open Marking a folder "Spoiler character". Is this even allowed or encouraged? Videogame
Is this even allowed or encouraged in the Wiki? I came across one today, gave it a real name and the OG author rolled it back for some reason.
And the page was Live A Live - Middle Ages and Spoiler Characters.
openVideoGame/{{Diablo}} MagnificentBastard entry Videogame
Baal from the franchise was approved by the thread
. I thought I had forgotten to add him to the YMMV page so I just put him up but later noticed he was deleted here
with the edit reason citing some of the tropes should be going on individual game pages. Noticing my mistake, I've commented out the example but I don't see him being put on any particular game page. To avoid an edit war, does anyone mind pointing me to the proper YMMV page he should be on as I don't know the games myself?
Edit: Changed from a comment out to a deletion of my own addition until this gets resolved just to be on the safe side.
Edited by 43110openSmite character page note issue Videogame
On the Smite Greek Pantheon page, under Medusa's folder, is this entry (put here exactly how it appears on the page):
- Lighter and Softer: Her lore mentions Poseidon propositioning her, despite her being a priestess of Athena. Those who know about Classical mythology know what that really entails.[[labelnote:Explanation]]According to Ovid, Poseidon raped a virgin priestess of Athena named Medusa within Athena's own temple. Medusa was transformed into a Gorgon by Athena as punishment. Poseidon wasn't punished at all. Presumably a case of Might Makes Right, seeing as Poseidon was second only to Zeus in power (also Athena was something of a Female Misogynist). That and adding "rape" to a game not rated M probably isn't a good idea.
Seems the obvious problem is that there's no second labelnote marker, right? Except, no, when I went to fix it, there was a second marker, yet for some reason the page didn't acknowledge it as being there. I tried looking for accidental indents, tried retyping the markers, and everything else I could think of, but nothing worked. Anybody know exactly what's wrong here?
openTrying to stop Edit War situation Videogame
This has definitely become an Edit War, which I sincerely apologize for, I wasn’t aware they were a thing until a couple of days ago and I really want to avoid this happening again. Basically, I’ve had issues with a user named Nexohook adding edits that violate a lot of the Administrivia rules on how to write examples concisely. Personally, I’ve only encountered them on the NightmareFuel page for SuperDanganronpaAnother2
but having looked into their editing history, I have seen that they have done similar things on other pages too. Some of their issues are:
-Fan Myopia: Adding in multiple references to random TV shows and franchises with no context, despite the page having nothing to do with them.
-Clear, Concise, Witty: Adding jokes to every entry, to the point where it becomes very distracting and takes away from the original example.
-I don’t know if this falls under the Family Friendliness policy or No Lewdness, No Prudishness and I think may not be too big a deal when compared to the others, but there has been an effort to change a word that fits just fine with a more “vulgar” substitute? Like changing the words “genitals” to “balls”. This may not be an issue so please let me know if I’m in the wrong here.
I took the advice under Signal-to-Noise Train Wreck and removed the edits to clear things up several times and given reasons in the history as to why I did so, but after a few weeks, the user will come back and add them back in again. Like I said, I’m not sure what to do about the situation so any advice will help. Once again, I’m so sorry for creating an Edit War situation, and now that I know about Ask The Tropers, I’ll know to come here again next time if something like this happens again.
Edited by Tronomicsresolved Bad Sequelitis Entry on YMMV Total War Warhammer III Videogame
A while back, there was an Edit War ATT concerning the Sequelitis entry on Total War: Warhammer III. See here
. I don't disagree that it was Edit Warring, but what got lost in that discussion is that the offending entry is genuinely bad, violates a number of rules and is very outdated compared to the current state of the game. For context here is the current entry as it stands on that page.
- Sequelitis: It was very clear that the team developing this game and the team maintaining the previous game either disagreed heavily or just weren't coordinating as much of the fixes, patches, updates, and design evolutions that made the previous game so popular were not present at the launch of this one. The game shifted back in favor of things that were either patched out of or specifically avoided in the previous game resulting in a launch that many fans agree was a major step backwards.
- "Poorly Optimized" is an understatement when you see the litany of programming errors that caused a lot of vitriol among the players
. It's widely theorized that the core of the game was forked off an older build of the previous game before the big Potion of Speed update and thus never received most of the multitude of fixes, patches, and updates present in that patch and subsequent ones.
