Ask The Tropers

* The advertising campaign for Birds of Prey could very easily be a byword for not only how NOT to drum up hype for a major tentpole picture, but also how to set a movie up for failure, as its promo campaign is often seen as one of the reasons for the film's box office failure, among other things... and that's when this film was not being given the Invisible Advertising trearment. For a start, not a single teaser had arrived until September 2019... which might not have been such a bad thing had this not been literally give months before the release date. Said teaser debuted in front of It Chapter 2, and starts out as a cringe-worthy parody before Harley Quinn pops one of Pennywise's red baloons, walks up to the camera and declares, "I'm so fucking over clowns!", before a confusing and poorly edited montage of out-of-context action sequences fly in front of the screen. This understandably left a bad taste in plenty of moviegoers' mouths, and the actual full trailer that debuted two months later was hardly any better, giving only vague details of the plot, and being a sequences of our of context clips that don't give any idea of what the film's supposed to be like at all, thus leaving several scratching their heads in sheer confusion. And apart from that, a number of equally confusing TV spots, incredibly bipolar print ads that looked like unicorn vomit, and some modernist comments from director Cathy Yan that really did not help this bizarre mess of an advertising campaign. While the film was well received by critics and audiences in the end, the film suffered at the box office, with many holding the advertising (or lack thereof) up with facets such as the R Rating and COVID-19 outbreak as possible explanations.
