Ask the Tropers:
resolved Should this "Tainted By The Preview" example be removed? Videogame
On the YMMV page for Assassin's Creed: Shadows, one of the examples listed under Tainted by the Preview cites an incident where a licensed figurine was recalled from sale
by a third party manufacturer due to a culturally insensitive design that received backlash online. But after thinking about it for a couple of weeks, I started to question if this even qualifies as a proper example. Specifically because this particular controversy revolves around physical merchandise that's explicitly isn't bundled with any of the confirmed editions of the game.
To put things into perspective, Fallout 76 is another major video game release that had a slew of similar controversies surrounding botched physical merchandise, such as the infamous canvas bag downgrade
(which actually was tied to a collector's edition) and Nuka Dark Rum fiasco.
But the current Tainted by the Preview page for Fallout 76 is laser focused on the negative audience reaction to the game's actual trailers and gameplay previews, while the backlash surrounding the merch is instead briefly mentioned under Overshadowed by Controversy under its respective YMMV page.
I personally believe that the YMMV page for Shadows should follow the example set by Fallout 76. But since Shadows isn't out yet, any entries associated with Overshadowed by Controversy can't be added on the page until six months after the official release.
So with all of this in mind, here's my question to you all: Should this example be removed from the YMMV Page due to not really qualifying as preview content? Or is there something I'm missing here that means this does somehow qualify?
openIgnored notifiers Videogame
Yesterday, bf2234 added an empty folder to GameBreaker.Destiny 2, which I then removed. Normally, this would only prompt a notifier, but they have been reported in the past for repeatedly doing this while also edit warring and ignoring page comments in the process
. As they have received multiple notifiers and pings before, I feel an escalation to a tap on the shoulder is necessary.
resolved Changing the media that a page is. Videogame
Hello, TV Tropers. This is the first time I’ve ever asked something, so apologies if this first time isn’t a good first impression.
I’ve just created the page for the Roblox horror game, Color or Die, but I accidentally set the media type to “Video Games” instead of just “Video Game”. So, “Color Or Die” instead of “Color Or Die”. Is there any way I can fix this and change it to the correct version?
resolved Me when i lie on the internet. Bottom Text Videogame
Whenever a page image has the note about not removing it without first consulting Image Pickin, does it also apply to the caption underneath it?
There's one particular work page for an E Rated videogame that contains absolutely NO non-kid-friendly content, but the caption for it's image weirdly implies that the game has a First-Episode Twist that turns it disturbing/disgusting. I was going to remove it since it's so blatantly misleading, until I noticed the aforementioned note. Should something be done before i go ahead with it?
The page is Viva Piñata.
openWork page with the wrong title? Videogame
There is a work page for a series of games called Buzzy the Knowledge Bug by Humongous Entertainment. The thing is, as far as I can tell, the series has never officially been named after Buzzy. Most sources I've seen, including the official pages for the games on Steam, refer to the series as Junior Field Trips. Buzzy's name has only ever been included in the game titles as an aside following the "Let's Explore the (place)" title. Should anything be done about this?
openQuote edit war Videogame
There seems to be a bit of back-and-forth between Shinobi and other tropers regarding character quotes on Marvel Rivals pages.
openRenaming A Work Videogame
Juke's Towers of Hell is now known as "Eternal Towers of Hell". Could this work be renamed?
resolved Should it be there? Videogame
In the page for Goodbye Volcano High, there’s the following in the Hilarious in Hindsight section
One of Swamp Babies's songs is titled "Rabies Babies."
Now, while I’m as much a fan of the Smiling Critters as the next guy, should this REALLY be there?
resolved Minecraft Wiki link + potential edit war / single-issue wonk? Videogame
In January, ReCrafter4J edited a link
on the VideoGame.Minecraft page so that the link went to the Minecraft fan wiki hosted on Fandom instead of an independent wiki, with no edit reason.