- The skill and tech trees for many factions are poorly-executed, with many technologies or skills that range from underwhelming (+1% chance for a plague to spread for Nurgle) to completely useless (Leadership bonuses for an Unbreakable unit). Several skills and technologies also don't do what the description says they do, making it hard to know what bonus you're actually getting. On top of this, some factions have their unique bonuses and unit abilities gated behind technologies (such as Tzeentch's Teleport stance, Kislev's Ice Court mechanic, and the spellcasting abilities of every Greater Daemon, with each spell having its own technology), something that was specifically hated about the Greenskins in the first game and removed from them with a series of reworks in the second. Patch 1.2 focused heavily on beefing up factions' tech trees, mitigating this.
- While they raised the level cap for Heroes and Lords to level 50 they didn't necessarily give them any more skills, meaning some heroes can get more skill points than they can spend; Iridescent Horrors with the Lore of Tzeentch, for example, can only spend 47 due to having mutually-exclusive skills, and even if they didn't would only have 49. This was previously only a problem with mods and those modders had solved the problem early in the first game's lifecycle.
- Many players and reviewers alike agree the game's UI is both less appealing and harder to read due to the overemphasis on the color red compared to the previous game's more vibrant interface. A common source of frustration is that the colors for many different functions are effectively the same, making it impossible to quickly distinguish if a settlement is, for example, building a structure or demolishing it.
- The campaign that launched with the game, Realm of Chaos, doubled down on the elements players hated about the second game's Vortex campaign (particularly the time pressure and the random invasions) without making many improvements, ignoring well-received diversification of faction objectives and stories from the previous game's DLC packs. See Scrappy Mechanic for more details on why the Reign of Chaos campaign mechanics are especially loathed. The reception of this campaign was so bad Creative Assembly had to delay their first planned update and rush out Patch 1.1 specifically to address it.
- The series has long had a reputation for amazing mods that expand and improve on the game in a myriad of ways. This game did not launch with Steam Workshop support and went without for two months until the 1.1 update.
- "Poorly Optimized" is an understatement when you see the litany of programming errors that caused a lot of vitriol among the players
And here is my critique of this entry and its sub-bullets, breaking it down by the elements.
1. For starters this entry really shouldn't be broken down into multiple sub-bullets. They give the appearance of a Wall of Text. A single bullet that's Clear, Concise, Witty is preferable.
2. ""Poorly Optimized" is an understatement" etc.: The video link can stay but the words inside it should be rewritten and the rest of the paragraph should be cut. One half is hyperbolic Word Cruft with unnecessary italics, the other is pure speculation.
3. "The skill and tech trees for many factions" etc.: The points can stand but the bracketed text should be moved into Notes to make the paragraph more concise. Also, the text may need to be put into past tense as the subbullet itself admits CA have been working on this, though I think it should go as I would rather keep that element for last.
4. "While they raised the level cap for Heroes and Lords" etc.: The point is valid, but IMO we can reduce this to a single sentence or even a fragment of one. e.g. CA raised the level cap for Lords and Heroes to 50, but some characters don't have enough room for that many skill points.
5. "Many players and reviewers alike agree the game's UI" etc.: Can delete. The point is valid but they directly addressed it in a later patch which means it should go under Author's Saving Throw. At most a fragment of a sentence like "issues with the game's interface due to poor colour balance and excessive use of bright red".
6. "The campaign that launched with the game" etc.: Valid but needs compression and to remove the reference to Scrappy Mechanic which is considered bad form. A single sentence should do it.
7. "The series has long had a reputation" etc.: Delete. Yes it was frustrating but it's been addessed.
So with all these in mind, a revised version of the entry as I see it would go something like this:
- Sequelitis: At launch, the game was very divisively and even negatively received for feeling like a step backwards after the much-lauded final state of Total War: Warhammer II. Reasons for this include a large host of glitches, bugs and programming errors
that made it feel unpolished, complaints about poor choices for skillnote Ranging from underwhelming (+1% chance for a plague to spread for Nurgle) to completely useless (Leadership bonuses for an Unbreakable unit). and technology treesnote Some factions had their unique bonuses and unit abilities gated behind technologies, such as Tzeentch's Teleport stance, Kislev's Ice Court mechanic, and the spellcasting abilities of every Greater Daemon, with each spell having its own technology. for certain races, CA raising the level cap for Lords and Heroes to 50 but not accounting for characters who didn't have enough skills to accommodate 49 skill points, issues with the game's interface due to poor colour balance and excessive use of bright red, not launching with built-in support for Game Mods like its predecessors did, which might have mitigated some people's complaints about it, and worst of all, a base game campaign that was almost universally derided for loathsome mechanics, an irritating amount of time pressure and homogenising the storylines and campaign goals of the factions featured, making people who hated the how the Vortex campaign in the second game started out before DLC packs brought diversification of faction objectives and stories cry, "Oh, No... Not Again!" Fortunately, CA have since worked hard to address all these issues throught game patches and their first DLC pack, which has led to the game getting a much more positive reception.
