openQuestionable phrasing on Ranma fanfics and abortion: how to approach? Anime
So I was looking over the Ranma fanon page and found this entry in regards to the idea of Ranma getting pregnant in female form.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanon/RanmaOneHalf
...
An overlap of fanon and Creator Provincialism inevitably shows up with "Ranma gets pregnant" fics, due to the fact that most fanfic authors are westerners. It's always justified that Ranma chooses to undergo what is canonically one of his worst nightmares because Good Girls Avoid Abortion. This is because abortion is an extremely controversial and polarizing subject in the West, where it was historically seen as a savage act of barbarism, and even today is still most often seen a last-ditch Necessarily Evil at best. Japan, on the other hand, has historically seen abortion as far less controversial — it has been legal and culturally acceptable for centuries. In fact, it's actually the preferred way of handling family size control, as opposed to the far more legally and culturally restricted use of birth control. So, Ranma would not believe that Good Girls Avoid Abortion because that trope is not a part of Japanese culture.
...
Now I'm not quite sure about how Japan views abortion, but I feel this entry could be rephrased in regards to its discussion on abortion in the west. From what I know of Ranma fanfics this is a legit thing to raise, its not something I'd consider thrown out of nowhere, but there are some lines that feel like they could be edited for neutrality but as it is also a touchy subject I'm not sure about doing it on my own. Probably best to get a consensus on how best to adjust the phrasing.
Edited by KrspaceTresolved Permission to revert Speculative Troping? Anime
I added Adapted Out to Sayla Mass' entry in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX since she only appears in -Beginning-, the movie that was released prior to the show which is the first three episodes rearranged with extra footage. She's not in the episode of the series that adapts Char's segment.
DR34DN0UGHT changed it to Adaptational Early Appearance with this edit
. Ignoring how debatably this is it not an adaptational early appearance since the movie came out first (if anything, the show's appearance would be late), this entry is speculative. There's no indication that the show will use the footage it cut for its depiction of events (the movie was billed as having extra footage), and the use of "presumably" is the biggest indicator of this being Speculative Troping.
Can I get approval to revert this to avoid an edit war? If the show does reintegrate the footage, then it can be changed to something else.
Edited by FuzzyBarbarianresolved Precure season descriptions Anime
Pretty Cure has a folder "Series Descriptions", which lists the synopsis of each season. I feel it's unusual and redundant?
Edited by AmonimusresolvedAPP 13 year old MsFanservice? Anime
So I recently went through the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL character folders when I found the following under Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL Main Characters, Folder "Kotori Mizuki (Tori Meadows)":
- Ms. Fanservice: Despite being only 13-years-old, she gets a lot of Male Gaze shots of her incredibly short skirt, long and toned legs, and scenes showing off her swimwear during the pool or beach episodes are very common. Hell, in the original version, she even gets a Modesty Towel Wardrobe Malfunction in a flashback scene! Downplayed in the English Dub, where her skirt is made significantly longer and a lot of the Male Gaze shots are also edited out. The aforementioned Modesty Towel Wardrobe Malfunction scene is also removed. However, most of the swimwear scenes are still present.
Since I remembered hearing that characters below 16 can't be considered Ms. Fanservice, but couldn't find that being stated on the actual trope page, and since previous discussions on here surrounding similar characters were answered with this topic being a case-by-case, I thought I'd get some feedback on whether it can be removed or not.
resolved Is this actually a thing? Anime
Tropers/ removed various trope links from the character page for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You... because they were in spoiler text
?
openAn example or shoehorned? Anime
Several pages for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You reference a certain event as an example of Moving the Goalposts.
The event in question has a ramen shop owner come up with hard-to-eat "challenge dishes" and main characters completing them, repeating for several days with different kinds of difficulty (spicy, hot, steamy, etc.).
This looks like a non-example to me. As far as I understand the trope, it's about changing the rules and acting like the challenge wasn't actually beaten, while in this case the owner admits defeat and comes up with new challenges.
Edited by OneMoreopenTearJerker/MobileSuitGundam00 Anime
This page has had some abysmal grammar for some time now. Most of it was added by a single troper (Cinco_005), whom I’m assuming has English as a second language. I and another troper fixed most of it, but I’m exhausted, and a good portion of it still remains. I don’t think I have enough context on the show to do this on my own. The page also had spoiler tags, which is against wiki policy, and which I removed by hand.
Also, for some bizarre reason, the page image was completely deleted in one edit. I also added that back.
openAvoiding an edit war Anime
This entry used to be on YMMV.Sonic X:
- Idiot Plot: The Egg Moon story line only happens because Sonic is apparently the only person in the entire world who understands basic astronomy.
