Ask the Tropers:
resolved Internet Backdraft/Marvel Cinematic Universe has a stupid entry Film
On Marvel Cinematic Universe there's this entry:
- A theory has been springing up that Marvel are sabotaging the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises in order to weaken Fox's success with their films, noting their reduced presence in the comicsnote which isn't true; the X-Men are currently one of the biggest lines they're producing, with more spin-offs than ever, Wolverine and Deadpool dying note which is no different than any other 'big shocking deaths', and is being used to launch several miniseries attracting tons of publicity to the X-Men line as it is, the Fantastic Four comic being cancellednote which has been underselling for a while, and while not the worst seller, it's still been pretty bad and doesn't have the cult following that their other books have, lack of merchandise produced for X-Men: Days of Future Pastnote which wasn't true; there weren't any children's toys produced, which is largely down to licensing issues; they still sold Hot Toys collectibles for them though, are still selling toys for the franchise in general, and sold toys for the film before that, their reduced appearances in recent animated seriesnote ignoring that Wolverine did get an animated movie and has appeared in their other cartoons, and a memo apparently sent out asking for artists to not send them Fantastic Four artworknote the validity of this memo is questionable at best. The theory itself makes little sense, but hasn't stopped people buying into it, including Rob Liefeld note Liefeld's creations are tied with Fox's licenses, so of course he'd be on their side over this.
- Disney's acquisition of Fox. Beyond the "Yay, X-Men and the Fantastic Four can be in the MCU!" cheering, fans were concerned about how Disney continued to acquire a huge amount of popular IPs to the point of becoming a near monopoly.
The first one is iffy in its own right, but the second bullet is my concern today. A couple of things:
1. This isn't about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's about Disney. The only connection the MCU really has to this is that Marvel Studios, the guys who oversee it, are owned by Disney. Unless the entry is alleging that Disney spent $71.3 billion acquiring the Fox film assets primarily to get the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, in which case... yeah, I totally believe that. TOTALLY.
2. In all seriousness, Disney didn't do this because they thought Marvel Studios needed two more franchises. They did it because they want to bulk up their collective film library in preparation for going into the streaming market. Remember, Disney+ launches later this year, and Disney wants to leverage their majority control of Hulu to push for an international release around the same time, with the stated goal of being a place to put their adult-leaning content. That's why this happened.
3. For the record, this entry is heavily biased, mentioning the backlash to the decision to greenlight the acquisition while dismissing ANY praise or excitement as just people being excited for certain franchises; call me crazy but I don't think it's as bad as this entry makes it out to be.
4. This is a minor complaint compared to the preceding three, but it's also an example of bad indentation. It's got nothing to do with the preceding entry other than that they both involve Fox. I mean, seriously?
Look, my vote is to just delete it, but I wanted to at least make sure I consulted the community to see if that's the only workable solution, because I get the feeling that SOMEONE is going to want to talk about it on the wiki SOMEWHERE and it's worth figuring out where, if anywhere, is an appropriate place to do so.
Edited by MinisterOfSinisteropenProcedure to get unsourced trivia removed?
I found a trivia entry on a trivia page that I can't find a source for and I think is likely false. My question is, is there a procedure one can follow to get trivia entries removed? I'd remove it myself, but someone else added it and I don't want to start an edit war.
openFlim-Flam's Scrappy Status Western Animation
The Scooby-Doo character named Flim-Flam had a Scrappy status that was worse than the trope namer himself. Why did people hate him?
openAndTheFandomRejoiced / KidIcarus
I intend to cut AndTheFandomRejoiced.Kid Icarus since the only correct example (others were not pre-release announcements so misused) is the announcement of the game itself, which is covered under AndTheFandomRejoiced.Nintendo.
Any objections?
For future reference is there a dedicated thread for discussing page cuts?