Several days later, this edit was reverted
by AperturePublishing so that the link went to the independent wiki again.
Just earlier today, ReCrafterJ changed the link
to go to the Fandom-hosted wiki again, with no edit reason provided.
I DM'd
ReCrafter4J after their first edit, believing that they simply made the edit based on ignorance of the independent wiki, but they only recently messaged me back
, emphasizing that the Fandom-hosted wiki was "formerly official" (as they did in their first edit).
I'm not sure how to go about things from here — I feel that both wikis can be linked on the page as a compromise, and I told ReCrafter4J that much
in response. However, I just checked ReCrafter4J's edit history
and found that they have only ever made two edits on the site with this account, both only changing the independent wiki URL to the Fandom-hosted wiki URL, which is really rubbing me the wrong way and makes me feel there's a bigger issue here.
openDiscussion About a Work Videogame
Which is the best place to discuss about a particular piece of media and figuring out what to do with it (namely, seperating a sequel to its own dedicated page)?
For example, I'd like to make a seperate page for Sonic Rivals 2 for when it has enough tropes that warrant making one. We already did so with the Sonic Advance trilogy and the Sonic Rush duology, so I'm curious to know where it's best to discuss about it.
Edited by HarmonyBunny2000resolved Collapsable/Label Image Not Working Videogame
A collapsable image for Bron the Dinosaur in Characters.Poppy Playtime Toys won't format properly. The image won't collapse and it's way too big. I've checked the markdown and I can't see anything off the top of my head that would screw it up.
Edited by DancouMaryuuopenDo folder names need a space after the semicolon? Videogame
When we're making folder names, is there supposed to be a space between the colon and the name for the folder?
Asking because I've seen people write up said folders with and without the space, most recently on Prehistoric Kingdom, and it bugs me over which is correct.
resolved FFXIV Quotes Page Videogame
I really didn't want that page cut... Someone needs to step up and make lyrics allowable! What if those lyrics were really, REALLY hard to find, like from an obscure game or anime that had their lyrics never officially released?!
Edited by XenithXenakuopenAward Snub Validity Videogame
Back in November I added
an Award Snub entry for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, having noticed that a sizable portion of the fanbase was disappointed that it hadn't been nominated for certain categories at the 2024 Game Awards, with the entry specifically mentioning the game getting snubbed for Best RPG, Best Art Direction
, and Game of the Year, and Gareth David-Lloyd's performance
as Solas getting snubbed for Best Performance, as those were the categories that kept coming up when talking about where the game got snubbed.
However, almost a month later, the troper, Fishysaur, removed
Best Art Direction and Game of the Year from the entry, saying that there were people who didn't want the game to be nominated for those categories, as if that somehow invalidates their inclusion in the entry despite Award Snub being a YMMV trope, meaning not everyone has to agree with the entry for it to be valid. I would add those categories back, but as I'm the one who added the entry in the first place, that would be edit warring, so I was hoping that by bringing this here, I’d be able to get the go-ahead to add those categories back to the entry.
On a related note, a few days ago an Acclaimed Flop entry was added on the game's trivia page, I added
that the game has been reviewed generally positively by audiences, as the game has generally positive user review scores on Steam
, PSN
, and Xbox
, where you need to have played the game in order to review it...
Only for Fishysaur to remove
what I added and then claim
that audience reception is mixed, despite the fact that I had already explained to them when they PM'd me over my deletion of the game's Critical Dissonance entry that, outside of Metacritic where the user score got review-bombed to hell and back, the game has generally been reviewed positively by users.
What's strange about this is that after I explained this to Fishysaur back then, they actually ended up agreeing with me, so I'm not sure why they've gone back to claiming that the game's audience reception is mixed.
Edited by CorvusIXresolved Mass Plagiarism in Recap pages Videogame
On various pages for Recap.Trails Series, troper Thequietman has been mass plagiarizing from the Kiseki wiki
. For examples take the various recap pages for Recap. The Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel and compare them to the story page
of Cold Steel.
