Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:
- Help identifying a trope. See TropeFinder.
- Help identifying a work. See MediaFinder.

Ask the Tropers:
openSelf-promotion?
I suspect Phill Higgins may be using this Wiki to (rather shamelessly) promote himself. His only activity so far was to create this TLP stub
and an Analysis page for an artist called Saulo Oliveira S.
Said analysis has many, many typos and grammar mistakes, on top of repeatedly describing the singer as "the Prince of Rock", someone "covered in revolutionary ideas for incendiary lyrics", "complex and mesmerizing", and countless other self-indulgent statements.
This can't be kosher, right?
Edit: Found a few more things about this singer:
- He used to have a Wikipedia article, but it was deleted not long ago. It was also written in a needlessly self-absorbed way.
- While I did find one of his songs on YouTube, it only has 4 views... So any claims that it is popular or acclaimed are null.
openTroper causing a bit of trouble
Troper Lea17 is causing a bit of trouble.
- They created the page Ghoul Detective Series, and have put a lot of zero-context examples on it.
- Most of the examples are written in the past tense despite taking place in the story's present, as far as I can tell.
- They created a Ghoul Detective Series funny moments page despite being told, in an earlier ATT, that this isn't allowed, what with them being the story's writer. (I cutlisted it already.)
- There's some bad grammar. This sentence is an example: "It tells a story where Ken Kaneki, a young half-ghoul who was adopted by Morofushi brothers."
- There was this huge section they added about the trope Tarot Motifs, but the actual trope isn't used in the story itself as far as I can determine. Only in the guide to the story. (To be fair, that guide is a published work too, so it's fine if you disagree with me and add it back.)
- The quotes are super long. I deleted a massive one.
- There's a lot of Word Cruft, with phrasings like "[name] is this."
- Examples often use the phrasing "[name] is this too," even though examples shouldn't refer to other examples.
- The indentation is often done poorly.
openAll's Fair at the Fair (1938) Western Animation
I want to create a page on this site for "All's Fair at the Fair" (1998); one of my favorite Max Fleischer cartoons and one that I think deserves a bit more love. Unfortunately, I'm not that great at recognizing most pop culture tropes and I don't have a lot of free time to actually make it myself, so I was hoping that I could get some help from some of you more seasoned Tropers. I'd love to learn about all the tropes that make up this classic short and hear your own take on them.

openDoes TV Tropes have any official social media accounts?
I was curious if TV Tropes has any other presence online like on Twitter or Facebook aside from just the website itself.
open Troper vandalizin’ character page. Videogame
Prest Otron has been tamperin’ Five Nights at Freddy's: First Generation, specifically the quotes. They changed them from in-game quotes to attacks on the FNAF fandom. Here is an example:

Dunno if they have been on other pages.
Edited by DelibirdaopenBBC too soon.
- Base-Breaking Character: Yuehiro, the Transgender male Twi’lek, caused some controversy among the fanbase. In addition to the expected vocal minority of transphobes, there was also debate over whether it was realistic for him to take hormones the same way a transperson would in the real world, since medical technology in the GFFA would presumably be miles advanced of our own, not to mention the differences between human and Twi’lek biology. The author herself
eventually addressed this on her Twitter and Tumblr, stating that it was mostly just Rule of Cool.
The work released October 12, 2021, so it's too soon for BBC which needs 6 months.
It's currently the only trope on the page. Should the page be cut or is there anything else to add to it/replace BBC with?
openIs Ship Sinking a main page or YMMV trope?
I believe I read somewhere that it is a main page trope but I also often find it on the YMMV pages like these from Once Upon A Time:
- Ship Sinking:
- Graham/Emma was sunk with Graham's death.
- "Selfless, Brave, and True" torpedoed Emma/August when the latter is rejuvenated into a little boy. This will never be able without Squick. Fans briefly regained hope when August regained his old body in Season 4, only for Emma to confirm their relationship is Like Brother and Sister.
- Similarly, Baelfire/Wendy is no longer a possibility, as Baelfire grew up and Wendy did not.
- Peter Pan/Henry sunk like a rock after "Think Lovely Thoughts".
- Swanfire as Neal is Killed Off for Real in 'Quiet Minds'. Diehard fans of the ship hoped for some kind of reunion when Emma traveled to the Underworld, only for the writers to reveal that Neal Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence, leaving no doubt as to the chances of it actually happening.
- Rumbelle seems to have been sunk in the Season 4 winter finale, as Belle laments how she'll never be first in his heart, says she can't see any good in him anymore, and then banishes him from Storybrooke. However, it's on its way to righting itself again in Season 5.
- Swan Queen has been sunk by the show's creators, who stated at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 that it was never going to happen. In-Universe, it's sunk by Emma and Regina both hooking up with someone else without expressing any romantic inclination in each other, and even encouraging the other to go for their respective Love Interest.
So, should these be moved to the main page?
I am sorry if this is not the place to ask this but I did not know where else to go.
Edited by Bullmanopen[Resolved] Narm Flamebait?
Narm's subpages have the Flame Bait header on them even though Narm itself does not and they aren't listed anywhere else, and I've been wondering how does that work.
Edited by AmonimusopenHow do I propose a new web series creator to be written here? Web Original
I would like to propose the addition of a new web series and its creator to this wiki, but I am not sure how. The creator is called Super Mario Richie and I feel that he desperately needs to be recorded here. I think his omission is unacceptable and I would like to see an effort made for his various works to have their tropes recorded here. I might try to start the page by myself, but I don’t have much free time these days. I hope you can help. Thank you.
openCharacter Page Reversion Policy
EDIT: The original issue is being resolved on the Discussion page, but I'm still wondering about character page projects.
A few days ago, someone created this character subpage
. There wasn't any discussion about this, which is technically fine, but the page itself has some issues. Even though a couple of other users have edited it, seven of the folders have 0-2 examples. There's also some weird capitalization and formatting. Some of their edits also don't make much sense: they changed
a Foil example to Contrasting Sequel Main Character, but neither of the characters in the original example are the protagonist of their series. The bulk of the page is focused on one character (who nearly has technically enough content for their own page).
I posted yesterday on the discussion page, but no one has responded. Is it alright to revert the split, or should I wait for approval? On a separate note, is there an existing project focused on setting up a Character Sheet guidelines page? I feel like that could be helpful.
Edited by indigoJayopenCreator page redirecting to a UsefulNote
When editing the page for Series.Space 1999, I found that not only does its producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson not have creator pages, but Creator.Gerry Anderson is a redirect to the Useful Notes page UsefulNotes.Supermarionation, which is about an animation technique frequently used by the Andersons.
Is it really kosher to have a creator page redirecting to a useful note which is not even supposed to be about the creator in question? I think it would actually be better to remove the redirect and have Creator.Gerry Anderson create a redlink, until a proper creator page can be created (I might get around to that myself when I get the time).
Edited by GnomeTitanopenSandbox query
How can I make a Sandbox entry for myself or for anything that I can share that might be useful? Or do I need a Troper page too?
Edited by Tr0p6564rch6ropenOn Images for Newly-Launched Tropes
Launched my new trope earlier today, and I saw someone else added a pic to it. I know I forfeit any conceit of ownership when I launched it, but I feel the pic isn't clear enough (figuratively because I tend to think of the castle before Mickey Mouse for Disney, and literally because it's kinda fuzzy) and could also be misconstrued as Company Cross-References instead.
Is this the sort of thing I can just change myself, or can I ask in here since it's a recent launch? Or is this the type of thing that should be taken to the Image Suggestion Thread
or a new thread entirely?
openQuotations edging into plagiarism? Anime
While browsing through fanfic pages, Fanfic.Isnt It Beautiful and Fanfic. We Werent Born To Follow struck me with some weird choices. Several examples on them appear to have flat out chunks of the fic itself inserted as context. Not quotes from the characters, but narration. For one example, but there's more.
- The boy is a whirlwind, swinging his tonfa with ease and comfort and using them in probably unconventional ways. He hits with them, sure, and blocks, and parries. And then reverses his grip, uses the short handle to hook under the armpit or around a knee to trip them over. And then turns them around again to use as stilts for his hands, adding inches to the reach of his upwards kick that sends a far-taller opponent reeling back.
This feels in violation of ZCE rules, but I'm not sure if the attempt at indicating quotation saves it from being a plagiarism problem.
Edited by Adannorresolved Creators removing Audience Reaction tropes
This concerns the YMMV page for Rae Kohai (though honestly, every subpage there has their own issues even before getting to how the work itself has been impossible to trope thanks to every episode being privated back in 2019, combined with drama surrounding the work's creator that I'm not going to touch on here). There's one specific issue I'm unsure about that I'd like a second opinion on.
I've been reading up on various administrivia pages on when creators add and edit pages for their own works, and I can't find anything that specifically covers when creators remove YMMV tropes rather than add them. The particular trope that concerns me is a First Installment Wins example that an account with a very similar name to the work's creator (which is currently inactive but mostly seemed to only edit their own work page) deleted without giving an edit reason.
Is it kosher for creators to remove audience reaction tropes even when Zero Context Examples and factual inaccuracies aren't factors?
Edited by Akriloth2160openDEKU SDCP Film
Yo, I saw in a cleanup thread that Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia had a SDCP then got cut. I was wondering if someone could bring that back or at the very least allow a sandbox page for me or someone else to draft one. I feel like with Deku's dorky, self-deprecating, nervously neurotic behavior would make for some great humor. I would say he has some of the most unique traits out of the My Hero cast and maybe even make pages for a perv like Mineta or a hothead like Bakugo at the very least. MHA deserves more SDCP's than just Tsuyu who's own page practically has like 5 things and that's it.
resolved Kill Count and Dead Meat are separate pages Web Original
As the title says, I've noticed that The Kill Count and Dead Meat (the latter of which refers to the channel that the former series is hosted on) are separate pages, but most of the Dead Meat page and its subpages focusses on Kill Count, with hardly anything talking about the rest of the channel's content. What should we do about this (besides possibly renaming the page for Kill Count to remove the "The" if we're keeping the page, since that's not in the title of the show itself outside of James' signing on/off phrases)?
Edited by Akriloth2160

There’s a video on Condemned by History that I uploaded a while back when it used to be called Deader Than Disco. It doesn’t match the trope anymore so I’m hoping I can remove it myself?