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenDeleting the Pantheonic Voice Actor Database English Voice Actors
I thought it will be better to ask this since I don't think I'll get any responses to it's discussion page or in the cut list request I made. I decided to split it into two pages with the usual lettering. I did made the request in the cut list, but I don't know if I'll get any responses, which is why I also asked here. I decided to do this because the page is too long and although there are some actors that are too low-profile with only one role given in the databse and might not be expecting any additions anytime soon (which means I could delete those with one roles), there is a chance for them to get new added ones in the database if there is a new addition in the Pantheon, which is why I think it's best to split it to two pages. Also, I already made the two pages without thinking of making a sandbox for it because I wasn't informed that you need to ask the Cut List for it and I made the split pages before being informed by the current page itself that you need to inform the Cut List to actually delete it.
Edited by louisent31openHow to handle foreign-only spoilers?
Hayate the Combat Butler is completed in Japan, but in English it's only up to volume 33. Because of this, there's a large amount of content that is currently unavailable to an English reader.
My questions are:
- If I see an example referencing a later volume, should I remove it?
- If I organized a cleanup effort for the above, how would I avoid spoiling it for myself?
openDetective with a Twist? Live Action TV
I've seen a lot of shows & movies where the main character is a cop/detective/'helps the police' who is a ghost, vampire, zombie, android, dog, dinosaur, immortal, Satan, and many, many more. How would you classify this trope? I think it isn't quite the same as "Wunza Plot" or "They Fight Crime!" since it's specifically regarding the character herself as a sort of "detective with a twist" type rather than her relationship with another different, possibly more normal character (although that does often play a role).
Edit: I stumbled onto the page for "The Exotic Detective" which I think is the answer I was looking for.

I was going to make an edit to Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, but I'm not sure it's a proper example.
- I Always Wanted to Say That: Inverted by Skipper. After Vitaly convinces the other circus animals to [[Spoiler: forgive the Zoosters]], the former has this to say:
Also, just to clarify, Skipper is using "Rooskie" as a synonim for "Russian", and has been doing so ever since he first met Vitaly. And any self-respecting American who remembers the whole "Better dead than Red" debacle in WWII can understand why Skipper would invoke said inversion.
Edited by GofastmikeopenWhich Tropes Are These? Web Original
I have questions about tropes in The JWL. I think these might be examples of Morton's Fork or The Chessmaster or Batman Gambit but I'm really not sure.
At JWL SuperBrawl I
, the main event was the 22-woman Royal Rumble for the JWL Women's Title
. Jacqueline came in at #8 and, to everyone's surprise, singlehandedly eliminated Chyna. Instead of staying in the match, Jackie eliminated herself and she and Chyna fought to the back. The following night, on Episode 22
, Jackie challenged Chyna to a match at JWL WrestleMania I
. Jackie won a Squash Match on Episode 23. After winning a Squash on Episode 24, Jackie called out Chyna to accept her challenge, and here is where the tropes I am asking about come into play.
CHYNA: "Look Jackie, you're the only one who would benefit from this match. I beat you, big deal, I beat someone much smaller than me. You beat me, I end up looking weak because I lost to someone smaller. I have nothing to gain. So give me one good reason why I should face you at WrestleMania."
JACQUELINE: "Because if you don't, I'll tell everyone week after week that you are a coward! That you ain't got the guts to face me. I will torment you and make your life a living hell. In fact, I'm raising the stakes. You versus me at WrestleMania in a Loser-Leaves-the-JWL match!"
Crowd pops at the thought of being rid of Chyna. Chyna is on the spot now and has to respond.
CHYNA: "I admit it would feel really good to kick your ass out of the JWL and prove that I am superior. You're on for the Loser-Leaves-the-JWL match at WrestleMania!"
Along with identifying which tropes these were, should they be listed on the main page or the character sheets? Thank you very much.
Edited by KJTropesopenPokémon Woolseyisms
After comparing a bunch of Pokémon dubbed episodes to their subbed counterparts, I think that the series deserves a woolseyism page unto itself. With the original dub, at least, there’ve been a bunch of clever changes to the original script, far more than I could list here. Permission to create?
openWham Line v. Wham Shot
Are the two tropes mutually exclusive? Wham Shot says it's a "purely visual version" of Wham Line, while Wham Line refers to the line of dialogue changing the scene all by itself.
