opencharacter image assistance Anime
Hi, I'm requesting assistance with adding a character image to Yan-Min's folder on the Venus Academy page, because her role has become major enough to warrant it. The image I'd suggest is this one.
I figured I'd ask here, since I'm unable to do it myself. Any help would be appreciated.
openWanda Maximoff's 'redemption arc'? Film
How exactly does Wanda have a redemption arc in the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron when she never acknowledged what she did to her actual <i>victims < /i>? We see her happily Mind Raping all the Avengers, especially Tony Stark. And she doesn't blink when she send the Hulk to an innocent city. First think that she does when she 'joins' to the heroes is warning about one of her victims without mention what she did to him. Then she just joins at the battle because she literally saw that she was going to day and well, maybe she still wanted the planet, you know, to live.
But she immediately is made an Avenger and the shit that she did is never mentioned again. On Captain America: Civil War, she seems remorseful for what happened at Lagos but, what about Johannesburg, she just stepped aside and let Tony and Bruce take the blame?
She seems to be 'remorseful' but not because she is interest in the people's well being, but because they are afraid of them and that changes their perception of her as a victim. The novelization does not mention anything either. So, therefore: she lied to keep her position. When Clint comes to 'rescue her', she doesn't change her mind until he says that she will redeem herself.
Her redemption arc is...? A joke? A gigantic double standard?
openStaying Neutral
tdwally just made a huge Imperial-biased edit on Characters.Skyrim Civil War.
I freely admit to being Stormcloak aligned myself, but that page is kindling waiting to be ignited and should be kept as neutral as possible to not piss off half of the fandom. Thoughts?
I would like to point out that one edit compared the Stormcloaks to the Forsworn, basically saying they're no different than a group of cannibals who have committed several acts of mass-murder.
openSelf-Demonstrating Article: Doomguy Videogame
Hello Tv Tropes admins, i need your help because i want to know if it's safe to make another Self-Demonstrating Article, if some admin see this, please answer in the instant so you will make me know, thank you
open"bloat" definition. Web Original
So I stumbled across the useful notes / Asperger syndrome page. Since I myself am an aspie, I naturally thought I could provide *very* helpful input there. But when I clicked the edit button, I was taken to the "locked page" article (I'm somewhat new to this site, so it was only then that I even learned about the lock mechanism). So I did as the description instructed, but saw that the Asperger syndrome article was locked because it "Attracted bloat." Those were the only two words in the entire explanation, and neither were blue. So can someone explain to me what "bloat" is? Also, This Very Wiki falls under Web original, right?
openNotEvilJustMisunderstood, seem to be greatly misundertood
I'm planing to remove many examples from it, and think it's better to post here for record first(because aside from my very recent post the last entry in discussion was from 2014).
I think the trope need better description. The current description put too much emphasis on "Not Evil" part but almost completely ignoring Just Misundertood part. From my impression, a character being "Not Evil" isn't as important as (people) "Just Misundertood" the chaarcter. In this trope context, "evil" is likely include "harmful/dangerous". Lets say we have a Classical Movie Vampire, the character may simply feed for sustain himself and not really malice (not evil), but there's no misunderstanding that he kill and feed on humans. So he can't be this trope, else the description of this trope will be narrowed to "any villain/antagonist that doesn't use For the Evulz as motivation" (which make it People Sit on Chairs).
I think the condition should be that
- The character mean no harm to anyone
- In case that it accidently cause harm (alien mind, Does Not Know His Own Strength, or other reason), it must at least has aversion to does so once become aware of this
- People mistaken its action/intention as harmful one.
Blue-and-Orange Morality shouldn't be excuse here, else there won't be Just Misunderstood part. A robotic army programmed to kill every lives is not evil, and likely not aware that what they're doing is wrong, but there's no misunderstood part - they're really out to kill everything.
Just read the examples, we've "totally evil (Psychopathic Manchild who kills and eats people for fun), but she's raised that way" (no misundertood part), "totally evil, but used to be The Woobie" (no misundertood part, they're dangerous now), "doing evil things but has Well-Intentioned Extremist motive" (Necessarily Evil is still evil, and usually no misunderstood part. A dictator who Take Over the World to bring everlasting peace is still taking over the world with force.) Really, I think it need to be fixed.
Any opinion?