Note this is not the final form I would put it in, I just needed to make something for this, but I also wanted to achieve consensus before I posted it. Thoughts?
Edited by MinisterOfSinisteropenYMMV Standards Videogame
This example from Spider-Man (PS4) has sparked discussion in its forum thread
:
- Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: The gameplay, while still considered quite fun and well done, borrows heavily from other Wide-Open Sandbox games, especially the Batman Arkham series. The story, on the other hand, is widely praised on multiple levels and has many comic book fans calling it one of Spidey's best Ultimate Universe and Sinister Six stories the wall-crawler has ever had. Key points of note are the exceptional performances from the entire cast, the strong writing, the excellent and very in-depth Character Development, and the emotionally arresting and fantastically acted Final Boss fight against Dr. Octopus.
Most people agree that this specific example is invalid as per the trope definition:
However, discussion in the forum thread has turned to YMMV standards in general and whether or not they allow for individual/fringe opinions. I've seen examples removed time and time again on the basis that YMMV only covers audience reactions, but the YMMV home page lists two categories of tropes:
- The article might call for a value judgment and your judgment call could be different from another troper's.
- The article might be about differences of opinion or audience reaction.
The definition makes a clear distinction between individual value judgements and audience reactions and states that both are valid. Is the idea that YMMV is purely about evidence-supported audience reactions a misconception, or is the home page just poorly-written?
Edited by indigoJayopenGenshin Impact Gamebreaker - Freeze Videogame
On August 25th I started a discussion post on cleaning up Genshin Impact's Gamebreaker page in light of a big update that came out that same month. One of my requested changes was to delete Freeze Teams from the reactions list. My reasons were an increased appearance of bosses in the Spiral Abyss (basically Genshin's challenge mode), as all bosses are immune to freeze. While convenient against regular mobs, I felt that the boss-immunity was too big a shortcoming for "gamebreaker."
I should clarify that freeze isn't a status that can be caused on a whim, and needs a dedicated team set-up to pull off. And that teams can only be changed every 3 chambers, so it's not so easy to change tactics when a freeze team hits a boss floor.
After weeks of no replies, on September 6th I removed freeze.
On September 8th it was added back by troper Editpage, simply citing that "freeze is still used on non-boss floors."
What should I do here? Remove it again and tell them to take it up on the discussion page?
open On Past Removal of a FreudianExcuse example Videogame
A few months ago this example of Freudian Excuse was removed from Doom (2016): The Doom Slayer on the basis that the trope was allegedly "about childhood traumas."
- Freudian Excuse: The deaths of his wife, son, pet and brothers in arms is what fuels his rage and hatred towards demon kind and anyone stupid or power hungry enough to assist them.
I'm not 100% sure if the removal of this trope from the page was correct. If it was, then a large number of Freudian Excuse entries may need heavy alteration.
Edited by WiryAiluropodineresolved The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge Videogame
Under the The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge, there's this: Fanon: Many feel that the game makes far more sense if you assume it takes place in continuity with Kingdom Hearts rather than the actual movie. Why is that? Is it because the game is heavily combat-oriented? The game was promoted as a sequel to the movie.
openNew user here, just wanted to ask something. Videogame
So I was hoping to contribute to this site by making some additions to existing pages while also creating some new ones, but I haven't got the slightest idea on how to edit on here or create a new page etc. If anyone could please help me learn how to do so, that would be much appreciated.
openShovel Knight page split Videogame
Brought this up in the discussion page:
I'd like to suggest a page split across all Shovel Knight games (including those within Treasure Trove), like it was done with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure years ago. Each Treasure Trove entry as well as the recently released Dig and Pocket Dungeon are chock-full of tropes specific to them. I feel having the entire franchise contained within one page is limiting and makes it pretty hard for people to find tropes for specific entries, or want to edit them in at all.
