If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight.Depends on how it's played? If they really don't understand that there's a difference between, say, a part-time lifeguard at a small beach, a career professional in an area with some big waves or choppy surf, and a navy diver or something, then even if they do make allowances for civilians, I'd say I Thought Everyone Could Do That still applies. If they're doing it as kind of a competitive dig at the other lifeguards, though, then maybe something else. Competition Freak?
That's what I'm trying to find out: how I Thought Everyone Could Do That is being played with. It's not Competition Freak, the Training from Hell hero really doesn't understand that applying the performance standards of a navy diver to the poor part-time lifeguards at an indoor swimming pool is overkill.
If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight.Maybe slightly downplaying it by giving civilians some slack? But if they really think any civilian could do just as much as they can with a little training, then I think they're oblivious enough that the trope is being played pretty straight. Or maybe even exaggerated slightly in the other direction.
I don't think it's a separate trope, at any rate, is my two cents.
Maybe, but that's not what's going on here. This is having overblown expectations of someone else's skills/traits because you DO have those skills/traits.

Is there a variant of "I Thought Everyone Could Do That" for when somebody knows average citizens can't do X but overestimates how well someone was trained to do X? E.g. expecting every pilot to be an Ace Pilot or expecting every lifeguard to have enough stamina to do a gazillion chest compressions (instead of just a few more than normal) on a drowned person.
Original description: The average most-likely-out-of-shape civilian trying to do CPR can only do so many chest compressions before they get tired. Lifeguards, probably in somewhat decent shape, can do some more chest compressions than the average civilian. A Jumped at the Call hero with self-inflicted Training from Hell outperforms both the civilians and the lifeguards at chest compressions, doesn't expect the civilians to be able to do as many chest compressions, but berates the lifeguards with "What do you mean, you can't keep up with me? You call yourselves lifeguards? Disgraceful!"
How does this scenario relate to "I Thought Everyone Could Do That"? Is it some manner of playing with that trope? If so, how is it played with? If not, could it be its own trope?