Nate River 18 removed it with the edit reason: "Idiot Plot is not YMMV".
Idiot Plot is YMMV, though, so permission to restore the entry?
openProtagonist usage Anime
Chaotic Novelist made a massive edit to Stardust Crusaders
citing that the word protagonist cannot be used in the plural, although I've seen it used as such. Is such a change necessary?
Also, while they correctly removed misuse of Ensemble Dark Horse from descriptions of Kakyoin and Avdol, they also modified an entry in such a way that it comes off as on-page complaining about said misuse.
openPossible Edit War on Yashahime page Anime
Okay, so there's some contention over this entry on the Yashahime main page.
- Series Continuity Error: In the original anime, the clamshell rouge Inuyasha's mother gave him as a keepsake was destroyed by Naraku after Inuyasha gifted it to Kikyo, but here it's in Moroha's possession and perfectly intact, with no explanation how.
- Possibly averted if you consider Yashahime to be a sequel to the manga, where the clamshell was never broken.
I've deleted the second point before because the claim that the clamshell wasn't broken in the manga is misleading at best. As far as I can find, it never existed in the manga at all - it was only shown in an anime-original story, as one of many filler episodes that never occurred in the manga. I've asked repeatedly for anyone to provide some evidence that it did exist and wasn't destroyed in the manga continuity in case I'm just misremembering, but no one has done so, and the second point keeps being re-added as is despite not addressing the problem.
I really don't know how to handle this, but I don't want to drag this out into an edit war. Does anyone have some advice for handling this?
openEdit Warring on YMMV/Overlord2012 Anime
Leonidaz made some edits to the Overlord (2012) page on roughly 1/12.
- Memetic Badass: Ainz Ooal Gown is regarded as one of the most overpowered, invincible and badass villains and protagonists in Isekai history. An unusual case in that Ainz is indeed invencible and in-universe everybody regards him as the ultimate superior being, but in reality Ainz is far from being the unbeatable badass everyone thinks he is, he is just lucky to always meet foes weaker or dumber than him.
- Rooting for the Empire: It's rather hard to root for Ainz and the rest of the gang when they act like your typical Fantasy JRPG villains. The fact that they easily steamroll through any obstacle or foe, all the while acting over the top arrogant and snide at the other races and people around them does not help matters. You WISH the antagonist of the arc would actually smack the smirks right off of their faces just for a change of pace (though a bunch of them, such as the Eight Fingers, are even worse than them). The Tomb of Nazarick's over the top entrance and sadistic subjugation of the Lizardfolk (a peaceful community they went to war with just as an "experiment") has been seen as rather infuriating for readers. Though, after they were conquered, Ainz then ordered Cocytus to rule over them with the carrot and not the stick, showing that he's not a total sadist. However, Ainz later unleashed five abominations on a huge, mostly conscript, army and showed nothing but glee towards breaking the record of how many monsters were summoned at once, not even feeling anything about all those who his summoned monstrosities slaughtered. And then there's everything about Demiurge's "livestock". Seriously, many fans of Overlord would want a crossover with other series just so Ainz could face a challenge and be defeated JUST ONCE.
- Spiritual Adaptation: If you unfocus your eyes, you can almost convince yourself you’re watching an anime adaptation of Den.
- That One Boss: For the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick this title can easily be assigned to Victim, Guardian of the 8th Level. The irony of it all is that Victim is only level 35 and the weakest Guardian. His power comes from being able to sacrifice himself, which causes an onslaught of crippling status debuffs and movement lockdown effects, allowing the rest of Nazarick's forces to kill the invaders at their leisure. To emphasise this point; no Raid Party in Yggdrasil had ever gotten past it.
I removed the areas marked in bold, Spiritual Adaptation, and That One Boss because of the nature of these edits.
- Memetic Badass not only had misspelling, but it also reads as a Justifying Edit and conflicts with the trope.
- Rooting for the Empire has an unnecessary point at the end and has no reason to be there.
- Spiritual Adaptation reads as a ZCE since it doesn't explain how it is one.
- That One Boss is being used for an In-Universe example, so it doesn't make sense to include it.
After removing them on 1/13, said troper returned and added them back in without a message. I sent them a message notifying them I would be making this.
Edited by keyblade333openJapanese Name or English Name Anime
I know this site runs on a "written with English readers in mind" policy, but I notice that a bunch of Works pages use an untranslated Japanese title, particularly in the light novel section.
