openHow to word this Live Action TV
Having just seen the show, I've started editing the page of Ripley (staring Andrew Scott as the titular Tom Ripley).
In it, there is an Actor Allusion as John Malkovich plays a character (and in the trailer even says he like Ripley's name, though the context is different in the show itself), having played the role of Tom Ripley in Ripley's Game (2002). This has already been added.
However, on top of this, it's revealed he plays the character of Reeves Minot, a character with a major role in the plot of Ripley's Game. Would this be playing the actor allusion trope straight further, exaggerating it, or something else?
openLiving Relic disappeared
Does the Living Relic page... exist for anyone else? I just made an edit to it, and as far as I can tell, the page just isn't there anymore. The history is still there, and I can see the changes I made there, but the page itself is empty. The problem seems to have started while I was editing the page; the preview function just showed a blank page.

open New/Different Category for manhua Webtoons?
I noticed how Sweet Home (the Korean Webtoon) is listed under "Webcomics" and I'm wondering if this is really the best designation for this or if there should be a subcategory for East Asian work. Technically it's a webcomic, but the "comic" section proper seems to lean more towards Western work and Webcomics seems to oftem fo the same. However, Manga and Anime have their own sections and subsections but Chinese and particularly Korean work (manhua) is really gaining momentum and it might make more sense to give those their own page? Or count manga/manhua posted on apps like Webtoons which are often professionally done, under the manga tab itself, etc.
I mostly say this because not just the manga/anime but J Horror Tropes has a page but there's in fact a huge amount of overlap with horror films from other Asian countries like South Korea and Thailand. Maybe there is a way to put these things together?
I'm sorry if this is rambling. I enjoy troping around if you will and while there's often great lists of subgenres for manga or light novels, I don't see many for the Korean/Thai/Chinese equivalents.
openIn-universe YMMV moves?
YMMV.Overanalyzing Avatar is the review shows reaction to the work so objective rather than audiences to the review show, which should be moved to the main page, correct?
Question about these entries:
- Character Derailment: Often Discussed Is Flame Bait so question if viable to move. Note these don't meet this wikis standards for CD.
- He accuses "The Deserter '' of doing this to Zhao, whose introduction he praised for establishing him as a genuinely cunning and imposing villain. Here, he gets goaded into burning his own boats by a twelve year old hurling insults at him.
- He is similarly critical of Azula's Villainous Breakdown in the finale, critising the sheer speed at which it happens.
- Sacred Cow: Played With in regards to Azula, as while OA doesn't consider her (or any character really) to be above criticism, he found out the hard way when criticizing Azula's childhood behavior, take over of Ba Sing Se, and later expedited mental breakdown that her fans are very protective of her, to the point that in his "Overanalyzing Overanalyzing Avatar" video he adamantly refused to discuss Azula's characterization as clips from those scenes are played. This might be worth keeping as a YMMV to the review. But YMMV cannot be played with and this seem's more Avatar's SC status.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: In "Return To Omashu", he criticizes Bumi for surrendering without giving his people a chance to fight or even consulting them about it. Saying he understands what Bumi was trying to do, but still thinks it was a dick move of him to hand over the city and at least seemingly screwing over his people. Fails to explain why they were supposed to be sympathetic (Bumi was called out in-work), so would normally remove but if this is in-universe is it valid?
resolved Are Page Images allowed to have triggering content?
This question feels kind of silly to ask considering how subjective triggers are, but I want to put it forth anyway.
It no longer seems to be up, but I remember at one point, Tearjerker.Thirteen Reasons Why had its page image hidden behind a content warning. The image itself was not graphic, but what it implied could be triggering and so that’s why the folder was there.
I’m wondering if something similar can be done for other pages. The reason I ask is I was browsing the pages for Film.Event Horizon, and the Nighmare Fuel page’s image contains major Eye Scream. Now, I know I am ultimately responsible for what content I consume on this wiki, and I can handle being jumpscared by Nightmare Fuel pages. Heck, I can even handle reading about the things that happen in Event Horizon. But reading about it and seeing it are two very different things, at least for me, and I would’ve appreciated a warning.
I can’t be the first person who has had an experience like this, and here is what I propose: a list of common triggers that images with those triggers should warn about first. Again, I know triggers are a very subjective thing, and it would take a lot of work. But it feels worth it to me.