Edited by KuruniopenBuffySpeak self-demonstrating folder titles
There was a Wiki Talk thread
a while ago about changing self-demonstrating folder titles, reaching the consensus that they should be "strongly discouraged", in most cases getting rid of them, and rarely keeping them if they're "concise, witty, and don't mess with clarity too much". In Nov '14, the Buffy Speak article was changed to normal folder titles. In Mar '15, bowserbros reverted to the SD folder titles with no edit reason. I'd like to re-revert them, but it's a big change and also may be construed as an edit war, wanted to check here first.
open Fanworks
Hey, how does one get a fanworks page for their fic? Does someone else have to make it, do you ask someone to or do you do it yourself? I'd really like to know how to get one.
openMetal Gear Character name pages Videogame
The character pages for Metal Gear list characters in the order in which they appear in the series. Major spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk.
SIGINT is listed on Characters.Metal Gear Solid, because MGS 4 reveals he's Donald Anderson. By this logic, there are several characters on Characters.Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain who don't belong there. Venom Snake should be in Characters.Metal Gear 1 and Eli, Tretij Rebinok, and Ishmael should have their tropes moved to their original character pages. The Man on Fire being Volgin gets a pass because it's basically its own entity. In fact, Big Boss himself should be moved from Characters.Metal Gear 1 to Characters.Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake.
I know these give away huge spoilers, but if we're going to do it for SIGINT then we need to be consistent and do it for all the other characters.
open Self discovery trope Film
I am wanting to learn all I can about tropes of self discovery. I am writing a TV show where the protagonist's intention is 'to find herself / to take control of her life / to listen to her own voice' - the framing being that she has led a life of literal seclusion from any world outside of hers and that she has had all of her big life decisions dictated to her by other people.
Here is my question; All tropes that seem to exist around this topic never quite feel like the perfect fit. The 'Journey To Discover Oneself' trope listed on the site is about characters at the end of a movie still questioning after a major event, and out of Booker's 9 basic stories/plots the intention of self discovery seems to lie somewhere between a 'rebirth', 'Rebellion Against The One' and 'Tragedy'.... with a mix of twists on the 'Coming Of Age' trope.
Can anyone help by offering any clear tropes and examples of movies that follow self discovery tropes? Is it too broad of an intention to exist in the confines of a trope? I am surprised a journey to find oneself isn't one of booker's 9 plots, can anyone shed any light on this?
Thank you,
X
open Jana Whitaker in YOLO (internet girls #4) Literature
does she cut or she depressed? (ie. there's a part in yolo that says something like "why would jana post about almost cutting herself?" she gained a lot of weight, and the status updates the winsome threesome report on her, are very upsetting?)
openCurbing What An Idiot entries
The more I read the subpages, the more I think that we really need to cut a lot of the What An Idiot entries. A lot of them are just general mistakes rather than idiocy. It just seems like a dumping ground at this point.
I would do it myself, but I don't know if I have the time to do it. Also, I feel like I would need permission to do so.
Edited by SatoshiBakuraopenNo religion in historical fantasy
So I've been watching Merlin the BBC show, and I've been enjoying it but I've had one major issue. Their is no Christianity, which is really weird given the setting. It's set in a post Roman but pre Saxon Britian. Uther Pendragon, The King of Camelot is committed to stamping out magic and The Old Religion. Now an Old Religion implies a new religion, but this new religion is never mentioned. Pendragon's anti magic crusade is a purely personal thing, he has no larger ideological justification of any kind.
Now, it's obvious what that that new religion should be. Christianity, a faith that did cleanse older pagan faiths from the British isles. But it never appears, not a priest not even a cross in the background. It's kind of annoying.
This isn't the first semi historical thing that does this, some versions of Marvel Comics have Captain America fight Hydra and never even mention Hitler. So my question, is their a name for this kind of thing? When semi historical fiction air brushes out whole parts of the history it nominally bases itself on?
openAvoiding an EditWar Videogame
Nintendoer asked a meta question on Headscratchers.Pokemon Sun And Moon. I deleted it with this note: "This question is more appropriate for Discussion or a Forum thread. Headscratchers is for questions about the game itself, not meta fan theories." They promplty readded the question. Is Headscratchers the appropriate place?
