Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

No, that would be as bad as linking to a pirated movie torrent or a scanlation site.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Fan-translations are still infringing copyright by nature (translating a copyrighted text does not make the initial copyright magically not apply, and certainly doesn't count as fair use if it covers a whole game's script). Many rights-holders don't care enough for them to be taken down, but they're indeed illegal.
crazysamaritan is exaggerating a bit - there's a difference between linking to just the fan translation, linking to a prepatched copy of the game (or the translation that links to a pirated copy), or linking to a translation that links to where to legally buy the original game. The real issue is that - like any other link on the Internet - the fan translation can get taken down at any time for whatever reason (for example, because the site hosting it closes down). That's why I think we're better off not providing links - just mentioning the existance of a fan translation should be enough, people can search for it if they need it.
Yeah, I don't think that linking to a translation patch will get us in trouble for supporting piracy, and the website explicitly says that they will not provide a link to the ROM, patched or not. It's functionally identical to linking to a Game Mod.
Edited by SeracAh, it looks like I should clarify what I was saying a bit. The context was asking about a link to a fan-derivation in an example for an official work, and that's why I said it wouldn't be acceptable. It would be different if the translation had its own article, because that would be like posting a link to a fanfiction.
The question wasn't about a change in medium, but it did involve copyright violation, so I thought of other examples of copyright violations that we expressly don't allow. Posting the link to a fanmade copy of any type on the page of a work with an active copyright is simply not allowed, and that extends to examples that are crosswicked as well. To that point, linking to a popular Game Mod name would also be unacceptable for inclusion on the page of the game itself, even if all it did was change the displayed script. So consensus is that I should cut the mention alongside the complaining?

I decided to clean up a No Export for You entry for Valkyria Chronicles III for being complainy, but I'm not too sure about leaving links to fan translations. Don't we typically don't allow that?
