That doesn't seem quite it, because what I'm thinking of is that it happens to *everybody*. On the way out, the writers apparently decide they should expend every possible bit of romance by finally pairing off the couples we've been waiting for so long.

Near the end of a long-running series, all of the potential couples tend to get paired off, as the need to play with romantic tensions diminishes. I know Friends did this. Scrubs had a little bit too. Any others? Is this a trope?