Edited by ChaoticQueenopenExtremely Short Timespan
Does Extremely Short Timespan require that the plot happen in 3 days or less? Because I've got this example and I don't know if it fits:
"This game takes place over a far shorter amount of time than any other main series game: just under a month, excluding DLC. Case 1 starts on April 23, case 5 ends on May 19. Only the Investigations games cover less time. To wit, Case 3 ends on May 12, and Case 4 takes place on May 13... with the same prosecutor. In a different country. And he somehow familiarized himself with rakugo tradition in preparation. However, the DLC case, Turnabout Time Traveler, takes place after a four month timeskip."
For those who don't know, the example is from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, a game belonging to the Ace Attorney series. The plot in the games in this series usually spans through half a year or more, yet in this game it all takes place in less than a month.
Edited by GosicrystalopenAbout tropers who make pages of their own fanfics/roleplays?
What is the general opinion on such Tropers?
On the one hand, I myself have taken an interest in a lot of videogames and movies I wouldn't have given a second glance because of TV Tropes and find it justifiable on the grounds that it would give it more exposure to the Troper's works.
On the other hand, it seems like the sort of thing that a very annoying person would do.
So, thoughts?
EDIT:
Conclusion:
1. The Troper's intention must not be to advertise his work.
2. The Troper must not point out the reactions of the audience.
3. The Troper must not act like a self-aggrandizing twat that praises his work's quality.
4. If there is criticism to be had, the Troper has no right to censor it. And if he ends up hating his work and wants the page gone, then too bad. It's here forever.
Opinions however, are either: "You can do that, but it's best others put it here" Or: "Eh, sure. Knock yourself out, just follow the rules"

Hello, I was wondering - Is there a way to make a self demonstration page? I'm new to this website and I'd really like to know!! Thank you, clankgirl
resolved Living Macguffin or...?
I'm a little confused about this trope and how given that it's supposed to be a macguffin made into a person (which to my understanding seems like a person whose only purpose is to move the plot ...and not much of anything else), which means that there should be a difference between this trope and say... Apocalypse Maiden, The Chosen One, or Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can
I understand how overlap is possible but when does a character go from being a mere Living MacGuffin to any of these other tropes about a character relevant to the plot in one way or another? Or are ALL of those characters inherent macguffins? I mean since the trope itself is divided into more categories -some of which feel either really narrow or way too broad - and the main page description mentions the chosen one trope and at no point makes the distinction about the whole thing.
EDIT:
@Xtifr: Thank you for the answer, but now I see that I need to clarify a little more:
I know that in the most basic level Living MacGuffin has little if any to do with the tropes I listed before, my confusion comes from the fact that in the Macguffin page we have this laconic description:
An object that, while not relevant to the main narrative, is frequently pursued throughout it.
Whereas the Living MacGuffin has this one:
A plot object that is a person.
So, follwing these thread, my question basically boils down to this: In a narrative context, when or how does a character stop being a Living MacGuffin? For example you said that this person's value is determined more by other characters and how much they pursue it rather than for the overall plot right? So this character could be a princess or a diplomat who at the end of the day doesn't not accomplish much but their purpose to the story is met for the simple fact that they are wanted people in the setting right? But a character with an established personality who happens to grab the Distress Ball is not right? Or a character who is The Heart of the team and is pursued for their importance to the main characters, or ( sorry I swear this is the last example) an established character (with personality, motives and connections to other characters) who is pursued by some unknown attribute that for a while is not specified to the audience so for a while they are indeed a Macguffin of sorts, their pursue fuels the plot at least half of the time, and at some point their importance in indeed a pivotal part of the Bad Guy's evil plot? Are they still a Living MacGuffin?
Hope this is not too convoluted or something.
Edited by RoseBrideopenSelf-Demonstrating Troper page?
Anyone has a clue about what to do with SelfDemonstrating.Doc Scratch?
It vaguely looks like a contributor page, but it's in the SelfDemonstrating/ namespace plus it's almost fully spoilered (and no, I didn't bother read it in full). Note that there exists a Tropers.Doc Scratch page, except it's nearly empty.
So, move the content to the Tropers/ namespace? Or cutlist the whole thing for not following standards?

Greetings. I've been inquiring about making a special page on the League of Legends
page. Specifically, I want to make a page dedicated to the items in the game. The list of tropes for League of Legends is huge, and I've taken it upon myself to try and clean it up, move character tropes to the character pages, etc. I'd like to do the same with the item tropes, but the path isn't clear.
There's a very similar page on the Destiny
page that is essentially what I'd like to do. Destiny has a page dedicated to the weapons, so that weapon tropes won't clog up the main page. It's essentially what I'm trying to do.
Any assistance?
