Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
All of these actions, as well as various mod actions like this very Wishlist, have major backlogs. The ones about the forums would be best complemented by an option to holler to engineers.

Mod tools
- Custom title tool
- Page mover tool
- Banner tool (can make Trivia, Audience, Just For Fun, etc banners appear on pages.
- Lock page function
- Google ads switch (turn google ads on page on/off)
- Account Approval Queue (where new accounts get approved/denied)
- Bulletin tool (tied together with the Trope of the Day queue)
- Page restore tool
Wiki/Overall site abilities
- Suspend users
- Read user P Ms
- Lock/delete/ edit queries and replies (Ask The Tropers, Trope Finder, You Know That Show, Query Bugs, and Query Wishlist)
- Create pages in the Main/ namespace.
- Delete, edit and move reviews.
- Delete, edit, and move discussion posts
- Cut, decline and challenge Cut List items
- Deny, Approve, and edit video descriptions, titles and sources
- Edit locked pages
- Revert edits
- Delete edit reasons
- Delete images stored in the database.
- Unlaunch, discard and lock drafts.
Forum abilities
- Edit posts.
- Make posts in mod mode.
- Thump posts
- Access to private mod forum which has a separate thread for page reports/review reports/discussion reports/ and forum hollers.
- Move/Nuke(delete)/Lock threads
- Create, hook and lock crowners
- Clock threads (sets a deadline for inactive workshop thread)
- Post on the Edit banned thread (where banned users go to appeal their bans).
- Delete Avatars and forum signatures.
Engineer Powers
We want this to all be in one "engineer" role like how all of the mod tools and abilities are in one mod role. I think it's better to cover multiple bases than rely on certain people to do specific things (also that lessens stress on a specific person).- Approve/Deny/Delete/Edit Videos
- Clock/Unclock threads
- Edit locked pages (but not lock/unlock pages)
- Move threads
- Lock/unlock threads.
- Hook crowners
- Create pages in the Main/ namespace

More details
- We only need engineers to lock/unlock, move threads, and edit thread titles for wiki sub forums like Trope Repair Shop, Image Pickin', and the projects forums. Everything else on the forums will be handled by moderation. Also, mods will handle crowners on Wiki Talk. This is just a clarification, not a tech related request.
- Also, engineers won't have access to the Mod Jabberings forum (private mod forum). Instead, we want to make a separate thread for engineers and mods to communicate on the FAQ subforum. Nothing engineers do needs to be on a private forum so the thread will be public.
- Is it possible to code the thread so that only mods/engineers can post on it? If not, it was originally suggested to just make a warning on the thread's title so I guess we can do that instead.

Edit Banned has some measure that only lets suspended users and mods post, the Engineers chat could borrow it if possible.
We may also need a logging system of who did what action, to see if people are doing tasks correctly.

What will determine who's eligible to become an Engineer? Will there be an application process? Will the mods handpick them? Some other method?

We handpick and send PM invitations to potential mod candidates so I assume we will do the same for potential engineers. Some type of announcement about us scouting for engineers might get posted on the moderation form once invitations get sent out.

threads in the forums, it would be a great relief to our hard-working moderators if certain users were entrusted with limited versions of the mod team's tools.
This would spread out the grunt work among a larger portion of the site's users, lightening the mods' hefty workload.
The following powers come to mind when it comes to things engineers could do:
Not every engineer would necessarily have all of these powers. And of course, such powers would only be granted to active, trustworthy, long-time users who have proven themselves to hold the wiki's best interests at heart. Abusing these privileges would lead to them being immediately revoked.