I'm willing to help with moving tropes from one page to another as well.
openDanganronpa spoilers Videogame
As noted on the series's pages, the franchise's twist-heavy nature leads to almost any discussion becoming impossible without spoilers. Given that, the pages relating to the overall franchise should be completely devoid of spoiler tags (unless referring to spoilers for non-Danganronpa works), but pages for individual entries are where my question comes in: while spoilers for the specific entry shouldn't be under a spoiler tag, would any spoilers for other entries in the series have to be under a spoiler tag? My assumption is it would only apply to later entries in the series (e.g. referencing a spoiler for Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair on a page for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc) and not to prior entries (vice versa), but the usage of spoiler tags seems inconsistent here. I've been trying to hide unmarked spoilers for later entries when I see them, though I probably should have asked in here first if those qualify for a spoiler tag.
open Should Eastern and Western RPGs be sorted by aesthetics or by their country of origin? Videogame
I've seen a lot of RPGs being sorted as Eastern or Western according to their country of origin, but some games such as Undertale are sorted according to aesthetic. In that game's case, it's sometimes classified as an Eastern RPG despite being made by an American, like in the Eastern RPG index. What should be the standard here?
Edited by TroperNo9001openNeed an explanation for this. Videogame
I recently made an example in Mega Man that....aside from other things, was said to have grammar, Word Cruft, and indentation issues. Now, I concede that my edit had an entire sentence that was Word Cruft, accidentally using its' and it's interchangably, and I had issues with using commas instead of semicolons because I have no idea how to put those in sentences....but making a new sentence beginning with and that completely destroys the context of the sentence I was making not to mention making a single indentation when, given that I was adding an example from a different tropers game example, required a double indentation (seeing as my edit didn't include the game name since the example was on the same game another example mentioned, which, according to the indentation rules I was linked to, required a double asterisk indent). I want to know because I want to learn, I want to be able to understand how to add examples without making the more extreme grammar mistakes that constantly seem to crop up in my edits. I want to be able to create an example that doesn't have to have such a massive edit put onto it because I can't understand the simple grammar rules.
Edited by NKgameropenSome questions about adding stuffs Videogame
I want to make a new page about the Taiwanese video game franchise 大富翁/Rich Man (it's kinda like Monopoly but with spirits for buffs and debuffs, a lottery, stock markets and many memorable characters to choose from among other things...) There are some questions I want to ask:
1. If I want to pick images, is it OK to take a screenshot from gamplay footages (or some info from websites or the instruction book from the Steam Port)? I don't want to accidentally cause a copyright infringment...
2. Some of the stuffs are named differently across titles, and so far I can fully get some English translations of 4's mobile version and the spinoff "Richman Fight," but I heard that 10 (and the upcoming 11) has English subtitles and I'm not going to buy them any time soon, if that's the case, how can I decide what's the official spelling?
openFan Reactions are not memes? Videogame
To use an example from Elden Ring:
- Valstrax! Explanation Fans of Monster Hunter quickly noticed that Radahn's phase transition attack, where he crashes down from the sky like a meteor, is extremely similar to the monster Valstrax's notorious signature move and began making reactions to show their horror at the realization
.
I recall reading somewhere on this site (can't remember where) that "Fan reactions are not memes."
After all, just putting an image macro/quote out saying "Valstrax!" would just make people think of Monster Hunter, not Elden Ring. By contrast, something that said "I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella" would be instantly associated with Elden Ring by those familiar with it.
This is not the only example of these "fan reactions being used as memes" I've seen, and to me they seem a bit shoe-horny, trying to force a reference to a totally different work/franchise.
So two questions - Is there anywhere that actually states that fan reactions are not memes, and if so, should these be cleaned up when they are found?
Edited by DragonFaxresolved Genshin Character pages Videogame
So I noticed that the character pages for Genshin Impact have been cleaned up with certain pages having "the" removed from their names. However, I feel I should point out that the treasure hoarders page still exists even after its replacement page was made. I made edits to it without realizing it was replaced until now. The old Adventurers Guild and Abyss Order pages still exist as well along with the old knights of favonius, Liyue Qixing, and four winds pages.

Outside of Artistic License – Physics, do we have any trope(s) related to the use of unrealistic flight physics?
Ie, how flying mounts in Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft work more like helicopters than actual flight, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic or Fire Emblem's pegasi (and wyverns in the latter) hovering in place like hummingbirds, flying monsters in Monster Hunter being able to hover in place, etc? (I know this is more common in other media too)
Doesn't apply to supernatural flight, such as Superman being able to hover in place, Witches being able to hover on brooms, magical wings like in The Legend of Dragoon's Winglies or Colette in Tales of Symphonia.