Thank you for coming to my borderline vent session.
openThis entry feels wrong
- Arthur: In S9's "Arthur Makes Waves", Arthur and D.W. go to the MacDonald house during a heat wave to cool off in the pool in their yard, where D.W.'s classmate and Implied Love Interest James shows up shirtlessnote He's shirtless because he had been swimming in the pool himself, nervously asking D.W. if she needs him to kiss her again, to which D.W. responds "Uh-uh" (meaning "No") after a brief pause. The scene is reminiscent of two lovers being nervous about sexual intercourse.
The scene never came off to me like that, and it would be incredibly wrong considering both characters are of kindergarten age. As for the "you don't need me to kiss you again" line, Arthur has a lot of Continuity Nods and it's likely that James just didn't want to get in another awkward situation with D.W., since that only happened last season. was an editor only for a day and worked on one page, creating Literature.Noblesse Oblige in 2018.
The other editor to the page, who started editing that same day is inaceso
, who also much more recently started editing again in January to make WebOriginal.Fatherless Behaviour.
Even if they are the same user, that's not a problem in of itself. But I can't find any indication that either of these works actually exist (in addition to the latter page being a complete stub). There's a post on its discussion page
.
I've P Med the second account about the stub-ness but I'm not sure what to do about the fact I can't find any trace of either work they made pages for.
resolved Ban evader
Hello. Recently I have made a discussion on The Jungle Book page (and left an edit reason mentioning it without making any edits).
Currently only one user named Donner has responded to my discussion so far. While there was nothing suspicious about his response, I noticed Donner’s account was just created in March 2024.
While there is nothing wrong with a new user discussing things, and they haven’t actually done anything, I have made some recent discoveries about a recently deleted user named Thorion.
In the past I made an Ask The Tropers post trying to find out if Thorion and dkadugo were the same person, and geolocation proved it false.
However while they are not the same person, I have reason to believe that Thorion DID have another account on here under the username Jet 556. If that name sounds familiar, Jet 556 was a user who was suspended back in 2015(and I don’t think they were ever released from suspension, as their last edits were on July 30, 2015, though I could be wrong).
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=jet556&page=1
While Thorion’s account age was listed simply as “4 score and 7 years ago”, according to their edit history, their first edits were on July 31, 2015, while Jet 556 was suspended. And his first edits were on the same page that Jet 556 made his last edits on.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=Thorion&page=67
It actually goes beyond similar edits and interests though.
Thorion had made several TV Tropes pages, as well as a fanfic rec, of fanfics written by a writer named, you guessed it, Jet 556!
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Fanfic.TheEvabonSaga&page=1
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Fanfic.EnterKenFinlayson&page=1
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanficRecs/Detentionaire
Thorion was openly promoting the work of someone with the same username as a suspended user here!
It seems like there was at least some sort of connection between Thorion and Jet 556.
Again, there is a chance I could be wrong(as I have been in the past). Maybe they were relatives or close friends. Maybe Thorion was just a big Jet 556 fan. Thorion would act like Jet was a different person whole talking about him and reviewing Jet’s work(though considering that Jet 556 was suspended, it’s obvious why Thorion would try to pass himself off as a different person). Maybe they are the same, but Thorion simply requested a new account and the moderators allowed it(though considering Jet 556 was suspended, I doubt it). But I would be very surprised if they weren’t the same. If this was already brought up and debunked, I apologize. I haven’t seen any evidence that this has been cleared up, though.
Anyway, Thorion deleted his account, and last I checked jet556 was suspended back in 2015(and possibly banned), so nothing can be done about those accounts.
I am only bringing this up because in his last PM to me before deleting his account Thorion said he would “accept whatever punishment he received”, but he deleted his account(and I don’t know if he did it while under suspension, which would be a bounce, or if he did it before), and now this new Donner account, just created in March 2024 after Thorion deleted his account, is the only person to respond in my discussion so far. And if my suspicions are true, then Thorion has likely ban evaded in the past, meaning there is a chance for him to do it again.
If geolocation confirms Donner is a different person, then that’s fine. I’ve been wrong before. Again, nothing really suspicious other than the account’s age. They’ve only made a few edits so far so it’s difficult to tell at this point(they edited on some of the same pages Thorion did, but Thorion’s edited on a LOT of pages and Donner has also edited pages Thorion hasn’t, so there’s no real evidence). I just want to know because a discussion can’t really be had against a possible ban evader for numerous reasons.
Again, sorry to bother you about this.
Update: Posted more evidence of Donner likely being jet556/Thorion in the replies.
Edited by ClownishchimpopenAutoEroticTroping
Hi, I recently made a previous thread on Thorion(aka jet556, aka Donner)
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?parent_id=132277&type=att
However this thread concerns some contributions Thorion made prior to deleting that account.
