openWas it necessary to spoiler tag the whole example?
I found 2 ymmv page examples that I find it bothersome because they spoiler tag the whole sentence that include non spoiler words and real life stuff. Here are the examples. From The Predator
- Narm: Autism, particularly the unrealistic Idiot Savant archetype, being considered "evolution's next step". It only avoids being offensive by being laughable, given how inaccurate by evolutionary science standards it is.
- Jerkass Woobie: Max retroactively becomes one following "Parents Day". It was hinted before that his parents were neglectful, but this episode confirms it. He spends most of the day being a brat and acting out of jealousy upon seeing all the other kids hanging out with their parents. Then, not only do his parents never show up, it's revealed they didn't even sign him up for a specific activity. They just didn't want him around. The reminder of this is enough to bring Max to tears.
openEdit war
DogOnRollerSkates
is edit-warring over a Narm entry on this
page. They added
the entry, Dylandbk
deleted
it saying the scene is intentionally funny and thus doesn't count as Narm, and Dog re-added
it saying it does.
This is the second time
Dog has been involved in an edit war, and they were suspended for it before.
openOf Narm and subpages
So I've discovered a fairly cut-and-dry example of Narm in a Tabletop Game that doesn't currently have a page on the wiki—specifically, an incident where a monster in a game was renamed by the designers because fans pointed out that the original name was unintentionally goofy. However, unlike a lot of other "broad-spectrum" YMMV tropes (like Ho Yay or Friendly Fandoms), Narm doesn't have either a Tabletop Games section or an "Other" section to collect a lot of the examples from smaller media.
The question is, what should I do if I want to add the example?
- Create an "Other examples" section on the main page that isn't in a subpage, and make a Tabletop Games folder there
- Create an "Other" subpage, and create a "Tabletop Games" folder there
- Create a "Tabletop Games" subpage and just use that
(Observation: Although Narm doesn't have a Tabletop Games section, Narm Charm does...)
openRe: Horrible/FanFilm
Same basic question as my earlier one about News. How is Fan Film different from Fan Fic (or Web Original (which is currently open BTW), for that matter)? Stealth examples of both could be lurking there.
Edited by Theatre_Maven_3695openThe page for the funny moments in the Funny/TheRoom should be changed to Narm Film
The Room is trying to be a drama so most of the humor is unintentional. I think changing it to Narm: The Room might be more better.
openEdit War over a Narm entry over YMMV.UraraMeirocho Anime
Little Buster added back an entry for Narm at YMMV.Urara Meirocho that he added in the first place with no reason after being removed by someguysomeguy.
openNarm Videogame
The Narm page claims it's allowed on YMMV pages but when I check out the Metal Gear page it claims it's Flame Bait and should be kept off the work pages. Why is this?
openEdit War Film
Looks like the beginnings of an edit war are going on
Man of Steel. Absolute Sword
added an example under Narm, Master Hero
deleted the example, Absolute Sword has re-added it.
openCan I move all the Trope/VideoGame pages to Trope/VideoGames?
Can I move all the Trope.Video Game pages to Trope.Video Games?
'Cause the it seems Trope.Video Games is the canonical subpage style?
The ones that hold trope examples instead of redirects are: First-Name Basis, Most Wonderful Sound, and The Unfought.
... Is VideoGame.Video Game or Main.Video Game needed, when the other exists?
Also, can I cut Memes.Video Game, since it redirects to Memes.Video Games? Or is its 233 inbounds too many, to not keep, compared to the latter's 15,939?
Same request for Narm, but 223 to 5,963 inbounds.
Edited by MaladyopenValid or no? ''Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom'' Spoilers. Film
I added to the YMMV page for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom regarding Narm, only for troper TantaMonty
to remove them.
- The scene where Mills tells the heroes that Maisie is actually a clone comes right out of no where, with Mills having little reason to tell them. The sheer jarring way it is revealed is much funnier than it should be, since it was clearly meant to be a Shocking Swerve, but didn't quite land the mark.
- The film graces us with perhaps the silliest death in the entire series: Mills killing Lockwood by suffocating him with a pillow. The hilarity of such a thing in a movie filled with killer Dinosaurs is much funnier than the film probably realized.
Their reason as: The mere fact Lockwood was killed by something that was not a dinosaur is not funny at all, as he was just a feeble old man murdered by one of the most despicable characters in the movie. Also, Eli did have a reason to reveal Maisie's origins, in his own twisted mind he thought that Owen and Claire would stop caring for the young girl if they find out she was the result of unethical genetic practices..
Are these valid examples? The first one is valid if you ask me since how the scene is framed just has the reveal happen as if telling the audience, and the reason they removed it is just using headcanon for why since there isn't a reason for it. Plus, unless the trope is a misuse, opinions are still valid as far as I am aware.
Plus it seems like the troper might be semi policing the movies pages, which can be a problem going forward. Also I should add I don't mind if these are seen as bad examples, just wanted to make sure.
Edited by keyblade333openInconsistent standards for the That One tropes? Videogame
It took me a while to notice, but there appears to be some inconsistency with what applies for any of the That One tropes for certain games. For example, back when Fire Emblem Warriors came out, Gunarm Dyne stated that nothing besides the story mode could be any of the That One tropes. This was despite the fact that the bulk of the games content is in the History Mode, which while "extra content", is still a part of the game and was clearly designed to be where most of the game is played. Meanwhile, the Hyrule Warriors pages have several That One Level entrees for its equivalent of the History mode, and its DLC or Legends port.
If we look outside of this as well, games such as the Dark Souls series have many of the extra/dlc locations/bosses as That One examples. While yes the Souls games are not the same gameplay genre as a Warriors game, they still should be held to the same standards since Brutal Bonus Level would imply that the level is extra, outside of the games main content, which if anything, the History mode for FE Warriors is where most of the games content is.
I've also not, as far as I know, seen Brutal Bonus Level being used on any of the mentioned pages. I'd like if some agreement could be made since it seems silly that FE Warriors is the only page I've seen so far that this was made a big deal about, though I could be wrong.
Edited by keyblade333openNarm subpages has Flame Bait headers
I may be late in things, but I just noticed that subpages of Narm now has the header seen in Flame Bait page. Has it become categorized as Flame Bait and shouldn't be added in other YMMV pages?
openProblematic editor.
Sabbat
has... an issue. He doesn't edit much, but when he does... yeah.
- He deleted an example
of Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped because he thought it was racist... and goes on to elaborate on the discussion page
that saying "white male privilege" is racist, while seemingly unironically claiming that not supporting misogyny and racism is the real racist behavior. Incidentally, the entry was bad, but he's clearly Right for the Wrong Reasons here.
- Also, regarding the same character, he blatantly and explicitly defends his misogynistic behavior in the show's thread
.
- Also, regarding the same character, he blatantly and explicitly defends his misogynistic behavior in the show's thread
- From the same page, misusing narm to stan for an In-Universe low-key racist.
- Adding natter
that downplays homophobia.
- I can't glean the agenda behind this edit because it's so devoid of context
, but it comes across as complaining about a non-straight character.
- Deleting an indirect reference to the Black Lives Matter movement
... and in the process ruining an example of Harsher in Hindsight because it's no longer hindsight.
- Deleting an example for being needlessly inflammatory
... that just happens to point out that violence against black people gets covered up.
He was suspended once
for edit warring over something that "just happened" to "sound" racist.
Almost none of his (post-first ban) actions are bad enough on their own to really warrant me to do anything, but taken as a whole they're worrisome. I don't know (or even necessarily think) that this is actionable on your part (he is, after all, at least participating in the Discussion for better or for worse) but I wanted to flag it for mods.
... also he tends to make entries just bad (Breaking Example Indentation, lacking context, misusing tropes) for the sake of his "agenda")
Edited by LarkmarnopenAre these bad examples/pages?
So, was doing a bit of editing on Danganronpa: The Wolf's Game because no index, a couple zces, it needs a custom name to include an apostrophe, the usual 'this page is a mess.'
I came across these two pages which I feel like should be cut/cleaned because they have examples that are poor although I don't know if they qualify for cut listing or if I'm too strict.
Awesome.Danganronpa The Wolfs Game has one example. The image is a spoiler image which I don't remember if it's allowed or not. The sole example is worded... badly. I don't know exactly how to describe it but I know it's not worded well.
YMMV.Danganronpa The Wolfs Game has three examples:
Complete Monster, which while I'd say it's right I thought you had to get that approved by a forum thread.
Fan Disservice is... ig was right at the time but it's inaccurate now since the corpse it's referring to was faking her own death although that could be fixed.
Narm Charm which I just flat out think is wrong; I don't think I've heard anyone in this fandom hold this opinion. But i also know it's not my place personally to say 'that's objectively wrong' on a ymmv page.

