaken as the Inhuman, Quake.. If the page is just meant to show the last words, is all that really necessary?
open Is there a trope for anachronically uniformized armies? Film
Almost all movies displaying vast armies have their mooks wearing absolute identical gear, even when the time period or the social structure should not allow standardized mass production (look the Trojan army in Troy for example).
Of course it is perfectly understandable to do so (help the viewer to identify the sides in battle, make the faceless mooks even more indiscernable from each other and naturally reduce production costs) but it is still an artifact. So shouldn't it be a trope in its own right? Anachronism Stew doesn't mention it (I agree it's a pretty minor anachronism, especially when the gear is at least correct in itself for the time period, but it's also extremely common)
That's mainly a concern when the time depicted is pre-modern. Stormtroopers or British redcoats naturally have the level of industrialization required to field their soldiers a standardized uniform, but medieval (including medieval fantasy) or ancient troops shouldn't be able to (it doesn't mean that they must be completely disparate: the Rohirrim in the LOTR trilogy avert the standardized aspect and still look coherent. On the other side the soldiers of Gondor play the uniformized part straight, with even the archers wearing the exact same plate armor as everyone else. Finally Saruman's Uruk would be a justified example since we see them mass produce their gear, and industrialization is a big part of Saruman's characterization in the books).
Edited by scarpeopen Troper behavior in The Hateful Eight pages Film
I would like to ask how to proceed about the behavior of BebeJumeau on several pages relating to The Hateful Eight, were he or she seem determined to impose the view that the character of Daisy Domergue is a victim completely undeserving of the treatment she receives in the movie. To wit:
1) Asshole Victim entry
On 31st Dec '15 5:48:19 PM wdfan added the Asshole Victim to Daisy’s section of the The Hateful Eight page.
On 26th Feb '16 9:46:57 AM BebeJumeau removed Asshole Victim from Daisy’s section claiming the trope was based on personal opinion.
On 27th Feb '16 11:08:57 AM GKG put the trope back, rightfully pointing out that Asshole Victim is not a YMMV trope so it is perfectly valid to put it in the characters’ page.
On 5th Mar '16 5:42:46 AM BebeJumeau once again removed the trope from the Daisy’s section without explanation.
On 8th Mar '16 7:28:16 PM plcthecd put the trope back, requesting that BebeJumeau stop removing it without explanation.
On 9th Mar '16 11:34:48 AM BebeJumeau once again deleted the trope, claiming that because her death was cruel and her crimes never explained then her death wasn’t justified. You will notice this has nothing to do with the meaning of the trope.
On 9th Mar '16 2:36:17 PM I entered the picture and put the trope back, arguing that as a criminal and member of a and of criminals who is victimized by the other characters Daisy qualifies as Asshole Victim.
On 9th Mar '16 8:18:23 PM BebeJumeau once again deleted the trope claiming that YMMV was being presented as fact.
On 9th Mar '16 9:09:45 PM I put the trope back, with a more detailed explanation for why the character qualifies for it.
On 10th Mar '16 1:10:28 PM BebeJumeau once again removed the trope, arguing that the word asshole itself was “crass” and replacing it with Anti-Villain, a trope that does not fit the character as she displays no “heroic goals, personality traits, and/or virtues” whatsoever.
At this point I decided not to add the trope back so as to avoid getting into an Edit War, but I would like to ask how to proceed about this issue.
2) Fandom Heresy & Fetish Fuel entries
On 19th Feb '16 1:21:26 PM BebeJumeau added the Fandom Heresy trope to the The Hateful Eight page
On 19th Feb '16 10:15:48 PM GKG deleted this trope from the page.
On 20th Feb '16 10:53:40 AM BebeJumeau put it back.
On 10th Mar '16 12:47:09 PM BebeJumeau added the Fetish Fuel trope to the The Hateful Eight page along with a quite extensive explanation about why Daisy’s treatment in the movie was gratuitously exploitative for fetish’s sake, which she constantly expanded on 10th Mar '16 12:52:28 PM, 10th Mar '16 12:54:44 PM, 10th Mar '16 12:56:57 PM
On 10th Mar '16 1:01:08 PM Discar deleted both tropes because: “Fetish Fuel doesn't get examples, and not an example of Fandom Heresy.”
On 10th Mar '16 9:09:04 PM BebeJumeau put back Fandom Heresy and at 9:26:04 PM put back the large text that was previously under Fetish Fuel under the Alternative Character Interpretation entry, without using any spoiler tagging for the spoilers contained in it. Then further expanded the text at 9:31:14 PM.
On 11th Mar '16 2:30:37 AM Discar once again had to delete the Fandom Heresy entry.
3) Demonization
On 9th Mar '16 12:05:30 PM BebeJumeau added the Demonization trope to the main The Hateful Eight while at 12:26:29 PM adding it to Daisy’s section of the The Hateful Eight page.
On 9th Mar '16 2:41:14 PM I removed it from The Hateful Eight page and at 2:49:52 PM from the main The Hateful Eight page, as it is my understanding that this trope only applies when a character or concept is purposely made to look as evil, when in fact they’re not, and there’s not evidence that Daisy is being presented by the movie as more evil than she is.
On 9th Mar '16 8:18:23 PM BebeJumeau added back the entry in the in the The Hateful Eight page claiming that Daisy was “demonised way disproportionally”
On 9th Mar '16 9:01:45 PM I removed it once again with a more detailed explanation as to why.
On 10th Mar '16 11:17:17 AM BebeJumeau added it again to the in the The Hateful Eight page, and at 12:23:38 PM to the main page, arguing that the amount of punishment the character receives compared to the other characters warranted that trope.
I disagree with this interpretation but at this point I decided not to delete it again on either page so as to avoid getting into an Edit War, but I would like to ask how to proceed about this issue.
Overall, I would like to ask the mods how to proceed from this point forward, as I believe that any further attempts on my part to correct the improper use of the tropes in the The Hateful Eight pages will inevitably result in an Edit War, as shown by BebeJumeau’s behavior over the course of several months and involving several tropers, one of them a P5.
Thank you for your time.

I apologize for the unusually poor style in the example for Twilight: Los Angeles I left on Keep Circulating the Tapes; right now, I feel screwed over due to not just my DVD recorder refusing to capture it at all but also PowerDirector dropping frames on an attempted recording of the last broadcast for the foreseeable future. Times like these, I really wish my favorite programs would be released on DVD. I also apologize if I'm not making any sense; I feel so angry about the situation, I don't know if I'm even making sense to MYSELF.

Whats the tv show or movie called about a black girl and guy who are married and have a black daughter, and the daughters boyfriend leaves her and goes to jail while she is pregnant and carrying the baby that her mom wants, but she is in love with her moms husband, and he likes her too but doesn't want the mom to know... the pregnant girl ends up getting hit by a car which the mom is driving because she wants the baby but she thinks that her daughter wants to keep it for herself..?