But at TheOrderOfTheStick.Tropes V To Z, several bulletpoints of each trope are not only the exact same comics, but the same panels of the comic. I've seen it happen in other instances, too.
Should they be chopped and/or put in only one of the tropes?
openUnintentionally Unsympathetic Live Action TV
Would Unintentionally Unsympathetic apply to an entire populace? The trope is being used to defend a character's choice to mass slaughter its civilian population, owing to the crappy acts some of its citizens have pulled. The example itself is on the YMMV page
as the last bullet point under Unintentionally Unsympathetic. There is currently a discussion going on here
and it seems to be at a stand-still.
openNot suited for this subpage?
An entry in OvershadowedByControversy.Live Action TV seems more like it was written to bash Donald Trump himself instead of his TV series The Apprentice.
This is the entry in question:
- Donald Trump's remarks towards Mexican illegal immigrants in his opening campaign speech for the 2016 presidential election led to such backlash that it resulted in both the Miss Universe pageant and his show, The Apprentice taken off of NBC. His continued remarks, controversial views, unexpectedly successful election as the President of the United States in 2016, scandal-ridden career, campaign, and presidency, and record low approval rating has resulted in the programs that were once his largest direct contribution to pop culture becoming just mild footnotes in his story.
As can be seen, the only two live action TV series' are mentioned in passing and, unlike other examples on the page, seems to focus more on the person, so I would assume this was placed in the wrong subpage.
openAnAdventurerIsYou on Work pages.
How should the An Adventurer Is You trope be noted on Work pages? I ask because the following entry is from the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar page (talking about one of its Gaiden Games) and ,quite apart from the Zero-Context Example problem, it does take up a lot of space (which is why I put it in a folder) due to the fact that the game has expanded to include a many of the Hero characters from its parent game over time.
- An Adventurer Is You: The heroes in Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower qualify:
- Knight-Questor: Tank - A dedicated brick wall who can pull enemies closer and keep them there indefinitely.
- Knight-Venator: Archer/Blademaster - Fast, agile and equipped with heavy armour. He can shoot even in melee and his arrows are accurate and powerful.
- Lord-Celestant: Scrapper/Archer
- Lord-Relictor: Nuker/Healer
- Lord-Castellant: Jack - Can do everything from fighting in melee, dealing some ranged damage, stunning and healing. There are lots of heroes who can do each of these individual tasks better, but few who can turn their hand to so many.
- Knight-Azyros: Nuker/Buffer
- Knight-Heraldor: Buffer
- Knight-Vexillor: Buffer/Debuffer
- Battlemage: Archer/Buffer
- Excelsior Warpriest: Healer/Beastmaster - He is capable of healing and smashing heads alike, and is also accompanied by a Gryph-hound companion.
- Loremaster: Nuker/Scrapper/Buffer
- Mistweaver Saih: Debuffer/Nuker - Focuses on throwing magic missiles, stunning and annoying the hell out of enemies.
- Sorceress: Nuker - All about blasting enemies to smithereens with magic missiles, which can be further fuelled if necessary by sacrificing wounds.
- Black Ark Fleetmaster: Scrapper
- Assassin: Archer/Backstabber
- Tenebrael Shard: Scrapper - An assasin that can jump from shadow to shadow and has supernatural skills for assasination.
- Nomad Prince: Archer
- Warden King - Tank
- Runelord - Nuker/Buffer/Debuffer
- Unforged - Blademaster/Scrapper
- Fyreslayer Doomseeker: Blademaster - He wants to get stuck in and gets better if enemies are hitting him and when he's killing stuff.
- Auric Runemaster: Buffer/Nuker - A support hero with mediocre weapons but useful defense buffs and splash damage attacks.