As mentioned in the previous thread, Thorion promoted jet556’s work by creating pages about them:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/TheEvabonSaga
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/EnterKenFinlayson
They also made a fanfic recommendation:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanficRecs/Detentionaire
However there is also this page:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/LetsPlay/BryanCroiDragon
Like the first two pages, Thorion created this page(and the pages attached to it) and was the main contributor, with contributions by other users primarily being to make corrections/fix errors.
What makes this page also Auto Erotic Troping is that the page mentions that Bryan Croi Dragon’s birthday is September 17, 1992. That is the same birthday as jet556 according to the latter’s profile that The Evabon Saga page has a link to. So Bryan Croi Dragon seems to be the person behind the jet556, Thorion, and Donner accounts, making this is another case of self-promotion.
There’s also the fact that these pages were created by an ban evading account(Thorion) and he’s been caught ban evading again as Donner.
Edited by ClownishchimpopenPokemon ending complaining/misuse?
YMMV.Pokemon To Be A Pokemon Master has these complaints, most if which I removed from other pages per cleanup
.
- Audience-Alienating Ending: When it was announced that this would be the final chapter in Ash's story, with an eleven-part miniseries titled To be a Pokémon Master wrapping things up before Liko and Roy took over, fans were eager to see how Ash would conclude his journey now that he was the World Coronation Series Champion. What came next was a massive disappointment to many on both sides of the Pacific; rather than wrap up any of Ash's story arcs, the series ends with him deciding to go Walking the Earth and befriend every Pokémon he can, while the Team Rocket Trio gets back together and decides to endlessly pursue him even if they don't succeed. Besides the fact that Ash's reunion with Brock and Misty, as well as all of his old Pokémon he was finally rotating into his roster, were just Filler episodes designed to homage the original series with little consequence or Character Development, none of the other dangling plot threads (such as Ash's released Pokémon, any potential of him taking up a romantic relationship with Misty or Serena, or his companions own personal goals) were followed though. Worst yet, this blatant Status Quo Is God not only failed to make Ash a Pokémon Master, but undid Team Rocket's Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure within two episodes, and barely acknowledged Ash being the World Monarch, let alone how he would defend his title. Needless to say, those were expecting a grand farewell to the iconic protagonist were let down. It wasn't severe or widespread enough to count, or at least as severe as this argues. chris4449 who first added it
added it to AudienceAlienatingEnding.Anime And Manga a few weeks after I removed it from the Journeys YMMV page, which other tropers copied back to the page them moved to it's current one. Is this edit warring to re-remove?
- Esoteric Happy Ending: Team Rocket's final resolution is treated as a happy ending despite the fact it's a cementation of their vicious cycle: Even though their latest failed attempt nearly disbanded the trio permanently, they reconcile and conclude that pursuing Pikachu, the Signature Mon of the World Coronation Series Monarch, is worth spending the rest of their lives for despite 25 years of being offered better life opportunities outside of that impossible goal (and outside of evil in general). While Ash leaves the series as the World Champion seeking out new adventures to better than before, the Team Rocket trio leave unchanged as people and reduced to mere annoyances that barely get Ash's attention anymore. Villains getting an unhappy fate for their unrepentant villainy doesn't sound unintentionally unhappy. This is those who liked them unhappy with their fate which is something else.
- Fan-Disliked Explanation: The final episode establishes that Ash still isn't a Pokémon Master and Ash won't consider himself one until he's befriended every Pokémon he can. Many fans took issue with this feeling it was ludicrous that the anime wouldn't grant Ash the status of Pokémon Master despite this being his last time as the main character and getting crowned as the strongest trainer on the planet. Other fans took issue with how vague Ash's definition of a Pokémon Master was. These fans note Ash's word choice could mean noting anything from catching one Pokémon of every species (making it identical to Goh), or befriending every single individual Pokémon in the world (which is a physical impossibility given the large quantity and some Pokémon like the Malamar trio being unrelentingly evil). This shows there never was an official definition, and Ash decided on a new definition. Besides seeming misuse as it's not the Explanation (how/why) part that's disliked, this seems part of the general complaining so I'm bringing/asking here.
Thoughts, permission to re-remove the first two?
resolved User deleting anything related to the so-called "Soulsborne" continuity
Reginald Ogron 5 for the last couple months, against many other people has been deleting anything that regards FromSoftware as having a series in a loose continuity. Whether that be for Mythology Gag, or Spiritual Successor, or just a reference to a level in another Souls game.
This was their latest justification for a Fan Nickname entry: "Due to this game's legacy, many terms and mechanics that were translated over but retained the same identity are often referred to with their previous names. Therefore, Runes are still frequently called Souls, Sites of Grace are still bonfires, Incantations are Miracles, etc."