Take for instance, Isekai Yakkyoku (Pharmacy in Another World).
If we come across these pages, should we turn it into a redirect with a properly translated name?
openSecond Opinion on a Trope Anime
Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL
Idiot Ball: Early on, Yuma and Astral acquire No. 11: Big Eye and No. 61: Volcasaurus, two very powerful Number monsters who could have won a lot of duels that called for their effects. Neither Yuma nor Astral ever think to summon these two monsters except for one other time each; in Volcasaurus' case, it's for naught because he summons it during the only duel where his opponent has a counter in place. The same can also be said for No. 6: Chronomaly Atlandis, a card acquired much later but had equally high utilities for, given its overpowered effects; instead... they settle for using Gauntlet Launcher...
This sounds more like a rant than anything. Should it be removed?
Edited by Jackpot21openFruits Basket Anime
Hello. There's something very strange going on with Devoted2Nintendo's edits to the character sheet for Fruits Basket. History link is here

Since they're a relatively new troper (their history is here

openHow Long a Title is Too Long? Anime
I was wondering about creating a page for a manga, but its title in both English and Japanese are so long I'm not sure we could do it. I recall there's a character limit to a title length somewhere in the sixties, but the English translated title is 70 while the Japanese title is 65 characters long.
At the same time, I tried just going to the page manually to see where/if it would cut off and it seemed fine, so is the limit no longer an issue?
The titles in question:

Edited by sgamer82openWoolseyism.YuGiOh Anime
Most if not all of the entries on Woolseyism.Yu Gi Oh are misused. Woolseyism is about how translators will change things in order to make sense in a new language. Most if not all entries on that page are "I like this change, even if it doesn't make sense". Should this page be cut?
open This Sonic Character Who Keeps Getting Popped Up Anime
I've seen a lot of these all over the place on the Internet talking about this character named Chris Thorndyke. https://www.thetoptens.com/worst-sonic-characters/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEopDzaZzrU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8sLrHzl2og
I'm somewhat of a Sonic fan, but I haven't really seen any of the cartoons because they haven't really caught my eye, and I already have tons of shows that I'm currently watching that I can't really check them out. According to TV Tropes, he's hated because he's a Creator's Pet, but all these websites state that he's a spoiled brat who obsesses over Sonic more than Amy, and he's a gay furry lover who has a crush on Sonic. Does that sound like an example of Ron the Death Eater?
openComplaining? Anime
Applenyan added the following entry in YMMV.Yu Gi Oh VRAINS:
- Arc Fatigue: The second season suffers badly from this. For one thing it's the longest season and arc in Yu-Gi-Oh! to date having a grand total of 56 episodes. Another thing is the pacing for the season was rather poor for most of it. The first half of the season took way too long to properly introduce the plot and while the second half improved pacing, it felt as some duels were way too long or not as long as they should. Also not helping matters is for the entire season using the same opening "Go Forward", but unlike previous series didn't even bother to update the visuals despite them being way outdated by halfway in the season.
Seems complainy based on how the example's written. Was thinking about taking it down, but wanted to get some input here first.
Edited by Tenma-YuukiopenjouXIII violating "most recent localized name" policy Anime
After their edit on the recently launched Muggle with a Degree in Magic, I checked jouXIII's edit history
and noticed they have been going around editing Anime.Pokemon examples on trope pages to put the Romanized Japanese names of characters in front of their localized names (ie. Satoshi/Ash, Nyaasu/Meowth), or outright replacing them altogether. I sent them a PM about how TV Tropes uses the most recent localized names, but in the meantime could I have some help with reverting their edits?
Edit: Spotted some VideoGame.Pokemon and Anime.Digimon examples too. They're not even consistent, for example on Our Wyverns Are Different they changed the names in one example but left the name in example above it. Edit: Oops that was added by someone else after their edit.
Edit: They hit Manga.Dragon Ball, Manga. One Piece, and Anime.Yu Gi Oh examples too. And so far every edit of theirs I've looked at is along the lines of removing official localizations and nothing else.
Edited by homogenized

On Characters.Delicious In Dungeon Monsters, troper Smeagol 17 changed
the image of the humanoid mermaid to one in the anime. The things is, the image was reverted per this IP thread
since the image they suggested had bare breasts (albeit somewhat hard to see). What worse is that they also remove the tag and in the edit reason, they only cited the aforementioned but no one gave their approval. The only one responding to it is me, and even then, I was simply telling them to make an IP thread if they wish to change the images (and yet long after the thread they still changed the images without making a thread).
Any thoughts on this?