I already sent notifiers but given how extensive it is, we might need more intervention.
openHelp finding confirmation for a Trivia entry Videogame
An entry I made was recently deleted from Kingdom Come Deliverance's trivia page.
I first wrote it after reading that the co-director had partook in some trolling of the controversy surrounding the first games lack of inclusion to help promote the game, however I can no longer find the orignal sources since when you look it up now, you only get the current controversies surrounding the sequal.
Can anyone else help confirm this detail about the first game, or remember where it might have been stated?
Edited by Avenger09resolved Naming of Cookie Run Epic Cookies (Ovenbreak) characters page Videogame
Currently, the Cookie Run Epic Cookie character pages for the OvenBreak version are split into the following pages:
- Characters.Cookie Run Epic Cookies (for part one, which confusingly has a duplicate page)
- Characters.Cookie Run Epic Cookies Season Five Onward (for part two, of which Characters.Cookie Run Epic Cookies Part Two was deleted as a duplicate page)
- Characters.Cookie Run Epic Cookies Part Three (for part three??)
Would it be better to keep the naming convention by season number for OvenBreak or change it to a more general one like part 1/2/3 like with the CookieRun: Kingdom Epic Cookie character pages? I'm not sure if I should ask here or make a dedicated thread on the forums/discussion page.
EDIT: just realised there's a dedicated thread on the forums for character page cleanup. Will also ask there.
Edited by PeppermintSodaopenMario and Sonic Videogame
When I create separate pages for the Marioand Sonic games, the first two games don’t have the city it takes place or the year. To separate the former game from the series, should it say 2008 at the end or the number 1? Same thing for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games 2010.
openIs this not an example? (Dark Souls III) Videogame
I noticed an edit I made on the Wrong Context Magic has been deleted a few months ago, and I'm not totally sure its deletion was justified. This is the example in question:
- Dark Souls III has a downplayed example: While all games in the Dark Souls series feature the holy-themed Miracles, offensive spells were always variations of lightning, such as lightning spears and enchanting weapons with lightning. However, a select few Miracles associated with the Angelic religion of Lothric, such as Blessed Weapon, Divine Pillars of Light, and Prince Lothric's magic, are all much more akin to the standard Light 'em Up depiction of holy magic, and gameplay-wise actually deal physical damage instead of elemental damage.
- It is a very questionable example - even the first game had non-lightning Miracles, Emit Force and Wrath of the Gods, both dealing magical damage. Those spells became lightning-based in DSII and than physical in DSIII - without any relation to the Angelic religion. Not to mention that Blessed Weapon is NOT an Angelic spell but a completely normal, state church approved miracle used by the Lothric knights, while Angelic religion is officially a heresy.
I still think it applies as something that is out of place compared to the rest of the game's world, since Emit Force and Wrath of the Gods do not have the same Light 'em Up effect as Lothric's holy spells. Notably, there is a theory that said spells are a Production Foreshadowing of Elden Ring, which started development only a year later, which would feature Holy as a specific damage type alongside more typical Light 'em Up spells, including spells that were very directly inspired by the few light spells in Dark Souls III, such as the Way of White Corona miracle in DS 3 and the Light Discus incantation in Elden Ring.

Something I noticed on Video Games is that the entry for Fire Emblem: Three Houses seems to hype up its darkness a lot. In my view, it's no more or less crapsack than your more cynical FE installments or even medieval times, like Archanea, Tellius and Valencia. Yes, the Church of Seiros was oppressive as hell and there was a lot of suffering from various faction, but the world isn't fundamentally broken even in the mutably crapsack sense, and in all four endings all start veering towards an improvement/recovering once the war is over. So it doesn't seem like that much darker than Fire Emblem Fates, which didn't qualify, and seems to be confusing Grey-and-Gray Morality for Crapsack World.