"Dark Souls is not Elden Ring's predecessor. I have never seen any of these terms used intentionally as a Fan Nickname, they are almost exclusively used by people who don't care about the lore enough to use the correct terms, I.E. they're just getting it wrong unintentionally."
Despite the fact the director has declared them to be in a sort of series.
He references Elden Ring in this context of "loose" continuity.
When he tried to remove the many concepts from old games that didn't make it in, but were used in Elden Ring on the trivia page, someone wrote this.
"Tropes Are Flexible and the page explanation itself explicitly says it allows for instances of recycled assets and concepts in dlc and the like. Elden Ring was advertised as a Spiritual Successor / "greatest hits" amalgamation of all the prior Soulsborne games, made by the same devs, and uses code and models that are directly lifted from the cut content of those prior entries, it absolutely falls under this umbrella."
I believe he's gone way too far, but before I revert his edits, I want to ask everyone's opinion on this question of Mythology Gag, and see whether it's actually against the site's rules?
Edited by smogmonsteropenCut Pages (further clean-up) Western Animation
One final query about my two Disney fanfics (and the tropes pages for them which I acknowledge were purely self-promotional). Will the cut tropes pages become invisible on the search are at some point if someone were to type "Cinderella: The TRUE Sequel" or "Once Upon a Studio: Version 2.0"? I'd just like to ask just to make absolutely sure that nobody can gain access to the cut pages, because I'm well aware this time that TV Tropes advises against self-promotion.
don't worry though if you don't think there is a way to stop any cut pages from appearing in search areas
openActor Allusion in Creator Page
I was wondering whether, if an actor has played a role that in some way or other references a previous role (Actor Allusion), that can be added to the Creator Page?
The example is John Malkovich who has a role in the upcoming adaptation (Ripley) of The Talented Mr. Ripley. He previously played the title role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation of the sequel of the The Talented Mr. Ripley: Ripley's Game. This is alluded to in the show where he tells Tom Ripley (now played by Andrew Scott) he likes the name.
This actor allusion has already been put on the work page of Ripley, but I was wondering whether it could also be mentioned of the page of Malkovich himself?
Edited by king15openMissing piece for resurrected trope
Years ago, a TLP draft of mine, Workers Wear Overalls
, was created, only to peter out a couple months later. Now, I've found that Rough Overalls
, basically the same thing, not only launched successfully a couple weeks ago, it has all but one of my examples (with the missing one instead going to the equally-new Kiddy Coveralls). After a tense argument between my conscious and my emotions, I decided to let this apparent theft slide, but I do wish they'd copied my description too, as the second paragraph in Workers Wear Overalls details all the reasons why someone would wear overalls with no undershirt, while Rough Overalls distills it down to the fanservice element. I'd like to know if there's any way to bring over the missing, non-fanservice elements in a manner that fits the new format. I typed up that whole thing myself, and I'd hate to see it go to waste.
- Yes, there's probably a forum thread for this, but I've had bad luck with the forums as of late; too many posts at one time means the earlier ones get ignored.

I'm on a self-imposed hiatus due to reasons, but this should be brought to the mods' attention.

expressing overwhelmingly negative views towards the work and saying they will remove all mentions of it from the wiki.

openAdding Broken Base to YMMV Sonic Prime Page? Western Animation
So, since Sonic Prime had just wrapped up, is it time to make a Broken Base section for the YMMV page? Some of the suggestions for the Broken Base section are:
1) The characterization of Sonic himself has caused a split in the fanbase. Some fans find Sonic being characterized as being too immature found it to be completely alienated from his more laid back yet sensible portrayal in the games. Other fans however, think that having Sonic have more flaws in this version makes him more interesting as a character.
2) The canon of this series has also been divided in the fandom as some fans questioned about when this series exactly took place in the game canon and why does Sonic act way more differently in this series in comparison to how he was portrayed in Sonic Frontiers?
Edited by RabbitearsblogopenRepeat AutoEroticTroping offense Webcomic
I ended up coming across the page TearJerker.Sonic Into Across And Beyond, as the main page has come up in the related query for another work I follow.
This would not be a problem if not for the following two reasons:
- The sole contributor to the article is Motorbike User 43, who is also the author of this fic.
- This person has already been suspended before
for Auto-Erotic Troping.
Though I hate to throw another user under the bus (they've consistently reacted very poorly to being called out for policy violations, self-flagellating rather than trying to improve), I draw the line at behavior indistinguishable from ignorance.
