That sounds like misuse to me.

Quoting Killer App's description: "A killer app is a game - or something not a game that's a category killer - so good that it's considered a must-own if you have the system it's released for, and is in fact a reason in and of itself to buy said system."

It's specifically a positive thing. WW2 is the furthest thing from positive. Calling WW2 "so good that it's the reason to own a gun" strikes me as extremely tasteless.

And the Covid-19 "example" makes even less sense. Sure, it is probably causing more people to use videoconferencing. But Covid-19 is not a thing you use in videoconferencing. It is not the "app" that is making videoconferencing good.

Yoof, I'd say cut both with prejudice.

Yeah, both of those are clear shoehorning, and Skype was already pretty popular.

A killer app has to be an app. Zap 'em.

Since no one else did it, I cut them. Gotta be bold and proactive sometimes, in the face of extremely blatant shoehorning.

I was looking through the rest of the "Other" folder and there's some...questionable stuff in there. The Gulf War? Mc Carthy hearings? Bittorrent? There might be some more shoehorning in there.

I hate to give the tropers this one but I think The Mc Carthy Hearings and the Gulf War DO count because its THE BROADCAST and not the evenT itself. These were WRONG because they exposit themselves AS The Killer App.

I know this because I was just as outraged as you are and had to build my argument so that it was sound and not simple outrage.

People are continuing to add Covid-19 examples to Killer App.

The last troper to do this was Storygirl000: [1]

Storygirl added that Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a Killer App due to Covid-19.

Should Killer App be run through the Real Life cleanup thread to perhaps make it no real life examples (since to have a Killer App, the app has to sell on its own merits and boost the platform the app is on at the same time)?

NRLEP is not the correct approach for this problem. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn't a Real Life example, it being caused by real life does not make it RL. This needs a commented out note not to add coronavirus-related examples without discussion.

^ Ok. Would something like this work for the notice?

Please do not add examples relating to Coronavirus/Covid-19 without a discussion first.

In the meanwhile, I'll remove the entry citing this ATT thread and message Storygirl about the removal.

EDIT - Found a Covid-19 entry for Ring Fit Adventure. Troper that added it was Time Lord Victorious. Should I remove that too and message that troper?

For what it's worth, multiple COVID-related pages were cut recently due to ROCEJ issues. Link to relevant Wiki Talk thread.

Ok update on some matters: My revert of Storygirl was undone by Racattack Force. I need permission to revert this because I would start an edit war if I edit that entry anymore.

I haven't undid the other entry about Ring Fit Adventure yet or added a commented out notice because I need the first matter solved first and need consensus on the notice suggestion I made earlier in this ATT.

Does anyone know whatelse can be done here while waiting?

Do we even have anything for events that spark high demand for a specific product unrelated to the product itself? The closest I could think of is Demand Overload.

~Ngamer01: Go ahead and revert that change on Killer App; make sure you cite this ATT in the edit reason.

The edit reversion has been done and Time Lord Victorious along with Racattack Force have been messaged with a link to this Ask the Tropers thread as well. I also added a commented out notice on the Killer App page to note additions involving Coronavirus/Covid-19 need to be discussed first. I hope this is satisfactory.

Regarding the Animal Crossing: New Horizons example, I only viewed COVID-19 as an additional reason to its success; the history of the series as a killer app, with previous installments serving that role for past consoles, meant that it was more likely than not going to be a killer app for the Switch console regardless. Video games in general have seen sales boosts because of social distancing and isolation, after all. That is to say, New Horizons would have been successful anyway, but COVID-19 is probably part of the reason why it was "sold more than the previous entry ever did" successful.