- Grimwrath Berzerker: Scrapper/Regenerator
- Battlesmith: Buffer/Scrapper
- Cogsmith: Archer
- Saurus Oldblood: Tank/Blademaster
- Skink Starpriest: Nuker/Debuffer
- Darkoath Chieftain: Scrapper
- Lord of Chaos: Tank/Blademaster
- Chaos Sorcerer Lord: Nuker/Buffer
- Slaughterpriest: Scrapper/Healer - A beatstick who can heal himself and his friends by chopping up enemies and who can make enemies' blood boil.
- Exalted Deathbringer (with Impaling Spear): Scrapper
- Exalted Deathbringer (with Ruinous Axe): Blademaster/Scrapper
- Aspiring Deathbringer: Blademaster
- Bloodstoker: Buffer - He is able to whip allies to fury but otherwise has very mediocre attacks.
- Skullgrinder: Scrapper
- Bloodsecrator: Nuker/Buffer
- Lord of Plagues: Regenerator/Blademaster - A meatshield who can keep himself in the fight for a long time and his attacks have some nasty side effects.
- Tzeentch Sorcerer Lord: Nuker/Mezzer - He has a powerful missile weapon that can cause splash damage and since he also serves Tzeentch he can control enemies to an extent.
- Skaven Warlord: Backstabber/Scrapper
- Grey Seer: Nuker
- Great Bray-Shaman: Debuffer/Buffer/Mezzer - Capable of buffing allies, as well as stunning and controlling enemies to some degree but has very weak damage by himself.
- Necromancer: The Minion Master - His main gimmick is to overwhelm enemies with hordes of weak skeletons.
- Wight King: Regenerator/Blademaster
- Orruk Weirdnob Shaman - Nuker
- Orruk Warchanter - Scrapper
- Savage Orruk Warboss - Tank/Blademaster
- Grot Shaman - Buffer/Debuffer
openBanned user BornOfSelf is back for... how many goddamn times has this been?

openTropesInPinballGames mess of an index
Tropes in Pinball Games is listed as an index, but the page itself is some weird hybrid of simple tropes for that index and multi-bullet-point examples.
Since the entire page is marked as an index, it all gets pulled onto the same index.
So for example, there's actual intentional tropes like Pinball Scoring followed by a Creator Page (Gottlieb) and all throughout the article there's examples of a trope occurring within a work, so that work gets indexed as well (so there's tons of actual Pinball work pages on the index like Shrek).
How would we disentangle this? Just chop/merge all those secondary bullet points?
Edited by DarkarosopenHow do I make redirect pages of Mainspace tropes?
Reading Anti-Frustration Features, its lead paragraph mentions that the term is sometimes called "Quality of Life" features. But when I look below the Alternative Title(s) part below the page, there is no such thing as "Quality of Life" redirecting to this page.
How would I make a Quality Of Life page that redirects to Anti-Frustration Features? I want the alternative term to be displayed below, but when I tried to make the page myself, the site always redirects me to the Trope Launch Pad
Edited by DanteVinopenHow do you invoke a YMMV trope?
So I'm writing an In-Universe example of a YMMV trope, as part of what the author wanted to communicate. However, I don't remember how to invoke it in the article itself.
openWhere to link for a work Literature
I want to add an example to The Social Expert for a character from Warhammer 40k. Here's the problem.
- The character is omnipresent in the setting
- The scene that I want to use specifically as an example comes from a book, that we don't have a page specifically for
- The book itself is a combination of game rules and storyline (my example is from the storyline part)
Should I link to Warhammer 40,000 or to the book itself as a redlink? Should the example be under Literature or Tabletop Game?

The page WebVideo.Loading Ready Live currently acts as a collective works page for the shows that LoadingReadyRun streams on their Twitch channel. The problem is that "LoadingReadyLive" is no longer the name of their Twitch channel, and it hasn't been for quite some time, it's now the name of a specific show.
So what should be done with this page? I see two possible options:
There's also the issue that "LoadingReadyRun" is both the name of the group itself and also the name of their (pre-recorded) comedy sketches. Should we have WebVideo.Loading Ready Run focus just on the sketches and move everything else over to Creator.Loading Ready Run? Or should we make WebVideo.Loading Ready Run Sketches? Or is this one not that big of a deal?
