Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.

I don't feel like you made a mistake here. Like bwburke94 said, it's incidental to the example, but I'm also of the mindset that it counts as a Mythology Gag. Smash Bros. isn't the same game series as Final Fantasy or Street Fighter, so saying certain character moves aren't references to their home franchises seems odd to me.
Edited by RacattackForcealright, so how do i address this without making it look like i'm edit warring?
weaponizing Dungeon Fighter Online elitism since 2018I think that the person who removed it is confusing it with Shout-Out. Anyway, you just link to this thread when you re-add it.
As the one who removed it
, I concede to consensus, though I want to explain my reasoning at least.
I did check the definition to be sure before removal, and I interpreted the bit I removed as "move was first given a name in a spinoff game" which I believed to not be a reference to or gag about the Sephiroth's previous appearances or his game's development, just simply what the move is called (ever since it was given a name); which is why I likened it to calling Ken's throw move being named Hell Wheel a Mythology Gag.
Edited by homogenizedRight. If it were simply "this move has the same name as in DFF" it wouldn't be a Mythology Gag, but the gag is not solely about the move's existence.
I think the move being a reference to Aerith's death is a Mythology Gag, but being named Hell's Gate isn't. I believe that Rally is okay with not putting back the bolded part.

i thought it was considering Square Enix are apparently the type to re-localize move names
based on what people are familiar with in past games. again, i'm not against leaving it off if it isn't, but now it seems like we're not so sure.
Well, in that case there's issue of Hero's moves then, as Dragon Quest spells and abilities have had different localized names in the past. I wouldn't call Frizz a Mythology Gag to Dragon Quest VIII where that name for that spell line was first used.
Now, perhaps if they purposely used a past name over the current name, then it could be considered a Mythology Gag; for example, using Hero again, if they used the names Blaze/Blazemore/Blazemost then it might be a valid example.
Edited by homogenizedThis seems like it should be discussed in Trope Talk or the discussion page.

i don't mean to call anyone out, i'm just here to learn from my own mistakes.
this bit i added to Sephiroth's Mythology Gag entry in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 76 to 81 got removed (in bold):
with the following reason:
i'm just curious what my mistake was, since Mythology Gag doesn't seem like it's limited in scope to how mundane the reference is, just that the thing referenced isn't in the same canon/universe otherwise it'd be Continuity Nod. unless, of course, i missed something while skimming the article (that happens to me a lot, unfortunately).