So, on the Awesome.Avatar page, Wanderhome listed as CMOA's Quaritch punching out Sully, and Quaritch burning down hometree. I removed both on the grounds that punching out an unarmed, near-malnourished paraplegic isn't awesome, and neither is, you know, slaughtering hundreds of innocent people. Wanderhome responded that, "Beating a traitor and burning out vicious, animalistic alien savages is always awesome."
Checking some of his other edits, it's clear he just has a hate-on for the movie, and is probably just trolling. Edit: Oh, and you can add straight-up "xenophobic prick" to his descriptions. He's doing nothing but deliberately mischaracterizing the movie to put his bullshit across.

I just noticed this when I was explaining the site to a friend, but when did Narm get shifted to the Darth Wiki, and why? I could understand the subjective label, but Darth? I ended up linking her to a different page that explains the concept less well, just so she would give this site a fair chance.

Why is Harsher in Hindsight on Darth Wiki all of a sudden? It's not like it was used as complaining like Narm was.

Having a small amount of trouble with soulreaver over the Narm entry on Transformers: Prime. S/he deleted it with no edit reason, I added it back with a note in my edit reason saying that a lot of people think it does count. S/he deleted it again. Hasn't responded to my PM either.

Where do I ask to get a recently-cut-but-should-have-been-locked-before-the-cut-so-it-could-be-added-to-the-PermanentRedLinkClub-but-I-didn't-speak-up-fast-enough-so-it-just-got-cut-with-the-temporary-autolock page unlocked and locked again so it could be Cut Listed and die in peace? The pages in question are WH40K and Narm.Real Life for the reasons I gave in those threads.
Edited by FinalStarman

So the Narm cleanup thread
has been around for a while, but I'm wondering if it's perhaps recently been taking things a little far. As far as I was hitherto aware, we usually take a fairly light touch on YMMV tropes, precisely because they're subjective, and only delete entries in cases of clear-cut trope misuse. The Narm thread seems to be applying a somewhat more aggressive approach, getting more into the weeds of whether an example is funny enough to qualify (which strikes me as more of a subjective matter than, say, whether it's mislabelled intentional comedy) and applying a particularly strict interpretation of our 'examples are not general' rule that I haven't seen applied to other audience reaction tropes, ruling out any repeated/recurring elements of unintentional comedy in an otherwise dramatic work.
Did I miss a shift in wiki policy towards this style of YMMV cleanup, or is this approach indeed going a bit far in cutting valid/informative entries?
